The engineering that goes into these things is mind-blowing. "Those leg tanks are way too small," I think to myself and then bam, a panel is flipped open and there's a full size one. Same with the door.
Magic Square and Iron Factory are really killing it lately. I love the Legends figures in both lines, and now MS is branching out into Masterpiece scale ... phew!
The way you bring down the grill and turn around the panel where the matrix sits, it reminds me of the original MP 01 transformation, they certainly took cues from there.
Magic square did a fantastic job jumping into mp scale from there legends/chug whatever scale and this is a great update to to an "mp10" design but that's all the ms-01 is, an "updated" mp10! I'm not slanted to one side or the other realistic or toon accurate but the te-01 is replacing my mp10 to go with mp36, I'm still keeping my ko mp10 and will be breaking out appolyon for their own separate display cuz to me appolyon was made to stand next to mp10 and mp36 was made for the eventual mp44! Christ!... a little over a year after discovering the mp, ko's and 3rd party markets, I'm a little over a thousand into this hobby and no where near finished tracking down the characters I like, this hobby hit me in the face and my wallet hard!
Thanks Ben, after seeing this it put me over the edge & this guy is preordered. The pastel colors & transformation are really what did it for me, great review.
Not as cartoon accurate as MP-44 but price is definitely an advantage this figures got. The battle damage parts especially the windows would make a Shattered Glass repaint work really well.
@@gankingmid5124 Optimus was a little thinner in the cartoon and he didn't have extra details like the silver stripe in vehicle mode and yellow details on his forearms.
@@rugalheidbernstein9944 Depends on the episodes. The detail on the arms was there, but they were never yellow, except for some old Japanese toys which had a sticker for that. The grey band was on the toy but you wouldn't see that in the show due to budget except for a few scenes, such as More Than Meets the Eye Part 2, you'll see it for a split second then it's red. Same goes for transformation into robot form, sometimes you'll see it white before it starts.
Great video Ben, this will definitely be my Prime... I really can't understand the prices sky rocketing on original pieces. This is a great figure for the price, great colour palet and articulation to boot! Fantastic Prime!
Previous non-English reviews have shown the figure to be somewhat impressive. I had already paid for the pre-order recently. Now that I see your review I am even more excited for mail day.
@John Butner I can understand why people wouldn't want repeat characters but tbh they definitely need updates. There are enough Megatrons and you could argue that we already have MakeToy's seekers although Soundwave doesn't fit the new MP Aesthetic 100%, the mold has aged well but he needs a '+' treatment at least. MP-44's Starscream accessory seems to imply seekers 3.0 however I don't think that's anytime soon but it's inevitable, it'll make Takara lots of money (assuming they make the seekers SOMEWHAT affordable) which will fund more Masterpieces. We've gotten a lot of the Autobots and most of the main Decepticons. At their current rate I doubt we'd even get the full G1 Season 1 and 2 cast for a decade or longer regardless of whether or not they repeat characters. EDIT: If we’re talking about every company in this market and not just Takara we’ve already gotten a lot of characters thanks to third parties. Otherwise well, the only characters who really need updating are the seekers, everyone else has gotten a cartoon repaint except Soundwave and the Datsun brothers. If they’re updating characters with new molds, it’s only the lambo brothers and Soundwave who don’t fit the new aesthetic (other than seekers, but these molds are fine) and honestly I don’t think they really need it. Also, your collection will never be complete, even if it is you’ll just collect again anyway because it becomes a habit or addiction.
I can't wait for a new starscream, loved dx9's, hated maketoys floppy mess, but hopefully MS will knock them out of the park. Both legends and mp scales.
Actually the grey stripe is one of those elements that came and went depending on which scene of the cartoon you look at. Looking forward the TE review!
Definitely a buy for me. Personally, it looks better than mp-44. Not more accurate, but I like it better. Also, yeah, it's cheaper. And as someone without a source of income on a regular basis, the lower price point is really a good selling point.
Wow, that's the first time I've heard someone say it's better and not more accurate. If this is the option for you that's great, it's awesome third-parties exist.
@@kory7698 All about taste. I'm personally getting MP-44 but out of the two third-party options I too also like Transform Element the best, MS isn't for me but it's cool that it suits other people's tastes, imo it's more like an updated MP-10 more than it is a competitor to MP-44 (not to say that it isn't, of course it is).
Just realised you missed a step. In truck mode at the bottom of the part where the head goes, a part folds down and slides into the waist to give it more stability in truck mode. Got mine last night, very happy with it, though has some issues. Stress marks particularly.
I think he looks really nice in general. The only thing (apart from the knees) that I really dislike? I WISH they had done a battle damaged head and face for this figure.
haha you can just hear the concentration in Bens voice when hes putting those small pieces for the extra head together :p If you see this, thank you for the quick review, Ben!
I noticed a lot of people say that Magic squares Prime doesn't look as accurate, compared to MP44, which I kinda dissagree with, I personally belive both figures look as accurate as can be compared to the show model (because of course, the model wasn't always consistent.) But still, it's a nice (and cheaper) update to the previous MP10.
whoever said that is a diddle darn dunderhead. MS-01 is made with the idea of looking good in mind while maintaining a bit of cartoon accuracy. MP-44 is made with purely animation accuracy in mind. Down to the lack of paint in some places.
