2023 was the year I picked up gouache properly, and it was your blog posts and videos that really helped me make my decisions on colours! So thank you for that! Gouache really is such a rewarding medium, and it teaches you so much about painting. I'm usually a get all the colours kind of girl, but thanks to your advice I've stuck to a smaller amount so I mix most of my colours, and that's been so rewarding too. And the paper thing you mention, so true. Gouache's unpickiness has allowed me to use up papers I didn't love too much, and create beautiful pieces regardless!
The cheapest thing everyone can do: learn colour theory! You actually don't need every colour available in tubes... learn how to mix colours with the primary colours and you're good to go. Started my gouache journey with a set from Schmincke that included only white, black, cyan, magenta and yellow. And tbh this set taught me so much about how to mix colours and gouache itself.
If you keep your studio pallet in a zip lock baggie, it stays wet for ages!! No need for anything special. I spray my paints with a bit of water after every session and I’m good to go for the next session!
loved hearing all your advice. FYI - The clear plastic sheet (or perspex is what I actually use) is the best and fantastic. If i want a white palette I put a white piece of paper underneath the clear and I have a white palette. if i want a grey palette I put a grey piece of paper underneath, black etc and so on. you can put a beige piece of paper underneath your clear one and then you have the beige palette you want
I LOVE that you are emphasizing a limited palette. I got lost in watercolors with too many colors and I intend to not repeat that mistake with gouache!
Your video inspired me to clean out a watercolor palette I wasn’t using and make a dry gouache palette instead! I’ve been avoiding painting because it’s just a commitment to set everything all up and I hope this makes it easier to do more often!
I started out painting with acrylic gouache and I had the same issues keeping mixed paint fresh. I made my own stay wet palette with folded kitchen roll with water poured on top (not sprayed, you want it totally soaked through) then I put greaseproof paper on that which Americans apparently call parchment but it comes from the supermarket not an art shop. Works fine for several days if you keep rewetting the paper towel but the greaseproof paper can tear anyway I didn't like it and now use mini glass bottles instead. I don't use any palette now but mix any paint i need straight in the mini half ounce pot. Colours keep for months. Way more practical. My big complaint about acrylic gouache (and it applies to regular designer gouache too, I've heard) is that so many of the colours have poor or middling lightfastness when truly permanent alternatives are available. I'm talking about naphthol red PR9 and PR112 for example when pyrrole red PR254 is known to last far better. My expensive Holbein paints use pyrazolone orange PO13 which only usually crops up in craft paints but not in artist's colours because it's so nonlightfast. I know some people say they don't care, but I frame my best stuff and stick it on the wall so yes i want lightfast colours, especially when I'm paying top dollar for them!
To clean a stained plastic palette a melamine sponge (Mr. Clean Magic Eraser) works wonderfully. Just moisten the sponge and rub it across the surface. It has always taken all the stains out for me. I have also tried sample product from Turners that is designed to clean palettes - “Turner Palette Cleaner” that works well also. I just found that I always have magic eraser sponges on hand so it’s one less thing I need to buy. Hope this helps! Thank you Sarah for all your hard work you put into your videos. Your attention to detail and your teaching style is so appreciated! Thank You!
Thanks for the tip! All my plastic palettes are stained. I use staining gouache and watercolor on them. I also don't thoroughly clean it after each use because I'm lazy lol.

Really enjoying the video but just had to stop part way to say that I use vintage square or rectangular enamelware lids / trays as palettes - they are wonderful to mix on (I'm not a fan of plastic trays) and are lighter than the ceramic. Bonus is that I can also attach paintboxes, water dishes, or anything else I want using magnets. I have a variety of sizes, all white with either blue or black edges.
Supply videos and discussions are always so fun to watch 😊. Gouache is rather pricey where I live no matter what brand I choose so I end up buying a little bit from each brand and wait for sales.

Your videos and sound advice is definitely one of the reasons I am becoming more and more interested in gouache. Thank you so much for your very valuable and much appreciated videos -I find your work absolutely stunning.
Thank you - this was super helpful! I agree with you about the limited palette. When I first tried gouache, I got the 24 Himi set, and while I didn’t mind using the paint, I found that many colors to be so overwhelming that I never wanted to use it. I’ve since switched to tubes and have 8 colors, including white and black, and that is much more manageable!
