Hey VaatiVidya do you think that we could have writing competition instead of an art competition. Dark Souls was founded on telling the lore through writing and story building. one of the things that I do for fun is build flavor text for the stories I write. I think that could be very interesting to build items for this cut content.

I always thought the vanguard demons were the last giants in the world. Their heads resemble the head of the 6th archstone guys and to my knowledge the vanguards are never explained and are just there, much like how the giants are never elaborated on.

    • @pious83
      @pious83 4 ปีที่แล้ว +58

Interesting to note a Vanguard featured in the cut content too.
Plus, there is more subtext to the Giants Archstone than any of the others. All the others depict a ruler in regal or majestic pose. The Giant appears with wrists crossed, as though restrained. With two human sized figures holding swords on either side. Like they were guarding a prisoner.

    • @zachbetz6326

Their lore implies that they were the ones who were on the front lines when the demons attacked the people of Bolitaria and even led the demons in those attacks on the kingdom. But that’s it for their story in the complete game.

hey Vaati, incredible video as always! It just occurred to me, “he discovered a lynchpin temple IN a hinterlands of icy mountains.” I learned that the nexus is a floating monolith above the Old One, as shown by concept art of the “Nexus outside.” Many people have come to accept the theory that the Nexus exists outside time & space.
But, how would King Allant discover the Nexus? Since you can exist in the Nexus in human form, I would argue that there must be a physical location of the Nexus somewhere. I’m speculating that the 6th Archstone is not included because the Nexus is located above the Old One, who is slumbering atop the remains of the kingdom of the 6th Archstone! There was no one to slay the Archdemons and save the land of the Giants, no one to lull the Old One back to sleep. Thus, it was destroyed by demons and consumed by the Fog. Forgotten forever by the extinction of all the indigenous souls who “perceived” it.
With the ancient land of the Giants crushed and swallowed by the Fog, their Archstone was destroyed. As a result, the 6th Archstone within the Nexus imploded and collapsed, barring travel to the land of the Giants because the land is forever lost to the Old One.

Good day Vaati! What do you think of this theory? I'm interested in your opinion.
I have a theory "who is the furtive pygmy"
"Then, from the Dark, They Came, and found the Souls of Lords within the flame. Nito, the first of the dead, the Witch of Izalith and her Daughters of Chaos, Gwyn, the Lord of Sunlight, and his faithful knights, and the furtive pygmy, so easily forgotten."
Each character shown in cinematic is very important in Dark Souls. And we met Gwyn and killed him. Like Nito and the Witch of Isalith. But where is the furtive pygmy? I don't believe that he wasn't shown for 3 games. What Miyazaki says about him:
"It isn't written anywhere, but, the image is something like humanity's ancestor. He found the Lord Soul, fragmented it and humanity are like the fragments of it. Kinda like an ancestor, yeah. So the descendants, the humans, have a part of that Lord Soul."
This means that the pygmy is the creator of mankind. But what is human? Humanity description: 'This black sprite is called humanity, but little is known about its true nature. If the soul is the source of all life, then what distinguishes the humanity we hold within ourselves?"
That means only human have humanity and humanity is a main part of human. Without humanity human is no longer human. And humanity is a part of the Lord Soul of furtive pygmy, pygmy is the first human! But why is it called "pygmy", not a man? "Pygmy" is a mistranslation.
In the Japanese version furtive pygmy is called "小人" , it translates as "small stature" and "low social status". Miyazaki says the second version is correct. It means "pygmies" and humans are the same.
Elizabeth and Marvellous Chester call Manus "primeval human". "Primeval" can mean "first", and furtive pygmy is first human, Manus is the furtive pygmy. But also "primeval" can mean "ancient", one of many. But is every ordinary human reborn after death as Nashandra, Elana, Nadalia and Alsanna? Too powerful for the average human, isn't it? Therefore, I believe that the "first" is more correct. Also soul of Manus description " Soul of Manus, Father of the Abyss. This extraordinary soul is a viscous, lukewarm lump of gentle humanity*."* As I said humanity is part of Pygmy's soul. But what Kaathe said about furtive pygmy:
"After the advent of Fire, the ancient Lords found the three souls. But your progenitor found a fourth, unique soul(soul of Manus description - "extraordinary"). The Dark Soul. Your ancestor claimed the Dark Soul, and waited for Fire to subside. And soon, the flames did fade, and only Dark remained. Thus began the age of men, the Age of Dark. However... Lord Gwyn trembled at the Dark. Clinging to his Age of Fire, and in dire fear of humans"
That means that Lord Soul of the furtive pygmy is a Dark Soul. "Dark Souls", yeah? And Amnesiac Lapp said:(about Ringed City) "Where the pygmies who found the dark souls at the dawn of fire reside."
It means Dark Soul in the Ringed City
The furtive pygmy has a Dark Soul
Furtive Pygmy in the Ringed City!
But where? Gael killed the Pygmy Kings for a Dark Soul. This means that furtive pygmy is pygmy king, and because in Dark Souls 1 cinematic showed one pygmy and Miyazaki said about one pygmy, and statue which depicts Gwyn giving a crown to one Pygmy. only one of the pygmy kings is the furtive pygmy!
After defeating Gael, I explored this location. 8 corpses of kings, including the guy who crawled to Filianore. And I also looked at thrones. Only 8. Between the two central thrones there is a place for the central, ninth throne, as if the throne had been here before. And I remembered the pygmy from the start location of the Ringed City, "so easily forgotten."
He told me to awaken Filianore, and I didn't expect the destruction of the Ringed City! This is a lie.. Now I understand that he was Pygmy Lord. Long hair, the royal clothes and the same voice actor - Ramon Tikaram. Other Kings are loyal to Filianore, he hates the gods, this is the same as the words of Kaathe. Why doesn't he have a crown? Why was his throne removed? Such details can tell a story. The Awakening of Filianore destroyed the city, which was a prison, and this gave him a chance to escape from the city. That is why the king lies on the ground. He just waits for Ashen One at the entrance to the city, to say to him to awaken Filianore. If we defeat the spears of the Church, then he leaves!
He is the furtive pygmy! And the last detail: Pygmy King on concept art have a pendant... And Manus was looking for a broken pendant? Seems different, but when pendant was broken it could change. Hmm....

