My best advice is to open your palette at least once a week and give each color a stir. If any colors look suspect, use a clean brush and remove the top layer, then drop a tiny drop of clove bud oil into it. This is antimicrobial and keeps anything from growing. Don’t add too much as it can change the consistency. If any colors look dry, add a spritz of water and stir. Using the gouache regularly helps avoid these issues, plus it means you’re practicing and improving!
I do so look forward to your videos, Sarah, and this video is a very helpful one! 😊. I love the vibrant primaries you showed us and the mixes they produce! The resulting colours are so beautiful! Can you please advise which colours I can mix, along with their ratios, to get “potter’s pink” which you can buy in watercolour?
@@monalisamackey783 There's not a direct equivelant, but if you mix the red/yellow with white (more red) you'll get a pale pink. Add a tiny touch of blue to lean towards brown. (Mixing all three primaries in various ways gives you a lot of browns)
I never have a problem with Schminke Horadam going mouldy. The only brand with which I find that is a problem is M.Graham which uses honey in their formulation.
I'm a watercolor artist and a professional face painter. I just bought my first set of gouache paints last weekend (they were on clearance at Hobby Lobby, and I had a gift card). It's amazing how different types of paint require some different techniques to get the most out of them. I've found that I can actually paint some of my face painting designs (mostly flowers) with the gouache paints, as well as the "one stroke" painting style. I'm going to have fun with these paints. You video has been very informative, and I'm definitely subscribing.
All cool primary colors. I also like that better than the traditional primaries. It’s also probably why, in the traditional four-color printing process, magenta is the red that is used.
Spraying and stirring with a toothpick after letting water sit on it for w0 minutes brings it back completely. Just don’t add too much water. And Sarah if you want your Shinhan gouache creamier like your other favorites, just add a few drops of gum Arabic to your gouache. I have the same sealable palate as you and after going through a lot last year I had burnout and needed time to grieve so my gouache went untouched in my little sealable palette. 5 months to be exact and because I added gum Arabic and 2 drops of clove oil to each color and stirred them up, I had absolutely no mold, and most of the colors except for three were still pretty creamy although a bit drier so I needed to wet them. I was so amazed.
The Shinhan is creamy. The Holbein is the more stiff of all of mine. But yes, I could definitely add some gum arabic. And also the Winsor & Newton watercolor blending medium makes it more usable too.
This is incredibly helpful! Getting started with a new traditional medium is stressful because its hard to know what to start off with. You've given me all the info I've been looking for in one convenient video! Thank you so much!

Hi Sarahh, I love you videos especially your gouache study videos. Im a beginner in gouache and your videos helped me a lot. I’m definitely looking forward to more gouache videos from you ❤
Hullo Sarah, thank you for sharing this beginner gouache video! So many good ideas too! I am still watching and learning. I am just hesitant about going back into gouache as it was not the most joyful experience with painting in my journey. You are truly inspirational and a real delight to watch and learn from, thank you. I am still looking for some larger format painting videos, I have seen you do a few midsize pictures, do you work larger? You do a lot of sketchbook painting, do you have plans to create larger paintings from your sketchbook paintings? I have discovered a soft pastel painter who works with watercolor/gouache for their studies in sketchbooks then works larger in the studio! Thank you for sharing all of your knowledge with us.
Wow Sarah this is definitely the best video of yours for beginners!! I am still learning so much from your perspective, artwork, & knowledge. I am really impressed with your primary color palette and I think 🤔 that I will definitely be adding the additional blue you chose since I already have the other 2 primaries. Those choices definitely expand the mix able color range. Thanks for sharing this wonderful informational video with us! 💕🎨👩🏻🎨💖
I would love to try a Gouache that truly is lightfast , otherwise the art is paint will no last for the future . Only for some years . Hugs and thank you for all you teach us !🥰
Thanks for posting this. It inspires me, to see the growth and the steadily increasing skills of YT artists over time. You're art, imo, SPRUNG to new levels w inclusion of greys. TY. I just bought my 1st 'set' of gouache, Holbein 24 .