17:52 The toothpaste just makes it worse. It scratches the surface and after that it will get even more tinted. Imo, the best is alcohol. The hygienic/sanitizing hand-spray is the best because that evaporates from the surface 100%. But I used the hand-gel version too. Only after that you have to wash the gel off with water. But the plastic will be totally white. Recently I discovered that mobile phone screen protectors cannot get tainted either so I simply applied them on the plastic mixing area like it was a phone screen. Now it's like ceramic. I used it successfully on one of my mixing trays BUT have not used it as often, so maybe over time it makes it worse That's also a great tip with the screen protectors. I think they make "glass" versions for ipad, which might work as a larger mixing area

Have you ever done a video where you paint a piece that you have done in the very beginning to see how far you have evolved with your art? Would love to see that. Besides that, love your work and videos. Your reviews are very helpful and its amazing to see how a complete landscape comes out of a white piece of paper within a short amount of time. Thank you :)
This is probably the closest th-cam.com/video/dbUrLbNIKNY/w-d-xo.html But I also do "repaint" of my first ever landscape painting every 4 years. I shared that on instagram instagram.com/p/CuzWkuNqQxW
I was giggling as I watched your palette evolution because I have made the same journey, literally all the same or similar palette setups over time 😂 I've also switched to mainly dried gouache for plein air (and couch painting in the next room lol) but I still use the plastic palette you started with @1:57, for in the studio, only I cut a sponge to fit the entire surface area of the tray, and cut palette paper to cover that. Then when I'm done I pop it back in the palette and store the whole thing like that. (Upside down basically - I wish I could post a photo!) It's become a pretty good little diy wet palette. Thank you for this and all your videos, Sarah! 💜
Thanks Sarah for sharing al those useful tips. I use greasproof or baking paper in my stay-wet palette. Its a lot cheaper and works well. Aso, magic sponge erasers are good for cleaning stained plastc palettes. I think they have a slightly abrasive quality. Love watching you paint, so inspiring!
Sarah, I just love your videos. You inspire confidence in your audience by showing us what artists really go through as they develop. That makes me feel more adventurous and willing to invest time and money in learning to paint. You are a blessing and a joy for this stressed out world. 🙏🏻☮️❤️🖖
Thank you so much! I know what it's like to stumble along as you find your path as an artist, and I always want to encourage others to keep playing and finding ways to enjoy the process as much as the results :)
Having midtone mixing surface is great regardless of paper color: the white of the paper makes it tricky to judge the values initially. For that reason I always do an underpainting with watercolor, and I prefer transparent mixing palettes that I can put on my gray table.
Thanks Sarah for such a comprehensive video. I'm just dipping my toes into Gouache and have found tons of good advice from your videos and website. Thanks so much for making it easy for us.
I literally have everything you showed except the beige sketchbook which I ordered. And I'm A watercolorist. 2024 is supposed to be my gouache year. I'm finding I get in my studio and just stare at my gouache while I'm painting with WC. But now that you've convinced me I can use it dry I think I have a little more courage. Also check out David R. Becker. He paints in one go and uses gouache with his watercolor all the time. So I don't see why I couldn't gradually adapt my palette. I've painted with all the other mediums and can't figure out why gouache feels so intimidating. Hoping the sketchbook will get me going. Thank you for sharing your work.
It is interesting to see how your process has changed over time. The palette info is very helpful and reflects the struggle we all have with the “perfect” set-up. I also wish there was a super lightweight porcelain version of that smaller stay wet palette because I just hate the feel of plastic. Thanks for sharing this video, I always learn so much from you😘
Thank you for this video with all of your gouache tips. I haven't been painting with gouache very long but I'm loving it! I found (through experimenting) that you can paint with gouache over acrylic gouache. I had a watercolor painting that just wasn't working for me, so I painted over it with black acrylic gouache (Turner) and used gouache over that and painted an Earth/Moon scene, from the famous photo by astronauts over the moon looking at Earth. It's my best gouache painting yet! ❤️
New follower here to say I really enjoy your videos! 😊 For tape, I use just any japanese style washi that I have lying around. Good tip I use is to put the tape on your jeans/clothes first and then to the paper. It will gather some dust/lint and wont stick too hard on the paper! 👍
There is a little masterson stay wet pallet. So I have the large and the small. The small one is perfect for grabbing on the go. Specially like I know we’re talking about squash here but if you’re doing a tiny oil or acrylic painting I have one for each of those.
Thank you for sharing your tips and tools! Btw I skipped over this video thinking I’d already watched it. The bottom edge of the thumbnail border is similar to the “already watched” bar on my smart tv. So glad I caught it on my TH-cam iphone app.
I had a couple of pages in my watercolor sketchbook that did not bring me joy, so I painted over them with some black gesso. A perfect time to try gouache for the first time! I picked up a small collection of paints, watched a bunch of your videos, and got started today. It’s very different to watercolors, but I am enjoying it. Thank you so much for sharing your deep knowledge.
