I legitimately love Eisen's logic about fighting strong opponents. Strength, skill, etc. all matter, but anyone who's ever been in a real fight knows that moral and the psychology game are every bit as important. As shown with the dragon, Stark is literally gimping himself with his lack of self-confidence. He's stronger and more skilled than he realizes, and his negative self-image is basically a debuff until he gets over it. Persistence, determination, and sometimes downright crazy can throw off an opponent and start making them slip.
There’s something both alleviating and satisfying in that kind of development. Stark was sincerely only losing to Linie at first because he was too afraid to approach his Master’s moves. All it took was the realization of, "Wait. She’s a featherweight in a heavyweight’s match. Don't I win this in literally one hit?" And then it was just that easy. The only thing precluding him from winning this engagement in the first minute or two was that he thought he couldn't.
It also does not help that outside of his master, he never fought anyone. Imagine you are pupil of Saitama, but you never fought anyone but Saitama and he kept dominating you every time for 15 years. After that, you will not be thinking that by time you left him, you punch just as hard and gonna be pissing pants fighting.
I think it was John Carpenter that said that background music should stay in the background; good enough to accentuate and support the mood of the scene, but not be an overwhelming song that takes attention away from it. You are already being bombarded with this visually stunning scene, where the power of the characters are being revealed and even the little movements made tell a story (Fern's confidence, Stark overcoming his fear/lack of confidence). If the music was also a massive banger, you'd get pulled away from the scene that much more.. it's enough that it gets the blood pumping (and honestly, I felt it wasn't bad at all.. I might not listen to it on its own, but it does the scene justice). In my opinion, the fact that you can easily follow along with the song and know where it goes helps you focus on the visuals and narration; it is something a director actually takes into account when putting a scene together. On a side note, I love how precise Fern is.. she makes a little sidestep at 17:20 to avoid that attack coming, instead of jumping around or blasting it away... that slow walk and using only the barest of energy needed to avoid or block attacks, mimicking Frieren's combat with Aura we just saw (big axe and sword landing right in front of her), and implies a high level of confidence in ability. A sign that the demons are missing in this fight.
I'm confused, how could there be a more appropriate soundtrack for this anime? Hell, what other anime even dares going to those roots? Most "fantasy" anime (mostly isekai, let's be real) will run to some high tempo stuff for battles.
Sure plenty of people have died in the series but for the most part the cause of death was old age. Death has a specific meaning and isn’t used simply to pull at heartstrings as a gimmick
Personally I think it is a bit generic, since it ain't nothing new, but it is done that way so as to give that good ol fantasy vibe. Plus generic don't mean it ain't good as I enjoyed the hell out of it.
I mean, it's a good old fashioned Germanic-influenced song that follows a relatively simple chromatic scale. It makes it easy to follow and hum along with, which makes it catchy and memorable. Alicia just makes the mistake of seeing this as a drawback when it's really a sign in the song's favor.
Yea, More complexity doesn't automatically mean something is better. There are actually several cool scenes/intros/ whatever that I can't enjoy because the music is so complex that it's just noise to me.
Eisen's strength borders on a gag. One reflexive punch from him knocked Stark, the man capable of winning a 1v1 with a dragon, through a wall and a bunch of trees. At the time it was shown, the scene lends itself to showing how helpless Stark is, but after seeing what he's actually capable of, it's more of a testament to how strong Eisen is.

I'll entertain the idea at least then. What kind of music would you think fits the best for a high fantasy, RPG-esque show then? And while were at it, how original of an OST are we trying to reach here? A new genre? The OST is an original piece because it's not a copy of another existing music. I think she wanted an original genre like turbo death metal squeef funk, because heaven forbid you can hum along to a song the first time listening to it haha.
When Frieren referrs to 'Humanity's magic' her magic is included in that. There are three classifications of magic: Humanity's magic: Originated with the elves and was taught to humans (though it was some time before it was officially accepted and human users were not persecuted by other humans) Demonic magic: Magic used by demons exclusively. I must respectfully disagree with your opinion about the soundtrack. Not only did they use instruments which would actually exist in a fantasy world - and how many times of late have any of these soundtrack composers actually done that? - but they created music which matches the scenes perfectly. Yes, it has a clear rhythm which, a few minutes into hearing it for the third time (which, this *is* only the *third* time in *nine* episodes), one can amateurishly go "ahhh" with in rough coincidence with the track, but, seriously, doesn't that just mean it's, you know, catchy? One doesn't need an overly complicated orchestral symphony with electric guitars to convey the mood and hype up the action. This isn't an anime about fighting or superpowers, it's a folk legend that the people of that world will tell for generations. So, in my opinion, the soundtrack is not just good, it is masterful.
I disagree with you as well. It is EXTREMELY common for unusual instruments to be made or used within a piece. I have done music breakdowns on this channel if you want a more indepth explanation.

