Bought a brand new carb for my weed eater (Craftsman) and it wouldn't start. I come to TH-cam and put in Craftsman weed eater wont stay running and voila! FIrst link was yours! I had the adjustment tool in my tuneup/carb kit and didn't even know it! Made adjustment to the low end first and it started right up! After running a minute made adjustment to high end and it runs like it should! Thanks man...I appreciate it!

I bought a set of adjustment screw drivers off Amazon and this was the "double D" as it has 2 flats and 2 rounds on the sides. Mine was 2 full turns out and it was perfect!! On this craftsman, the inner one is the high, and the outer is low, contrary to what another poster said. Thank you again!! Mine runs great now!

I've tried changing the gas with "brand new" fresh gas, adjusting the idle, cleaning the air filter, changing the spark plug and anything else I could find that might "fix" the problem of it bogging down and dying on me. I was really starting to think it hated me!! I tried your trick with the pen...tried a hack saw to cut the pen and it did not work, it cut it but changed the size of the hole. Then used a box cutter and HOLY CRAP... It cut it the perfect size and worked like magic. I was able to fit it and turn it and now my 'Craftsman Weedwhacker gas trimmer' works like a dream. I never would've thought to use a pen...lol Funny how they don't want the consumer who bought their product to be able to make minor repairs to it, and if we mark up the products trying to do it ourselves our warranty gets voided. Your way made it so I didn't have to spend money I didn't have, but still fixed it and it does not affect my warranty status. Thank you so much for this video. :)
Chris,You are a pragmatic genius!!! Watched several videos and after wtaching yours I was able to fix my weedeater under 2 minutes before going out and thinking of repairing or buying another. The mark on the screw paid off and making your own adjustment tool with a plactic pen (used a Bic pen and forced it a bit) was pragmatism at it best. BTW Harbor Freight sells a kit with 4 different tips, 4 different screwdriver handles. each one has a different configuration to fit the various fuel adjustment screws. So far i haven't run into an adjustment screw that one of the 4 didn't fit. . I did have to modify one of screwdrivers a little, but they work. its worth a try. I think I paid 5 or 6 bucks for the set of 4. i work on these small motors all the time and I learn new tricks from you guys out their in TH-cam land! Thanks for sharing your knowledge!

You can buy the tool off Ebay for not too much. Many problems are the result of old lines and primer bulb. They get micro cracks in them and leak air which will cause stalling. Replace those at least every other year.

Carburetor adjustment tools of the various types sold on Amazon in a kit for about 20 bucks. Mine came with cleaning kit for carburetors, as line, and a gas line filter. All in a nice pouch. Somebody may have already informed you about it already. I know nothing about why the mechanic would say they were illegal for him to sell one to you. Strange!
i agree with several people on here. I was also told it was illegal to have the tools for adjusting the carbs. i have the tools to adjust them with. Shocked me when I found them. I agree that Small Engine repairmen will tell you they're illegal cause they're losing your business.

The new Craftsman trimmers seem to suck. I bought a 4 cycle Craftsman about 10 years ago. It was the attachment type model. It stopped gabbing the attachments that were attached to it and a replacement shaft cost as much as a new trimmer. The new trimmer is about a year old and already has problems restarting after warming up, bogging down when giving it full throttle, and I think they gave me about an inch of trimmer line in the trimmer part.
I bought the *Single D tool* online that fits those consumer trimmers and was able to tune my trimmer so it works better. I also discovered that adding Marvels Mystery Oil to the gas cleans out the varnish that restricts the fuel and I had to lean out the fuel after two tanks (a quart of gas). Now I use the walmart Super Tech oil with Marvels in the gas and the trimmer runs strong and as hard as I can push it. The trimmer is four years old and I run a brush cutter blade on it.
These new engines are crazy. I had to run my trimmer with the choke on constantly to make it run. Same for a small tiller I have. I bet it to comply with emissions testing or something.

All you have to do is open the low jet about 1/4 turn, maybe more or maybe less. After doing this you might have to adjust the idle screw. I've adjusted two cycle carbs for 60 yrs.
There are two screws yet nobody ever says which one they turned or that they never touched the "other" screw. They just guessed and got it right. They just say "then I turned it".
My man you can do that with a Dremel just cut straight across both of those screws and that makes a flat head screw on both of them makes it a lot easier

Go on Amazon and order the carburetor adjusting tool kit it comes with all the screwdrivers you need like a 12-piece kit some of made me mad the brushes and a jet cleaners

You can also take the carburetor off and cut grooves with a hack saw.

That's Craftsman for you,all of the trimmers i owned could be adjusted with a regular flat tip or phillips.

They are actually fuel mixture adjustments. Turn clockwise to lean mixture and counter clockwise to richen the mixture.

Very good advice. But it should not have shut off when you let go off the throttle. It should have went into low idle with the cord head running slow.

These machines come with bad carb adjustments right out of factory. They are set to some default that doesn't work for most people.
Clean the fuel filter in the tank. Bam new machine. You are welcome.

I used a dremel with a cutoff tool and cut right across the the pair of screws and the housing making a slot in both screws.
What if jet adjustment does not solve the problem?

Gaskets good
Fuel filter good
Use a Dremel and cut the sides around the screws down.
