CHICKANIC: The fuel tank valve is a one way filtered air check valve that allows air into the fuel tank... and does NOT allow vapors or fuel to exit. The valve allows "make-up" air to enter the fuel tank to avoid a vacuum / fuel starvation from the displaced fuel that is burned. It would appear that in fact your fuel tank valve was properly working and more than likely the fuel ultimately moistened the diaphragm assembly, making it flexible, which stopped the stiff pressure that was applied to the metering lever... which stopped the leak and resulted in the unit no longer flooding. As always, thanks for the excellent video!
Good video! Showed me my problem of fuel leaking out of the carburetor may be either a stiff diaphragm or a stuck tank vent. That makes sense! Thank you for explaining the specifics of the engine so much better than anyone else. You are great!!
Thank you for doing these videos! Just help me diagnose my backpack blower that was doing the same thing basically. Ended up being the needle and seat a little bit clogged and the screen being a little dirty but you cover that in some of your other videos. Not only did you save me money but my local shop is two weeks out and I can’t wait that long for my equipment to be fixed. Really appreciate what you do thank you.

Nice to see this ended up a simple fix. Petrol in Oztralia (your Gas) doesn't seem to last long these days either. I keep away from Ethanol blends. Love your work ! 🙂🚜🐻 Bear Queensland Oztralia
I had a piece of equipment leak fuel all the time, came from the dealer like that... Thought it might be a faulty tank vent, changed that out. Still leaked fuel. Turns out it was the needle lever was up too high, so the needle was always open. What gave that away was there was zero change in RPM in the H screw. So after getting into the carb, found that out and was easy to fix back to proper ZAMA height.
Thank your brother for his service and turn the thermostat up outside there in Arkansas. I'm coming down next week on a fishin trip and would prefer not to freeze to death. Keep the great vids coming.
Thank your brother for his service, glad he is ok. cool video was having same issue on a echo weed eater poured fuel in tank and fuel came out of intake gasket , so vent, or diaphram, lines are new
Great videos! I have seen them all. I have been a small engine technician for 45 years and love a challenge, and see you do to. Awesome job you do, wish I could get my wife to help some times. I love Echo produced I have a CS-440 I bought in 2005 and saw about 15 cord of wood each year, regular maintenance goes a long way and proper oils to. Great job! looking forward for more videos.
I recently had a Poulan that I hadn't used in a couple years, yes I drained the fuel. But it needed new fuel lines to get running as they were split and leaking gas. Ran good for a few hours while I cut up a tree then sat again for 6 months, yes I ran out the fuel before that 6 months. Got it started but it ran pretty crappy. Fiddled with the carb screws and got it running really well(maybe too well), but chain needed sharpening so stopped to do that. After that I could never get it to even blub blub a few times even using starting fluid. I'm guessing the ignition module died, but since it is probably 20 years old and I don't use a chain saw much more that every year to 6 months, decided to switch to electric. Got an Ego 18" and it starts every time even after sitting for months! Woo Hoo!
Wow, Fantastic video. I've been struggling with the same issue on my Shindaiwa t242 and have done everything I can think of. Thought I was going to have to replace the carb. but your trouble shooting was inspired so I'm going to give it another try. Keep up the great work.

Thanks very much for the information in this video, Bre. Big thumbs up for this one! I've been studying small engine work fulltime at TH-cam University since July 2021, watching literally thousands of videos (for several hours every day). My primary goal is acquiring equipment free or cheap and flipping, although I've started to do repairs for friends and family in a very small way. Although I'm subbed to your channel I don't have the notifications turned on. I watched plenty of your content early on until I started sorting through various channels to only get notifications from the ones I wanted to watch every day. I do see yours in my feed and click on those that seem interesting or informative to me at that moment (like this one!). Some of what you covered in this video is content I had not come across yet (and I'm subbed to many channels, including 5 you have listed). I understand how a carb works but it hadn't really occurred to me yet about exactly how the metering diaphragm could potentially flood or starve an engine of fuel and relating that to symptoms. I was already aware of adjusting the inlet needle lever or replacing a needle or seat but I hadn't ever heard that a diaphragm which was working during the previous season could possibly be revived by "exercising" it with fresh fuel, but I guess that makes perfect sense (at least sometimes). Certainly worth a try rather than having to take the time to research, order and install a rebuild kit! I was also aware of how check valves work in these engines but have yet to work on one with a separate hose running to an external check valve. Learning how that turned out to be the primary issue with this engine and how clear hose makes more sense in this particular installation helps a lot. Now I have more diagnostic and repair tools to add to my toolbelt! :) (...and source high quality clear hose equal to Tygon!) If I may, I'd like to offer a bit of constructive criticism about your audio quality. This is something of which you're probably already aware, but I notice it in so many creators' content I keep bringing it up to hopefully improve overall content throughout TH-cam. If you go back over this video and note when the audio volume is low and when it's high and then correlate that to where and how you had your equipment set up maybe you can see what needs to happen (with your existing equipment). The final outdoor segment has much better volume and is easier to hear compared to the indoor segments, especially the first indoor segment which is very difficult to hear. I'm guessing you're using a single camera with included microphone for all your work. The creators who have switched to lapel (lavaliere) mics do have much better sound quality because nothing drops out and almost always the volume is high enough for us to hear everything said. (Of course it's important for those mics to have a foam cover to avoid wind noise and sibilances (vocal "s" sounds). Please bear in mind we can always turn the sound down on our end but with a lot of equipment we have only a limited ability for volume increase. I'd much rather have to turn it down than have to put on headphones or earbuds to get enough volume. Thanks for reading and keep up the good work!