Thanks so much for your videos! I love your work. I often use gauche in a dried palette (easier for travel) - I add a humectant to the paint before drying in the pans (usually in layers). You can use honey and/or vegetable glycerin (I use a combo plus a little gum arabic). Just a drop or two per half pan should do it - I add more to colors that dry harder. This prevents cracking and allows the paint to be re-wet much more easily. Caveat - adding too much will make the paint stay sticky (like M. Graham watercolors) and may make the paint shiny when dry, usually if used in a thick layer. Adding just enough to keep the paints from cracking is the perfect amount - it may take some trial & error. I also use a little of the mixture if the hardened paint starts to come out of a pan (ditto for watercolor) - it acts like a glue but does not harm the paints nor the lightfastness.
This video was very helpful. I just received your lovely brush set and am waiting for a Schmincke gouache shipment from Jackson’s to arrive hopefully this week🤞I decided to be frugal and chose the super cheap postage to the US and the shipment has been moving on the East coast for 5 days!! Can’t wait to get started and I look forward to your upcoming gouache videos. Thanks for sharing your expertise with us.
That’s exciting! Yea there’s been a major disruption in exporting shipments from the UK (they said it’s due to a cyber attack??) so at the moment I can’t even ship anything outside UK. Hopefully Jacksons has some kind of deal with them to get priority
My brushes were delivered the day before yesterday! They're lovely, I'm looking forward to playing with them more. The round brushes tips stay nice and fine, so much easier to use than my other synthetic brushes.
That's awesome to hear! If it's not too much to ask could you leave a review on the product page? It will definitely help when it's time for the second release :)
seeing the paintings in the sketchbook brought me back to the days I would binge watch gouache paintthroughs i miss those days 😩 your prefered palette looks like the CMY w/o the K (black) and I second that it's probably the best primary palette since the gamut possbilities are wider than the classical RYB. Holbein, Da Vinci, Royal Talens, Maimeri are some brands that have the CMYK+W starter sets
Hi Sarah again from Jim... I had another question... since I am usually travelling a lot and can't find time for nature (which is my passion - nature and wildlife as a photographer and, now, painting)... What type of colours would you suggest in Gouache for more if an "urban sketching" (as they call it now... to me it was always "painting out doors", but things change)... I'm asking you because I'm not sure which base colours might be best and I've seen other videos and I would like an opinion from a real artist as yourself... Again... I hope you can help me and I will continue to follow your videos... you are an inspiration!!! Thank you!
It has been a while since I follow you. Hope you are having lots of fun painting. I have to go back and watch those one I missed. By the way I love your painting, they are amazing! I love oil painting but now that I’ve seen your watercolor painting I think they are the best! Could you please share the name of your top gouache brands?
Do you take your custom set of brushes outside with you, or are those for studio use only? If you aren't going to be taking them outside, which brushes do you use for plein aire?
I have a smallish set of WN gouache. But here in the U.S. WN Designer Gouache is very pricey. Unfortunately, Jackson's can't ship to the US, and the UK price for WN gouache is much more reasonable. I guess due to some trade restrictions? Don't know. But I saw a review of Turner Acryl gouache that was a lot more affordable and pretty impressive, so I bought a small set and they swatched out very nice. I think they would really be good for underpainting, as the acrylic won't rewet. I'd like to try their regular gouache too.
I heard about clove oil being a perfect solution for keeping oil paints wet and mould free. Maybe that could help you with guache as well? Just a drop or two onto a sponge should do the trick. 🙂 I have to get that stay wet palette you are using. I'm an oil painter and would like to try plain air gouache painting for a while before I do oil plain air sessions. This would be a perfect solution for me! Thanks for sharing your arsenal of tools!
Very interesting video, Sarah! Thank you for making these! I'm very new to gouache but have been using watercolor for a while and the "one Gouache question" I keep on asking myself is: If Gouache is something like an "opaque version of watercolor" why does it need to stay wet between sessions? Couldn't you let it dry in a palette like watercolor and rewet from there? Or would it behave so differently after rewetting that it would not perform as needed anymore?
