Fiona Apple: Not All Geniuses Are Toxic
In this video essay, I pay tribute to Fiona Apple, one of my all-time favorite musicians and an inspiring model for any kind of artist. I trace some key features of her lyric personae, focusing on her wonderfully self-aware perfectionism. Fiona has continually reinvented herself from album to album (from Tidal, to When the Pawn..., to Extraordinary Machine, to The Idler Wheel..., to Fetch the Bolt Cutters), and yet her work has always shown a consistency of vision and personality that any artist should envy.

The Death of a Beautiful Woman: X and Aesthetic Horror
มุมมอง 700หลายเดือนก่อน
In this video essay, I analyze Ti West's 2022 slasher film X, starring Mia Goth, and discuss the role played by aesthetic disgust in horror movies. West brilliantly exploits this dimension in his powerful and even meditative film about youth and age, beauty and ugliness, that poses fundamental questions about how we view life and how we decide to live it. In this video essay, I analyze how Zendaya's brilliant, nuanced performance pulls together a wonderful scene in Challengers, directed by Luca Guadagnino and written by Justin Kuritzkes. Good Movies Still Have Good Posters (A Response to Nerdstalgic et al.)
มุมมอง 3638 หลายเดือนก่อน
In this video essay, I analyze three contemporary movie posters (for Chad Stahelski’s John Wick: Chapter 4, Todd Field’s Tár, and David Cronenberg’s Crimes of the Future), showing what a great job they do of conveying some of the substance of their respective films and rebutting the popular idea, forwarded by Nerdstalgic and other TH-cam channels, that the movie poster is a dead art form. How to Analyze a Confusing Movie: Mulholland Drive
มุมมอง 10Kปีที่แล้ว
In this video essay, I explain how to analyze a movie like David Lynch’s Mulholland Drive by paying attention to aspects of its form instead of getting lost in a maze of plot-based “theories.” Here, I focus on Lynch’s use of various kinds of close-ups and show how zeroing in on seemingly little details of presentation can get us thinking about the big ideas that a director is taking up in a giv...

How about the feminist horror of the author of the book getting an innocent man banged up for 16 years for a crime he dod not commit?
Everyone complains about this movie, but I thought it was excellent.
She’s not that good …
I love Boxing 🥊
She so fine
In greek methology aphrodite is born between the land& sea, similar to how Zendaya is portraited, incredible scene.
I feel like Zendaya always plays the same characters and her acting seems forced. It’s always the obvious sad face or happy face or edgy face or shocked face. You can see it when compared to the other actors in Dune 2 and in challangers she kind of faded for me. It’s like everyone on earth keeps saying how great she is but I never truly see her prove it with skill itself. It’s marketing
I didn’t what Challengers but wow Zendaya looks gorgeous in the blue dress! And her makeup and hair just blowing in the wind is so nice🥹
5:04 - haven't finished the video yet but i can't help but chime in. this part of Get Him Back, and the general idea of a lover who can never fulfill everything she wishes, reminds me of Periphery: "All that loving must have been lacking something If I got bored tryna figure you out You let me down I don't even like you anymore at all" it hits so hard because i feel that there are plenty of people (my past self included) who fantasize about their romantic partners, or even best friends and family, being telepathic towards all their emotions. for their partner to know when and why they're upset, or how exactly to comfort them, without needing to verbally explain things. though that sort of language can develop two people, the keyword is develop! i love romanticism, but it's not fair to expect others to magically understand you and forfeit your own responsibility to communicate your needs and desires. that said, sometimes it's simply frustrating to try to find your pair. it's not so much about giving a relationship enough grace, but the fact that the relationship was an ill match in the beginning (particularly in intellect, wit, humour, being interesting enough lol re: Periphery, etc). e.g. Paper Bag: - I was having a sweet fix of a daydream of a boy / Whose reality I knew, was a hopeless to be had - He said it's all in your head / And I said "so's everything," but he didn't get it / I thought he was a man but he was just a little boy (!!!) there's also our favourite anthem, Fast as You Can, that deals with the theme of struggling to let someone love you because you're painfully self-aware of how your emotional walls and your own self-destructive behaviours (one of many faces/interpretations of "the beast?") "You say you don't spook easy / You won't go, but I know / and I pray that you will... " (whew! the delivery of this line too. like she’s straining to hold herself back and keep someone at bay. GAAAHHHHHSJDJJDJHDH it's so hard for me to stop gushing about her songs <3)
Her characters feel like the exact same person but in different circumstances. Like alternate universes of the same person. It's kinda boring tbh, I don't usually get that vibe from my favourite actors
69th like ❤
Some scenes, like the one in the hatch, I couldnt watch. Which is a new thing for me. I can watch gore all day long, but I cant watch those scenes. When I finished the movie I cried for hours. I was horrified. You're not human if this movie didn't affect you
People hate that movie??? I can't believe it! It's a masterpiece. I saw it twice when it first came out in theaters, I've watched it many more times since and watching your video made me want to watch it again. (Usually, just hear about it makes me want to rewatch it).
Is this video a repost ? i feel like ive seen it already
There was an audio bug in the original upload, so I had to take it down to fix it.
There is also often a resilience in her lyrics that I love like in ‘Heavy Balloon’: “I spread like strawberries, I climb like peas and beans” or in ‘Every Single Night’: “Every single night I endure the flight Of little wings of white-flamed Butterflies in my brain”. In spite of all the bad she jus t wants to “feel everything”
to add, from the last verse of Red Red Red "But there's solace a bit in submitting To the fitfully, cryptically true What's happened, has happened What's coming is already on its way With a role for me to play I don't understand I'll never understand But I'll try to understand There's nothing else I can do" <3

