Wow that was a hard hitting story. Never read alot of green lantern stories but i have read the one where he gets taken over by the ultra violet light and didn't know what xangshi was. Another great video
Did he have the tattoo in that Winter story? Also, we know his tattoo ring status is going to change at some point because if the central battery goes down, it wouldn't affect a John Stewart that was powering himself with his own willpower. And since the Future State guys are writing the book next, this may get swept away as a mild hypertime revision.
It could, but we really won't know until we see the present day in Green Lantern #1. I just checked, and there were at least a few panels in Endless Winter #1 that clearly showed his tattoo ring.
@@MosaicComics But isn't Jo also powered by her own willpower? I feel like they forgot he is his own ring basically and now they're gonna have to come up with some bs contrivance.
@@pickedceasar1216 Right now John’s tattoo ring is loosely defined enough that they could go any direction with it. For all we know, the new series could start with John getting tests back showing that what the Ultraviolet did to him was temporary and has faded away. Or it could end up being a key factor in restoring the Battery eventually. You’re right, both John and Jo seem to be able to power their own rings...if they could somehow teach others, it could be a unique way to restore the fallen GLC.
@@MosaicComics that'd be cool if it's how they restart the corps but it really just seems like they conveniently forgot or are gonna use the vagueness of his powers as a reason for why he can't use them
@@MosaicComics Jess and Simon were able to recharge their rings without the batteries. Maybe it was because their rings were some of the first GL rings ever so their power was charged by/based on their own will. It’s funny, I think guy’s the only human with a regular GL ring anymore. Technically Hal still created his current ring and Kyle’s ring was from ganthet and became a white lantern ring.
Damn man. I didn't expect to find this channel on my recommended feed, but this was just a smashing video. You singlehandedly got me invested in John Stewart. I was always keen for Geoffrey Thorne's Green lantern, but only for his philosophy about comics, not the characters he was writing. Consider myself subscribed.
@@MosaicComics also just a quick question (although you may not have the answer), in the #1 of the book, John is using a ring rather than the tattoo. Is that a mistake? Or did he get a new ring in this event or an upcoming one?
@@thechaimug He’s had the tatoo in every appearance since the Ultraviolet Lantern storyline. I get the feeling that they just forgot about it, since it only ever appeared in Justice League and some Death Metal tie-ins. I hope that’s not the case, especially since the story Thorne is going to tell seems like it would be the a perfect place to explore what that kind of relationship to power would mean to John...and there’s still a chance, but I’m not going to get my hopes up too high. But who knows, maybe issue 1 was just too packed with setup to fit everything. We’ll see.
A great video and I really hope you do another about John because there’s so much to talk about. Btw, why does no one ever talk about his sister? I thought the issue where he learns to stand up again was powerful but I could see it being an unnecessary retcon. He already went thro so much at that point with Katma Tui, Mosaic and Xanshi but it helped give him more of a backstory IMO. It’s why I was bored and disappointed to read about it again in Snyder’s JL series. While I liked what Snyder did with John, I thought we were done talking about Xanshi after blackest night and it makes me think: did John ever talk to Martian manhunter before the totality? John was on the JLA after Kyle left in the 00s so he must have talked to MM about it at some point. Even then, it’s been ~30 years, some story should have seen him dealing with xanshi with MM and the JL. Honestly, I really hope Thorne talks about John beyond that specific moment tho because the character is just so well rounded and complex. For me, he’s the best when he’s accompanied by great characters like Katma, Guy and Kyle, leading the GLC and protecting the world with the JL.
Snyder basically did what a lot of long running movie franchises have done recently: make a modern sequel to the original that just ignores all the other movies that came between. Yes, the John/Martian Manhunter stuff doesn't make much sense when you consider that they have in fact been around each other in the 30 years between these two stories, but this was the only time I've ever seen them address it directly and bring some closure to that part of their history, so I don't mind the leap we had to take to get here.
@@MosaicComics Cool, that was what I was thinking but wanted to make sure with you that I wasn't forgetting any previous moments between John and MM/JLA. I kinda wish Snyder would've referenced other moments in John's life tho, especially after he just betrayed Sinestro's daughter before Snyder's run. @@kenlsten4651 I remember reading that issue at the time and not liking it (the sister reveal, not him standing up), mostly because I had never herd of John having a sister, and it felt like they just created a dead sister for the purpose of that moment. @@MosaicComics Yeah, I could see that being a case of "fridging" a character, especially unnecessary when you consider all the trauma John already went thro but I thought the issue was so powerful and well done that I ignored these problems.
