In the comics, Big Hero 6 is essentially Japan’s answer to The Avengers, serving as the nation’s premier superhero team. The group was developed by the Japanese government to address threats within their borders, blending cutting-edge technology with superhuman abilities. Notably, Silver Samurai, an iconic mutant with strong ties to Wolverine, served as the team’s field leader. Interestingly, Big Hero 6 was originally set to debut in a volume of Alpha Flight, but due to scheduling conflicts, they instead made their first appearance in Sunfire and Big Hero 6 #1 (1998). Similarly, Alpha Flight is Canada’s counterpart to The Avengers, serving as the nation’s government-backed superhero team. Both Alpha Flight and Big Hero 6 were heavily inspired by the formation of The Avengers, who, in turn, were influenced by the groundbreaking success of the Fantastic Four. As Marvel’s first superhero team, the Fantastic Four kick-started the Age of Heroes, an era when superheroes began to emerge in large numbers, and laid the foundation for the Marvel Universe as we know it today. In the MCU, you haven’t seen the Fantastic Four yet because Marvel didn’t have the movie rights to them, as was also the case with the X-Men, and by extension, Alpha Flight, due to their close ties to the X-Men. However, as of 2024, Fantastic Four: First Steps (2025) will finally introduce Marvel’s First Family to the MCU next year. In an ideal world, we might have seen the Fantastic Four during Phase 1 of the MCU if they had the rights. Marvel could have started the MCU with the Fantastic Four, followed by the X-Men, which might have shifted the early focus away from The Avengers. In a way, Marvel being limited in which characters they could use turned out to be a blessing for the Avengers, as it allowed them to take center stage and establish themselves as the cornerstone of the MCU. If you’re looking for an amazing Fantastic Four-style movie in the meantime, I highly recommend The Incredibles (2004). It’s heavily inspired by the Fantastic Four and Marvel comics from the 1960s and 1970s, perfectly capturing the spirit of a superhero family while celebrating the storytelling and aesthetic of that era. Interestingly, Michael Giacchino, who composed the iconic score for The Incredibles, is also composing the music for Fantastic Four: First Steps. The theme has already been revealed, and it’s nothing short of amazing.
Big Hero 6 was also Marvel's answer to the rise of Manga in the west. Manga was becoming super popular in America and Marvel decided to make a couple of series that were manga inspired, at least in art style, Big Hero 6 and the other was The Runaways. The latter of which is my favorite as it's a group of kids who are the kids of villains and they runaway in order to stop their villainous parents. It even got a tv show! In my honest opinion, both the comics and the tv show are really good.
Yeah...after the success of wreck it Ralph and it's twist villain disney spent a good few years making twist villains in every single movie. Big hero 6, frozen, coco, and more.
One very minor detail that always amused me about this film: They always get excited for the wrong aspects of their inventions. Sure Baymax is a miracle of engineering and programming, but the scanner he uses to analyse Hiro at the start is world-changing. Just imagine the sheer resolution and accuracy required to identify an allergy at a glance, what marvels of micro and chemical engineering could you accomplish with such a device? Then there are the microbots, sure they're pretty cool, but that neurotransmitter? My god, imagine what you could achieve with it. All kinds of software engineering and graphics design could be achieved in a matter of minutes what normally takes weeks. Microbots are a good start but you could also have full fledged robotics accurately controlled remotely with that thing. and nobody seems to care.
Elon Musk: _throws billions at NeuraLink, mostly kills a few monkeys_ This guy: "Yeah I developed the perfect brain-computer interface so obviously the next logical step was putting on a kabuki mask and go supervillain on the city." Wait, now that I think about it... is he a relative of Doc Ock? Same mindset 😅.
Something kinda cute that relates to this movie, when my first son was about to be born, my wife requested an epidural. The nurses came in, administered the epidural, but they had apparently customized the machine, because the noise it played to indicate that it was done was Baymax's "balalala" sound.
This is technically based on marvel characters, but the film reinvented the lore so it stands on its own without any known Marvel heroes or villains coexisting. Like San Francisco being renamed as San Fansokyo after an earthquake in 1906 with the help of Japanese immigrants.
