Great video. I have gotten a lot of the Amalgam captures and really like them a lot. My experience mirrors your findings in that for older captures I was cutting the bass on everything and/or leaning toward the "bright" captures which tended to be less boomy or flubby. This comparison really helps clarify what I was doing but not really identifying without the side to side comparison. Thanks!
I have to agree - the DI plus the IR has more clarity and likely less fussing with the EQ to tame the bass. I was intrigued at first about the combo captures - but after seeing this video I would stick to using a separate IR. Thanks for, another very useful video.
Hey David... I am still somewhat new to this whole QC thing, but I am an experienced engineer and I agree on your assessments re: DI and IR. Btw, do you have any of the "Cab In The Room" IRs from Amalgam? Something seems off with those. Feels way too short to be a room sound. And it's super low level! Just reading that the QC truncates IRs to 21ms. That is a bummer.
All your vids are excellent, very deep .. empirical. Are you running stereo for the this video ?? Dual (M) IR .. if hard panned what's the difference to running Stereo ... is it only for stereo effects @ the end of the chain?
The captures are all mono, so I'm using the mono IR Loader. The dual IR is for getting a mix of cabinets not for stereo. I did a while video on parallel processing and stereo effects if you want to check that out.
Especially on the higher gain sounds I definitely prefer the separate IR. I think the ToneX captures don’t have this issue quite as much, but I haven’t done a back to back test like this. It would be very interesting to run an external IR like a Two Notes or Ox.
Thanks for the video. If you want to test other amp+cab captures, try readjusting your hi/lo cut. Set the HPF to ~120 and LPF a bit higher (7000-10000 to taste, especially with higher gain).
Amalgam’s captures are so much better with an IR instead of a full capture. Bought their two rock ones and the full captures have this low end that’s hard to dial out
The “amp + cab” captures may sound better at gig volume though. Well I shouldn’t say “better” but maybe would require less eq to tame the highs that occur from bedroom volume to gig volume.
There’s still not enough information on neural’s site about the device, even a device list would be good , I’m very new to the machine, I only need about 4/5 amp sounds but they don’t even match the cabs automatically
The manual has the full service list, even for the captures. Starts on page 105, I think. (I've had to reference it alot). But I agree that the documentation could be better.

Great info, now to mix both and raise or lower accordingly!
I've always wondered this, thanks for the video!

I was literally just about to pull the trigger on 3 Essentials packs, but now you have me questioning that decision lol
