    How do you not just listen but be a good listener?
    You need to focus on why someone is saying what they do.
    The formalized communication of NASA is a microcosm of a regular conversation between any two people.
    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    CHRIS HADFIELD:
    “Good morning, Earth.” That is how Colonel Chris Hadfield-writing on Twitter-woke up the world every day while living aboard the International Space Station for over five months. Since blasting off from Kazakhstan in December 2012, Hadfield has become a worldwide sensation, harnessing the power of social media to make outer space accessible to millions and infusing a sense of wonder into the collective consciousness not felt since man first walked on the moon. Called “the most famous astronaut since Neil Armstrong” by the BBC, Hadfield, now safely back on Earth, continues to bring the glory of science and space travel to everyone he encounters.
    Hadfield is the pioneer of many firsts. In 1992, he was selected by the Canadian Space Agency as a NASA Mission Specialist - Canada’s first fully-qualified Space Shuttle crewmember. Three years later, he was the first Canadian to operate the Canadarm in space, and the first Canadian to board a Russian spacecraft as he helped build the Russian space station ‘Mir’. In 2001, he performed two spacewalks - the first Canadian to do so - and in 2010 the CSA and NASA announced Hadfield’s third mission: commanding the International Space Station (ISS)-again a first for a Canadian.
    Hadfield launched into space on December 19, 2012 and took command of the ISS in March. His multiple daily Tweets and photographs from space made people see the world differently. His accessibility, whether answering questions such as, “How do you wring out a washcloth in space,” via Skype or collaborating with The Barenaked Ladies for a song sung by nearly a million people simultaneously, endeared him to all while he orbited Earth.
    A heavily decorated astronaut, engineer, and pilot, Hadfield’s many awards include receiving the Order of Ontario, the Meritorious Service Cross, and the NASA Exceptional Service Medal. He was named the top Test Pilot in both the US Air Force and the US Navy, and has been inducted into Canada’s Aviation Hall of Fame. He is also commemorated on Canadian postage stamps, Royal Canadian Mint silver and gold coins, and on Canada’s new 5 dollar bill.

    TRANSCRIPT:
    Chris Hadfield: I’m certain my wife would not agree that I have good listening skills. It’s human nature: you get preoccupied with your own thoughts, and when I’m busy thinking about something I don’t hear very well, because my brain is sort of already engaged and I don’t necessarily turn noise into a cogent-enough thought that it gets in and I actually acknowledge what somebody is saying-so I’m just as guilty as anyone of not being a good listener.
    I think in order to overcome that you have to deliberately listen, and not just to the words, not just the text, but what was the reason behind the text? What do those words mean culturally? How did the person say them and why? Why did they say them now? What’s the sense of urgency? What is the actual message they’re trying to get across? And so, of course, the best way to verify all that is to engage in discussion. Repeat back what you think you heard.
    A really clinical example is where Mission Control is calling up something important to the spaceship and we know that communication is lousy-there’s little tiny speakers and it’s radios and it’s clipped and it’s digitized, and so we can’t just count on everybody immediately understanding and having good listening skills.
    So we have like, “Houston, station.” “Station, Houston, I’m listening.”
    “Okay Houston what I wanted to talk to you about was-whatever-the carbon dioxide removal equipment, and there’s a problem with the CDRA today and I’m in the checklist on page 221 part B, let me know when you’re there.” “Okay. All right. I’m open to that page now. Go ahead.”
    So think about how that communication is happening. You’ve gotten their attention, they’ve told you “okay you have my attention” and “now this is the thing I’m talking about are you on the same page as me?” “Yes. I am on the same page as you.” “Okay. Now that both of us are on the same page now let’s actually discuss why we’re trying to accomplish this thing. What are the details? What do we need to know? What do you know th...

      Hmm. I believe he said, "According to all known laws of aviation, there is no way a bee should be able to fly. Its wings are too small to get its fat little body off the ground. The bee, of course, flies anyway because bees don't care what humans think is impossible."

      American Disconnects you need to be analytic. When I say that we should listen to what person says means that you should do it, but it doesn't mean that you have to agree to it.

      American Disconnects sorry for the misunderstanding before. Yes, I totally agree with what you said. The thing is, nowadays a lot of people care about themselves and want to have power and be RIGHT without having the understanding of others and as a result propaganda is created to manipulate people and harm people in an indirect way. It is sad to see how in some countries things are getting worse and I feel sorry for that. Nowadays, unfortunately, people are only heard in a tribe and not individually.

    Not to go above listening but its an appears to be astronaut’s nature, thinking of apollo 13 when the commander literally does the physics in his pamphlet, in the crucible of drama was phenomenal. Then double checks with houston within minutes to confirm the corrections in maneuvering, with limited resources(fuel) as well.

    I work in a job where I talk regularly to the police over a radio. I am also a HAM radio operator. The police have there own internal radio training which I have never taken. There are so many times when I hear miss communication between the police because they hold there pride and don't double check things. Whereas I read back instructions given to me by the police and keep it very formal.
    Here is where it gets interesting. My wife recently started working the same place I work. She is also a HAM. Since getting the job our marrage has gotten much better. We have gotten in to the habbit of very formal conversations in our day to day lives. What is comes down to is eventough you may not agree with the other person in a conversation I now try to take more time to understand there point.

    Intent is the biggest keyword here. We have an issue with today's culture, at least in the USA, where people assume the worst in what others say. They don't take the time to look at the full context in which something was said and they don't ask a question to verify intent. This is proving quite detrimental.
    Assumption is an inaccurate way to gather the truth.

  • @jynxkizs
    @jynxkizs 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Roger that. Comments here often give enough feedback to show that people didn't get the message. To be fair, there's often countless interpretation on the situational significance of a message, such as whether it's in the context of another video. I agree getting on the same page is an important step since everyone has their preexisting biases, including me. Weinstein is dong an excellent job as mediator between Peterson and Harris, getting each to repeat what they understood from the other, until the other agrees that is what they meant.

    TH-cam patrons are kindly asked to not feed the trolls (including the tin hat brigade, flat-Earthers and any other fundamentalists), feeding them attention that they so desperately crave, and definitely do not deserve only encourages them to congregate where sane people come to share useful information. They make a mess which currently nobody knows how to clean up, so be considerate and don't feed the trolls.

    best way is to just shut up and don't judge...

    • @jynxkizs
      @jynxkizs 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Judging the importance of the information and how it fits is inevitable, otherwise someone is just a hoarder of conflicting memes that they don't apply to their lives. The trick is to judge AFTER getting the complete message. Too often people's biases kick in, where people will stop listening to new information that disagrees with what they already heard or believed. Sometimes a lot of rearranging is necessary when someone figures out their old belief is wrong, and maybe it just isn't worth the effort and opportunity cost. Also people have varying degrees of effort or opportunity cost depending on their cognitive skills and talents.

    • @Josearnaldomanuel2
      @Josearnaldomanuel2 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Fuck no. That's stonewalling. That's how people stop caring and listening. In communication the Three Way Handshake is the best. SYN, SYN-ACK, ACK. "Judging" carries a negative connotation, if you think that you automatically assume the worst of people and if you do that, that's how miscommunication arises. SYNchronize, are we on the same page? SYNchronize-ACKnowledge, Yes. ACKnowledge, ok let's start discussing. Rinse and repeat. That's what good communication looks like.
