    1. Use fresh paint.
    2. Use a limited palette.
    3. Use synthetic brushes (link in description)
    4. Adjust consistency from thin to thick (start like watercolor)
    Bonus #1. Cover larger areas first.
    5. Focus on contrast (when you see it's losing its shape)
    Bonus #2. If your values are good, you can go crazy with the colors.
    Bonus #3. *JUST KEEP TRYING*
    Bonus #4. Try using different types of paper.

      peacelrose this is probably a late response but if you are unsure what paper to use I can recommend the (I think it‘s called) Selection Block by Hahnemühle. It has 12 different sheets of paper with different types of texture and ..grams (sorry I forgot the word lol I think it was from 200-600) so you can try out which paper you like best (-: Hope this helped

    It always amazes me how some artists pick up a brush and they somehow KNOW where the color is supposed to go, like look how she paints the skin. While I'm here doing a billion layers of light washes and still ends up with a clown the moment I add the blushes

    This was great Arleesha! I'm not a beginner, but always love hearing tips and process guidance articulated well. I'm on the other end of the gouache spectrum. I treat it as transparent as I can and add opacity only where I need it but I totally get and appreciate the chunky painterly approach too. Oh and this: "Just keep trying! Allow your self to make dozens and dozens of bad art pieces. Quantity is so important." YES! Wisdom you have young Jedi!

At the time I had only heard of gouache maybe 2 times before and instead of watching tutorials I just hopped right in. I've never had trouble with dry or wet gouache and I think it's one of my favorites because of how it can be opaque or transparent and it's a rlly interesting texture! It's a great paint and I totally recommend!!

    I just got my first guache set yesterday, so I'm watching this late. :) But what you said about doing lots and lots of drawings pinged with me. I'm a writer in my day job, and I just recently told a bunch of students that you learn a *lot* more by writing six stories than you do by writing one story and rewriting it five times. Early stage writers (and a lot of more experienced writers who should know better) agonize over single stories for ages and ages. I guess it's good(? LOL!) to know that it's not only writers who have that problem. :) But yes, more new work is much better than lots and lots of reworking.

    Love the noses! I just did my first gouache painting! had no clue what I was doing. I found the contrast thing to be very true and the values. But consistency was my biggest struggle! I mainly work with watercolor so gouache was a bit strange and not knowing how thick or thin it was suppose to be but in the end my portrait turned out ok! I think I ended up going back and forth thin thick thin. On my swatch sampling I liked the more watercolor effects than the opaque. I will have to see if you have a video on how to use gouache with watercolor?! I love Chris Hong!!

    Thank you for the video! I really love watching you work in opaque mediums, the painterly style you have is so nice :)
    I started with opaque mediums like acrylic and gouache, but turned to watercolors to let go of perfectionism. With opaque mediums, I could never stop fiddling with my work, because you can just keep layering without consequence. You don't really get that option with watercolors, you have to know when to stop. I'm still trying to get the hang of it. Gouache is much more natural for me, but it's very difficult for me to loosen up with it.

    • @artprof

    So excited for this video! 🤗 These are amazing tips! Especially using synthetic brushes. Water control is the main thang about gouache in my opinion. Fancy watercolor brushes might even do more harm than good with gouache! I’ve thought the same darn thing! And gouache works well on so many kinds of paper. As long as it’s not thin. There aren’t the same issues of needing pigment to bloom exactly right as with watercolor. With gouache you just slap it on. I actually find it easier to use dried (rewet) paint but I have a ton of little idiosyncrasies about how I rewet it that would be so hard to explain and I wouldn’t have been able to do it that way a year ago.

    • @artprof
      @artprof 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      At first it never occurred to me to keep old colors on a palette and then to rewet them, you can actually save time because you can save good colors you liked!

I'm really enjoying the pallet so far and I've already taken it to my local coffee shop and painted there, it's not too heavy but it is kind of an awkward medium between big and compact. It is a pretty good quality and I definitely recommend it because you get a big bang for your buck. Sorry for the huge paragraph

      Hey nice! It's okay for pieces to go wrong sometimes, all part of learning either how a medium works or how to fix issues that may come up later, and it's also okay to stop if your not vibein w/it

    Good vid. I just find it hard to get the values right, bc it dries different values. Tbh digital & acrylic are a lot easier so I agree with you that if you feel like gouache isn't working, try another medium. Now, I only use gouache very thin or over top of watercolors

    This has been SO INCREDIBLY helpful. THANK YOU! Thank you so very much. I really appreciate this, I've been playing around with gouache for the last few months on and off, and while I absolutely love it, I've been a bit frustrated coming from an oil painting background, but ALL of your tips are super helpful. I found myself going "ohhhhh!!!!!! I seeeeeee!" a lot! so, again, thank you!
    PS. you've got such a soothing and calming voice! It's very nice to listen to! Reminds me of Georgia Hardstark from one of my all time favorite podcasts, 'My Favorite Murder'.

    Super helpful as I have still been just dipping my toes into gouache and want to more confidentially work with the medium. I'm definitely more used to the dried palettes and can understand how using them after they've dried can be harder to gauge for mixing/water ratios. Now that you are more accustom with gouache do you find pre poured palettes to be easier to use or do you still work predominantly fresh out of tube? I've also seen quite a lot of artists who use flat or angled brushes with gouche and wondered if that is useful to copy when starting. I think a big issue I've had was trying to use my normal, very soft, round watercolor brushes which seem to be harder to control with gouache.

    Also one thing to keep in mind even though watercolor brushes and synthetic can be interchangeable, gouche is a bit more abrasive on the brush so I recommend to have your watercolor and gouche brushes separate because you want to keep the pointy tips for your watercolor brushes

    I just want to say, 2 things in here helped me IMMENSLY, before this I barely knew anything about gouache a cheap set was given to me so I tried to treat it as watercolor and put it in pans, always getting frustrated that it would be so muddy and watery. I saw this video and after 4 failed portrait attempts, i armed myself with iced tea a Pinterest reference, red blue yellow (and white, all straight out of the tube) and season 2 of Brooklyn 99. What followed was the best portrait I’ve painted no joke. From now on I will probably always do them this way, if you are having trouble, try just using the primaries, simple reference and don’t stress about getting all the details in :)

      Hello! :) Question: So would you put your gouache in pans again, or this time you will use it straight from the tubes? Is your palette plastic or ceramic? I hope you don't mind the questions, I just ordered gouache and have no experience.

    • @roease6674
      @roease6674 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Cons Bulaquena i got arteza gouache after I used the older ones. I haven’t put them in pans and I don’t intend to, as for pallets I just use what I have around me (which probably isn’t wise) I’ve used a ceramic plate I made a couple of years back and a piece of glass from a frame.
