    i understand liking the stylized version but for me i just see a lot more of prime and the character in the new version. like the specific head shape and proportions really hit home. i know not everyone feels that way though

      Nah I know what you're saying man. I love MP10 and MS01 for their stylized look and back when I was younger I used to consider that my ideal prime design cause I thought it looked cool. But having the G1 accurate primes of nowadays is really nice.
      And with This headsculpt I understand what you're saying. It's very small differences but I VASTLY Prefer this headsculpt over TE01s who I thought had a too blocky head in a way, like the facemask didn't really have depth, and the eyes poking out of the sockets ever so slightly just made the figure feel lifeless in a way. Not to mention I do also like the colors of MS02 better than TE01. The Blue on TE01 being slightly deeper/darker as well as the red not matching really made the figure look cheaper in a bad way that was distracting, meanwhile I actually like the soft plastic look and the overall colors of MS02 much better, and it does feel like he just jumped off the 1986 movie screen.
      I do still slightly prefer MP44s Headsculpt and Painted colors but I EASILY would trade those for MS02s actually strait Head antenna (Not the biggest fan of the weird curved ones on MP44) and not having a shit ton of paint chipping

      @SciFiDude79 Though I do think it's weird that he refers to it as looking "childish" like that doesn't really make sense to me. Like in the same vein something like MP10s and MS01s look just as "childish" because they're all just good looking prime heads. It's a very cartoony design in general. If anything I always thought the more 1986 G1 accurate headsculpt looked more mature because the taller and more blocky face mask always gave off more of a sense of maturity/wisdom to prime than the shorter more angled/inclined face mask.
      Like it just feels like such a weird criticism that doesn't match.

      The really important thing he said in this video is that preference - regardless of what anyone tries to tell you - is subjective.
      I know that people like to pretend that they’re “speaking facts” or “being unbiased,” but those words don’t mean what a lot of people think they do.
      Like you said, I prefer the G1-accurate figures, mostly. ‘Cartoon-accuracy’ also isn’t an objective metric, though, because even in a single episode, the characters would look so different from themselves.

    Just got mine Friday and I ABSOLUTELY LOVE this figure! Yeah he's a light weight and the plastic could be better but other than that, I have NO problems! My opinion, doesn't feel as cheap as everyone says to me. He will be on display replacing MS01 on my display shelf. To each is own.

    Hi Bobby, please do a 4-way Versus.
    Magic Square Peace VS Magic Square Freedom VS Transform Element OP Leader VS MP-44. Throw in MP10 as well if you want.

    I like Magic Square's sculpts, but there's something about the looks of their plastics that just looks cheap to me. It looks like it needs some sandpaper on it to smooth it out.
    While I prefer MP44, I'd rather have both kidneys!! Not sure if I'll get this or TE-01.
    Another great review👍

    The side-profile of the truckmode seems waaaaay too thin, like stubby, feels very off compared to all other offerings, that and the plain plastic doesn't look great at all compared to 1.0 and especially TE-01 (which, to me, is still the best prime out there)

    Yeah, out of the box, I was soooo disappointed. For a 2.0 from a known company, I expected it to be more substantial in a LOT of different ways, most notable the lack of die cast and paint. I want to see a versus just for the satisfaction of seeing the 2.0 getting obliterated, but we'll see what everyone else wants...

    I’m surprised you didn’t mention anything about the (imo cheap) feel of the joints and materials used (unless it was during the transformation, tbh I scrubbed through that). I got this in the other day and was expecting something like the DS Seekers (that are around the same price), but felt like it fell well short in the quality department.

    • @DanielTorres-xc6yt
      @DanielTorres-xc6yt 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I would have thought Bobby of all people would point out the absolutely dreadful quality of the plastic in this, I got mine a few days ago and I usually dont care about a figure feeling premium, but if I am gonna pay over £100 for a figure I really dont expect him to feel like a bloody KO, even the KO MP44 feels better than this.

    • @DanielTorres-xc6yt
      @DanielTorres-xc6yt 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @SciFiDude79 nah nah nah, I am very aware of how much hes talked about their plastic, but thats in regards to their legends stuff, and even so, the plastic in their legends stuff is still good (i have quiet a few) but its the fact that its sort of gummy and flexible. This however, is NOT the same plastic, I would take the stuff on their legends over this any day, this fells like I could snap it in half by barley trying, if anything he shouldve doubled down on talking about it cus this is now their second MP scale thing and clearly they dont even plan on using better plastic even for a bot of this size. And on top of that he hasnt even mentioned the widespread QC issue this guy has, including mine

    • @zacharygibson5267
      @zacharygibson5267 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @SciFiDude79 Maybe, it’s been quite some time since their first MP Prime came out, so If it shares the same cheap build quality, it’s unfortunate they haven’t managed to improve during that time.
      If you are referring to their legends scale stuff, I don’t have any first hand experience with it, but I’ve read that it’s made of a much different (more pliable) type of plastic.
      Either way, If I bought this thing based on this video review alone, I’d probably at the very least be disappointed it wasn’t brought up.
      I unfortunately did not wait for reviews since the price wasn’t too high, and I remembered hearing that their first MP prime was pretty decent. I probably should have taken the time to re watch some reviews on him.

