I used to own an original 80gb model from late 2008 that didn't have backwards compatibility with PS2 disks and it unfortunately gave out after overheating due to heavy usage over the years and now I currently have the 160gb CECH-3001A slim model manufactured in early 2012 along with a 250gb CECH-4301B super slim model manufactured in mid 2015 as a backup. I normally use my CECH-3001A slim model but during the hottest months of the year when I want to use a console with the lowest power draw and heat output, I'll pull out my CECH-4301B super slim model. I could've kept my original model after repairing it but even with the expertise, I decided it just wasn't worth the hassle to maintain.
As an avid PS3 gamer with years of experience and expertise repairing and maintaining every model (original, slim, and super slim), here's how I'd rank the models based on reliability from most reliable to least reliable: 1. Super slims (late 2012 - mid 2017 when the PS3 was officially discontinued): These models might not be the most visually appealing in terms of design but these models have a solid reputation as rugged machines because they have the lowest power draw and the fewest moving parts. Less moving parts and less power draw = less chance for hardware related failures. These are the top choice models for those who are least concerned about the design and just want a solidly reliable PS3 to power on and play a collection of PS3 titles. 2. CECH-25xx slims (mid 2010 - mid 2011) and CECH-30xx slims (late 2011 - late 2012 when the super slim launched): These are the gold standard slim models for those who don't like the super slims. These have the lowest power draw of all the slims and unlike the earlier slims (CECH-20xx and CECH-21xx), CECH-25xx slims and CECH-30xx slims have a Blu-Ray drive controller embedded into the motherboard to increase reliability with disk based games and reduce the risk of Blu-Ray drivers going sour and eventually crapping out. 3. CECH-21xx slims (early 2010 - mid 2010): First PS3 slim models to replace the notoriously unreliable NEC/TOKIN capacitors for the GPU with tantalum capacitors. The power draw for these models are lower than the launch edition slims (CECH-20xx). These are the last PS3 models with the Blu-Ray daughterboard paired to the motherboard. These models aren't a terrible choice by any means but the later slims (CECH-25xx and CECH-30xx) are just a bit more durable and rugged than these. 4. CECH-20xx slims (late 2009 - early 2010): Launch edition slim models. These are the least recommended slim models because they have the highest heat output due to a fairly high power draw and these models are the most prone to overheating and issues with the Blu-Ray disk driver crapping out in the long run. These models also have the 65 nm GPU that are present in the latest original models from late 2008 to late 2009 when the CECH-20xx slims launched. Another reason these earliest slims aren't recommended is the fact these models still contain the NEC/TOKIN capacitors, which also factor into why these models are the least reliable slim models. 5. Original models (late 2006 - late 2009 when the PS3 slim launched): No surprises here. These models have the highest power draw and heat output and the earliest models from 2006 to mid 2007 with backwards compatibility with PS2 disks are the most susceptible to the rare but dreaded yellow light of death (YLOD) because they contain the infamously unreliable 90 nm GPU and the 90 nm CPU. If you commit to purchasing a PS3 model from 2006 to mid 2007 that contains backwards compatibility with PS2 disks, it requires lots of patience and expertise to keep these in the best functional conditions in the long run. As time passes by, I'm even increasingly seeing later original models without any backwards compatibility with PS2 disks from late 2007 to 2009 overheat and break down from hardware related failures so definitely be careful about purchasing the original PS3 models. If you have PS2 titles you wish to play but want a reliable PS3, it's better to just get a PS2 in a good functional condition along with a heavily reliable late slim/super slim PS3.
@@GHOSTLINK144 yeah and another thing I'd like to add here is that for those who want to mod their PS3s with installation of custom firmware (CFW), CFW cannot be installed on the following models (must use HAN or HEN): All super slim models CECH-30xx slim models CECH-25xx slim models manufactured from April 2011 and later CFW cannot be installed on PS3s manufactured from April 2011 and later dates because that's when Sony found out about CFW and updated the encryption key (metldr2) and the MinVerChk to version 3.60 to completely disable installation of CFW.