Watercolor isn’t opaque. It requires water to activate. Gouache is opaque in its liquid form, before you add water. So if you let it dry it requires water to activate, and thus losing some opacity
Hi Sarah - I recently found your channel, as I'm beginning my gouache journey, and am bingeing a bit. ☺I'm starting with a limited palette, but I'm curious about "the one true black" (meaning: if I were to get one, which?) - perylene black, jet black, ivory black, lamp black... Thank you for all your knowledge & experience that you generously share.💕
My brushes have finally made it to Canada and cleared customs, hoping they reach me in the next few days! Appreciate the mixing tips and seeing the 3 primaries you enjoy working with. That’s where I struggle, picking my 3 because there are so many different combinations to try! I follow a number of artists in different countries and always find it interesting to hear the brands that are easily available / affordable in different places. I’m just thankful that Jackson’s ships everywhere so I can purchase Schmincke and have it shipped, because it is incredible expensive here. Winsor & Newton is also very expensive here (and sometimes hard to get certain colours). Unfortunately, W&N can’t be shipped to Canada from Jackson’s. My local art store carries Maimeri gouache and it’s probably the easiest/cheapest for me to buy. I bought W&N 10-tube intro set of gouache (cost $100 Cdn, compared to $44 Cdn at Jackson’s…if they could ship it to Canada).
Hello! Thank you for such a helpful video! The colors that you mention you prefer using, are the names that they're called in Winsor & Newton. I was looking on the website and I couldn't find the lemon yellow or magenta. Can you tell me the names for these colors in this brand? Thank you!!!
Hello Sarah, from a New Yorker living in Madrid, Spain (love is blind and will take you anywhere and everywhere!). But enough about me... I joined your TH-cam channel a couple of months ago (I don't usually post a lot) and I was thrilled!!! So... Thank you for sharing your Art, your techniques and your vision... I recovered my Artistic side this past year. I had to give it up as a teenager due to Life... But I am back with a vengeance (LOL in a good way!). Your channel was inspiring and it was the first example of Gouache I saw... I was using pencil, coloured pencils, ink and wash as well as only watercolor... But after watching you I decided it was the next step! And I thankfully took it!! Do thank you very much! I have a question, though... I have been using ( all Artist grade) W&N, some Schmincke (only for some "special" colours) and I bought some Daniel Smith this Christmas, but I would like to know your opinion on using them (mixed) with some Holbein from the US (which have a different binding, based on "honey", or so I understand)... Do they really mix and blend together well? And do they have similar maintenance? I just don't want to spend the money if their could be an issue... (I'm constructing my palette from multiple brands, depending on the colours I need). Sorry to bother you and, again... Thank you very much for your work and sharing... it has been very inspiring and I will continue to watch your channel with great expectation!. Cheers from Madrid!!!!
It's totally fine to mix brands. The only thing I'd consider with a 'honey binder' is that I've heard from many people that those will grow mold faster in an air-tight palette unless you use them like constantly..
@@SarahBurnsStudio Wow... I wasn't aware of the Mold issue, so thank you very much for the advice! I'll have to check that out before I purchase the mixed brand colour palette I'm trying to build. Cheers from Madrid!
Thank you for this video! I recently purchased the 10 set of 14ml tubes of Winsor & Newton gouache and the travel airtight case with water cup. I love it! Lemon yellow is probably my favorite and I've been using quin. Magenta a lot more. Definitely going to try this trio !
Your gouache sketches and paintings are sooo lovely - watercolours are the love of my life but often I'm tempted to try gouache because I love the matt look of them and I often wonder if painting with gouache is easier than watercolours because it appears to be easier to control???
They both have their quirks and things you have to get used to. In general I’d say watercolor is the hardest of all the mediums. Since gouache is opaque you can technically cover up something you paint. But you also have to contend with the blending monster!
Thanks for another great video! Your brushes came and they're gorgeous. So glad I didn't dawdle around before ordering them. Is there any chance that you might design a travel set? That could be a perfect sequel.
Dear Sarah : I am a Graphic designer , I’ve been using W&N designers gouache for 35 years , It is what we GD use to paint illustrations at college . And by experience they are not so lightfast , my pictures lasted only max 8 years with the bright colors they had .
Nice to have discovered your channel! Saw you on Jess Karp's video. I'm subscribed! I've only been using watercolor medium for 2 years and recently started gouache. It helps me formulate a better understanding of these two mediums if i can get a side by side tutorial. Eg: Blending watercolor vs gouache. Creating highlights using watercolor vs gouache. What is "transparency" when using gouache in place of watercolor. Maybe you have covered this in another video on brushes (i'll check your videos out) -- do you advice sharing brushes between the mediums and why? I worry about the longevity of the brushes as I tend to be more "forceful" when I pick up gouache and I definitely need to clean my brushes vigorously. Thank you!!