IMO in terms of accuracy you could always argue proportions since as you said the show was very inconsistent. I also believe it's more of an update to MP-10 rather than a competitor to MP-44 in terms of cartoon accuracy, MS aimed to have their own interpretation of Prime while staying somewhat cartoon accurate which I can respect. Speaking of accuracy the sculpting of MP-44 is the most cartoon accurate out of all the offerings. When you look at the headsculpts for MP-44 it's undeniably Optimus Prime and the way Takara implements the details on the cartoon model is extremely faithful compared to MS. When people say it's not as accurate I think that's the grounds they base it on, proportions can be equally cartoon accurate - some more than others, then again that's opinionated unless you're going by how they were presented or drawn most of the time - but in terms of sculpting and paint it's not as accurate but that doesn't mean we don't appreciate what MS has done, I think it's great as an update to MP-10 for those who prefer those proportions and a mix between the old masterpiece style and the new cartoon accurate aesthetic.
main problem with the upcoming MP-44 is the huge backpack. The back of a figure matters to me. MP-10 has fake-truck grid, MP-44 has fake grid and windows and MS managed to make those 2 the same in both modes, THAT is something really nice. The only proportion downsight is the window size, but that wasnt consistent in the cartoon so
When they come out with the trailer for this figure, I hope they come out with an alternate head that’s battle damaged to go with the battle damaged parts
Love mine, just got him today. So articulated but I wish the side skirts and rear flaps were separated. Also Ben, why is this on your KO channel? It's a whole new, 3P figure.
Awesome review but I now can't unsee the fact that you have the smokestacks mistransformed on MP-10, I thought they were meant to be down in truck mode because it reveals the curved part at the bottom of the stack which is intended to look as if it goes into the truck.
Glad to see the transformation is very similar to MP-10. I still really like that transformation, but the vehicle mode unfortunately took away from the robot mode asthetics in my opinion.
Love the looks of this guy! Don’t have a G1 Prime yet as I mainly collect ‘cons but this may need to be an addition. Wonder if they’ll do more in this scale, sure hope so!
Since this has the battle damage, I wonder if they will do a grey death version of prime? Its just all paint. I dont love the waist ( translucent plastic) showing in vehicle mode, but its not a deal breaker. I would love to see some 3rd party trailers.
I hope they come out with a metallic version. This looks cartoon accurate but the cartoon if they could busgetwise would have made prime with more detail like MP-10 which cabs version looks more real world while still having that cartoon look as well. I'm sti going with my MP-10 but it's a stylistic choice only.
Much cleaner back than the official v3. The lighter, matte plastic does a better job aping the toon look than takara's plastic and paint. This looks like the one to get to me. Die cast is not a positive unless it improves the function of the figure in some way, which is almost never how 3rd party uses it, so if that's the only downside I think we have a winner. Really can't wait to see these guys do somebody who doesn't already have 50 million toys.
Love this thing, I’ve been waiting on a red and blue prime cause most are priced ridiculously high and Takara is sipping the sake a little too much for charging 450$US. 👍🏾

I'm the same. To me the Masterpiece line was a bridge between the toys and the cartoon: Accurate, real-world, alternate modes, with more cartoon-like robot modes. Is the plan to move towards those shitty-looking cartoon alt' modes, too?
yunoyuluvit I don't think the cartoon alt modes looked shitty as they were based on actual real life cars. However, I think Takara might have over engineered their figure, giving it a ton of kibble and making it look really messy. TE I think could have nailed the budget g1 accurate prime

9:39 was that your stomach mate 😂
guess ill be one of the few to keep mp10
I'm the same. To me the Masterpiece line was a bridge between the toys and the cartoon: Accurate, real-world, alternate modes, with more cartoon-like robot modes.
Is the plan to move towards those shitty-looking cartoon alt' modes, too?
yunoyuluvit I don't think the cartoon alt modes looked shitty as they were based on actual real life cars. However, I think Takara might have over engineered their figure, giving it a ton of kibble and making it look really messy. TE I think could have nailed the budget g1 accurate prime
I'm with you. While I love the show accuracy on the beast wars mp figures, I prefer mp10 molds because they are stylized.
same, for me MP 10 is Optimus.
I don't even have MP10.. Mine is still MP01 😊
Does the plastic material feel the same as their legend's scale material.
This figure look amazing could you do update video showing how he scales with mp megatron and soundwave and starscream ben?
Thank you Ben ur amazing!
I personally like mp10 more, the only thing I don’t like as much is its pose-ability
Nice review. I'm interested in magic squares legends scale optimus. Nothing against this leader one but i don't have enough room for that size figure anymore. I prefer my first ever masterpiece mp01 optimus prime.
Well...my number section also not glued, loose joints galore, already broken tabs...hope TF-direct dont mind sending me a new one
great review mate. quick question, Which rotating display base are you using?
the front chrome piece on mine fell off too