I got the Demon's Souls strategy guide. There's a bit of lore written here about the Northern Lands, might help the artists. It reads:
"The Northern Lands were once home to the race of mighty giants. They lived in relative peace with the rest of Boletaria until the thick, colorless fog swept in and blanketed their domain. The Northern Lands were the first to succumb to the spread of Demons, and in an effort to contain the madness, Boletaria sent hundreds of thousands of its finest knights to this great kingdom to fend off the threat. The effort was for naught, and the Archstone connected to this land was later destroyed as last-ditch attempt to contain the chaos. It did not succeed."

    • @carlosfandinosoto8506
      @carlosfandinosoto8506 4 ปีที่แล้ว

Just like Vaati said, "relative peace" would probably mean the giants didn't really get along with the rest of Boletaria or the other way around. But then again, Boletaria helped them a lot apparently when fighting the demons.
But if they were mighty giants, why would they need the help of puny humans?

the image in the archstone somewhat makes it feel like the giants are conquered, and maybe subservient to humans: "the giant's hands are crossed and extended don, reminiscent of how a prosoners hand would be binded, and the soldiers have their weapons risen and ready and are facing toward the "prisoner from each side of their supposedly binded hands, as if they're trapping and guarding her. While there are also guards depicted in the Boletaria archstone, those have their spears pointing up and not ready, in common "guard the king" fashion, also, the king depicted has a shield and sword of him, further suggesting that he is being protected, and not imprisoned.
Maybe the process of "discovering" the temple and "adquiring" soul arts actually involved conquering and looting it. Plus, if there are a bunch of hero knights alive in boletaria at the same time, it stands to reason that they be involved in some kind of recent war.

You would be able to see background ares with signs of monsters or caves. The shot would be taken looking forward from a rivalling mountain, to show properly incorporate the cope of the area. Finally in the for-ground as well, probably taking up perhaps 1/9th - 1/16th of the screen in proportion, would be the back of the Frontier Lord himself, looking out on this great land of cold, and magic. (the sky would also be filled with something similar to the northern lights, to really push that feeling of this area containing the source of magic.

the fight in the opening cutscene could be the initial outbreak of demons and the giant's servants trying to stem the tide, the giants themselves could be conduits that were transformed into the demons due to their closeness with nature as the natural order was upset or they could still be in their temple, murdered do Allant could access the great old one and magic items related.