The most powerful moment and possibly my favorite scene is "Baymax, destroy.". That moment right there had my heart sank, like, I really felt for the boy. Imagine having that said in your face, and the result? The kid's entire grief, sadness, depression, all combined and transformed into pure hatred, and it was made manifest in Baymax. If it wasn't for his friends, Baymax would've killed the guy. I especially love the part where Baymax just wrecks pillars going straight to Callaghan. As a kid, I was terrified of Baymax at that moment.
That scene with baymax going killer mode is so powerful and well done. Like they actually made the kind, Healthcare bot seem so intimidating and terrifying.
What's amazing is that if you look closely at Go Go Tamago's super hero outfit and remember that it was designed by a 14 year old you'll realize that Baymax's initial diagnosis of "puberty" was in fact correct.
17:33 The name of the city in the movie is called "San Fransokyo", and from what I recall the backstory is sort of an alternate history where a massive wave of Japanese immigrants moved to San Francisco at some point in the past and heavily influenced the city's cultural identity over time. Much like in the American translation of the "Ace Attorney" games.
Two things about Callahan. As harsh as it is, when he said “that was HIS mistake” when Hiro said Tadashi went back in to save him…he wasn’t wrong. It WAS a mistake to haphazardly run into a burning building, instead of waiting for people who are actually trained and equipped to deal with situations like that. It’s just how Callahan worded it that was wrong. Second, and I’m certain this is apparent to some but I want to say it anyway, Callahan was so focused on revenge that he never even considered the possibility that his daughter might still be alive. He could have done all this; stealing the tech, reassemble the portal, all to venture into the other dimension to save his daughter. But no…
@@johnsantos507 "Letting" him? I doubt he even knew Tadashi was in there until after it happened. He would have assumed that everyone evacuated. It's not his fault someone went back in.
@ Ah yes, well spotted. Callahan COULD HAVE saved Tadashi, but was so concerned with his own preservation so he could I act his revenge, he didn’t think for a second that someone might come looking for him…
I must have watched this movie at least 20 times right after it came out, and I had no idea that Baymax talked until recently. I worked at a video rental store and because Big Hero 6 was a popular family friendly movie, we played it on the TV in the store on repeat for weeks, but with no sound on. Because Baymax doesn’t have a mouth that moves, and his movements are so expressive, I just assumed he was a silent character. When I watched a reaction video to Big Hero 6 a couple of months ago, my mind was blown.
17:19 San Francisco if it was also Tokyo. It explains the layout having no rhyme or reason, since one of the cities has a 6-way stop-signed intersection.
Leaving the theater with my little cousin, I asked her what was her favorite part of the movie and she gleefully declared “THE FIRE!” The way she said that, you’d think she wanted to roast marshmallows over it.
Back when this particular era of Disney movies was coming out, a lot of animation fans were gushing over how the company was challenging itself to do basically everything that was supposed to be impossible for 3D CGI. It's kinda funny that for Big Hero 6, it was "the fire and explosions", because, yes, they are very impressively rendered, but they have nowhere near as much presence in the film as the hair in Tangled, the ice in Frozen, the water in Moana, or the fur in Zootopia.
It is funny how FRED gets basically a "DRAGON" suit, when his VA, TJ MILLER, also voices TUFFNUT (the Brother or the the two blond twins, the other being RUFFNUT ) in How to train your Dragon. :D
the city in Big Hero 6 is a mix of Tokyo and San Francisco because it takes place in an alternate reality where there was peace between Japan and the US and they combined cultures, or something like that
If I remember correctly in universe after a major earthquake caused San Francisco to be in ruins(it could be the earthquake of 1906 I don’t remember) basically Japan helped with the reconstruction which led to a major Japanese influence in the area. At least i think that’s the in universe lore
Big Hero 6 was created by Man of Action for Marvel, same people who created the Ben 10 franchise. Although the film completely reinvents the characters and lore, like didn’t have a brother and Baymax was a mech Hiro made based on his dad’s brainwaves. Wasabi was actually Asian and Fred could create a Godzilla-like Stand. Honey Lemon had a bag that’s bigger on the inside.
