Fun fact: The blue and yellow Toads in NSMB Wii have actual names. They are never mentioned anywhere in-game, nor in the manual, but their names are Bucken-Berry and Ala-Gold. They're nicknames given by the developers that me and my friends now just use as their actual names.

The ridiculously hidden secrets in NSMBU were probably put in with Miiverse in mind, as it was encouraged to ask for help on Miiverse if you were stuck on something.
But at that point you are just looking up the answer
Miiverse was launched at the end of 2013, a year after NSMBU came out.

I'll never understand why the later games didn't bring back the Mario vs Luigi mode (9:45). It was such a great multiplayer game mode, they could have expanded it further.

18:37 I believe those three wheels are supposed to introduce the player to the triple flip jump, as you feel confident to run and jump on them, and as a kid i found it that way, so i think it’s a good way of introducing the player to a movement characteristic.
NSMB2 getting the respect it deserves is heartwarming, but now I'm excited to give NSLU a try!

I do feel like more and more people are coming around on this game, as people are beginning to rate it even above the Wii game.
I’ve played and 100% NSLU, and it is every bit as challenging as he says it is. I found a lot of merit in speedrunning the time attack challenges if you play it through Deluxe.

Officially, they’re known as fortresses. This is also what most people call them.
I call them towers anyways, because they’re vertical levels that also happen to look like towers on the map.
For Super Luigi U. The developers had impossible moments where the faster timer would make it impossible to finish a level, so they decided to have the timer count actual 100 seconds.
Fun fact, Free for All is a mode where you try to kill your opponent to complete the level yourself so its says "Mario Finish" for example.

the "2nd player can place blocks" was actually the main reason I liked NSMBU best, though. I've always found the co-op in this series frustrating rather than fun - you're just getting in the way. But with NSMBU, my sister was able to support me via the gamepad and we beat the hell out of the game! Felt good to cheese levels with the bonus blocks.
Also, the overworld was neat. I don't mind the abrupt transitions between themes at all, and I really enjoyed the way the hidden paths construct themselves and connect the world.
We played the Luigi DLC and it was fun, too, but I honestly didn't feel any difference in the quality of level design. It was all just kinda "ok", like the series as a whole.

After looking back at the whole series, DS is the only one with a unique tower or castle theme. Actually, many of it's themes aren't reused.

Another cool thing about the coins in NSMB2 is that it finally gives a reason to exist for the time limit. If you had infinite time, collecting many coins in a level wouldn't be as impressive. It doesn't seem very intentional as the game doesn't really play with the time limit regarding coins though, which would've been very cool. Like imagine one NSLU-like stage with only 100s but lot of places to go all field with coins but in many different way and where you have to really master the game and make the most optimal path to get a high score while still being fast enough to finish the stage, that would be a banger.

When you ground pounded that "?" block you moved the top of that block down just a tiny bit with yourself immediately on top of it, meaning that you are no longer in entirely above the brown block on the right and the solid wall in the left.
You got crushed in between the right block and the left wall as the two blocks were moving left since those blocks would've continued moving left til they went behind the left wall.
Tony was only trying to get a Yoshi that matched his character’s color. He picked up your blue Yoshi and left you with a pink one.

Even though most of my early childhood memories were playing wii I also owned a ds back then and it is my favourite out of all off them. I even have my ds next to me as I'm typing this out.
Every time I start the game, a wave of nostalgia hits me.
It still holds up better than the other NSMB games in my opinion. Boss fights are better, level design is better, better history of speed running than the others, and the turtle shell alone makes it better than the others.

When I would play with my 3 friends at the time (we were all in the same neighborhood) I was always P1, so I always got the Green Yoshi, which I was fine with, but the other 3 would fight for the Yellow Yoshi.
Fun Fact: World 7 has a Lakitu in a dark grey cloud as the final boss, which heavily implies that they were the creators of the lightning that hit the castle in the intro cutscene
Fun fact: Nobody loses a life if everyone gets into a bubble. It just ejects you out of the level. In fact, you actually demonstrated it on 17:24. It's a useful tactic to prevent losing a life if you're about to lose and everybody's already in a bubble

NSMBDS will always be my favorite, because of how incredibly good the multiplayer versus was. Personally my favorite multiplayer gamemode in the franchise. Also bonus points for unique bosses and just generally good level design. Also, Luigi Poker is the best.
I remember my siblings took the the cover paper off most of our DS games so it was a roulette when you found a random, coverless game on the floor but finding New Super Mario Bros was always such a treat

45:57 There’s actually an explanation as to why you got squashed here. When you groundpound a block and it moves slightly down, Mario’s/Luigi’s hitbox goes down with it. And since you were close to that moving wall, it pushed you into the block that hadn’t been slightly lowered, as such pinning you and killing you.

