Thank you so much for making this video!! I was having such a hard time with this, because the only tutorials I could find were of people. I truly appreciate all that you put into this channel and I am a huge fan of your work! 💜
Perfect, thank you. You are an inspiration and will be eternally grateful to you for all of your unwavering help and confidence building videos. It is so easy for people to not help others achieve their goals but Jess, you are selfless and a wonderful teacher. Please don't let the minority change you, they are not worth it. Everybody here and on the community group LOVES you. 3 months ago if I had to face the complex edit on the course I would have cried! I have now finished the whole composite and I am ready for the edit. YOU and only YOU have made this possible. I am achieving my goals through you. Head up girl!!! With all my gratitude and love to you xx
Thanks - clear and concise. Our smooth Greyhound doesn't provide a challenging subject to practice this on. 😃 Need to get some hairy subjects to practice this on.
I started having this problem a few weeks ago (because I got a border collie puppy) and her hair was also a nightmare to mask out. This was so helpful!!!
Omg thank you so much for this tutorial! I was having the same terrible "colour aware" problem for ages and so glad to finally have a solution😅 Very helpful!
Nice tutorial thanks; needed that. Have you ever tried the Topaz AI mask thing for Ps? I ask because it looks very similar in the way it works to the tool that has been built into the Corel graphics suite for quite a while, and the Corel one is amazing on hair.
@@ThatPhotographySpot unless you already have Corel, not worth bothering; it's not up to Adobe standards as an editor in other areas, but the Topaz one is a Ps plug-in and might be worth a try, especially since you like their other stuff (as do I).
Hi. I have a black lab shoot this weekend. It's timed specifically for golden hour between 6pm-8pm in and around woodland. I have been practising a lot with my Springador. The issue I am having is that his coat is so shiny that when I expose for the darkness of his coat, the shiny parts keep getting blown out. Using a flash just makes it worse. Any advice. Thanks
Sure - you didn't mention your camera make and model which will have an impact on the dynamic range available (what we can save and what we need to sacrifice). I would always prioritise the highlights and safe them, over the shadows - BUT - in your location it will probably be super dark in the woodland, with lovely but bright warm light around the sides. I would recommend either using a bracketing setting or manually taking a shot for the subject and a second shot, exposed lower, for the warm bokeh, then blend the two images together afterwards (if you and the dog don't move, it should be quite easy 🤓 There is a video on the channel for compositing which would suit this type of shot, but if you get stuck, let me know 🙌
@@ThatPhotographySpot Thanks muchly. I will be using a Sony a6000 with a 30mm 1.4. I never considered bracketing. It's a trained gundog so I am hoping for some nice staged shots. They also want some dog +people shots. The owner is a work colleague so it will be a fun relaxed shoot, which helps.
When I finish my masking and press ok it doesnt show my mask in the layers and goes back to selecting it but dpesnt keep mask!??! Is ok the wrong button? Could you help me out 😅
On the right hand side, scroll down to the bottom where "Output settings" are, select Layer Mask from the dropdown instead of selection. Should be fine :)
I'm not sure if I'm missing something but I don't see a huge improvement in the mask you did on the left ear. I can still see that a part of the ear has a red layer on it - was that done on purpose?
There is a huge difference in the mask output using OA instead of colour aware on this dog, no mask auto-generated on Piper is every clean, there is always touch ups to do, mainly on the ears but nowhere near as bad as previously! Try it out and see what you think :)
I was also hating how the contouring went so "all over the place" so I thought I'd finally be able to use the "select and mask" properly, but unfortunately, my 2021 PS-version doesn't show the "color aware" and "object aware" buttons? :( Anyone else?
No way, really?! Is there not a little strip under those top settings with the "refine mode" maybe needing to be dropped down? Are you using CC on the computer/laptop?
@@ThatPhotographySpot, thanks for your reply! No, it's nowhere to be found.. :( Checked all drop downs and did all my Photoshop updates. I have PS 22.3.1 now, and on the previous version (21.2.7) it wasn't there either. Not sure what's wrong..
@@joydeprez3285 i'm having the very same problem with real-time refinements, colour aware and object aware, i have photoshop 2018 but i'm running the latest v 22.5 update
Great video Jess. Not the first masking video I've watched but definitely the easiest to follow.
Glad you liked it!!
Must admit one of the best teachers online x thankyou
A lovely compliment Stephen, thank you so much!

I haven’t but I will try both for sure, thank you for the recommendation 🤓

Just enjoy the experience and see what you get - you can always learn from every shoot 🤓
I have cavalier and it is still such a pain to select his fine hair on his head and ears( it is definitely a challenge!

Can anyone HELP? When I get to the "select and mask" and select it, my ants disappear and I do NOT get a red overlay. Any help would be appreciated!