I loved Ben 10 growing up. Still do, with Alien Force and Ultimate Alien, and eventually, his crossover with another Man of Action show I was introduced to, Generator Rex.
this movie was the best movie adaptation of the comic but in the original comic Hiro's Dad was the one who died (Hiro is an only child) and the robot known as Baymax turned into a Dragon whenever he got angry
Alice, if you're curious to know, they made a TV show based on the movie, and it's a continuation. Also, this movie is technically Marvel since Big Hero 6 was originally a Marvel comic book. Oh, I almost forgot, Marshmallow!
Ah yes, this film holds a very special place in my heart. About two years before it was released, a cousin of mine passed away. We were very close growing up and he was basically the big brother I never had (and I’m an only child, so it really meant a lot having a brotherly bond). He taught me how to be self confident and to always believe in myself. When I got the news that he suddenly died, it seriously hit me hard. So I know exactly what Hiro was going through in this movie.
like i get the complaints ppl have about this movie with the obvious reveal, but the world, powers, personalities, and aesthetics of this movie will make it one of my all-time favorites
Your instincts served you well, Alicia. You picked up on both Callaghan and Krei being shady, albeit for different reasons. And you were right on the money about Callaghan setting the fire so he could steal the micro-bots. Also, the combination of San Francisco with Japanese elements really makes for a gorgeous city. I really appreciate how much you're picking up on and appreciating the nuances in this movie, Alicia. Thank you for sharing this reaction video with us, I thoroughly enjoyed being able to watch you enjoy one of my favorite animated movies alongside WALL-E. 😄
Speaking of crimminally underrated animated movies, you gotta watch Transformers One! It is PHENOMENAL! It's the first movie in a while that made me audiably gasp in the climax. You know exactly how the story has to go bc this is a Transformers movie and it still hits you like a ton of bricks. The story is so good it legit made me cry over animated robot people...
I dunno if you can find this There is a Big Hero 6 the animated series that is a continuation to the movie, almost all main cast reprises their role except fred and Wasabi, also they explore some aspect left in the end credits, also there is a full cgi Baymax solo series recently concluded
3:42 ok but can we talk about how the film gets away with doing the same exposition dump twice in a row. Tadashi does the exact same thing when rescuing Hiro. Beat for beat. He starts with: "Are you okay? Are you hurt? THEN WHAT WERE YOU THINKING?" Followed by him dumping exposition about Hiro's upbringing.
Hey Alicia, I just want you to know I really appreciate the content you create. I have a hard time with joy/happiness and when I think about the times when I first experienced something-especially good movies-that revitalizes me. When I watch your content and see your reactions, the energy you bring reminds me of my own when I first experienced them. So thank you; thank you for helping me feel better, and reminding me of better times.

I remember when the first trailer came out I wasn’t convinced but the next few seemed promising and enough to convince me to watch it in theaters and and It earned a spot in my top of favorite animated movies. It also got a sequel series (I personally liked it, at least seasons 1 and 2) Marshmallow
I loved this movie from start to finish, i want to get my hands on the comics, and baymax, looking like a big marshmallow, makes him look so adorable. Tadashis death always hits hard, i never expected him to be permanently gone.
The animation in this movie is incredible. They even animated all of the characters breathing! Well, except for Tadashi. They stopped animating his breathing about half way through.
This movie was my absolute favorite as a kid! As fun as it is to clown on "that was his mistake," all in all it's still a great movie. Also really glad you caught the post credit scene Marshmallow!
First off- Marshmellow It’s getting to the point now where you will have to go to Disneyland. It has a Marvel land, a Star Wars land, and a Big Hero 6 land.
Just remember that Baymax’s voice actor also voices Clay Puppington from Moral Orel. By the way Alicia, have you ever seen Moral Orel? You should watch it.
YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAS! oh good lord the movie was one of my favorite movies for a Long ass time only being beaten by Wall-E [Now that understand the beauty] and now Wild robot [BEAUTIFUL FAMILY MOVIE ALMOST MADE ME CRY THROUGHOUT IT!] i remember watching the entrie goddamn tv series which disappointedly got cancelled WAY TOO GODDAMN SOON and had to lower quality to wrap up stories but still i love it with all my heart literally if I didnt get spoiled I WOULD'VE BOUGHT KINGDOM HEARTS JUST FOR THE BIG HERO SIX SECTION! and i even saw the Baymax! Series which although controversial was a nice series about growing up and was sweet I LOVE THE BIG MARSHMALLOW AND WILL FOREVER WISH FOR MERCHANDISE AND REFERENCES OF HIM FOR YEARS TO COME! [sorry for the rant and typing all of the stuff you won't read but to the reader that does see this have a good day and I hope this movie scaled to expectations helped satisfy your care for such cinema] [R.I.P Tadashi Hamada]
This might have been one of my favorite films when it first came out. It was such a fun creative experience. You know, Big Hero 6 has a animated series that continues afterwards from the movie. It's a really good series, but if you decide to watch it, I would personally advised to skip season 3. They made a lot of changes to the formula and honestly not much happens during that time in terms of story
So about the fire. If you think about it, Callahan had no reason to set the fire to steal the microbots. A) He could just ask to look at one since he is their professor, or b) he invented the techology used to build them, so he could have just built them himself. What I, and a lot of other people kind of agree on is that Krei set the fire because he was mad at Hiro so that it would destroy his work. Not sure what that would acomplish, but he's a self entitled billionaire so he does what he wants and gets away with it. So, since Callahan is know in a burning building, he uses the microbots to protect himself, at which point he realizes that they can help him get back at Krei for taking his daughter from him.
Well, the city this movie is taking place in is called San Fransokyo. It was meant to blend the cultural differences, and strengths, of both Japan and the U.S. From Structures to Media. That's why the City looks like a blend of San Francisco and Tokyo and the animation appears to be a blend of Anime and Disney, among other things. Apparently BH6 is loosely based off of a Marvel comic series of the same name. You should also keep in mind that this movie was structured for a younger audience in mind. Where they don't have enough life experience to tell who may be the bad guy half way through the movie. So, realistically, the narrative makes sense when you take into account that it's written with Teenagers (and younger) in mind.
One thing I appreciate about the series that followed this movie, Callaghan never returns as a villain. We see him again in prison, and Hiro never really forgives him for what happened to Tadashi, but they never contrive a reason for him go back to being a bad guy.
The statue that was shot during the training montage was hans from frozen. There’s also the ship from frozen as well during the first flight scene when flying over the harbor
Literally my main flaw with this movie is the villain. Yeah, he makes sense thematically as a dark mirror of Hiro, someone who just couldn't process their grief in a healthy way. But his turn from a seemingly kind & wise mentor figure to a cold-blooded psycho is a *little* jarring Maybe if we had spent more time with him or we got some hints that he obviously has a dark side, it could have worked.
I feel that Disney really wanted to subvert audience expectations with the twist. However, it just feels unrealistic when you think about it a little bit.
Fun story, when my sister celebrated her 30th birthday she and her boyfriend had the theme ''I think I'm in the wrong place'' telling every one that the one with the best costume/reson on why they are in the wrong place would get a price. So I decided to go as Baymax, color me supriced when I walk in and find out that it was a wedding, yes my sister and her boyfriend was getting married right there, and boy was her (now Ex-husband) angry with me for being dressed as Baymax. I most give points to the priest, he keep being deadpann and neutral trough out the reception.
I stand by this is one of the best Disney/Pixar film. I've never been hit so hard by a movie for children. I cried watching it as a kid, I cry watching it as an adult, I'm gonna cry watching it in 20 years. This movie has permanently altered my soul and personality. Its also the movie that got me into Fall Out Boy, so do with that what you will.
"he hasn't had the opportunity to experience something that makes him realize his intellect doesn't make him immortal." Kind of a funny choice of words considering the song used as the theme for this movie. Also, its a travesty we didn't get a sequel for this. We did get 2 series set afterwards. One is a continuation, but doesn't exactly have the same vibe as the movie. The other series is about Baymax being a nurse in San Fransokyo. That being said, I recommend looking up the Kingdom Hearts 3 Big Hero 6 cutscenes. It has a big vibe for what a sequel could have been.
First: Big Hero 6 was fantastic. Baymax had an immense effect on how people talked at my college for years. Second: If you're looking for more of a "brother movie," I *HIGHLY* recommend Onward.
A small thing i have to say in defense of Krai. When the experiment problem came up he said it was within the parameters. It makes sense he would want to go ahead with the experiment. If the parameters were in dangerous territory it was the fault of the scientists calculating them.
6:25 Holy hell I am like this with dishes, Plates go in the plate area and cups go in the cup area, Plastics and ceramics on seperate shelves dad god damn it!
