      I was surprised to see him cut the key way using a handheld grinder, I was thinking for something like that, rigging the grinder up in a fixture and having the work piece move back and forth underneath would have created a more accurate key way with a lot less stressful effort. Not being critical just thinking laterally. :))

    Congratulations on some of the most ingenious ways of achieving something without having the normal tools to do it with.
    Your method of 'milling' using an angle grinder is something a lot of people would never have undertaken.
    A morse taper in the tail-stock could be a future project maybe, allowing far bigger drilling and milling with the work bolted to the saddle.

      One of his helping hands is that he hasn't had as many helping hands as we all have had in the way we machine things. Newbies who have a God given ability to build , see things differently than we do or how to build them in a way that we are not in tuned to building. Like in a tooling shop it wouldn't take long to tell who's apprentice was working on something because they done things like their master. Sometimes those kids would have an idea that was so out of the ordinary , but a very simple solution to a big problem.

    Hi. That is one awesome built lathe. I use a light coat of used motor oil to lube the parts I am cutting, Better cuts and easier on the tooling. Just don't breath the smoke. I have a small mini lathe I use for small parts, keep up the great videos.

      Try diesel fuel and mix with rapid tap if you want the ultimate cutting fluid. Cheap and it lasts a long time and you get a mirror finish.

    Great gob you could bore it with the lathe to a morse taper at a later date.

  • @captaingreenbush
    @captaingreenbush 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    you should put a drill in the chuck and use it to drill your tailstock quill all the way through, get a morse taper reamer and ream it for #2 or #3 morse taper then make the screw long enough that when you back the quill all the way in it will kick out the taper, this does two things, 1 it ensures alignment, and 2 it lets you use standard drills, reamers, centers, and drill chucks with taper shanks like on a standard commercial metal lathe, you will find this most useful. you should also make a split on the back side of your tailstock barrel and weld on a couple bosses, one tapped and one with a clearance for a bolt so it will squeeze the barrel smaller locking your quill in place, you will want this as it is much more rigid than your current setup., the split needn't be full length maybe for a few inches from the front and drill a hole at the end to avoid making a stress riser. looking at a south bend tailstock this will all become clear, many other makers did it the same way.

    • @ibrafull
      @ibrafull 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well, it's probably easier, it probably will be in the cartridge to install the center, because I think that he will do the center himself

    You can get a MT2 Reamer set from eBay for under $20. With it you could have cut the MT2 taper into your tail stock and been able to change out the chuck with just about any size chuck you wanted. Plus tap followers, dead and live centers etc. A Chuck on a MT 2 arbor is also under $20 on eBay. Even a 3/4" Chuck is only a little over $20. You will also want to put a cam lock on your tail stock. Screwing the quill in and out with that hand wheel is going to get lame Quick!

    Great machine you made,but i have seen some problems with your machine: v belt to loose and the mainframe is not stiff enaugh ,wich causes vibrations and bad surface results on metal (also you have to use the correct angle off chissel) : build as much extra ribs on the main frame as possible and make the holder for chissel some rubuster,this gives a stiffer machine and better results ! I have made some machines and i had the same vibration problems. I have a chinese lathe,then a myford,and later a Hembrug wich is about 600kg (stiff.....) See my films on youtube and let me know if you have some problems with constructing. Fims name "Hembrug met frequentieregelaar''. John From Holland

  • @snowflakemelter1172
    @snowflakemelter1172 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    I am an engineer and this is an epic project but sadly pointless, the basis of machine tool manufacture is higher tolerance than what you produce from it, what is produced is never as accurate than the machine itself. The tolerances on this machine are so sloppy that it will only ever produce crude end results, the work and cost put into it are not better than buying a used lathe which are not expensive in comparison.
