- This is what happens when you have fashion designers design costumes for movies. I literally spent hours rewatching and screenshotting "Challengers" in order to zoom in on the tiny details. From her Cartier stud earrings to her one-time mother of pearl necklace, there was a lot to take in on my subsequent watches. I'm obsessed with this movie!

That blue dress for the 2006 adidas party really took me back to that period of time! Such a great choice. All of tashis looks were extremely well done- and very believable for her trajectory in the movie
i agree! it was a very natural progression
For me it's the green vertical striped button down shirt. That screams '06 to me in a way that wasn't too obvious.
24:53 Tashi wears her daughter's handmade bracelet as if it were gold. That's so sweet, and it does fit with how loving she is to her in all their scenes. She may not have loved Art, but she did love their daughter.
One thing I haven’t seen anyone mention yet is that the white shirt that Tashi wore when making out with Patrick in the wind storm is the same shirt she swapped with him during the fight at Stanford. So each time Tashi and Patrick sleep together while her and Art are together, one of them is wearing the other’s old shirt, maybe symbolizing the power dynamic. Tashi’s is just less overt.
I was trying to figure this out, bc I thought they were the same but it wasn't confirmed for sure (so I left it out). I love the analysis though!
@@gimmepuffsleeves It's definitely not Patrick's shirt. She changes into that shirt while she's still in the hotel with Art and their daughter. Zendaya got asked about the shared clothing in the movie and talks about how that white shirt she wears to go ask Patrick to lose the match for Art (and their marriage) is in fact Art's shirt. The "I Told Ya" shirt was originally Tashi's but then Patrick steals it. Patrick also wears the shirt Art originally wears to watch Tashi win her match against Anna Mueller to later when al three of them were in the hotel room later that night. Art is the only one that doesn't steal anyone else's clothes interestingly enough, but the other two have both stolen his own. Update: finally got to the end of the video and yes your research was correct and this commenter is sharing misinformation 🤦🏾

the three intertwined cartier hoops........ POETIC CINEMA
it's *chefs kiss* perfection
I've been waiting for someone to do a costume analysis on challengers omg
i was rushing to get this out bc i feel like someone else would have done it already!
Contemporary costuming gets overlooked a lot and this movie shows perfectly how you can use it to convey a story about privilege and the fashion is a clear example of quiet luxury.
I looove that the Cartier jewellery is introduced, it’s the TRINITY range. Somebody commented that the names, Tashi Art and Patrick all share something to do with ‘tri’… I wish I could remember that factoid. Also the TWO love bracelets, and then the one of her daughter… ugh! That’s just so clever! This movie is too good.
When I found out about the Trinity necklace, it pushed me to make this video because omg?!
Also Tashi asks if he thinks she's Jesus and he says yes
THIS IS LITERALLY THE EXACT VIDEO I'D BEEN CRAVING SINCE I SAW THE MOVIE! Contemporary fashion and costume design is so overlooked for more obvious flashy runway/red carpet pieces and I always just find the detailed curation of cool ready-to-wear or common items so much more interesting than haute couture
Yesss I'm so glad! 💖
when i watched it the second time, i thought about her silver and gold jewelery for fire and ice! but i wasnt sure if that was a reach, now i know it was great detail!!!
They got so many tennis fits so right, in such detail from the shoes to the shorts that are loved by tennis players. Those chequered shorts Patrick wears are so recognizable.
Also the Uniqlo is such a flex because Uniqlo just doesn’t sponsor - they sponsor the goats and only the goats.
YES. This movie is 5 stars - the time jumps don't bother me when we get intentional art like this. The costuming, the music, the character studies. This is my first favourite movie in a long while.
Exactly! Everything is done purposefully, plus it's amazing for rewatches 💖
[about art and patrick in the sauna scene] "I have nothing of importance to add here, since they're just in their towels. I just liked looking at them" BIG GIANT MOOD lmao 😭😭😂😂
no but really. this is a great analysis and I enjoyed watching this video. I've been obsessed with this film for a while now (and mike faist made me feel feelings I havent felt since I was like 14 or 15, but that's besides the point. and I won't elaborate lol). the costumes in this film are quite fascinating to look at, and throughout the film, I kept experiencing fashion envy at adult tashi's wardrobe (90% of it is the dress she wears for the actual challenger) and just resisting the urge and desire to rob her wardrobe and accessories 😭😭. I really liked how they played around with the "fire and ice" motif, and you've definitely pointed out details and interpretations I haven't noticed before, so thanks for that too.