Thanks for reacting to this movie, Big Hero 6 is one of my all time favorite Disney movies in recent years. Hiro, Baymax and Gogo were my favorite characters. I just wished this movie gets a sequel. They did make a Big Hero 6 series it was pretty good.
Okay so the Big Hero 6 is set in the fictional city of San Fransokyo which is an Eastern-Western blend of aesthetics and culture covering a fairly extensive region on the coast of the Pacific Ocean. Basically following the Great Catastrophe of 1906, in which scientist Lenore Shimamoto caused a massive earthquake when she attempted to invent a new form of unlimited energy that backfired, (this was actually based on a real Earth Quake event that struck San Francisco in 1906) Japanese immigrants helped rebuild by contributing key Japanese building techniques that allowed the city to flourish and prevail in the face of the seismic events like never before. Following this restitution, San Francisco was renamed San Fransokyo in honor and recognition of it being a city reborn thanks to a combination of Japanese and American architecture, landscaping and engineering skills.
Hot take but i don't hate Krei. Everyone likes to talk about how its his fault Abagail "died" but the tech literally drew his attending to the anomalous readings, he looked at it and determined it was within acceptable range. He didn't just brush it off. He did his job. There were safety measures in place and its experimental tech. She agreed to be a test subject and knew realistically it was a possibility. Hes no more a bad guy than the universe itself in my mind. Callahan is bitter and jaded which is understandable given its his daughter but his anger i think was misdirected

Didn't know *that* music tidbit. Thanks!
I love media

BG6: EMO-SHUN-AL DAMAGE
This movie is a complete masterpiece!

Excelsior!
Something kinda cute that relates to this movie, when my first son was about to be born, my wife requested an epidural. The nurses came in, administered the epidural, but they had apparently customized the machine, because the noise it played to indicate that it was done was Baymax's "balalala" sound.
I wouldn't be the slightest bit mad.
@@GarrettJayChristian Yeah, while my wife's not very familiar with the movie, she thought it was funny too.
dose Alicia realise that there is a whole wholesome series about baymax, just being a doctor/ therapist to random strangers everywhere?
I saw it. It’s adorable
The cartoon series was pretty fun too
This is technically based on marvel characters, but the film reinvented the lore so it stands on its own without any known Marvel heroes or villains coexisting.
For me it's easily when he can't help it and screams "Tadashi's gone!" when hitting Baymax's chest.
That scene with baymax going killer mode is so powerful and well done. Like they actually made the kind, Healthcare bot seem so intimidating and terrifying.
What's amazing is that if you look closely at Go Go Tamago's super hero outfit and remember that it was designed by a 14 year old you'll realize that Baymax's initial diagnosis of "puberty" was in fact correct.
lol
The outfit isn't THAT horny.
I don't know how closely we need to look lol
Devils advocate though, skin tight is more aerodynamic and shes about speed and maneuvering
pretty sure they all designed their own suits and Hiro just helped them work it out and help integrate their "powers" into it
17:33 The name of the city in the movie is called "San Fransokyo", and from what I recall the backstory is sort of an alternate history where a massive wave of Japanese immigrants moved to San Francisco at some point in the past and heavily influenced the city's cultural identity over time. Much like in the American translation of the "Ace Attorney" games.
Japanifornia
But no…
There's a 3rd one you miss. Letting Tadashi died was Callaghan's mistake.
@@johnsantos507 "Letting" him? I doubt he even knew Tadashi was in there until after it happened. He would have assumed that everyone evacuated. It's not his fault someone went back in.
@@silversamurai0267 I don't blame Tadashi. But I blame Callaghan for letting Hiro's brother died because of Callaghan save his own skin.
@@silversamurai0267 I feel like he didn't read this
@ Ah yes, well spotted. Callahan COULD HAVE saved Tadashi, but was so concerned with his own preservation so he could I act his revenge, he didn’t think for a second that someone might come looking for him…
"His intellect doesn't make him immortal"
This sentence made me recoil so hard knowing what's coming. Yeesh.
She just woke up one day and decided to start watching all my favorite movies a couple weeks ago.
THAT WAS HIS MISTAKE

17:19 San Francisco if it was also Tokyo. It explains the layout having no rhyme or reason, since one of the cities has a 6-way stop-signed intersection.
