I’m beginning to think there are ZERO deer in this public I’m hunting. I’m doing everything right. I spend more time scouting that I do hunting. Maybe they will show up during rut. Love your videos! Keep ‘em coming!!
I learned more about tracking deer in this small segment than I have in any video I’ve ever watched. I have learned so much just from the way you describe things which some people are more than horrible at LOL keep them coming
As a mechanic I use the same sort of thing when someone brings me a car in peices...everything tells a story! And Dan's explanation of this is spot on! Never thought of it when it comes to deer so thanks again Dan! Just another tool from the LEGEND!
Been hunting for fifty years, my dad and grandpas worked the guide-camps around Jackson Whole,WY. I've picked up a lot of common knowledge that I have taken for granted, you add a lot of missing pieces to the big puzzle. We're never to old to learn. Thanks

Im a young 21 year old hunter I scouted some great buck bedding and found a very nice shed this spring thanks to many tactics I’ve learned from this channel and your DVD’s ! The best buck bedding i scouted is along a small marshy opening along a creek through surrounded by hardwoods a “thermal hub” and by no means do I feel like I got it figured it out but I think I got a pretty good idea. There is almost no sight advantage to the bed because it’s so thick but due to the high pressure I understand why the bucks are in this type of spot. I had the “awe” effect. I believe to get a crack at the buck I’m going to have to stay back from the transition so evening thermals don’t pull my scent into the toilet bowl effect of the opening. I’ll have to back off and hunt em off of exit trails I know are his because of the tracks and rubs I seen from spring scouting. We’ll see if I can figure this coming fall! Good luck to everybody this coming deer season.
One thing my gramp taught me was when you come across a track kick next to it in downward angle and compare the dirt color to the track that also tells you how fresh it is. He also would grab deer shit and feel if it's warm which I do both of these lol
The tip about taking pictures of your own prints is a pretty clever idea and something I never would have thought of but I can imagine its a big help in identifying aged tracks much quicker. Great video
For future shows I like watching your process of scouting new areas. Starting with google maps and explaining why your targeting these areas. Then go along with you scouting and watch your process. 👍🏻👍🏻🇺🇸
Great stuff Dan. Thanks for the tips on telling the difference between nice buck tracks and a big ole swamp doe. Happy Father's Day! I enjoy videos on spring scouting and reading sign as you're walking in on a hunt for future segments. Thanks!
Dan, I never knew about you or your channel until the first public land challenge on The Hunting Public a few years back. So happy I learned about The Hunting Beast. Since then you've been my go-to for hunting education and my favorite hunting channel. Thank you for all you do to help fellow public land hunters. And, I saw the picture of your monster buck you just shot the other day in Wisconsin. CONGRATULATIONS. That slob is a beast and I can't wait to see the video just like everyone else. - Brent from Central Iowa
One of the best channels out there. Always great info and illustrations. Even though I hunt a small private parcel, I'm able to translate much of what is said into helping me understand what our local herd is doing. Keep 'em coming Dan.
This is the most informative, clear cut and thorough channel on whitetail hunting I've seen yet. I watch every video you release and it had helped me a become a better hunter. I'm going to try saddle hunting this year and beast sticks will be my choice for climbing. Thank you for everything you do
Dan have you hunted any areas with heavy laurel ridge tops if so could you do a video on that Thankyou and as always the content you put out for us hunters is always a learning experience
Good stuff Dan! How about a full breakdown of how you came to harvest your most challenging bucks? I’m sure there were tough decisions and lessons learned along the way. Be neat to hear your thought process.
Super valuable information. Love the channel because you always learn something and are entertained at the same time. Also love the t-shirts. Keep the quality videos coming!!!
Great video. Dan is getting more and more confident - not in hunting because he is already a/The Beast - but it conveying his thoughts on camera. good luck this fall
That was flipping great I've learned from some trackers up in the Adirondacks in New York state but you have details in that brief seminar that are incredible thank you so much I'm going to go out in the woods right now and test this stuff out wish me luck Dan
Flash flooding today in S Louisiana. Big mud slop. (When life gives you apples, you make apple juice.) Now I’m Going make me a few boot tracks now and photograph em. Lol
Another great video Dan 👏 I wouldn't mind a video on shot placements, the broad heads you're going to be using, or for that matter any new gear you plan on using for the up and coming season. Also really enjoy watching your older videos. I would like to know more on how you started hunting like a beast. And when you slow down on summer scouting.?
Tracks will always be bigger and show the claws in mud or snow, especially old track in snow where the edges have melted a bit. But ya the 4 finger rule is what i use, especially on dry dirt, and if you get the claws on dry dirt it’s definitely a beast no doubt about it
Great video brotha. It's the little things this video is full of that I love and teaches me so much. Especially this one cuz I've been doing a lot of looking and reading up about tracks lately
Good video. An idea for a future talk is about whether deer, especially mature deer, recognize faces. Dogs recognize us. They will run up to their owner in a crowd. So it makes you think that mature deer can recognize our face from previous hunts. if so, how can their recognition impact our hunt?
Even my cat hates Biden 🤣love it! Good stuff Dan. A lot of times I do just look at tracks and say oh that’s a good one and leave it at that, instead of trying to figure all those details out.
I have been able to locate a lot of bedding the past couple months by watching your video. Thanks for passing on your knowledge. When I find the beds, I look for hair and confirm they are beds. I have found some down to the dirt and others with small vegetation in them. So I assume when they are down to the dirt they are active beds and the others with vegetation are not being used or not being used a frequently. I would like to see a video on how you know what time of year a buck is bedding in a particular bed and why? I’m assuming they change beds during the year based on food source, the rut and pressure so if I’m summer scouting and find a bed I think is being used will that help me come fall? How do I find fall beds in summer? Thanks again
I truly enjoyed these videos, I’d like to see more of reading tracks and overlooked browse species. More the merrier so few videos on true outdoorsman skill sets. The hunting beast TH-cam series and DVD’s will be looked back on as the gold standard for the pursuit of whitetail. Can’t convince me otherwise.
So interesting! I've always used my method. Pointy toes. It's a buck. Rounded toes, it's a doe. Have had plenty of arguments with people over years over that. But I believe what I believe, because I've proven to myself over the years it's true. But the inside outside technique. It really never dawned on me. Damn. How could I not see that?!! I'm sure you've gone over little details like this, through a boatload of videos you've done. But for whatever reason, and there could be many, people didn't pick up on it. That's what I was saying, trying to relate to you, regarding buck bedding and doe bedding thing. You got a boatload of freaking knowledge there. I think you just need to, rehash your experiences. Break down these tidbits of information, that are not tidbits, because they offer so much knowledge, but have been kind of glassed over in the past because, people want to get to the kill shot or whatever. Hope you understand what I'm trying to say. For me personally, I played the inside outside, three times. Then wrote it down. Just saying. That's the type of s*** I'm talking about when I reach out to U. You know your stuff's totally addicting, right? Sometimes I got to stop watching, because all I want to do is, sleep, dream, s***, scout, prep and hunt. It consumes me. Lolol. It's easier to blame you than myself. Lol😮
You said they look always smaller on the video Holly shit them track's are huge i was thinking the opposite my God i never seen a set of track's that big before in my life they look like cattle track's but I know there not . Some big heavy mature bucks there .
Hey Dan! Thanks for all you do, I’ve got a question about doe behavior right now, I’m in Vermont on 50 acres, my house looks over about 20 acre field so I watch the deer feed and whatnot everyday, dense woods surrounding the field, there’s plenty of feed but right now I have one doe, prolly last years, chasing off every single deer that steps out, for last few days, today one mature doe came up the hill and this doe came out and promptly ran her off, then about 30 minutes later another two stepped out and the aggressive doe came all the way across to run them off then came back out and fed a bit then walked into the tree line which is bedding, my question, why? 30 years I’ve been here and have never seen this, should I be concerned because I work hard to manage this property for deer, would this be over a fawn she’s protecting? I have seen one out a couple times but never with her.... thanks for all you do, I cannot tell you how much I say, well Dan says... to everyone and how much you’ve inspired me to turn my property into a hunting haven for my son.
As I wrote this, three doe showed up one with the dawn and two others seemed to be harassing the one with the fawn, and the one with the fawn looked like the aggressive doe I spoke of, I’ve never seen this, just wondering if you have and could shed light
Honestly dont know... I have seen some other aggressive and passive deer, both bucks and does and think, just like in humans maybe each one has its own personality.
@@thehuntingbeast I’m glad to hear you don’t know cause I’ve never seen nothing like it, in regards to personality we named the doe with the fawn spazzy a couple days ago cause she’s just over the top, my theory is, on one side is a primary doe bedding, then up too behind me is another, it almost seemed like the last couple days she had been trying to keep the other doe away from the lower bedding then today had enough and cleared out the other doe, went back got the fawn and moved her to the upper bedding, still doesn’t explain why the other doe were so aggressive towards the fawn and mother, my concern is her clearing the property of deer but tomorrow will tell, I wish I got video of today because it was nothing like I’ve ever seen, still sitting here trying to figure it out
Do you typically look for tracks at creek beds, tributaries and other moist places to give you an idea of what section of woods to hunt or scout? I have a hard time developing an eye for tracks in hard woods. It seems they’re hard to see apart from a heavily used trail being beat down and no snow. Thanks
I messed up the shot on the biggest deer I have seen in the woods two years ago big woods Wisconsin. Shot in elbow next morning tracked him in snow to his bed about 500 yards I was ver surprised at how small his track was, no different than many of the other deer tracks I ran into while tracking him which I did to his bed where he got up 30 yards away in thick aspen and walked away I couldn’t have shot him with a gun. Iam going to go throw up now again
When u hit the thumbs up 👍 button before Dan even starts talking!
As soon as I open the video