This was an awesome video! I cant believe I've followed you through each and every one of these journeys! You are the complete reason I've fallen in love with gouache and it's my favorite medium ❤
It’s funny watching you talk about all these pallets because I have every single one that you have except for the grass one. And I even have more than that. I guess I’ve tried everything imaginable. I do kind of wanna whittle myself down to a couple and get rid of the rest because it’s sometimes choice overload.
Hi Sarah and tha k you. Its such a pleasure to hear you talking about your Journey and experience in this relaxed way that allows us to take whatever we need for our own Journey from it. :))
Great overview, Sarah, thank you! So excited to get my first gouache box (in transit now, I think) and dig in with what I’ve learned from you over the years 💙
I put beige cheap masking tape over the blue painters tape…to get rid of the colour but still have the ease of getting the tape off..as the cheap beige masking tape tears used by itself…no one said u can’t layer the tape and it works
Thanks Sarah! It's always great to hear your painting journey and your helpful tips. I'm actually painting while listening to you...not gouache, but a small oil painting that's not turning out like I like so I am just about done....I'm gonna call it done ✔️ 😊Take care.
I'm just starting out with gouache (to the point where I needed to check the spelling) and found your video both encouraging and informative. Thank you. Not that anyone will want to do this, but I made myself a great wet palette by using an 18-well airtight watercolor palette and then adding... wait for it... an ultrathin heavy absorbant menspad that I soaked and placed in the mixing area of the palette. Haven't used my gouache for two months (injured a shoulder) but the paint is still wet.
Thats one of the most relaxed videos you have done, such a good video, thanks Sarah. Still waiting for the pack to arrive so glad you havent started the course on You tube yet. I love Buff Titanium, I had no idea you could get it in Goache too. I cannot live without Lemon yellow and Turquoise either.
Very interesting, thank you for sharing all your thoughts, tips and tricks 🙏👍Can't wait to get started with the first box and tutorial! Your videos - besides the excellent content - are just so relaxing and a joy to watch. Beautifully made, so calm and just Aah! To me it always feels like having had half an hour of vacation... For cleaning stained palettes: I heard a drop of oil does the job. Have not tried it but I mean maybe it's worth a try for those having that problem 😊
I love this video! I admire your expertise, practicality, program and presentation. I painted with gouache when I was in high school, and put it away to pursue other interests. I’m close to 60 and have this sudden interest in the arts and all things creative. Your advice is invaluable and I plan to view your videos and absorb the content.
Great video and information in your newsletter so useful for beginners. I paint much like you and my palette is always a mess. In studio setting, I have 2 stay wet palettes, a small homemade one, and a larger Mastersons brand. Last year purchased the Cup Easels Superlite easel that I can attach to a tripod. It has its own palette wells with air tight lid and mixing tray (with option to buy additional ones to change out between watercolour and gouache). Works great and fits in my backpack. Can use it without the tripod, on my lap or picnic table. I’m thinking the Portable Painter palette with dry gouache would be good for international travel as even smaller setup. Thank you Sarah!
Thank you Sarah. Just getting into gouache. Have sold a few paintings in this medium, but have much to learn, and am so excited whenever I watch one of your videos.
Super informative. I used watercolor for several years and just found your channel. I’m currently planning to start with gouache, and you have helped so much. I love watching you paint, mix colors and enjoy the -recess. Thank you Sara.
I hadn't intended to try gouache at least for awhile, but I decided I wanted some white ... and then when I went to buy, the W&N Designer starter (6 colors) was half price so I have that. Except for white (snow and tuxedo cat markings and whiskers), I will wait a bit and work on watercolor/ink and wash but saved this video - thank you. All of the palette info is especially helpful to me. I thought I was overdoing it by buying 3 palettes so am feeling a bit better about that 🤣. I bought that same water bucket and at first thought it was 2 large ... put it away in a closet. Last week, tried it and am really liking it vs small water glasses.
Yesterday I had a "play day" ... made a database of my watercolors and noted which I will not replace, which I use ... enlightening to me! Then I got out the gouache and decided to play with color mixing. The starter set has primary red, primary blue, primary yellow, middle green, zinc white and ivory black. I spent a lot of time with red-blue-yellow and amazed myself at what I could mix! So, I now want to paint with it and have been reviewing all of your "beginner gouache" videos and blog posts. I don't need more supplies to play so am about ready to paint 🙂
Thank you for this video Sarah! I’m a newbie to gouache and your videos have been really helpful especially in choosing supplies! I recently got the 5-colour Holbein set because it’s really affordable where I live and had the colours you recommended. It’s SO much better than the cheap gouache set I got sometime back. It’s such a joy to paint with and I can’t wait to work more with it.