“Did he just walk up like a f***in’ villain?”
LOL! Wow, on point with the vibe check.
Man... The Internet really caked up Aunt Cass's marshmallow.
*marshmallows
Sure marshmallows
Leaving the theater with my little cousin, I asked her what was her favorite part of the movie and she gleefully declared “THE FIRE!”
The way she said that, you’d think she wanted to roast marshmallows over it.
So basically we are in the same universe of Ace Attorney.
I don't understand how this movie expects me to believe that a combination of San Francisco and Tokyo would have so little traffic at night.
“Where was I going with this? I had a point?” I relate SO MUCH to that
(probably undiagnosed adhd ass over here)
Alice, if you're curious to know, they made a TV show based on the movie, and it's a continuation. Also, this movie is technically Marvel since Big Hero 6 was originally a Marvel comic book. Oh, I almost forgot, Marshmallow!
Alicia clocked Callahan's tea SO fast 😭 but yeah Baymax is the best marshmallow ever
Another movie i still desperately want a sequel for thats absolutely amazing! Genuinely missed this movie and its awesome vibe!
They had a sequel seria😊
They had an animated series after this.
Personally think this movie is just decent but I think a sequel could have a lot of potential
San Francokiyo is the city that big hero 6 takes place. For the people who don't know or just forgot.
In the comics, Fred could create a Godzilla-like apparition, similar to Stands from JoJo’s.
I love that you called out the bad guy as soon as you saw him. You have amazing intuition! Meanwhile, the reveal at the end threw me for a loop!
like i get the complaints ppl have about this movie with the obvious reveal, but the world, powers, personalities, and aesthetics of this movie will make it one of my all-time favorites
Baymax is basically a big marshmallow. But one that provides therapy.
I dunno if you can find this
There is a Big Hero 6 the animated series that is a continuation to the movie, almost all main cast reprises their role except fred and Wasabi, also they explore some aspect left in the end credits, also there is a full cgi Baymax solo series recently concluded
You know they also made an entire tv show of this on Disney plus if you wanted to react to it as well
3:42 ok but can we talk about how the film gets away with doing the same exposition dump twice in a row. Tadashi does the exact same thing when rescuing Hiro. Beat for beat.
He starts with: "Are you okay? Are you hurt? THEN WHAT WERE YOU THINKING?" Followed by him dumping exposition about Hiro's upbringing.

Alicia is the only marshmallow I've seen vibe check Callahan so hard from frame 1
Fred's room has references to obscure marvel characters, such as black talon, a villain with the power of voodoo
"THAT WAS HIS MISTAKE!!"
-Tamatoa
The statue that was shot during the training montage was hans from frozen. There’s also the ship from frozen as well during the first flight scene when flying over the harbor
Literally my main flaw with this movie is the villain. Yeah, he makes sense thematically as a dark mirror of Hiro, someone who just couldn't process their grief in a healthy way. But his turn from a seemingly kind & wise mentor figure to a cold-blooded psycho is a *little* jarring
Maybe if we had spent more time with him or we got some hints that he obviously has a dark side, it could have worked.
I feel that Disney really wanted to subvert audience expectations with the twist. However, it just feels unrealistic when you think about it a little bit.
14:04 "I thought this was a brother film!"
-proceeds to forget it's also a Disney film-
Fun story, when my sister celebrated her 30th birthday she and her boyfriend had the theme ''I think I'm in the wrong place'' telling every one that the one with the best costume/reson on why they are in the wrong place would get a price.
How Baymax sounded drunk when battery is low is basically Mario kart Wii controls going frenzy during game when remote battery was low
It's such an emotional movie and it's done so well! I showed this to some of my hard as nails friends, now it's one of their favorites.
A small thing i have to say in defense of Krai. When the experiment problem came up he said it was within the parameters. It makes sense he would want to go ahead with the experiment. If the parameters were in dangerous territory it was the fault of the scientists calculating them.

9:24 She immediately guessed the villain based on vibes and got it right!
Fun bit of Trivia: The Doomguy does that Fist Bump too with his collectables.

Fun fact: In this universe San Fransokyo was created after the San Francisco earthquake and was rebuilt by Japanese architects
