  • Why have a phone mount out in the open where it can become damaged, rained on... etc? Wouldn't it be better if you could leave your phone in your pocket?

    Great video, thanks. The vibrations from my bike have broken two cameras on my iPhone. I was searching for an alternative to mounting my phone to the bars to continue using navigation. think this is a perfect solution.

    Hi Michael, nice video, nice bike too... sounds great but does it have its own sat nav built in?...if you're still relying on cell phone signal for sat nav then the improvement is limited...?...thanks

    • @techguyMD
      @techguyMD  8 วันที่ผ่านมา

      No.. it's not built in.. It uses android auto or apple carplay. That said.. in both cases you can download offline maps for the area you are traveling in and not use the signal.. So if you are going to be in an area with no signal or spotty signal then simply connect to wifi with your phone, go to maps and download offline maps for that area. Then it won't need the cell signal to NAV. I hope that helps. And thanks!

    Interesting product, I typically keep phone in pocket and listen to the GPS. Two questions can you still use the helmet to helmet communicators and I wonder if I can use this on an insta360 x3 camera to start/stop camera and to see the video

    • @techguyMD
      @techguyMD  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes on the helmet to helmet coms.. Don't know about the Insta 360...
      Your phone still connects to your BT coms... and to the android auto/apple car play so when you use the GPS/android auto/Apple CP it's actually just using your phone for navigating maps, audio, calls texts etc.. I was considering a garmin motorcycle GPS.. But this is way better because it does everything.

      That is the exact same unit with 17 different names on it. It is nice to see a different box on yours. I spent no less than five hours, figuring mine out. The Bluetooth kept disconnecting from the unit to my phone. I ended up hardwiring it to the USB mini and it's been working perfect ever since hasn't dropped yet.

      I have a 2018 Goldwing that has Apple CarPlay built-in. That's it that's the only motorcycle that has it. I find this unit to be a game changer. I have a Ducati multi-Strada pikes peak and it uses Sygic. I would only use Sygic if I was in a dead zone where there's no cell phone reception because the maps are already downloaded into the phone and I could get myself out of a situation using that. but once I'm back in civilization, I would go right back to the Apple CarPlay unit. I love this thing.

      I don't use those.. but a quick google search shows me Gaia works with android auto and apple carplay so YES... that works.. Same with OSMAnd.. If it works with android auto and apple carplay, then it works on this device.

    Is there a way to use the Bike mode instead of the car mode on Google maps when using Android Auto on this device. I cant seem to find it!

  • @Mudslidex1
    @Mudslidex1 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I have the same one and I do love it except....The audio quality is degraded a lot when paired with my helmet. I have several different bluetooth helmet headsets and they all lose audio quality when going through the Android Auto device. Yet if I bypass the device and use just my phone to my headset, audio is back to being clear and loud. I even tried adjusting the audio settings in the Android Auto head unit and audio is still far inferior than if paired directly to my phone. Do you find this to be the case as well? Due to this, I have gone back to using my phone with Quadlock mount on the bars

    • @techguyMD
      @techguyMD  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Unusually it was good.. although a bit lower volume than paired directly... UNTIL this last weekend.. I went for a trip and it started sounding like crap.. Like really bad and distorted... I'll try it again.. but to answer your question yes.. it seems the audio quality and volume are not as good as when paired directly.

      @@techguyMD Thanks for the reply. It's really a shame because it's almost perfect if it wasnt for the audio issues. I would much rather use this than have my phone mounted, but I listen to music and take phone calls more than I use maps... So for now it's back to using just my phone. But if I'm going on a trip I would probably mount this again for maps

    I think these android auto and carplay retrofits will increase in popularity. How has yours been working so far? Any updates?
    I think one of these and a tank bag for the phone to stow and charge the phone will be ideal. Just need to make sure the phone has some airflow over it somehow or else it will probably overheat if using GPS while on the charger.

      @@techguyMD Interesting and good to know! I'm considering one of the newer 2020+ Africa Twin's for the built in android auto but maybe I should consider some other bikes too plus an android auto retrofit like this.

    • @kalimarus
      @kalimarus 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@rcvg69420 I have this on another bike and a 21 Africa Twin. The biggest difference with the twin has handlebar controls but this unit works well unless it has durability issues in the long run. It's wireless which is good and bad. With the Twin your cellphone is wired (very waterproof plug) which means it's always fully charged wherever you stop. With wireless the initial convenience of not plugging in the phone is nice but you have to charge it somehow. The Africa Twin is a great bike on its own regardless of CarPlay but it's one of the very few that has it built in. I'm glad we are seeing standalone products because CarPlay has so many good options for mapping, plus apps like on the way for weather.

      @@kalimarus Thanks for the reply! I actually ended up picking up a used 2019 R1250GS. The GS is just an epic bike and the deal was at the very top of my budget but still cheaper than what a 2020 or newer nice ATAS would have cost me. Plus I think the GS might be better for my use case anyways which is 99% street use.
      I picked up an Ottocast Lite C5 clone, I forget which one. It works without issues but I do need to get more familiar with using it still. Just not familiar with efficiently getting around the Android Auto interface yet.

    One more thing about strapping phones to your handlebars. I've ruined three cameras on my S 1000 XR. Wireless charging is really bad in the summer. It will overheat the phone. Also a bmw s1000xr owner here! I’ve used my iPhone in combination with a quadlock wireless charger for more than a year now without “issues”. Maybe placement on the handlebars matters for heat? So far I can’t beat the phone for navigation, Flitsmeister (app that alarms speed traps and more), and music. However it would have been cool to be able to use the controls on the handlebars for once.