I was curious and looked into the pastebin details for this contest. I know this turned into a bit of a rant but as a freelance artist I hate stuff that takes advantage of artists. If having your work potentially "featured" is enough of a reward for you then pay no mind, but if you're an artist just starting out, or are a little inexperienced, some of this might be helpful.
This "contest" sounds an awful lot like spec work to me. Create artwork for free without a guarantee of being paid and also automatically give away licensing rights for the artwork to be used in a book just by submitting your work. Nothing against anyone who sees value in spending the time to create some cool artwork, but I can almost guarantee if your work is good enough to win you shouldn't be doing work for free with the HOPES of being paid. Before you enter do yourself a favor and take a few minutes to research speculative work before potentially spending hours creating and getting emotionally invested in contests like this. Contests like this aren't horrible, if you win or place near the top, but for the vast majority of people entering it's a waste of time when their work doesn't get selected. If you're cool with that risk and confident your work will win, then great. Good luck and I wish you the best.
Try to think about it from his perspective though. With this contest he gets tons of free artwork and can pick and choose the best pieces and use them in his book at a later date. He avoids commissioning an artist to create the work, and avoids paying that artist licensing fees to use their work (simply by saying "you are giving permission for me to potentially include your art in an art book I'm endeavoring to make." That's just bs, get paid if someone sees value and wants to use your work). Take this and multiply it by every unique piece of art in the book. The book will be filled with amazing artwork for sure, but its artwork he also got for pennies on the dollar compared to what it would cost to actually commission a good artist to create the work. The book is then pure profit on his end after paying to have the book to be printed. In this scenario he's a middle man profiting off hard working artists who have more than likely not been compensated as they rightly should have been for their time and efforts.
Spec works hurts artists, and the creative profession as a whole, because it devalues art and the people who live off their work while others profit.

if you are living off of your artwork, you should not be competing in a competition which the top prize is a measly 400 dollars. the exposure is the best part about this, if you're worried about money, you might as well just not compete right?
people have jobs for a reason man, professional artists most likely arent going around looking for small prize pool competitions, and if you are starting out, you need a portfolio built up to be able to receive a steady stream of art requests right? in what way is this, 'taking advantage of the artists'. people who are starting off should be happy to be able to be put in front of millions right? and i guess if your art isn't good enough you wont get exposure, but that isn't the fault of the person hosting the competition, that is the result of the free market, right?
idk, I'm no artist, but it sure seems like this is a great deal, especially for an aspiring artist who truly has what it takes to make it big.
not like its some business ran competition, just a guy who wants to give a platform to fellow souls lovers, or at least that's my take

Look at it differently, if he gets enough quality entries from people who don't turn down spec work and find some kind of value in doing this then the bar was never hire enough to commission an artist. There's a reason video game programmers are some of the if not the absolute lowest paid programmers around.

@@waterpups10 Yes I'm kind of bothered by the fact that vaati will make thousands of dollars on this book while the artists will make at most $400 and that's only the people at the #1 spot, with the top 10s making 150 or less and much of his book being comprised of works of people who will make $0 on the book. It feels weird that one member of the community can just put together the works of 100s of people and make bank while most of them get nothing. Idk.

    • @cannibalismshouldbelegal2941
      @cannibalismshouldbelegal2941 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

@@Nicolas-fo8qd this is a pretty small brain take ngl, the artists are getting free publishing and a chance at a cash prize at only the cost of their free time. Its not like putting together and selling the book is without cost, and surely having your name put into a book for free simply because you had a good time making some art about a game you love is more than enough compensation.
thousands of dollars isn't making bank man, there is a cost to do these things, and i don't think making a few thousand off of an art book is that big a deal, especially when you consider the audience that he is putting these artists in front of, at only the cost of their free time.
its not like they are getting nothing out of competing, there is a clear benefit in publicity, and a chance at winning money if the art is judged well. and in all honesty, if i was into making art like this, i think i would be perfectly fine with a small cash prize if my art is being put up in front of a million people, many of which are likely looking for artists to the commission.
well anyways, tldr: its not like he's making a fuck ton of money off of it, and in all honesty the publicity is worth more than the cash prize, or even just the free time required to produce the art.

The giants from Dark Souls 2 are definitely the same giants from the Northern Lands in Demon Souls since their faces bear a striking resemblance to the Old One's gaping maw.
As if the giants are somewhat the successful child offspring between humanity and the Old One.
It is also to note that those faceless, black, armless figures look alike with the "Giant" tree in DS2 & DS3 that interacts with the seed of a Giant tree.
Why does an entity exist that has the body of a human, the face of the Old One and can live on as a tree as though their souls persist in the manifestation of a memory as in DS2?
    -
That sequence where you go back in time (proving they coven some power of the Old One) could be a way of insight via the seed of the Giant Tree + it's resembling appearance.
Also considering we never got to explore the fabled 'distant land of the giants'. All these coincidences just lines up too perfectly.
Did the giants conquer the old lands in Demon Souls? Did humanity merely re-emerge in a completely different land from that of Demon Souls?
Remember. The giants "crossed the sea and landed ON THE *_NORTHERN SHORES_* of Drangleic" in their invasion.
