even if he decided to add the vintage AC/heater system later on he wouldn't need that panel opening anyways since it would sit directly under the dash, at most he'd need to add 2 or 3 holes for the compressor lines and coolant lines. also not having AC in California isn't that bad since it's a dry heat especially in socal, northern central valley that's a different story since 120+ with 0 wind happens far more often.

Nope. He just did a few minor things to enjoy the car for the time being while he waited to do a full "pro touring" resto-mod. With cars as old as this, there's never a "easy in, easy out" project lol. You're talking about 40 years of use, abuse, bumps, dents, wrinkles, crinkles and rust. Even a typical rebuild like starting from sandblasting or acid dipping the chassis and then moving on to do body repair, replacement and paint and you're easily $20-30k into it by the time the car is ready to have parts installed. By the end of it, I'm sure Jay will have about $80k+ into the build of the car by the time its finished to the point he can enjoy the car.
For people who don't know, it's easier to warp the panels with a coarse abrasive so in most cases it's easier to deal with those areas another way and not use media blasting.
I'm so happy for you. You've been hustling so hard for so long, you deserve this. There'll be twists and turns, ups and downs, but it'll be a ride. Enjoy!

I have a 67 that I've owned for 25 years... its nowhere near as nice as yours though. My son and I just started working on it this past summer (it's been parked since around 2000). Been fun to be a part of your journey with the car, looking forward to seeing all the progress yet to come.

building cars is what my folks do for a living. so ive seen a TON of cars that have been blasted down like this. and yes, outside of the trunk pan, quarter, and the dash sill, this is a pretty solid body.

I dont know if anyone has mentioned it or caught it, but your driver side floorpan has been replaced at some point as well. There was no seam on the tunnel down the length of it to where the seat mounting holes are. The floor pans were one whole piece from the factory.
I was right about the quarters. Wrong about tail panel and deck filler panel tho. Really didn’t expect the dash lol. But all looks fixable. Glad you’re doing it right!
Jay been a fan a long time. Just took delivery of a 2021 Audi TT RS. I plan on going full bolt on minus turbo. I've got a friend in Vegas I may be visiting this summer. Maybe we can hit a track day. Pics soon.
:p i actually can't wait to see it with all that spotty welding cleaned up... don't get me wrong it looks strong hold but really gobed on..... i don't know a lot about cars but iv been slowly self learning off the internet how to do small welding here and there, mainly wanted to learn for 4 wheeler frame a while back ^^ and a smooth weld really makes a difference cosmetic wise. O.o i'm still not great at welding btw but it is a learning process and its kinda relaxing.
Glad to see that you went down to bare metal; that's the way to do it if you're able. Reconsider the no A/C thing though because it is a creature comfort that you will regret not having and it will be one more excuse not to enjoy the car to the fullest and to hop into it every chance you get.
I just watched this video and the first one after you got the car in reverse order, and I think you were much more optimistic about what you might find hiding underneath the paint in the earlier one...
Oh jeez I just bought a 67 camaro in austraila .. looks strikingly similar . But at least watching all this is giving me some great knowlege on what to expect .. I'm not doing a full mod up .. Just a restore back to original . Fingers crossed..
Hi Jay, I was curious to know what body modifications (if any) you have in the works beyond the mini tubs. I'm not super versed in old muscle but I remember the windshield seal/mounting area being of particular concern over time. I vaguely remember Year One building a replica Camaro/Firebird (maybe the Burt Reynolds Edition?) where they updated certain things like removing the drip rails and integrating a modern flush mount windshield to not only clean up the lines but hopefully improve durability against the elements. Is this something you've looked into or do you intend to maintain a period correct exterior?
I candy root beer would look great on this car. With gloss blacked out grill and emblems. With minimalistic clean lines. A nice set of chrome or black 20s in the rear and 18s in the front.
I came very close to purchasing a 1980 Trans Am with the same mods in mind that Jay is doing. 4-link, mini tub, front and read suspension, wheels/tires was in the $30,000 range just for parts. That's when I realized I'm too poor to own an old muscle car. I bet he'll have WELL over $100k in this before it's done.
It would be really cool if the frame was a contrasting color. Or even metallic. It'd be this hidden thing and by looking underneath you could see the frame pop.

Since your mini-tubbing with a 4 link, are you going to change out the front subframe for something more modern? i/e Detroit speed or Art Morrison

I'd be buying an Art Morrison chassis with IRS for it, especially if you're planning on spending much time at the track.

'67 Camaro SS is my dream car and if I had the money I'd definitely have one.