Haha that definitely happened to me, I bought a sealing wet gouache palette largely based on your old videos. Still haven't filled it 😆 I do love the Hahnemuhle washi, which I bought inspired by you as well, also I love Hahnemuhle paper. It's a bit hard to find in the US and I didn't see the plain kind, I do find the branding a little distracting!
Just thinking about starting this journey. Watching your vids/reading blog first. It’s making me excited to dive in but I’m also a bit nervous to start…I don’t have an art education but I do have a natural affection for colors and painting/drawing. Loving your content today
I've never heard of Stillman and Birn, nor have I seen/head anyone mention Daler Rowney Aquafine before, but it's so affordable. I might have to give it a go! Thanks again for another awesome video packed with great ideas.
Hullo Sarah, yep still watching videos and trying to catch up on your basics, I have always loved porcelain palettes, but I am clumsy and so I use enameled trays for mixing if I am going to be moving around. My porcelain palette is quite heavy and I try to leave it in one spot on my work surface. I recently purchased a few Meeden palettes and some small shallow porcelain cups for mixing paints. I used to use the palette papers for mixing when I was working at a design firm and they were very free with the Turners Design Gouache. They wanted us to have a clean work area for every job. So yep I have used gouache from the tube the most.
Thank you for all the wonderful information so that we can make more informed decisions about our supplies. I use the blue tape too, most of the time. Like you I never notice it. I assume it's because I started with blue tape.
I have to admit I’m a sketchbook junkie. Want to try the S&B Nova sketchbook in beige, but decided to fill the others I have first before purchasing that one. I currently use the S&B Beta A5 Portrait one mostly for travel because of the 140LB weight paper which is great for all mediums, both wet and dry. I like that it’s lightweight and can open flat for double page spread option. Also like watercolour pads that are coil bound for sketching and painting. Thanks Sarah! Again, you share so much expertise for beginners and those new to gouache or watercolour plein air painting.
Wow I love how your journey has evolved over the years! I still love my small square sealable palette with the collapsable cup for my gouache palette for both inside & outside. I also use the blue painters tape & the yellow more delicate tacky painters tape label Frogger Tape. I am noticing now that I too spend more money for the quality watercolor paper/blocks & sketchbooks. I also used a really cheap set of watercolor brushes for my gouache. W&N, M Graham are my favorite brands of paint, readily available in the States (USA). Thanks for sharing this updated version of your 2024 favorite Gouache Supplies.
Thank you so much Sarah! I've been learned a lot from you! The pallets, cleaning pallets, brushes, surfaces, different brands of gouaches! you're an amazing Gouache Artist, and I want to thank you, because I'm starting out, and for me, you have an important resources for gouache media, and I'm very thankful for all you do. 🥰🤍❤️🥰💞 I have Winsor and Newton gouache and recently get Turner gouache, and I'm in love of this gouaches! I've been trying the Strathmore papers, mix media, 300gm, black, and beige toned paper, and I loved it! And cold pressed and hot pressed watercolors papers too. And I buy a first pallet you have, the sealed one, because of your recommendation, and I loved it too. Many thanks!!!❤❤❤❤❤
Such a great video! I tried gouache for the first time in 2019, loved it and then completely abandoned it. I want to get back into it, because I miss this medium. But I feel so overwhelmed by everything! Last year I got myself some W&N Designer's gouache tubes after diving into your extensive reviews and the comparison videos and I really love this paint, but wow. Still don't know where to start, haha.
Hi. Thanks for the video. Very informative and fun to listen to you and all your different levels and stages of preference. I’m in Canada and a qouache that I really like here is Holbein have you ever tried it? Gorgeous Colors and lovely creamy texture.
Sarah..I saw that you have a box subscription for gouache . Would you recommend a new painter to gouache to possibly start that way, since it comes with brushes and some colors.
Great video! I can't wait to get your box. I will scrape off the channels on my portable painter, I wondered how you got the larger mixing surface. One question that you have addressed in a previous video but I don't recall the answer. How do you stop mold? Thanks.