Great video- especially the section on color! I know landscapes are your thing but I'd like to challenge you to paint your cat(s) as there must be many cat lovers out there. They're the perfect subject for winter when you're stuck indoors.
I’d never heard of a wax finish, very interesting. I’ll check to see if you have a video on that. I can’t seem to find the list of artists working in gouache that you said were worth looking for? Haven’t used gouache in many, many years and looking forward to starting again. Turns out it was the same price to buy a 24 set of Holbein as the 10 tubes I wanted in W&N (the world of commerce can be quite baffling), so I’ll start with those. Loved the look of your brushes, such nice long bristles! They should get here in a couple of weeks :)
I didn't notice the mention or listing of the name of the small travel palette, I would love to get this palette . It is the perfect size. Do you insert the colors or does it come with?
Thank you for this advice, I’ve been trying to paint scandi style with undiluted acrylic, but it’s not going well, can’t seem to get a clean finish, tends to go muddy. Wondering if it’s my technique, or I’ll have better success with gouache.
Hi Sarah, thanks for all your videos, including the Sarah in Scotland ones, I love them all! Question: Da Vinci has an opaque water color line that they say is NOT gouache, what is the difference? I thought gouache was opaque watercolor. TIA
Hi Sarah, you are a great artist! I don't really know about gouache, is it similar to acrylic? It's possible to use for a one move nail art technic? Can you tell me please, what's the difference between acrylic and gouache paint? Thank you!😊
Hi Sarah, thank you so much for all of your videos! I'm looking to buy your suggested palette but can't find quinacridone magenta by schminke, do you know who does make it?
Hi Sarah, I'm just getting into gouche and loving it. Can you answer a question for me, can you paint ordinary gouche over acrylic gouche? I've got both and wondered if you can do a background with the acrylic so it doesn't move when you paint on top thanks
As always very informative, Sarah. Just wondering. Do you know anything about acrylic gouache? Or why one would use it? I would like to try regular gouache, but I'm hesitant. Not sure I'd like it since I'm not a fan of watercolor, but I would like to try something that covers better than watercolor.
You little square travel palette looks perfect, with that flexible sealing liner. But when I go to your supplies link, Jackson shows a teaser of it, then flips to their general site, and it doesn’t show up under travel palettes or palettes in general. Is it discontinued? Is there a brand name to search for? Hope you’ll see this and reply.
You can use gouache similar to watercolor (diluted). But to get the most out of it, usually using less water and let the color remain more opaque. That's what makes it unique. The biggest change would be that gouache never 'cures' meaning it doesn't become permanent like acrylic. If you get your dried painting wet, the color can be reactivated. Some people hate that. But I like being able to blend into my underlayers.
I got the Turner gouache for Christmas. I want to explore gouache but not spending big money on something that I might not like in the end. What's your thoughts on Turner? How does it compare to WN or Schmincke?
If I don't have the Quinacridone Magenta available to me, would Purple Magenta or Carmine be a fine replacement? Also, are there a couple of other colours you would add to round out the capabilities of the primaries?
If you check out the blog post I linked to, I offer some alternatives :) But yes carmine would be a good alternative because its a bit cooler but still very vibrant
I watched a video and listed colours to buy. Now I can’t find the list or video! I have some basic gouache but wanted to buy the four schminke you recommended, Helios Turquoise, Titanium gold ochre but what are the other two?