thanks so much! 💖 i literally went out and bought some (non-cartier) gold bracelets and tenniscore tops lol
I never noticed Patrick's wallet but I did notice Art's wallet in the Applebees scene. It's a cheap velcro wallet
Awesome video! Watched this movie twice already and was so struck by how fresh and sporty and clean and beautiful everything was. But was mostly thinking of the cinematography at the time so it was really wonderful to go in depth with how the costume design contributed to all that. Recently subscribed to your channel and thoroughly enjoyed this one as well! Very excited to see what you come up with next!
the cinematography was so gorgeous too 😍 thanks so much!
This got recommended to me while I was on a Mina Le binge! I knew the wardrobe in this movie meant SOMETHING but never had the fashion interest and knowledge to analyze it myself so this video is a blessing. Subbed
im honored to be in the same algo as Mina! Love her 💖 thank you for watching!
The filled hoop almost looks like a shield. Her defensiveness in that scene?
Oh yea for sure!
As a watch fanatic the choice of watches stuck out immediately for me. Still trying to figure out what watch Patrick is wearing but him wearing the same one throughout the film is a nice touch to show that he never matured.
let me know if you figure out the brand!
It's also a lowkey luxury watch that looks worn. It's the connection that he keeps to his uber-wealthy family
@@nataliajimenez1870 very much so, still trying to figure out what brand it is lol
10/10!!!! I wish I could like this video twice! This was not only well researched and well presented but also well organized. I love how you concluded this with the theme of 3s with Tashi's jewellry!!!! Amazingly I know nothing about costume design but I clocked a lot of this subconciously without ever realizing. The gradual hair and stylistic changes over the years, the repeated actions with switched pairs (spitting out the gum) and how their personalities were reinforced through their clothes.
I loved the movie and this made me love it even more!! Seriously well done!
thank you so so much!
The symbolism of the Cartier jewelry in particular is so significant imo.
Absolutely agree with you about the Trinity set. Like, hmm the TRINITY pendant, you say? What could that POSSIBLY mean in this movie about the complex relationship between three people??? Lol
Also, the Love bracelets feel very much like a set Art gifted to her, them having to screw on and off could definitely symbolize his controlling nature/insecurity in their relationship. He wants something that shows that she won’t ever leave him.
Fascinating!
6:23 finally someone appreciates JFK jr. His father was attractive but Junior himself was just out of this world GORGEOUS! I love their “old money” style and I wish more characters were Kennedy inspired!
it's interesting how in closet before the match when art is looking at his younger self it at least for me can be interpreted as his passion to tennis got smaller compared to when he was younger in a way like the same colour was only on sleeves not fully on clothes (i hope it makes sense haha)
I was so hoping someone creative enough would make a video like this for Challengers, I'm not the only one obsessed with JA and Luca's attention to detail!!! I would love if you could maybe do a video on the set design for the film, I feel like it's just as fruitful. Specifically scenes like Tashi's dorm and then her and Art's hotel room, her vanity sets, etc. xxx
omg the sets were so great too! i zoomed into her dorm bulletin board and it was filled with so many tiny details.
I’m OBSESSED with this video, thank you for getting into allll the details!!! I loved this film because every little detail shows how the characters grow and change over time. More analyses of contemporary costumes pls, I’m here for it 😊
okay thank you so much for this, i have spent so much time thinking about this movie, but the costuming is one aspect where i never feel knowledgeable enough to comment. you’re really just giving me more excuses to keep talking about this perfect movie and I am nothing if not grateful
you're very welcome! i feel like i'm the one in the friend group who will not stop talking about this movie
The costume design for this movie is so believable for real life. I kept looking for each character's signature item and how people might start wearing them when Challengers got popular. Great video. Cheers. ✨
This just popped up on my feed and I love it! Anderson nailed Tashi's wardrobe and I love your attention to the details ❤
Did you also notice how tangled her necklaces were in different scenes???