You’re just the best 😊. Thank you for sharing your journey and your findings. I found myself in our local art store having a discussion with myself about which sketchbook you’d recommend, and you were correct. 🥴 Much appreciation 💜
What a wonderful and well rounded informational video you have presented. I have not yet used gouache paint but am thinking about using it in combination with watercolor. Thank you for sharing😊

I know what you mean, I've done that too, it's a good solution
Thanks Sarah for sharing al those useful tips. I use greasproof or baking paper in my stay-wet palette. Its a lot cheaper and works well. Aso, magic sponge erasers are good for cleaning stained plastc palettes. I think they have a slightly abrasive quality. Love watching you paint, so inspiring!
Oh that's good to know, someone gave me one of those so I'll try it
17:11 not sure if you've tried an enamel butcher tray but they are a great alternative to a ceramic tray that is much lighter! Love them.
So glad I found you again Sarah! I’m enjoying catching up.
Waiting impatiently for my first gouache box as well!!! Can’t wait. I know it’s on its way.
Thanks, Sarah! What a great summary and helpful overview. 🖌️🖌️
Having midtone mixing surface is great regardless of paper color: the white of the paper makes it tricky to judge the values initially. For that reason I always do an underpainting with watercolor, and I prefer transparent mixing palettes that I can put on my gray table.
This is an awesome video.. Thank you Sarah, for all the fantastic information! It truly is jam-packed w useful tips and ideas! ♡
Thanks Sarah for such a comprehensive video. I'm just dipping my toes into Gouache and have found tons of good advice from your videos and website. Thanks so much for making it easy for us.
This is incredibly useful information. Thank you.
I think gouache is a very "friendly" medium, especially if you are already familiar with watercolor, acrylic and even oil. I hope you have fun!
It is interesting to see how your process has changed over time. The palette info is very helpful and reflects the struggle we all have with the “perfect” set-up. I also wish there was a super lightweight porcelain version of that smaller stay wet palette because I just hate the feel of plastic. Thanks for sharing this video, I always learn so much from you😘
My gouache box has shipped...I am so excited!
Just got my Craftamo box in the mail! I’m in Chicago. SO EXCITED!!!
Oh interesting! Thanks for letting me know, I might update the thumbnail
I plan to use the Masterson Sta-Wet Handy Palette, 8.5in x 7in.
Aha! The very video i needed this weekend!!
I love these art materials updates. Thanks for sharing your experiences and knowledge.
Im using my pastel pencil tin box as gouache palette and mixing tray...after removing pencils etc
❤❤❤ Wonderful and so informative!!!
Thank you Sarah!!!
Fantastic update, thank you Sarah ❤
Amazon video, as usual. And super interesting materials to investigate!
Really comprehensive video!! Thanks so much.
Great information on gouache painting, I have learnt such a lot. Thank you Sarah
Love this so helpful your work is beautiful - thank you!
Yeah, Sarah, you didn't explain enough! 🤣I love your videos, I suck it up like a sponge and I learn so much! THANK YOU! I'm so excited for my box 😻
brb making another 3 hour video so I can explain more
Thx Sarah for sharing ur knowledge! Enjoying ur book - Sketching Scotland! It’s wonderful! Keep the videos coming!
Thanks so much!
Thank you. Now l kan get started!
That's great, Holbein has a wonderful consistency
Haha that definitely happened to me, I bought a sealing wet gouache palette largely based on your old videos. Still haven't filled it 😆 I do love the Hahnemuhle washi, which I bought inspired by you as well, also I love Hahnemuhle paper. It's a bit hard to find in the US and I didn't see the plain kind, I do find the branding a little distracting!
Omg I also LOVE Buff Titanium ❤
You’re tips are always useful 😊
Brilliant. So much detail! I'm humbled.
Thank you very much Sarah!! 👍
Thank you for this video. I needed this! I am just now getting to the time when I want try using gouach along with my watercolors.😊
do you have a gouache guide for how to practice some basic skills in landscapes?
You are so fascinating and informative. Thank you Sarah
So outstanding- enormous thanks. Can you tell us about your brushes
Thank you for a very informative video! Your love for gouache is inspiring 😄
Thank you for all the wonderful information so that we can make more informed decisions about our supplies. I use the blue tape too, most of the time. Like you I never notice it. I assume it's because I started with blue tape.
this was wonderful , Sarah .. sooo many different ways to go with our setups .. thx !! Norakag 👍👍
Thank you Sarah! ❤️
Lovley video❤️ your eyes are very beautiful they almost look purple
So much I for and great tips! Thank you.
What a wonderful and well rounded informational video you have presented. I have not yet used gouache paint but am thinking about using it in combination with watercolor. Thank you for sharing😊
I really enjoy using it with my watercolor. I shared a video about using watercolor with white gouache, a good strategy to get started th-cam.com/video/YNLk3i5lCu4/w-d-xo.html