Can I ask you, how do you get rid of your gouache and watercolor water? I heard some people get rid of their acrylic paint water in kitty litter and then throw it out in the trash. I’ve just been dumping them down my kitchen sink 🫣
@@SarahBurnsStudio As you have more experience than me, I'm curious to know what you think about this gouache. I love the purity/brightness of the colors even if I do struggle with some of them (hard to rewet) and I'm curious to know if it's the way I use them or if it's just the way they are. Are there some colors harder to rewet by example?
gouache is evil! 😝 I will not be defeated by binder and pigment! 😛 i thought about getting one of these 8:56 but thought I should probably come to terms with using gouache before i spend too much more money on it lol

@@SarahBurnsStudio Of course!
seeing the paintings in the sketchbook brought me back to the days I would binge watch gouache paintthroughs i miss those days 😩 your prefered palette looks like the CMY w/o the K (black) and I second that it's probably the best primary palette since the gamut possbilities are wider than the classical RYB. Holbein, Da Vinci, Royal Talens, Maimeri are some brands that have the CMYK+W starter sets
Good advice in this video. Thank you
thanks for sharing sarah ^_^
Nice to hear, that you want to make more gouache and plein air videos this year 🥰🥰
Another informative and entertaining video Sarah. I love love love my Sarah brushes..
Thank you!
The primaries + black / white will allow you to paint everything under the sun :) In my blog post I list a bunch of color options
@@SarahBurnsStudio Sorry for my delay in responding to your comment and thank you very much for your help! Cheers from Madrid!
Great information, thank you!
I'd love a follow up on how to get started technique wise :)
It has been a while since I follow you. Hope you are having lots of fun painting. I have to go back and watch those one I missed. By the way I love your painting, they are amazing! I love oil painting but now that I’ve seen your watercolor painting I think they are the best! Could you please share the name of your top gouache brands?
Thank you for giving so much practical info
Do you take your custom set of brushes outside with you, or are those for studio use only? If you aren't going to be taking them outside, which brushes do you use for plein aire?
Usually travel watercolor brushes
I have a smallish set of WN gouache. But here in the U.S. WN Designer Gouache is very pricey. Unfortunately, Jackson's can't ship to the US, and the UK price for WN gouache is much more reasonable. I guess due to some trade restrictions? Don't know. But I saw a review of Turner Acryl gouache that was a lot more affordable and pretty impressive, so I bought a small set and they swatched out very nice. I think they would really be good for underpainting, as the acrylic won't rewet. I'd like to try their regular gouache too.
Verla Springs
@@SarahBurnsStudio Aaah, that's the point 💡Thank you!😁
Ty for the video. My bf and I are amazed at your work
Thank you!
Yea I had heard W&N is expensive there. That's a bummer. But at least you have other options!
I will start🌻🙂
Hello! Thank you for such a helpful video! The colors that you mention you prefer using, are the names that they're called in Winsor & Newton. I was looking on the website and I couldn't find the lemon yellow or magenta. Can you tell me the names for these colors in this brand? Thank you!!!
Thank you ☺️
Hello Sarah, from a New Yorker living in Madrid, Spain (love is blind and will take you anywhere and everywhere!).
Love your gauche videos!
With that black sponge, how do you check for mold or mildew? By smell?
Is there a difference in gouache brushes and watercolor brushes, Sarah.? Very nice video by the way.
No they can be used interchangeably
It depends more on the shape you like to paint with which is different for everyone
Thank you for this video! I recently purchased the 10 set of 14ml tubes of Winsor & Newton gouache and the travel airtight case with water cup. I love it!
Lemon yellow is probably my favorite and I've been using quin. Magenta a lot more. Definitely going to try this trio !
Sounds great!
What is the brand of the little travel box of gouache you showed?
I know you usually do landscapes, but you have those 2 cute little cats. Could you do a demo of painting a cat or two?
I was thinking about that too...
Dear Sarah : I am a Graphic designer , I’ve been using W&N designers gouache for 35 years , It is what we GD use to paint illustrations at college .
And by experience they are not so lightfast , my pictures lasted only max 8 years with the bright colors they had .
Yes I’ve heard that about some of the ‘bright’ colors. Definitely good to avoid those.
I saw you from Jess' vid and your gouache paintings look amazing! The homemade palette is so cool ❣❣
Hello, thank you :)
Thank you!!
I'll be doing a separate video about gouache techniques :)
Great video- especially the section on color! I know landscapes are your thing but I'd like to challenge you to paint your cat(s) as there must be many cat lovers out there. They're the perfect subject for winter when you're stuck indoors.
Haha good idea :) I'd have to do it late at night while they are sleeping since they spend most of the day outside
I really hope you enjoy gouache! A few awesome artists who often use gouache are: Nathan Fowkes, Mike Hernandez, Lena Rivo
And @hamrib on youtube makes wonderful videos
I didn't notice the mention or listing of the name of the small travel palette, I would love to get this palette . It is the perfect size. Do you insert the colors or does it come with?