I've watched most of the videos she has uploaded on TH-cam and never once noticed her miss something relevant to the plot of the show she's watching. I have trouble believing her goal was to cut out that part so viewers would need to go to Pateron to actually watch it since her final thoughts are Pateron exclusive.

I think you underestimate Stark a bit, just like Stark underestimates himself. Stark is strong, incredibly so, he took out a whole dragon by himself in 30 seconds. The fight with Linie he was on the defensive. Once he gets some confidence I think he'll be hard to hit.
While I do think the OST is a bit generic. I don't think you need to be unique to be good. I personally don't think any other music would have fit this anime better. This anime itself is a high fantasy story like any other. So putting some other type of music might take away from the vibe. Evan Call did a good job IMO. Something otherworldly like Made in Abyss is a fantasy that needed a very unique soundtrack, because it fits the atmosphere. This tho, your usual fantasy vibe is perfect. At least, that's how I feel about it. So yeah. I don't think Frieren is one of the better anime titles this year. This is one of the better anime titles, full-stop. Hard to come by this type of quality in an anime seemingly come out of nowhere (at least for those who don't read much manga like me). Anime is saturated with fantasy and isekai yet somehow this anime feels fresh just be doing everything right.
As a musician I feel deeply offended, celtic vibe fits the anime theme PERFECTLY. But at least I can sleep soundly now that I know Alicia is not perfect too xD
This episode, from how Fern and Stark fight, how the demons ( especially Linnie, or whataver her name is ) move, the music working so fluidly with the action, this is how i imagine dnd battles for my players, this is why i describe the action as it should be not just " you shoot arrow " and throw in music to set the mood, Frieren paints a picture in your soul
Please put some damn respect on my boy Stark: dragon-kun leaved the town alone cause he was scared of him. Thats not a puny baby demon who will end him...
If you want fancy music, you should go seek it out. But if you make music for tv, it has to complement the scenes and the overall feel of the show. Just look at the intro which already got heavily criticized for beeing to upbeat and "modern"/unfit for the tone despite having tge perfect lyrics. The OST for this fight fits and brings the right feel across perfectly. Thats all it has to and all its supposed to do!
She was cute... and despicable. Good riddance. I especially liked her expression after he sliced her in two. It wasn't horror. It was utter disbelief. Disbelief that this "human" had bested her. Absolutely delicious and well deserved. Nice job Stark.
Just realized watching your react video why I like Stark killing blow so much. The animator 'skipped a frame' to make it impactful. It goes from overhead position to pure light of downward strike right away. The director of the Raid and Raid 2 : Berandal use that trick a lot to sell impact of hits in fights.
The battle theme is amazing, even 11 months later I feel compelled to comment over that. Being able to sing along doesn’t mean it’s generic that means it’s catchy and memorable. She’d heard the song at least once before in I think episode 3 or 4 but had just forgotten
Got something against irish step dancing music? The beauty of this style of music is in the subtle differences. But then again, art is subjective, so you do you.
14:00 Lügner: "I'm so certain that I've defeated this child that I'm going to completely ignore her while I consider the greater plan. It's not like she's been trained to fight demons and might just be playing possum, it's perfectly safe to turn my back on her." Fern: "The idiot didn't even secure my staff! It's right there, well within magical grabbing range!"
Overcomplicating things doesn't always mean making them better. Bleach's ost are considered as some of the best in anime, while being quite simple. That's because they give to the majority of the audience what they want from an ost : it goes well with the scene, and the melody itself is catchy, or stays in mind. The more these 2 aspects are there, the more the ost is appreciated. And that's not easy at all to do. In the end, taste in music is subjective, but I have to say that this ost that you you criticized here, "zoltraak", is pretty much universally loved by the audience. Tons of cover on ytb, and most listened ost from the show atm. I also saw a lot of musicians praising it, so I'd say that it might be quite well composed. On a personal lvl, I didn't feel that it was that generic, and I think I watched enough anime to say it. It's true that it has this european/medieval vibe, that we often get from ost in fantasy shows, but it stands out with the classical guitar. Also, you compare it with a pub music, maybe you know pub music well, but it'd be more appropriate to compare it with music from the same medium if you want to say that it's generic. Because it doesn't make any sense to compare it to something where you find the music in question. Give me an electric guitar, I'll say that I always hear that in rock. Give me a choir, I'll say that I always hear that in church. You see?But even so, it's still not a valid criticism for an ost imo. Being original is not the goal. Sawano just did dark aria, the song in solo leveling ep 6, and everyone is praising it, but tbh, sawano already did hundreds of songs that sounds really close. That's his style, but it still works, because the audience doesn't want variety, they just want the ost to be good independantly. And I think that zoltraak is a very good ost in itself, and I really like the melody. Same for most of the audience. I think that if your first reaction when you hear it is "it's not original", it's just that you don't really like it that much in the first place.
