As a painter who loves use of color, I'm devastated I've never noticed this; on the other hand its so seamlessly woven in all I can really feel is appreciation. Great movie, great video.
We were too focused on this great movie to notice it, the only one I noticed is the green light 8:15 where they sang together, I don't like that colour, it feels very "ghostly", like a horror movie filter into music video. Doesn't match imo
have a look at the starting scene, it always features red, blue and yellow in a certain order! I think it started with a girl in yellow, then we see someone in red, then blue! And so forth during the whole scene, it's so very cool!
Now I realize why I loved La La Land so much, apart from the story itself - the colorful palette. Kind of reminds me of why I like Wes Anderson films as well.
This is very similar to why I really like Gwen’s dimension in Across the Spiderverse, because they openly and unashamedly use so many colors that accurately convey the emotions of the scene even just visually alone. Pink is a color of feeling love, and when Gwen rushes in to hug her dad, the watercolor style spreads pink. When she’s found and her dad is assuming she as Spider-Gwen is the one who killed Peter, a deep red and black convey harsh, dark, sticky emotions. Every color adds to the emotional value of the scene, and will even change from shot to shot. I love it so much
I was gonna point this out too - the first two (even maybe 3 and part of 4) years/books/movie have a very different tone. It’s lighter, the main characters are kids, were entranced by the magic. Then as the war starts, the colors become darker and moodier which completely track the tone and stress of the characters.
exactly! even the logo changes to fit this, and by the end is deteriorating. it’s purposeful and done well, and if i remember correctly, at the very end in the future scene, the vibrancy is starting to show again
half blood prince's color editing is terrible though, they gave it a weird greenish brown sepia filter that makes everything, including hogwarts, the most magical place ever, look pale, flat, and boring. All the movies before and after that look better too so it's really weird that it just suddenly did that then went back to looking normal it doesnt even make sense narratively.
And you'll notice the color is brighter when they go into the Muggle world, and people just go about their lovely days unbothered by the war that's happening in the wizard world. It's absolutely intentional.
When I saw the argument scene and I noticed how green it was, I immediately thought there must be some reason why they use green. I'm too stupid to read between things, so your video really help me to understand La Land even more. Thank you for making me fall in love with this movie again!
i dont think you're stupid, we're just not prone to noticing such things. bet the next time you're watching a colourful show (or any show with wonderful colour grading) you'd notice stuff like that! 😉
Hey! For each of us, colors can differ significantly in meaning, and besides, the perception of color is also influenced by its tone. Sensory perception doesn't always help to understand what the author wanted to say.
I really like the movie, and I love Ryan and Emma and their chemistry. But this colour thing makes the whole movie even better 😀 gonna watch it again tonight 😊
The contrast of colors in old Indiana Jones compared to today is just shocking for all the worst reasons. I think in another 10-20 years we're going to look back on this era as depressingly bland and trying too hard to present "gritty realism" while sacrificing how beautiful the "real world" can actually be.
Exactly my thoughts! They also forgo humour in stressful situations, a number one coping technique for humans of all kinds. am I the only one who sobs with the end of Lalaland? I get such a bittersweet taste with that scene, happy for them but at the same time sad that they parted ways.
I’ve watched tons of videos on Lalaland and I must say that you’re the one that handled the subject of colors the best. This movie is very special to my heart cause it was like my awakening to cinema. And what really made an impact the first time I saw this movie was the use of colors. I knew it meant something. It reminded me of my French lessons in high school (I’m French) when we had to analyse a text, to see above the story, to pay attention HOW the story was told. So thank you for your fine analysis
The first part is also how the movie “Megamind” shows the convertment of Roxxanes trust for the villain who slowly becomes a hero. At the very beginning, Roxxane is wearing a Scarlett Red dress, the in the middle her dress becomes purple. At the end of the movie though, it becomes blue, the colour of the ‘Villain’ who becomes a hero towards the end of the movie. I think this is such a neat detail, it really shows how peoples trust can change just by a period of time😊
Edgar Wright did a great job in 'Baby Driver', with colors and thier symbolism that represents each character. I think he often does that in his films.
The Harry potter movies go from colorful to unsaturated gray colors as the kinds grow up, the magic of childhood starts to fade and the circumstances become more dangerous. Color is still used to set the mood, the atmosphere, of the movies.

The thing I’ve always loved about this movie is the color themes, but I could never figure out what the meaning was or the intention. Thank you for this.
this was a beautiful essay! i never watched the film since the genre wasn't my style, so i had no idea how detailed the visual design in it is. kind of a breath of fresh air.
I was able to follow everything you said and understood everything you explained. This really made my heart beat. I am so invested in colours and it makes so much sense! Loved this video!