Same here
Love the videos!!
The workshop was awesome as well.
Jambalaya for the win👍
Hands down Dan is the definitive authority on details. His lessons have saved me years of learning. Nothing but the utmost respect for him.

I’m never going to look at tracks the same way ever again. Thanks Dan your the best 👍🏼
Would love to see how to interpret and find hill country bedding in thick ridges of laurel where there are more bedding areas than feeding areas

I want too go to Maine or the Adirondacks and track down a buck and shoot it. That's on my bucket list for sure! Great Video!

One question I have is how do you tell the difference between a big hog track and a big buck track?
Great video.
Dan do you have any trips planned for this upcoming season?
Mn DIY WILDERNESS BEAR, and where ever the challenge is
Favorite sign is buck tracks no question

When I moved from New England to deep Dixie I couldn't believe the size difference between the deer. It's like they were wool & run through a dryer 😢
U have a smart cat
No need to bugger an area with trail cameras, if you can rely on tracks & sign, like the old days. I still like checking trail camera pic's.
Your cat should know better than to hate people with dementia....j/k Really good video. Great info on tracks and tracking thanks!
Thanks Dan
Awesome info bro thanks.
I love deer hunters
Tanks for the video
Like to see how to hunt small farm wood lots mixed in rivers & creek oxbows! Thanks
