I always find it funny how every time a series or a movie blows up, there’s a specific scene from the climax that shows a character being emotional and people start losing their minds with the acting and saying that this actor should win an Oscar for that performance. It’s funny because it shows how little people know about acting. I’m an amateur actor and what I’ve learned over the years being on stage is that subtle acting is A LOT more difficult than being dramatic. Crying and screaming aren’t that difficult as people think. Showing depth during the quiet scenes is a lot more challenging and important to the development of the character. Take Miranda Presley in The Devil Wears Prada. Meryl Streep absolutely commands the audience with a performance that has no screaming, no crying fits, no dramatic outbursts. Miranda is a very calm and put together character, and Meryl knew how to make her absolutely terrifying with her eyes alone. That’s acting, and that’s a lot more difficult than raising your voice and being extra.
Completely disagree with you. I've never been interested in any of her projects (projects in which she's in). She has never wowed me. Difference between her and Lupita Nyong'o or Florence Pugh is incredible.
This is a very well articulated analysis on Tashi’s character and the meaning of the beach scene. I loved how you highlighted Zendaya’s subtle acting because that aspect of her performance in Challengers is super underrated.
hey i just wanted to let you know this is one of the cleanest, most concise, and most striking analysis of a movie scene i’ve seen in a long while. i hope this blows up
Absolutely loved your analysis of Zendaya’s work in this, really puts into words what I’ve been struggling to vocalise about why I’m obsessed with her acting choices.
Your dissection of the scene at the beach was profound! It really resonates with me- those moments of clarity you find in your youth that you labour to access again after adulthood has made you more utilitarian and realistic. I hope we all get to experience the sublime feeling that you're articulating for the first time something deeply true about how you exist in the world, it's rare. Subbed!
Your analysis of the beach scene and Zendaya’s subtle acting in this scene is really well done and made me view this interaction between Tashi, Art, and Patrick in an entirely new light. Great video!
I love Zendaya and Josh O'Connor they were really great, but the standout for me was Mike Faist. Bring so much, a subtlety to Art guy who felt like a shadow over Patrick. That probably made him jealous
I agree, the scene in the sauna when Patrick asks him if he matter and he's all like 'not even to the most obsessed tennis fan', but there's the brief second where he holds back tears and yeah that shit sold me on his perfomance
@xxgeminixx5675 Yeah, Josh O'Connor performance in Challengers is the best performance of his life. I viewed Patrick as this kid who doesn't want to grow and is also very charming and likable. I am not afraid to make a move, not forgetting about his ego and also to share notes on the scene in the bedroom. When Patrick tells about the past, you can see art get embar rassed and also feel uncomfortable. I feel like all art wants to be seen more than Patrick
It’s criminal how many dumbass people try to undermine her acting. She’s top 10 in the game rn for me and ima stay alive on that hill cause her films are the evidence….
Very true! It’s the desperation to be different and wanting to take this woman down a notch because she’s at the peak many said she would never reach and she’s only going higher. She beat the odds of having a perfect transition from Disney to adulthood with no dirt on her. Many of the criticisms on her acting stem from the fact that some people can’t separate Disney from her and that’s their problem. Not hers. They also can’t cope with the fact that there isn’t anything negative on her. She’s easily one of the best out of her peers 👏
Thank you! Comments like this are always so encouraging! I have so many videos I want to make, it’s just hard to find the time for it given how much effort each one takes.
I love Zendaya. I think she’s a fashion icon, beautiful dancer, an elegant and charming person. With that said, her acting is not her true talent. She has a passion for performance and I believe she will be great. She’s not yet captivated me with an on screen performance. I am excited to see the day.
@ I don’t prefer to watch shows with sexual violence as entertainment. I’ve seen some clips of her, and I agree, she does a great job! I just think overall, her portfolio for film is subpar. I’m sure she will improve but she needs classes for technique, first.
I believe Zendaya's great performances due to the director Luca getting THAT from actors - a lot of actors got their most critical acclaimed roles in his films. I enjoyed her performance even though I thought the male actors were more of a stand out.
That’s how you know she’s good at what she does. She stops being Zendaya to me and I actually believe she is her character. Suspending my disbelief is usually a hard thing for me lol
I feel like Zendaya always plays the same characters and her acting seems forced. It’s always the obvious sad face or happy face or edgy face or shocked face. You can see it when compared to the other actors in Dune 2 and in challangers she kind of faded for me. It’s like everyone on earth keeps saying how great she is but I never truly see her prove it with skill itself. It’s marketing
Her characters feel like the exact same person but in different circumstances. Like alternate universes of the same person. It's kinda boring tbh, I don't usually get that vibe from my favourite actors
@kita2361 the title of this video alludes to her acting in general. Still, she was the weakest of the trio in challengers, her average acting was more obvious when she was sharing scenes with josh o'connor.
@@Mai-jt6us regardless of the title, this video is about the beach scene in Challengers. But also, what did you find “weak” about her scenes with Josh O Connor? Tashi is a character that defines her self worth by her tennis skills, hates weakness in herself and others, and struggles with emotional vulnerability. In the dorm room scene with Josh O Connor for example, she goes from trying to intimately connect with Patrick’s character through tennis (which aligns with this video’s thesis about Tashi experiencing the most joy and serenity while playing tennis) to shutting down when she realizes he can’t connect to her in the way she wants, but beneath the icy demeanor she adopts, still displays genuine hurt after he leaves the room, showing that the argument they had actually did hurt her. In my opinion it was all very good subtle acting. What was your issue with it?