I love the soundtrack but I also love that style of music. I'm going to listen to that kind of old school music before I listen to anything modern. I absolutely love celtic folk music. Hate most modern music besides rock and some metal.
There is a Celtic music studio in Japan, a lot of fantasy anime have been utilizing them. Mostly one shot little things, but there are anime, like Frieren and Farming Life in Another World, that use them exclusively. The reason it basically sounds the same is Celtic music plays their instruments in unison instead of in harmony, so you get pretty similar sounds as there are like 5 or 6 instruments including vocals used in Celtic music. What can I say, Celtic folk are as basic now as we were back then. Our music will hype the fuck out of a room though.
Can't think of anything clever to say so I'll just say, the animation in this episode was great, it got me to pause and go frame by frame at some points just to appreciate it
Yeah i don't think generic was the right word, or because she framed it as it was a bad thing. Wich it isn't. it fit perfectly for the anime and the action scene. So nah i respectfully disagree, they didn't drop the ball on the OST at all. It's an L take from her. Good music isn't something that is always complicated or must be always something new.
And that, everyone, is what everyone was waiting for (with the next episode that she has already watched since she talks about it in another video). We were so sure that you would be delighted and excited for this fight. Fern's stoicism makes her way of fighting even more impressive in my opinion, because she doesn't seem worried or in difficulty for even a minute. Now, was it Frieren's stoicism that rubbed off on her, or would she have naturally grown up like that. In comparison, Stark continually seems on the verge of losing, but is always ready to get back up. Two opposites, and you know what they say about opposites lol.
So, what other genre would you have proposed the ost be for a fantasy battle scene, then? Metal? EDM? Dubstep? Fucking rap? None of those would have fit the scene or the tone of the story.
If I can suggest an anime to you, I recommend: summoned to another world for a second time, the protagonist who managed to return to his world returns to the world in which he was summoned
I could be wrong but i dont think demons get stronger the way normal monsters in other animes do. The number of humans they eat doesnt mean more power, its just their food source like a cow eats grass. They have to get stronger the same way humans do they just start with more base mana and live 10x longer They also dont want to kill all of the humans because they want to take over the town and probably enslave the humans to work for them. Also the demons are prideful and getting surprised and damaged the way Fern did them means they need the salty runback immediately lol
A lot of anime i watched had so things happened ib their OSTs that i could not understand a thing. Calling this OSTs generic might not be wrong, but saying its a bad thing i will fight you

Weird that they skipped the dialogue that explained why Fern felt escaping was the right plan last episode and Fern gasping at Stark being brave.
They didn't skip, Alicia skip parts because this is not a way for you to watch the anime, it's just a way to watch her reactions
Indeed, although it's still weird because she kept reacting like they had no reason for doing so, when that clearly wasn't the case. Oh well, whatever
@@LucasF25 she probably acknowledges it in her patreon. That's her way to charge for a full reaction instead of an edited/cut one
@@brunoverasferreira6263 I don't get what you mean by Alicia skipped this? I'm talking about her editor when I said they.
I've watched most of the videos she has uploaded on TH-cam and never once noticed her miss something relevant to the plot of the show she's watching. I have trouble believing her goal was to cut out that part so viewers would need to go to Pateron to actually watch it since her final thoughts are Pateron exclusive.
@@byrondejong9872 I see. I'm sorry most veteran of veterans, knower of all her wills and thoughts. I was just bringing attention about this not being the first time she skipped, and not the first time she missed something others would think is relevant. This does not mean I am doubting your authority in alicia-related topics, it just means what it means.
I think you underestimate Stark a bit, just like Stark underestimates himself. Stark is strong, incredibly so, he took out a whole dragon by himself in 30 seconds. The fight with Linie he was on the defensive. Once he gets some confidence I think he'll be hard to hit.
An Irish bar has the best battle theme. That's where all the fights start
Generic? Really? How often do you hear music like this as battle theme in anime?
Calling the chordprogression generic and singing along with the wrong chords hits different😂😂
As a musician I feel deeply offended, celtic vibe fits the anime theme PERFECTLY. But at least I can sleep soundly now that I know Alicia is not perfect too xD
10:30 hey leave my man alone, he has awesome fightscenes 😭💀
This episode, from how Fern and Stark fight, how the demons ( especially Linnie, or whataver her name is ) move, the music working so fluidly with the action, this is how i imagine dnd battles for my players, this is why i describe the action as it should be not just " you shoot arrow " and throw in music to set the mood, Frieren paints a picture in your soul
18:50 O hell nahhhhhhhhh we do not appreciate shots fired at the Goat himself Evan Call like that
Not the Zoltraak (the soundtrack) slander 😭
Alicia stopping just short of saying something like, "you know, Himmel was not all that handsome."