Omg yes!
very cool! loved all the info you put into this! i really enjoyed esp the clothes swapping in the movie, they were indicating so much with these items, and it was so subtle.
great video, your focus not only on the clothes but also on jewelery is so impressive!
this was incredible, i usually don’t notice much of wardrobe during a first watch, but this just blew my mind, bravo
I like these types of videos about films, I’m also very happy to see the international support for Guadagnino.
he's truly an icon. can't wait to see his future work!
I am obsessed with Art's Uniqlo polo shirt and am sad that it's a unique collaboration so I can't buy one in my size. LOL
they should've released a challengers x uniqlo collab right after the movie!
something i find interesting is that art never borrows a shirt from tashi or patrick even though they both borrow from him and each other
good point! guess it fits his character since tashi and patrick are more aggressive
I adore the detail and editing, this is fascinating. So happy i discovered your channel! Keep it up, cant wait for more fashion analysis✨
I really love the constant theme of connection and how often they are so intertwined with each other through - like you mentioned - the bits of jewelry, the borrowing of clothes and the parallel moments they share with each other. It's like another way to view their love story and have a more in-depth look on who they are and what their state of mind is at certain pivotal moments. This was such a cool video - I know the research must have been insane😫
i spent a whole night pausing the movie to stare at the details lol!
ty u made me more obsessed w this film now
As a fresh costume designer I'm so happy to find your channel!
This movie made me believe in cinema again. I’ve never seen such a sexy, genius movie like Challengers.
ugh this so good. the costumes do SO much to tell you about where the characters are in their journey not just with themselves but each other. loved this video. new subscriber for sure 👍🏻
Costume design is so fun for that reason! Thank you 🥰
Amazing!! I so appreciate the amount of research you put into this...now I have to rewatch Challengers!
The research was easy since it meant watching the movie a zillion times 😆
i was thinking about the costuming throughout my first watch and am so happy to have stumbled across this video!!! amazing work
First time i see a video about modern costuming and I loved it!!!!
sucha good video!! brilliant analysis i can tell your so so passionate about this topic and it was amazing to follow / write down notes alongside it :) !!
thank you so much!
I have an obsession with Persol sunglasses, I notice , almost anytime they are in a scene, they are usually to give the actor an edgy and serious appearance.
Here for the first time, and i loved it!!. Thnxs for the effort, the research and developing such a great video❤❤
i seriously loved your input on this video, i watched the movie twice and i did not catch a couple of things. thats why i'm glad i watched your video and your insights!
Thank you for watching!
It's fascinating, I didn't realize until you went through every single outfit that Patrick is wearing blue in almost every scene except for the sauna scene. Since Art is ice and blue is representing that, I see it as a way of him never letting go of his attachment to Art, keeping Art with him at all times. And then in the sauna scene he doesn't need to be reminded of Art because he's there trying to rekindle their connection. He both doesn't need the reminder because Art is right there and he's baring his soul to Art essentially.
I'm feel like I'm missing something though since blue shows up a lot in the movie. The opening shot is the field of blue of the tennis court. I think it may also symbolize something else. But I'm not sure what. If anyone has any ideas, please share!
If you enjoyed the use of costuming to establish timeline here, you should do an analysis of 'Two for the Road' with Audrey Hepburn and Albert Finney - told in a nonlinear narrative where her hair and dress are the only sure indication of where in the story you are.
it has been on the watchlist but you're convincing me to watch it asap!
You have driven me back, great subject.
Incredible video!!
This video is sooo amazing im obsessed
thank you!
love this
Amazing research!! great video
aspiring costume designer here! loved your analysis soo much. super insightful and i can’t wait to see your channel grow!
team throuple 🎾
Hell yea 🎾🎾🎾
thanks for this video, sooo informative:)
This was so gd interesting thank you queen.
This movie is so layered and addicting omg i loved the jewelerly analysis and how much these three were color coordinating (i only caught onto the obvious Stanford days scenes)? Thanks for this addition!
I think the necklace with the filled circle instead of a hoop symbolises their daughter
that was impressive, thanks
i'm proud of this one, thank you!
great analysis!
thank you so much!
Really amazing video
I have been waiting for this 🤍🩵 Love it! 💕Would you also be making a video on all the outfits ZENDAYA wore during the press tour? 🎾 They were amazing!
i don't have any solid plans rn but those looks had me drooling!
beautiful video
Love this video! ❤️Can you do a video on the Bridgerton costume design?
