Sarah!! Just wanted to tell you how much I love your channel! Yesterday was my birthday, and my husband surprised me with your brush set!! I didn't think he was paying attention to my hints lol... I am so excited to use them!!! Thank you so much for sharing your abundance of knowledge and geeking out to art with all of us art nerds! sincerely, an art college drop out lol
I love that you are a regular, genuine person. Your little studio looks like a real life studio. I hate that everything has to be Pinterest perfect anymore. Thank you for keeping it real.
I loved seeing your brush technique in this video. So inspiring and informative. I also learned so much about how to later gouache! Thank you or sharing.
Thank you for the anxiety trick. That is exactly me, I will freeze up and get frustrated. And then not paint or draw. I will now be printing my photos and making a grab bag to do my next painting. Might do this all the time. It takes the actual step that I could spend hours on figuring out what to paint next.
Having a picture based encyclopedia on hand is my go to for just picking an animal or something to warm up if I have decision paralysis. Usually after I finish one, I've gotten in the groove to wander with my brush and try some random ideas.I also find that having the physical printed material helps my focus and eliminating distractions vs using my computer!
Love love your videos from your creativity to your advice to all the talent you share. Love love the videography of your process, love that you are in the top corner while doing voice over. Great video. Thanks.
The waterfall you worked on around 16:25 is lovely. I love the atmospheric perspective you created. I feel like something might pop out around the sharp edge of the rocky form in the foreground.
Thank you. I get bored so easily trying to find inspiration. I envy your ability to just create in your head. I have a terrible time doing that and even when I do manage to come up with something it usually looks contrived. The area I live in is very uninspirational. Believe me when I say you are incredibly lucky to live in such a beautiful area! Love your work. I don't even use gouache and I love seeing how you are able to build such beautiful works with it. Mine always looks like a child's school poster. Lol. Thanks again for the ideas.
Hi, these vignettes are delightful and truly inspirational. I should imagine doing this exercise would definitely lead to painting larger versions of what originally drew you to your most significant places. Happy painting and have a great xmas break.
@@SarahBurnsStudio I can imagine. The moment when a pink swatch amongst green swatches suddenly is a beautiful water lily on a pond, and some white thing all of a sudden is a waterfall when the dark thing comes along.
Love this. Thank you Sarah - I'm going to your suggestions especially the one where you printed off a bunch of pictures in different sizes - love this idea.
Thank you for sharing such an inspiring video. Great ideas, Sara. I could listen to your ideas all day…and you have such a soothing voice. One thing I do to get me painting is that I set up two places in my “studio” (tiny bedroom). Those spaces have everything set out to start (or continue) a painting. Brushes, pencil, eraser are there, water container is there, paper or pad is set up, tape is already around the edges, and palette or tubes are there, paper towel or cloth are set out there…no excuse to not just jump right in…😊
Thank you for mentioning aphantasia. I’m one of them, only found out quite recently, i have never been able to create a visual image. Didn’t know it was actually something people actually did, create visual images that is. I really need references. My imaginary work is pure doodles, mainly circles! 😊
Such a packed video :) so many good ideas and advises in here, I will defenetly have to rewatch this a few more times. I will try the printing out of pictures and putting them in a jar !!!! What I had done in November, was what I called the "gratitude month", where each day I painted one vignette of something I had been grateful for during the previous day. It aws such a nice exercise because I had to paint something, and it made me much more focus on little things that I could pick to paint every day. At the back of each vignette I wrote a few senteces and I noz have a beautiful tiny collection of happy, funnny, cute mondain moments to cherish and remember.
I LOVED this session. I'm really trying to get myself back into painting and art in general. Finding you + gouache has helped SO much that I've finally started using my art journal and the idea of using pictures from my adventures felt like a facepalm moment. Thank you!
Hullo Sarah, this was a lovely video! I have become much better with soft pastels by working small! 6x8 inches is a “big” picture! But by working small like 6x8 gives me less to worry about! I use less paper less of my sticks are used up and I create more ideas for time spent as well! This can translate to gouache and watercolor too! You are truly amazing and I am thankful for your kindness and inspiration.
they are so beautiful! I instantly wanted to watch the video again right after I finished watching the first time! the way you made the water looks like they're splattering and running in the waterfall piece is so awesome 👏👏👏
Love the idea of having some small printed photos ready to go! I find photo organization on my phone is frustrating (at best), so I’ll get distracted just looking for my painting photos. Great tips and helpful to watch you paint a variety of small paintings!