All the product names/links are in the blog post :) Yes you have to add your own colors.
Have you tried M. Graham's gouache? I realize that would be more expensive in Scotland...
I will be soon
@SarahBurnsStudio looking forward to hearing how you like it!
Did you try caran d’ache portable gouache palette?
The pans? Yes, aweful
TIA
Maybe it’s just less opaque
Does a gouache painting need to be framed with glass or are they varnished? Thank you for this video!
Since it’s not permanent (in the sense that you can rewet with water) You can seal with cold wax or varnish (tests recommended) or frame under glass
@@SarahBurnsStudio thank you!
Hi Sarah, you are a great artist! I don't really know about gouache, is it similar to acrylic? It's possible to use for a one move nail art technic? Can you tell me please, what's the difference between acrylic and gouache paint? Thank you!😊
Acrylic is permanent, plastic based paint. Gouache is more like watercolor, not permanent and gum arabic binder
Hi Sarah, thank you so much for all of your videos! I'm looking to buy your suggested palette but can't find quinacridone magenta by schminke, do you know who does make it?
Holbein
Hi Sarah, I'm just getting into gouche and loving it. Can you answer a question for me, can you paint ordinary gouche over acrylic gouche? I've got both and wondered if you can do a background with the acrylic so it doesn't move when you paint on top thanks
Gouache will usually only stick to a somewhat porous surface so a slick sheet of acrylic may not work.
I barely have any experience with it. In my mind that is basically matte acrylic.
That’s odd, the link works for me. But anyway, it’s weird but its called a ‘studio essentials foldable bucket brush washer’ on their site.
I love water colour and have been toying with the idea of trying gouache. Is there a big technique change? More than the amount of water you use
Have you tried the new Daniel Smith Gouache?
No
I got the Turner gouache for Christmas. I want to explore gouache but not spending big money on something that I might not like in the end. What's your thoughts on Turner? How does it compare to WN or Schmincke?
I've never used it
@@SarahBurnsStudio Thanks.
If I don't have the Quinacridone Magenta available to me, would Purple Magenta or Carmine be a fine replacement? Also, are there a couple of other colours you would add to round out the capabilities of the primaries?
If you check out the blog post I linked to, I offer some alternatives :)
But yes carmine would be a good alternative because its a bit cooler but still very vibrant
@@SarahBurnsStudio Cool. I'll check it out.
I watched a video and listed colours to buy. Now I can’t find the list or video! I have some basic gouache but wanted to buy the four schminke you recommended, Helios Turquoise, Titanium gold ochre but what are the other two?
was it this video? th-cam.com/video/xHaLZdjvY2w/w-d-xo.html
Can I ask you, how do you get rid of your gouache and watercolor water? I heard some people get rid of their acrylic paint water in kitty litter and then throw it out in the trash. I’ve just been dumping them down my kitchen sink 🫣
Yes, the sink. For acrylics or anything heavy, I use the bucket method. You can also buy a ‘crash kit’ by Golden
How did you get into Scotland to live?
Have you tried SUI gouache?
no
Have you tried the Lefranc Bourgeois LINEL gouache? I love the rubis red by example
No I haven’t
@@SarahBurnsStudio As you have more experience than me, I'm curious to know what you think about this gouache. I love the purity/brightness of the colors even if I do struggle with some of them (hard to rewet) and I'm curious to know if it's the way I use them or if it's just the way they are. Are there some colors harder to rewet by example?
@@reneecailloux2573 I very rarely let my gouache dry out. I use it in fresh liquid form. That’s why I use a stay-wet palette or my travel palette.
gouache is evil! 😝 I will not be defeated by binder and pigment! 😛 i thought about getting one of these 8:56 but thought I should probably come to terms with using gouache before i spend too much more money on it lol
😂
Rgb n cmyk in paint
What does hue mean on paint colour x
Hue = color
Saturation = intensity of color
Value = lightness or darkness of color (compared to black/white)

But what's the difference between designer's and artist's gouache?
Typically designer’s gouache lines are not known for lightfastness, but you’ll still find some lightfast options in them.
