How about bronze inspection tools just incase you happen to scuff a part that you later choose not to machine down. Bronze is softer than iron and steel.

So whoever "rebuilt" that engine deserves to lose their job, if it was indeed a so-called professional. Seems like they had no clue what they were doing. Can't really pin the blame on the VG itself for this one.