Ohh, this morning I am just envious of those of you who simply lack inspiration. I have plenty of time and inspiration but have a vision disorder that makes painting more than 1 hr per day extremely painful. This hit me 25 years ago at age 47. And so, dear friends, enjoy your physical abilities while you can❤️
It all sounds all too familiar!!! I never knew it was called decision fatigue. I love your tips and suggestions for getting out of this mode that always leaves me so exhausted that I din’t end up painting anything. I will be printing and organizing my photos all in one place to choose.
Thanks for sharing I like to paint on the small side especially when I was ill it made me feel connected with my art and still doing it lots of great ideas thank you ❤
Same problem!!!! I created a file last year called "paintworthy". I have a lot of both printed and digital photos scanned to my tablet. I like being able to zoom in and have a bigger reference to look at. I learn how to paint kinds of landscapes to be able to paint my mind's eye ideal painting.
Oh my, I feel so understood. Decision paralysis... Big time! And I so want to get out, paint on location, but I have Raynauds, and it's really not possible when it's cold. I planned a few big paintings, but the perfectionism is keeping me from beginning 😮💨
Really useful tips, inspiring paintings and sage advice. Thank you for sharing your skills and experience. I am looking for a new printer, the images you printed out look crisp. What printer do you use please?🙏🏾
6:40 Yeah, I’m one of those people who can’t visualize (aphantasia). I’m currently working on what you talked about, changing certain things instead of just automatically representing exactly what I see, and then also trying to build a sort of “semantic visual library” in my mind. I can’t picture how that animal’s jaw goes, but I can store it semantically “okay it has an angle like this going that way, and wraps around there like this,” etc.
I like to separate my reference hunting from my painting time. Scroll in bed saving a bunch of refs, then quickly pick one at semi-random from that pool when I want to paint.
I almost picked up a mini zink printer for printing reference pictures, but skipped it. Maybe I should reconsider it! The tracing paper tip is great one!

Loved these ideas, Sarah. One thing I want to work on is coming up with a couple of goals to focus on so I’m not so all over the place. Any good suggestions? One I’ve thought of is to practice more with gouache (instead of watercolor) and am thinking of a weekly goal of painting 1 painting a week. Would appreciate any ideas or thoughts you might have.
More drawing. It’s less reliant on materials and you can do it literally anywhere. I find drawing often leads to my most creative ideas. As for theme you could pick one per week (like one week forests, then boats, cats, cathedrals, whatever)
I find it very difficult to paint indoors, because no photo model vibrates like nature does when I paint outdoors. But thanks to your excellent suggestions, I think it will be much easier and more pleasant to paint indoors more regularly. Many thanks to you
I agree! I definitely prefer to paint outside. But we have too many months of cold, wet, awful winter 😆 gotta do what I can on days I can’t stand to be outside

So as someone that has aphantasia i can say i NEED references 😂 annoys the crap outta me when ppl say draw from your imagination. There's nothing wrong with my imagination, i can think it i just cant see it to even try drawing it
I can’t visualize in my head. I think of concepts, the way I draw is very methodical and I need multiple layers of sketching, otherwise I can’t tell what I’m doing or it’s wonky, I need to build that structure to make a successful drawing
I hope I don't come across as a negative person, but I've tried doing all this stuff many times, and it made me absolutely hate painting. I even stopped painting for years because my throught was "well, I can't do all those quick little intuitive sketches, I can't force myself to use big brushes for everything, I don't like the impressionistic don't worry about the details look, so I am not an artist, because I hate every second of it, and you are supposed to enjoy it." Everything they tell you not to do is the only way I found any kind of freedom, liberation, and enjoyment in art. Unfortunately, it makes it hard to connect to other artists, who all seem to benefit from everything you're saying in this video. I am glad it helps you work through it to create art though, I will never say it's a bad thing, just doesn't seem to work with my annoying brain.
Like I said, we are all different! And each of us has to try something to find out if it works for us ☺️ I’m glad you found something that works for you!
You are not alone. I feel the same, and it frustrates me over and over again. If I could live again from start, I would educate myself to restoration of paintings. I enjoy immensely when I sometimes have to repair or patch some picture or object: To carefully choose the right colors and work painstakingly slowly point by point. I'm euphoric and zen and forget everything else. And I'm quite skillful and patient doing that, I think. I admire all the artists so much but I just don't have the courage or frenzy that is needed. It's my eternal dilemma. I would need therapy first to be able to go to art therapy.