Her Acting Is Phenomenal ❤
I always find it funny how every time a series or a movie blows up, there’s a specific scene from the climax that shows a character being emotional and people start losing their minds with the acting and saying that this actor should win an Oscar for that performance. It’s funny because it shows how little people know about acting. I’m an amateur actor and what I’ve learned over the years being on stage is that subtle acting is A LOT more difficult than being dramatic. Crying and screaming aren’t that difficult as people think. Showing depth during the quiet scenes is a lot more challenging and important to the development of the character. Take Miranda Presley in The Devil Wears Prada. Meryl Streep absolutely commands the audience with a performance that has no screaming, no crying fits, no dramatic outbursts. Miranda is a very calm and put together character, and Meryl knew how to make her absolutely terrifying with her eyes alone. That’s acting, and that’s a lot more difficult than raising your voice and being extra.
Love a lot of your videos!❤ Would love a review on Smile 2 easily the best horror I've seen this year ❤

I loved your video,is just that i think ragging bull is a sporting movie boxing is not a pretty sport is something that tend to attract broken people like jake to it,and this movie does a great job at explaining how boxing is an outlet for aggression how it can be corrupt and what being a champion does to people, there are boxer that became genuinely better people because of the sport but not jake and i really like the movie for being honest about the man and the sport
😂. Zendaya is not a good actress. I wish they had cast somebody else in Dune 2. She made a mockery of herself and the character.
David Lynch is a self-avowed Surrealist. By default, his works have no intellectual content - nor should they - as they must be blind products of his sub-conscious, to be legitimate Surreal art. I enjoy his films as I would enjoy watching a cat chase a ball of string. I enjoyed 'Twin Peaks', but not as a valid piece of art (being intentionally devoid of human rationale), but more as 'a spectacle' or 'freak-show'. The secret to making Surrealism attractive to cinema-goers, is to punctuate it with gratuitous violence, sex, profanity and all kinds of moral aberrations. If you expelled those elements from David Lynch's films, you would be left with next to nothing. One could apply the same rule to Kubrick and Tarantino films, although Tarantino is an Exhibitionist of carnage, rather than a Surrealist. Surrealism goes hand in glove, not only with Materialism, but also with Modernism, as it removes all moral responsibility from the artist, given that it is the blind matter in the surrealist's brain, which creates the product, rather than their free-will. I find 'Dune' to be Lynch's most appealing film, as he manages to squeeze a voluminous and messy novel into a logically coherent and unpretentious sci-fi movie. If we judged Lynch's films as pieces of fine art, we would have to dispose of a great deal of them, as grotesque and immoral trash. Isn't it wonderful that we can watch this salacious dross and still congratulate ourselves, for being intelligent and sensitive connoisseurs of high art?
I though she was the weakest part of such a strong esemble in dune. It was distracting.
This video isn’t about Dune at all. It’s about her movie Challengers. What does your opinion on Dune have to do with it?
@kita2361 the title of this video alludes to her acting in general. Still, she was the weakest of the trio in challengers, her average acting was more obvious when she was sharing scenes with josh o'connor.
@@Mai-jt6us regardless of the title, this video is about the beach scene in Challengers. But also, what did you find “weak” about her scenes with Josh O Connor? Tashi is a character that defines her self worth by her tennis skills, hates weakness in herself and others, and struggles with emotional vulnerability. In the dorm room scene with Josh O Connor for example, she goes from trying to intimately connect with Patrick’s character through tennis (which aligns with this video’s thesis about Tashi experiencing the most joy and serenity while playing tennis) to shutting down when she realizes he can’t connect to her in the way she wants, but beneath the icy demeanor she adopts, still displays genuine hurt after he leaves the room, showing that the argument they had actually did hurt her. In my opinion it was all very good subtle acting. What was your issue with it?
@@kita2361thank u for saying this bro. Cuz I was wondering why so many of these comments aren’t even responding to what this dude is talking about in the video 😅😅. Sucks because this is actually a good video essay.
@@Orivime556 thanks. One thing I really loved about Challengers was its subtlety. There’s so many small subtle quirks that each actor in the trio incorporates into their performance that tells you so much about their character without it being obvious. Like at the party when Mike Faist’s character Art scrapes the frosting off his snack, and only eats the fruit, while Patrick devours everything he sees which shows you how Art is more disciplined and serious about his health, while Patrick is far more careless. There’s a lot of video essays analyzing the things I’m talking about, but this is the only video I’ve found that is specifically looking at the subtlety in Zendaya’s performance and it does suck that it’s been found by people who don’t care about this movie at all and are only interested in bashing Zendaya, without even interacting with the actual video itself 😬💀
This is a very well articulated analysis on Tashi’s character and the meaning of the beach scene. I loved how you highlighted Zendaya’s subtle acting because that aspect of her performance in Challengers is super underrated.
a simp worshipping an overrated "actress"
they were all so young looking while playing their adult selves so they lost me with that, especially zendaya. it wasnt believable of me.
Beautiful analysis
It’s criminal how many dumbass people try to undermine her acting. She’s top 10 in the game rn for me and ima stay alive on that hill cause her films are the evidence….
She’s really obvious with her acting I never get truly moved. She always plays the same characters and her voice is constantly monotone.
@ watch euphoria then come back respectfully 🫡
Very true! It’s the desperation to be different and wanting to take this woman down a notch because she’s at the peak many said she would never reach and she’s only going higher. She beat the odds of having a perfect transition from Disney to adulthood with no dirt on her. Many of the criticisms on her acting stem from the fact that some people can’t separate Disney from her and that’s their problem. Not hers. They also can’t cope with the fact that there isn’t anything negative on her. She’s easily one of the best out of her peers 👏
@@Dragonfruit28 now she’s on Nolan’s next film 👀 🔥
Ah yes more essays! Please explore challengers, matchpoint, under the skin... Love your videos!