Hello, I know that you have done several of these videos about units bogging down, and I think that I have seen them all. But, and there is always a but, right? Anyway, I have an Echo PB-2520 and it is bogging down bad. At first, I tried using the choke to try and get some flexibility back in the diaphragm. That didn't work. Of course, I put fresh fuel in it, that didn't work. Changed out the Spark plug, replaced the air filter, replaced the gas tank vent filter, tried to adjust my carburetor, replaced the carburetor, that didn't work. Replaced the coil, Nada, and also tried adjusting the new carburetor, still nothing. While trying to adjust the high speed screw, I noticed that it ran better when I turned the high speed adjustment almost all the way to the left. I also removed the new air filter and moved the choke back and fourth. At full choke it got worse, by the way if appears to me it's not getting enough air. By the way the carburetor is not leaking fuel. So, I am at a complete at to what to do next. The only thing I may have done is I used a flat head screw driver to help me insert the new fuel line holder into the top of the fuel tank. Of course I found out that I should not have done this. So, I may have put a cut into the rubber plug. If you can think anything else I need to do, I'm all ears! I sure would appreciate any help you can give me, I'm sure I goofed something up somewhere. Thank you for your time and I really appreciate all of you videos, you do a great job too. I've had this blower for a couple of years and I really like it, so I hope I don't have to go buy another one. Oh, by the way, I also checked the exhaust and everything was clean as a pen. I don't know anything else to do. Thank you a head of time for all your help!
Refreshing myself on this video because my Husqvarna 323L trimmer is leaking. I've just worked it real hard to loosen up the diaphragm, but I'm not aware of a tank vent on this. Does it have some other kind of vent?
Thanks for the video. What kind of gas do u use? U say, " My gas". What gas is that? I know ita not the can from the big box store. Is it non-ethenol gas with 2 cycle oil mix? Thank u.
At about the 8 minute mark when you released the gas cap, should you not have restarted it and let it run a little bit with the cap retightened before shutting it off and letting it sit to check for more gas overflowing from the carb? Interesting videos btw.
I have a feeling you will get this one back. A tank vent is not an air outlet. it is a air inlet so the tank can not form a suction in the tank and prevent fuel from getting to the carb. But never does a tank went allow air to escape. You will get this one back. Hope I am not making anyone mad but that vent is to let the tank breath in as it burns up the fuel. Not to release pressure. Built up pressure will never go through the needle if the carb is right. That carb has a reason the needle is not sitting right or diaphragm issues. But not a vent valve.

At about the 8 minute mark when you released the gas cap, should you not have restarted it and let it run a little bit with the cap retightened before shutting it off and letting it sit to check for more gas overflowing from the carb?
Interesting videos btw.
like it very informative. thanks!!!
Hello, since I watched your videos, I don't spend a week without watching 2 to 3 videos! I have a problem with a small spring that must be installed at the 6-speed transmission on a mower that is pushed CUB CADET Model 12QD29Q596. Where do I have to install it? Thank you very much? Jacques from the province of Quebec, CANADA.
One more chainsaw video...PLEASE - Homelite 330 oiler quit.....
I have a Homelite 330 (UT10604A) 20 inch bar that has served me well for 20+ years. Still starts, runs and cuts GREAT. I just noticed automatic oiler not working. Took apart cleaned out everything (in carb chamber) and tried to get new parts BUT NO LONGER AVAILABLE, Pooh! Any ideas?? Conversion to manual oiler (somehow??). Hate to give up on otherwise great saw. Ideas on suitable replacement if I must...??? Thanks, and GREAT channel!!
