    The bmw struggle on the first stint because they have high tyre pressure in quali to set a one lap banger, if they have high pressure they don't have to spend 3 laps Warming the tyres up so when they come to the race they rely on defending the pole in the first stint although they can't keep fast times up

    @28:25 - Torque doesn't mean jack and the turbocharged engines probably have a wider powerband anyway, that's one of the greatest benefits that comes with turbocharging.

    • @RZM_Valkyrie

      Torque is used to push the car in lower revs but power is used in higher revs

    • @PistonAvatarGuy
      @PistonAvatarGuy 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@RZM_Valkyrie No, it's all power.

    • @dcs002
      @dcs002 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@PistonAvatarGuy I looked this up and studied it until I understood it. Torque is independent of time. Power = torque x RPM x a constant (the constant depends on which units you use). Simple algebra says therefore torque = power/(RPM x constant). Since power = torque x RPM x constant, power must be specified at a given RPM. Change the RPM and you change the power, but only if you don't also change the torque to compensate. But the reverse is not necessarily true because you can set RPM = 0 and still have torque. (Think of how a torque wrench works. It measures torque when the wrench and bolt are stationary.) But if you set RPM to 0, you have no power at all. (The mathematics might not make sense here because of the units used and what exactly they represent - work vs power - but power contains a term for time, which cancels in the 2nd equation.) Torque is measured in Newton-meters (independent of time and therefore motion). Rotary power = torque per second (torque per unit-time, dependent on time).
      Here's a cool example that helped me wrap my head around it: Complex propeller aircraft work by converting power differences to pure torque differences by maintaining RPM regardless of power (throttle) setting. The propellers are spun at a constant speed (RPM). That speed is recommended by the manufacturer as the most efficient for power or range or wear life or whatever. (For a race car, it would be the middle of the power band.) The prop speed is maintained automatically by keeping the prop speed levers in a fixed position and adjusting the throttle. The prop speed levers cause the pitch of the props to be changed automatically, and therefore the torque needed to turn them at a constant speed. So you leave the speed levers constant and adjust the throttle (which changes power). The prop RPM remains constant, therefore the only thing that changes is torque, because changing power at a constant RPM therefore changes torque. This torque is converted to thrust by the varying pitch of the propellers.
      In practical terms, for cars, yeah, torque can usually be used to mean high power at low RPM, but it's more informative (though still not completely correct) to say higher torque represents a wider power band.
      Personally, I'd prefer a torquey engine with no turbo-lag. Nothing is free, and the high-end power from turbo is purchased by sacrificing low-end torque through turbo-lag and exhaust back-pressure. You need power to turn the turbines, and no matter how you configure things, that means power that's not going to the wheels. That's my $.02, worth exactly what you paid for it. On to Braselton!

    • @PistonAvatarGuy
      @PistonAvatarGuy 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@dcs002 Excellent! I've never had anyone reply to one of my comments about torque and horsepower after having done some research on the subject and gaining a (mostly) correct understanding of it.
      -
      "...but it's more informative (though still not completely correct) to say higher torque represents a wider power band."
      -
      Except that, when comparing modern OHC engines (as the high rpm, low torque engines) and pushrod engines (as the low rpm, high torque engines), the opposite is usually true. With high torque, low rpm engines, the powerband will simply come in sooner when starting from a standstill (because peak power is available closer to idle rpm), which is what most people will associate with a wide powerband, but the width of the powerband is not dependent on where it lies within the rpm range of the engine. Low rpm engine performance isn't relevant in this kind of racing, the cars are running fast enough to allow them to stay in their powerband, wherever it might be in the rpm range of the engine.

    • @PistonAvatarGuy

    The Corkscrew.....America's version of The Dipper at Bathurst. The Corkscrew as a single corner (and even as an Aussie I'll freely admit this) is a fair bit more of a drop down than The Dipper is though. And The Dipper is taken after an S bend so the approach is slower than what the cars are doing along Rahal Straight before braking hard. And neither corner has much, if any runoff if a driver gets it wrong, has a clash with another car or has a car failure at the wrong moment.

      @@281cu6 I'm just a little bit pissed about some guy's crying like babys for a BOP restriction for the Porsche, but they really forget about the first year of this RSR: It was always a fast car, especially on one round, but Porsche was neither able to manage the tyres nor the fuel consumption of the car. This year they show no weakness at the long runs and it also seems the stint length of at least Porsche, Corvette and Ford are similar, so I think the BOP is OK for the LMGT. Speaking about Madzda the BOP restictions seems indeed unfair, especially when you think about the effort Madzda did with there engine development: The engine was clearly to weak last year, so they developed it further to be even more efficient and also more powerful and now the BOP penalize exactly that effort? This really has more then a bad taste. On the other hand I really do not know how the BOP is calculated at this class, maybe this restictions are not as bad as we think for Madzda/Joest. Think of it, they really did not look at the Laguna Seca race, nor I terms of performance, reliability nor strategy ( I mean why was the 77 in box the same time when the 55 collapsed? Didn't they do longer stint runs as the 55 all the race long? I really get it. So this clearly is a plus for the Penske split at box strategy. ) What I wanted to say: LS was neither their track nor their race and I really hope the long runs at Atlanta will suit them better and as a fan I cross my fingers for Madzda and Joest, but I also can understand for example the Cadillacs and Nissan, they also want to have at least a chance to win so a BOP restriction was necessary, but the question is: Really that big and really only on Madzda?