Just finished s3 a couple of days ago! I'll see if I can come up with an interesting concept
I actually had no interest in this movie, but after your thorough research and breakdown of the costume design, I am going to give it a watch! I love the thought behind costume design and think it can add so much to the overall theme(s). Thanks for the great video!
this made me so happy!
Yess costume analysis
Bravo well done 👏🏾
I’m desperately trying to find the whole catalogue for the props that were auctioned 😭😭😭 where did you find the pics you used? I would love to see everything that was auctioned 🥲🥲🥲 amazing vídeo btw!! 💗
thanks! i had to use the wayback machine but only a couple of pics showed up. think there was a tiktok video that had some screenshots too
Zendaya is really representing us slim girls in this film 😮💨 she looks so effortlessly sexy.
FINALLY someone is talking about what really matters, the costuming!!!! (The boys kissing is important too, but still)
Two of my favorite things 😆
@@gimmepuffsleeves priorities in the right place 😌🤣
I wish it had been more analysis heavy- especially in the middle. It felt like at a certain point you were just listing what they were wearing which is something I can clearly see myself. I wish you didn’t feel the need to address every single outfit but rather choose a few impactful moments that inform the whole. other than that, great video!
Fair point!
I went into the movie independent of what anyone who had seen it already thought, then I came out thirsty and went online and found out I wasn’t the only one 😂 0:16
Tashi’s costumes were nice. But I feel the costuming for the guys was really lackluster. Especially the hair. They never looked like they were in their time periods. And where were the baggy clothing, spiked hair, layered tees, and New Balances, neon colors, and skinny jeans, all which were popular for men in the late 2000s and 2010s?
me if they included skinny jeans 🥵
New Balance was a dad shoe.
Spicy hair seems very boyband, jersey shore like. They were trustfund rabies. I'd expect them to look like old money
Saving this to watch later 🎾 brb
great video and editing! also what is the name of the black and white movie in the beginning of your video?
Thank you so much! It's "Strangers on a Train" by Alfred Hitchcock (1951).
Great video!! I have been looking for that Stanford hoodie Tasha wears on the court ever since I saw the film. Is it an actual design or made for Challengers?
I've searched on the Stanford merch site and couldn't find a similar design. It was likely custom made but when the auction releases the pics, we should be able to figure it out.
I love how even though Tashi’s clothes, accessories, and hairstyle became more expensive, more “successful”, it all kind of washed her out compared to the lush jewel tone t-shirts and casual clothes she used to wear. She was still gorgeous definitely, but with her lightened hair and lighter clothes she looked like her life was getting sapped from her the further she got from her “good f*cking tennis”. The accessories, adding on more and more felt like desperate attempts to overcompensate. She used to make fun of the privileged rich kids who didn’t treasure hard work, but now since she can’t even play tennis, she tries to make herself feel whole with the things she once scorned.
so true
Could you do a review of “A Perfect Story/ Un cuento perfect” a Spanish series????
i've never watched it but i'll take a look!
I may be losing my mind, I generally don't look for or believe a lot of overt symbolism besides the usual color theory and character work, but you said she wore a filled necklace instead of a hoop (the only time) directly before mentioning the first scene with her daughter, when she's putting her to bed. Maybe that was supposed to indicate she was pregnant before the time skip? Or that she briefly found fulfillment in her wealth and child before becoming unhappy with her marriage and situation? Idk.
I like your editing style. But I wish you provided more analysis. All you really do is state what they’re wearing and sprinkling in some context here and there, but other than that you don’t go in depth about any of their outfits and why the costume design is so “genius” as you describe. The last 10 minutes of the video is what I wish you did for the whole 30 minutes honestly, because your analysis, although scarce, is great! I wish you just did that instead of telling me what they’re wearing…
Noted! Thank ya for the feedback
you remind me of anya taylor joy for some reason
I love her so much omg
Isn't Art also not that well-off? Perhaps, I got that wrong. I love the wardrobe
Not as wealthy as Patrick, but he went to that fancy boarding school so 🧐
I do love your videos.I would only say you need to analyse a bit more and describe the outfits less.
im missing where the actual commentary/thoughts are on the design. all youre doing is telling us what we can already see that they are wearing...
her commentary is sprinkled throughout, she points out the parallels, symbolism, context, etc of each piece
Why?
we’re using the term genius a bit too loosely
So so wrong. Really hard to make Zendaya look not great, but they managed it.
