    The idea dosnt work well off road/ where gps coverage is poor-
    A phone connected to the web via mobile data uses the mob data to "help fill in the gaps" assisted by cell tower triangulation where gps locator is poor.Offline often there isnt enough signal.
    I ride a lot off road and in offline mode it often loses the route completely.
    I use avansi maps and a simple gps locator built into the map app to "re-find" my location which nearly always seems to work.
    i,m going to try some other apps to see if the google maps app is contributing to the problem.

      @@Motourev Cheers your welcome.Went riding off road today. Left data switched on from beginning of ride.Signal appeared to be a better.Still problems with "lost signal' but more manageable.Google maps problems for offroad use also include-
      1/Dreaded "re-route" that you didn,t notice(dangerous)
      2/Cant read screen esp.when planning route (blue/white)
      3/useful info such as village names etc vanish when zooming in.
      4/ Adding stop (waypoints) to prevent re-routes your route "vanishes" from the screen.You have to "re-find ' your last waypoint .Sometimes inexplicably map zooms out by itself.
      5/Lots of'clutter" on map such as irrelevant businesses, multiple languages e.g in Greece-Greek,English ,French ,German,Polish depending on the Nationality of the person who wrote the point on the map-ridiculous.I suppose google thinks it may make them more money but in the end map unreadable!!
      Patience required.Will get there in the end LoL

    Hi Moto,
    Really like the info you’ve provided.
    I’m after some advice please.
    I’m an old dinosaur biker ( not tech savvy at all )about to do my 1st solo motorcycle mini break , the Northumberland 250.
    I’ve been practicing with Google maps and have come across a problem that I can’t fix, I’m hoping you can point me in the right direction.
    The problem…..
    I put in my destination then add several stops, making sure the final destination is at the bottom but when I arrive at the 1st stop the navigation system asks me to press ‘continue’ and I really don’t want to stop every 6 miles or so having to take my gloves off to press ‘continue’
    Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
    Cheers Tony

    You can go a step further if You like, if you set your prime mobile as Hotspot WiFi and connect the "bike phone" to have the real time data about traffic and close roads etc. You can set the notifications also off to avoid the annoying interruptions.
    I actually set my "bike phone" as a "clone" of my prime phone in case anything happens to it, to put only my SIM to the "bike phone" and have everything available again as before. That requires of course an old phone with enough memory or a phone with expandable memory.

    Can you use this as a tracker in your car (in case the car is stolen)? If so, how do you connect an old iPhone 6 to a 6s? Thanks!

    I have a old Samsung A8 (not to old) and use the waterproof case similar to yours. My question is how to keep the screen from timing out when plugged in to bike power. I have gone into the settings and set to longest time out in displays but there is no "on all the time" setting? I understand you used an apple phone in vid but hope you have a trick or to two for this.

    Can you download the maps and turn on Airplane mode? Will that stop notifications coming through?

    • @Motourev
      @Motourev  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The idea is to use the phone with all cellular, 4G and WiFi turned off so no SIM card, you will not get any notification with no signal. The built in GPS signal will only talk to the map.

  • @BikerandBits
    @BikerandBits 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    OR...... just keep your good phone in your pocket & use it as a hotspot for the nav phone to use it’s signal, also you can’t download a whole country in one map, just in pieces so unless they blend together during use you will ride to the end of the map

    • @Motourev
      @Motourev  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No point in a hotspot because if you have no cellular signal then the hotspot is useless and your back to square one trying to download a map when you have no signal.
      The whole idea is to use the phone as a satnav where no cellular network is required so you don’t have to worry about losing a signal 🙈
      Yes I downloaded UK and France in the pieces which stitch together when travelling, you don’t have to load the maps individually you just need to download them and Google references them in the background, obviously not the entire globe but I download all of France so I can travel the whole of France with no cellular service.

    Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

    • @Motourev
      @Motourev  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You can do but you might as well just use the new phone if your after live updates. I was demonstrating you can still use Google maps even if there is no mobile signal in the area you might travel to.

    This is a very good idea but I could suggest two improvements.
    1: Use your personal phone, but use ‘Do not Disturb While Driving’ - this means no notifications will pop up until you turn your engine off.
    2: Put a SIM card in this with some data 3gb will do.
    Both of these will allow you to use the ‘online’ versions of Google Maps, which means you get real time updates for road closures, speed traps, obstacles, accidents and traffic information. I personally wouldn’t use google maps without being online.

    • @Motourev
      @Motourev  4 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Good ideas but still the SIM card is useless when no cellular network in remote areas, the gps version worked perfectly even in the welsh mountains. It’s just a spare phone I wanted to do something with instead of getting rid of it.

    • @MotoPavilion

      It is better not use your personal phone for one very simple but important reason. In case you fall down and you get separated from your bike your personal phone will be in your pocket and you still can call for help.
