  • How much did we spend on concrete for our driveway, front yard and back yard?
In this video you get to hear Sam yell at the top of his lungs about concrete. We love how the acid wash top cast came out for our new driveway and backyard concrete and we are going to show you the process of how we got it done.
First you need to form out all the areas, and when you are going for a modern look, there is a lot of details that need to be included. Once you have all the details formed out, you need to add rebar to make sure the concrete will be strong.
At this point you are ready to pour. As the concrete is poured, you need to have concrete finishers at the ready to get the concrete shaped as desired. Once the finishers are done, and the concrete has begun drying but is still wet, the top cast acid needs to be sprayed on. The acid remains on it overnight until it is power washed off. The key here is to make sure that enough of the acid is sprayed on to get the right finish.
Much of our backyard was poured previously and an incorrect amount of the acid wash was placed on so the finish was very spotty and not well done. For a few days we did not have a solution other than rip it all out and start over. Our contractor found a sand-blaster to come in and sand blast the concrete to get a similar finish. This did work, however, we do not recommend sand blasting. It was very loud and messy, and our neighbors were not happy. Next time we will probably opt for ripping it all out and redo-ing.
Once it is all done, Sam goes over the cost of all of this. Stick around to the end to see the bloopers!

Great . But those in California are called fake floating steps. That’s simply just a lipped step.
True floating cantilever steps require you to pour every other step. Pour and finish, then come back next day to form and pour and finish the next ones. Only a few companies do it

The best solution is to simply wash it with acid. .. that's one of the ways we did it before topcast... also why they call it an acid wash sand finish.😂

Looks pretty good , a nice muriatic acid wash 3 - 4 days after will really make her shine , customer not happy get a similar water based translucent concrete stain and it will look amazing 👍

We initially did Topcast 1, (which I believe is the less aggressive one). Topcast 1 is harder to work with but produces a more desirable outcome in for pool side. It’s less rough on the feet when running around and swimming. If you don’t plan on being barefoot then I would just have your concrete guy pour you two sample 1x1 squares and you can see which one looks more appealing to you. Hope that helps.

Sample squares, each 5 gallon buckets cost 400 dollars

Why didn't you acid wash the concrete by the pool, its literally called acid wash not top cast wash, all you had to do is buy muriatic acid and a steel broom and washed with acid

We made the decision to stop sharing sub contractor information because we had a few issues with sub contractors after the fact or with people we recommended to. It ends up creating unsolicited issues for us. But a word of advice is to do all your research on what you want and ask a lot of questions. If at any point you do not feel 100% satisfied with the answers or how the questions are answered I would say that is a major red flag and to keep looking. Wishing you the best of luck!

Use a 50/50 6 sack pea mix or a 60/40 6 sack pea gravel mix