@@Egavans 😱 Even saying such a thing in _jest_ is tantamount to _blasphemy!_ lol
Need to get her to watch Violet Evergarden to fully appreciate the GOAT himself
That and the Frieren OST are currently my daily background music.
They could have been going for a Celtic type music to fit the fantasy theme of which most fantasy esc stuff is based off now a days
When Aura calls her "Sousou Frieren" I think a better translation would be "Frieren the Undertaker" Literally it means "Funeral Frieren"
"So long as you have big 'ORA' energy, you can beat her ass"
damn right
Please put some damn respect on my boy Stark: dragon-kun leaved the town alone cause he was scared of him. Thats not a puny baby demon who will end him...
Stark's strike was so fast it became a hitscan
Linie would have been better off using any other moves, Eisen’s was the only one Shark has practiced against.
How is she expecting stark to die in his first official fight?
If you want fancy music, you should go seek it out.
But if you make music for tv, it has to complement the scenes and the overall feel of the show.
Just look at the intro which already got heavily criticized for beeing to upbeat and "modern"/unfit for the tone despite having tge perfect lyrics.
The OST for this fight fits and brings the right feel across perfectly.
Thats all it has to and all its supposed to do!
Alicia was right, this ep made me care about a character and then made me watch her die. Linie, you were too good for this world
She was cute... and despicable.
It's not like she's been trained to fight demons and might just be playing possum, it's perfectly safe to turn my back on her."
Fern: "The idiot didn't even secure my staff! It's right there, well within magical grabbing range!"
Trying to be so different with that soundtrack take its insane
Very disappointed by the music / ost take. Zoltraak is one of the best anime tracks i have heard in years, only short of Kevin Penkins work.
21:35 remember, Baki's strat' is always the best strat'
Eisen is following the Red Riot style of fighting, just be tougher.
sturk never once attack the demon girl when they were fighting he was like when he traind with Eisen.
How tf is Zoltraak by Evan Call generic ☠☠
The instrumental is just finee☠️
Can't think of anything clever to say so I'll just say, the animation in this episode was great, it got me to pause and go frame by frame at some points just to appreciate it
Why does everyone seem to think Stark is sad till he turns up? Like Aura is a great mage don’t get me wrong, but people stay sleeping on Stark.
Waiting for new episodes like it's a graduation party
He gets knocked down, but he gets up again, 'cause they're never gonna keep him down.
eisen: "stark, remember the warrior mantra: UNGA BUNGA"
I will fight you on music, this is Evan Call the best composer
The secret technique of Strength builds: Poise trading.
So, what other genre would you have proposed the ost be for a fantasy battle scene, then? Metal? EDM? Dubstep? Fucking rap? None of those would have fit the scene or the tone of the story.
Alicia, I'm with you on most takes, but I'm gonna have to disagree on the OST. It's fantastic, in every sense of the word
The music fits the scene perfectly tho
If I can suggest an anime to you, I recommend: summoned to another world for a second time, the protagonist who managed to return to his world returns to the world in which he was summoned
I could be wrong but i dont think demons get stronger the way normal monsters in other animes do. The number of humans they eat doesnt mean more power, its just their food source like a cow eats grass. They have to get stronger the same way humans do they just start with more base mana and live 10x longer
They also dont want to kill all of the humans because they want to take over the town and probably enslave the humans to work for them. Also the demons are prideful and getting surprised and damaged the way Fern did them means they need the salty runback immediately lol
Isn't the absense of cliffhangers refreshing? Stark just needed to get out of his own way.
Mann im glad im not the only one who losin my mind over the animation of stark putting on his jacket XD
9:31 should be transale error, father in japan similar with uncle or old guy
I dont mind the ost at all. In fact i really like it because it fits. It sounds how actual medieval music would sound.
I shan't listen to more of this Evan Call slander m'am
15:53 While this is a series (hell, an episode) full of great lines, this one is one of my personal favorites.
Stark isn’t weak but he’s such a coward he sees other enemies as stronger than him, he’s weak of heart sometimes you could say
Well, I did say you'd cry every episode, but I didn't say it'd always be a sad cry. But you will cry every episode.
The Rocky mentality. Just keep getting up.
A lot of anime i watched had so things happened ib their OSTs that i could not understand a thing. Calling this OSTs generic might not be wrong, but saying its a bad thing i will fight you
Can't wait for her to see next episode.
wow you have no faith in stark
Of the few episodes where the ending theme "are you alright" hits different
I love the reaction , but i will fight that soundtrack take , all in good fate tho good vid alicia 😊
Love this review. Hope you do Dead Mount Death Play some time.
What is wrong with old germanic music ? 7th century was the best. Of course it was generic , since the time Fulda Cloisters existed
