  • With winter starting to settle in and the weather becoming unpredictable, using a GoPro can be a bit of an issue. As a result I thought I would run a series of these short memory lane videos. If they prove to be unpopular things might change but I wanted to do them to get peoples memories and thoughts on these old but not ‘Classic’ bikes which I grew up with in one form or another. This time the bike that finished off the British motorcycle industry, at least for a while, the Honda CB750

Ah! Honda's of the 70s and 80s, rattling cam chains with broken tensioners. I remember them well. At the risk of being controversial the suzuki gs750 had a stronger engine....

That's a CB750KZ, with the new DOHC motor released in '78, I think. This model had a 4 into 4 and the 'F' version had a 4 into 2. Superb.

Memories. Had a CB750F1 in yellow back in 76. Ace bars, rear sets, Dunstall pipe and Yoshi cams, went very well until it got written off in a head on. I took a swift flying lesson but managed to land feet first and survived unscathed. Mad youthful days.

My word, there is a blast from the past, Dunstall 🤔 are they still going? Marvellous sound 😊 glad you survived. They were crazy times as I recall. Thank heavens there wasn’t as much traffic or Road furniture about back then. 😊

You're a extremely Lucky man.I did a somersault at 80kmh & landed feet first & broke both ankles & 3 fingers 3 ribs & punctured a lung & 3 discs in my back, died 3 times, needed helicopter 🚁 ride to hospital.Loose gravel on road & went off side of road & wheel dropped 6-7" & then got left handle bar caught in fence & broke 3 fingers & then hit concrete fence post & somersaulted. That was 3 months ago & I walking now with metal plates and screws in ankles but my back can flare up but Doc said it'll settle down in few months.
I already had a bad back & it worse now.I will still get back on bike & got a healthy insurance payout on bike & gear but get better first.I'll be happy if I can ride for at least 60mins. Before crash I only could do 2hrs max before needing to rest & stretch back. Also needed a drain under my arm for my lung & needed 2 blood transfusions & that drain was so uncomfortable & irritating. Some say I crazy 🤪 wanting to get on a bike again but I miss it & look forward to swinging leg over bike & feeling the wind but will be alot more cautious especially on NZ 🇳🇿 skinny 2 lane roads that are rough as & blindspots that could have gravel, debris etc in the Blindspot like corner that sloped down where I had my accident.

My first real street bike in 1983 was a ‘79 CB 750 F Supersport. I traded it for a speed boat. One of many regrettable vehicle decisions in my history. I really miss that bike. It was the same color scheme as the bike you were examining. I now have a 1983 CB 1100 Supersport. The last of the air cooled Honda superbikes. It will still give you chills even though it’s not as fast as modern superbikes, the 40 year old braking and suspension technology makes up for the lower power. It gets exciting when you run it up through the gears and then try to corner or brake.

At 16 after school, I'd walk down to Dennis Osborne at North Station roundabout in Colchester perhaps every other day and drool over the CB750/4 - K4 probably, in candy orange or that lovely aqua/turquoise colour, longing to be 17 and fortunate. (Kawasaki then was Ron Parkinsons at Marks Tey).
Two or three years later, a friend bought a CB750/4 K1. Tidied it up with a complete refresh. I recall that bike being such a lovely docile town bike, then out on the dual carriageway, it would hit the powerband and the four pipes would start to beat harmoniously but aggressively and it would take off.
About then, of course, the Z1 came out ad biking got really crazy.
Oh, happy days. And recalling Reg Millers in Colchester, Dave Bickers and Revitts in Ipswich (which held my attention for the BMWs)...drooling all the time - until I got my R90S :-)

Another good video! My late father had a 1976 Honda CB 750. It was red with matching fiber glass saddle bags and flaring. It also had a chrome rear luggage rack and passenger back rest as well as four into four pipes with the baffles removed: A little loud. That year's model had the single overhead cam. Great bike!

DOHC Honda CB 750KZ. Introduced in 1979, replacing the SOHC K7/F2.
It had a four into four exhaust system and was introduced as Honda’s answer to Suzuki’s mighty GS series. It was an improvement over the SOHC’s but i
was it a GS beater hmm?
A mate of mine got one new when they first came out; trading in his well thrashed 18month old 750 K7. He always said he liked F2’s; when he was passing them. Although theKZ was faster, handled better than the SOHC’s it lacked the low down torque of the touring K7.
I think the bike you were thinking of was the FB then FZ. Super dream styling with 4 into 2 exhaust.