This was such a great analysis. I knew colors had their own meaning in this film, but going from vibrant to muted and then back to vibrant by the end was so clever. Also using secondary colors such as purple to represent the combination for both main characters (blue and red) blows my mind. People usually associate red or pink with love but purple is perfect for them because it’s their real combination. I also noticed that she was wearing that yellow dress when the sky was purple. Yellow is opposite to purple
Thank you for this great analysis!! I think it is also very interesting how the colours are used from the beginning as a sort of foreshadowing : Seb is living in brown and more old-fashioned colours while Mia dreams in very vibrant hues and modern clothing. Even if during the middle of the movie they sort of join in the middle with Mia wearing warmer and lighter colours and Seb becoming more modern, they still feel out of place. So from the beginning they were foreshadowed as separate, on different part of the colour spectrum and it works very well at the end, with Seb being back in his brown suit and Mia's face on a very big movie billboard with all the bright colours she was wearing in the beginning of the movie!
I'm literally so glad someone made a video on this because honestly I've noticed it for years and have said it so many times but it seems no one has acknowledged it lol
thank you for this! i saw la la land for the first time recently and couldnt help but notice the significance in color. it was so fun for me to try to dissect what was happening and what every color meant while watching and after i finished the movie!
SPECTACULAR commentary and analysis! No wonder La La Land is one of my favourite movies - it's a story that's told in such a natural way that it's hard to miss. When you deep dive into it, everything is to meticulously planned out and has meaning. This is the pinnacle of hollywood for me. Not flashy eye catching CGI or snappy sex-craved plots thats are popular in today's movies.
Great analysis. I think the average viewer missed all this. It is criminal that this film didn't win Best Picture. There is a lot going on with every scene -- every one is literally moving art (freeze any scene and just look at it). So, amazing cinematography, old-school storytelling with an ending that isn't necessarily storybook, ridiculously great acting (rewatch Mia's First Audition), fabulous costuming, a great score, and amazingly tight and well-choreographed dance scenes. It covers themes of love, and finding dreams in real world often difficult to navigate. And it showcases a the often-hidden beauty of a city with notable warts. This can arguably be considered a perfect film.
This! As a photosensitive person I have to keep the brightness even lower than normal to avoid seizures and I’m nightblind as well so I need audio descriptions to see what the hell is happening in dark scenes. Otherwise I’m colorblind but I wish I could experience film live color-sighted people do
This is a fantastic study, never noticed how color is used like a symbol to represent their dreams and relationship. I think subtly I noticed how all the colors made the beginning feel more dream like but as the story went on and the colors faded it began to feel more real, and that kind of struck me.
This film has such a strong artistic energy. Thank you for explaining the meaning of colors and what they represent in this film! It's definitely my favorite movie!!
I’ve noticed this with the Scream Franchise. The first four directed by Wes Craven were very bright and colourful almost like it wasn’t meant to be a horror movie, then the new directors had the same dark palette a lot of modern horror movies use making the ambience a lot more serious
Siiirrr the Whiiiitte!!! It was my favorite part of the story telling. It makes very rare appearances, but it always appears when Mia is following her heart. It appears when they go on their walk to get to know each other, when she ditches her dinner date (the snow), during her one woman show, returning to her job as a successful actress, and twice in her dream montage when they fly to Paris/ have a kid. It was the very first color I noticed had symbolism in the movie!!
i watched la la land with my girlfriend for the first time a few weeks ago and she was surprised how much the colors struck me in the film. im glad im not the only one who was obsessed with it’s use in the movie!!!

Man you made me love this movie more than before. Thanks for making this essay!
I am also a color enthusiast, and the first time I watched La La Land i was blown away by the color usage and I loved it!
This! As a photosensitive person I have to keep the brightness even lower than normal to avoid seizures and I’m nightblind as well so I need audio descriptions to see what the hell is happening in dark scenes. Otherwise I’m colorblind but I wish I could experience film live color-sighted people do
Amelie was one the first movies which struck me how well colors could tell a story. Still adore that movie till date!
Another Emma Stone film with amazing colour palettes was Poor Things. Really helped add to the unnaturalness of all the settings
Oh yes, the colours and sets made it really otherworldly and amazing to look at.
First video I've seen of yours. Probably one of the best video essays I've watched. Subscribed.
It was the very first color I noticed had symbolism in the movie!!
i watched la la land with my girlfriend for the first time a few weeks ago and she was surprised how much the colors struck me in the film. im glad im not the only one who was obsessed with it’s use in the movie!!!
this vid made me cry omg, im already a fan of lala land but this analysis was amazing!! love this channel!