@@therealmariofan I mean, you have to look at the context here. They are fun sure, but if you have the same meal every single day with next to no changes, eventually you are going to want SOMETHING new instead of the same meal.
People were just burnt out due to how often they were coming out with barely any changes.
Silo isn't trying to say they are not fun (because they can be), he's saying what we and even how Nintendo now feel. The series lost its magic by the third entry, and announcing TWO games, in the same e3, really did not help things. Just cause you enjoy them, does not mean peoples feelings are suddenly invalidated. They are just as valid as your own!
I have always held that each game taken individually is amazing but taken as a whole (along with Mario land and Mario world) is not good because of the sameness

Like it or not, Wii was an easy win for me. The game popped out so much and was unforgettable, and I just loved it. I know other New Super Mario games had more features and were better in some sort of way, but Wii has so many memories I love it.
Wii was more ballsy and had more memorable levels. The world 9 was an amazing addition to add harder levels so the main game would still be playable for beginners

There's one thing that you need to consider: each of these is someone's first Mario. The first couple worlds *have* to be basic, because they're the tutorial. That's also why they do one for each console (though 2 shoulda been a Wario Land, or at least had him as a playable character. I mean, it's all about getting filthy rich, ffs!)
NSMBU was my first non-MKWii Mario game.
Funnily enough, Wario was intended to be in NSMB2 as the reward for collecting 1M coins as an unlockable and playable character. But the developers found out that the time it would take to put him in the game and fix any potential glitches would push it's release date to NSMB U.

This video surprisingly showed up in my recommendations July 2nd 2022 and I'm so happy I saw it. Such an amazing perspective. I've played all of the games except for the 3DS one and now I'm curious about playing that at some point. Also I felt really certain right from the get go you would like New Super Luigi U the most even before getting far into this video.
This is probably my favorite video in this entire site. Its so well edited and I enjoy coming back to it from time to time. The way you give your thoughts on all the NSMB entries is very entertaining to watch and listen to ^^

He didn't mention an unbelievable # of new things in Wii. World 9, hidden walls, POW blocks are back, new moves, enemy courses, and the list goes on. Also, yes, 9-7 is PURE HELL. Scratch that. All of World 9 is ABSOLUTE HELL.

wouldn't change new super rankings because that series is dead, but wonder is easilyyyy better than these games, and I grew up with them
I actually grew up with NSMB2, I’m glad someone finally appreciates it. I’ve probably put more hours into coin rush than any other NSMB game, and it even sparked my love for speedrunning. In fact, it’s the first game I ever attempted to speedrun, I believe the fastest run I had was 36 minutes. Sure it’s nowhere near a fast time, but sure, why not.

@@choppiemcdonald As Silok said himself, the Wii game is best enjoyed when playing with other people, otherwise I'd approach the Wii version with a bit of caution if you plan to do a single player playthrough. It's still fun, but it's kinda empty at times.

3:30 Big reason the DS and Wii NSMB games sold so well is because they had install bases that were 150 million and 105 million respectively. Where as the 3DS had half that and the Wii U had 1/10th or even 1/15th of that on top of people being sick of the series

In the Australian version of NSMBW, the free-for-all mode was calĺed free play, I think that name fits a lot better

I grew up with these games, and while playing the retro games are fun I honestly love the new ones as they are my childhood
NSMB DS: was good for the time, tarnished by the follow ups
NSMB Wii: was basically the same thing but for a home console and with a few added gimmicks
NSMB U: basically the Wii one but in HD and with a new power up
Luigi U: actually brought something interesting to the series with the shorter and harder levels

Can I just say that this is one of the best videos on TH-cam and is made so well. I loved Super Mario Wii but also loved the idea of 100% super Mario bros 2 even tho I never did.
I played the Wii one when I was five and came back to it recently with friends...