sorry but her acting is mid
sorry but her acting is mid
It's not OBJECTIVELY speaking tho and i am not even a fan, she's average at worst, she has the best acting quality and that is subtlety just like in real life, she doesn't overact or underacts
I love Zendaya. I think she’s a fashion icon, beautiful dancer, an elegant and charming person. With that said, her acting is not her true talent. She has a passion for performance and I believe she will be great. She’s not yet captivated me with an on screen performance. I am excited to see the day.
Have you not seen euphoria? my god that girl can act
@ I don’t prefer to watch shows with sexual violence as entertainment. I’ve seen some clips of her, and I agree, she does a great job! I just think overall, her portfolio for film is subpar. I’m sure she will improve but she needs classes for technique, first.
Sending this video to the trolls that try to claim she can’t act. She’s a natural.
In my experience, the men in this film, all of them, are common... I am decades into this being-a-female-human experience. I have lived in 6 cities and traveled to several other states and countries....This film is sufficiently horrifying because, with exception of the supernatural elements, this story isn't unrealistic or unlikely to occur to any singular woman...or even to a man upon whom male desire is thrusted. We don't need supernatural elements to catalyze disgust, fear, and repulsion as reality offers a cornucopia of disturbing devolutions to select from for the silver screen. This film is effective because it makes contact close to "home." With respect to the terrifying personalities portrayed by the men of this film, please know that if you haven't experienced this behavior you are one of the select few. I would caution against saying "not all men..." just because it hasn't been experienced by you. It's like saying "racism isn't that serious" just because you are out of touch with the systems of oppression that are at play...keeping in mind that sexism runs even deeper. Stay diligent in your pursuit of a clear grasp of reality. Ciao, belles.
Which is the movie name
I have said it before and i will say it once more: You, you have a really good head on your shoulders.
You just put words to the feeling i felt after watching this movie you deserve a sub
nobody does it like zendaya
I love when she does the celebratory scream again in the very end!

Horrible analysis if you don't even know the source material.
I believe her acting and she’s a sight for sore eyes
That’s how you know she’s good at what she does. She stops being Zendaya to me and I actually believe she is her character. Suspending my disbelief is usually a hard thing for me lol