    I'd love to see a vs between MS, TE, and MP. I'd like to get this figure to replace TE-01, and the issues with MP-44 have kept me from sinking a lot of coin into that figure. All of them have issues but I think this one might beat the others out in my opinion.

    • @EKOddLink
      @EKOddLink 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The one thing that has been bugging most people, which is completely valid, is the cheap feeling plastic making it not as fun to handle. I think some exaggerate how bad it is because seen some people absolutely man handle this figure and claim it falling apart is the figures fault, but the cheap feeling making it not as fun to play still does make sense. And the brittle plastic did result in some people's coming with broken smoke stacks which really is a Shame but magic Square is making sure people get replacements.
      But it sucks brcause that really is the only legitimate problem with the figure, and if it had higher quality plastic it without a doubt would be everyone's preferred Prime with the most accurate to G1 sculpt of all MP Primes/really great proportions/aesthetics, best looking G1 Accurate truck mode, and by far the easiest and most intuitive Transformation of the modern MP Primes to boot.

    • @Righteous_Prime
      @Righteous_Prime 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      He stated at the end of the video he would place this one behind all those

    • @EKOddLink
      @EKOddLink 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Righteous_Prime As someone who got their MS02 a little while ago and has handled all the MP Primes, I can safely say for me personally MS02 is the overall best of the bunch.
      I dunno if I just got lucky and got a good batch of MS02, if anything I think the people that got the first batch of MS02 just got a bad batch, because a lot if not all of the problems the first batch of reviews people pointed out are just either not that big of a deal or non existent with Mines as well as copies that have been popping up more recently.
      The plastic is nowhere near as brittle and hand grenadey as people described it, panels don't pop apart when handling it, all of the joints feel nice and tight, and I mean really tight, not overly tight but that perfect satisfyingly tight where joints aren't moving at all no matter how rough you handle it, etc. Etc.
      Some of it may be QC issues, but honestly I feel like a lot of the early reviewers were either being hyperbolic, or just not handling the figure correctly or both. Like for example the feet/ankles being wobbly, I noticed in a lot of reviews most of those people complaining about that just didn't flatten out the feet correctly, because the ball joint on mines is just as wobbly as theirs, but if you collapse the feet in the right way where everything is nice and put together, that wobble is non existent when standing the figure up and posing it. A lot of early reviewers really were just man handling and mishandling their figures and imo injustly docking points from it for that.
      Bobby is also just kind of Biased here. He's grading it on what he wants from a prime aesthetically and docking it points because it's more animation accurate when that's the entire point of the figure, and when you grade it on that basis, MS02 is by far the most cartoon accurate Prime with the best overall proportions and cleanest aesthetics. The slightly bulkier limbs on MS02 is more of stylistic choice, and I honestly can go back and forth between the smaller arms of MP44 and the beefier ones of MS02, it's one of those where I can like either or more on any given day, but when not comparing them side by side you honestly barely notice the difference and can just have fun with the figure either way.
      Another thing is people will complain about the small little bits of the back from the top of the truck poking out, being visible from the front, or the tabs on the inner arms, but those really are such non issues and you barely notice them when you have the figure in hand, especially while posing it. If we're gonna point those out, then are we gonna balance that out between TE01s Bumper butt, ankle peg shifter things, rivets everywhere, and imo just really unsatisfying proportions compared to the other Primes, or MP44s huge ass back pack and slew of transformation lines and and gaps everywhere?
      Honestly a lot of people dunked on this figure way too harshly and treated every little issue it had like it was just absolutely horrible, when they forget to mention the faults the other figures had.
      MS02 has the best articulation, cleanest, most animation accurate sculpt, best proportions, easiest and most fun transformation, and overall is just the most fun figure, while still being a damn good display piece. Also the joints are so much tighter and more satisfying than the inexcusably wobbly MP44 joints. Literally can't oick that thing up with out the leg ratchets sagging and swaying back and forth as well as the waist joint wobbling and swiveling from you just breathing on it. TE01s joints feel slightly better but the trade off with MS02 is MUCH better articulation.
      There are pieces you can nitpick back and forth when comparing all of them but overall MS02 has the best balance of them all

  • @toybonniesfm
    @toybonniesfm 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I wish we had the finish on this the same as the MS-01, the matte look really would help with the cartoon feel. I'm an MP-01/MP-10 kind of guy, but this guy is the pinnacle of G1 Prime *accuracy*
    Actually MS-B46 would take the title but this is the best MP scaled one imo.

    Looks like I'll still stick to MP-10. I like a more toon accurate look, but I still want some of the toy aesthetic when it comes to Prime. I'm surprised you didn't touch on the ratchet shoulders that start turning into a soft ratchet because the plastic wears down. You can even see the wear marks in your video.

    I think your closing line sums up why I think you're the best TF reviewer we have, Bobby. "I think a lot of this character comes down to subjective preference, and only you can make that call." It's the theme that has always run true through your videos. 'This is what I like, but judge this based on what YOU like'. It's a level of welcome maturity that counterbalances the fanboy mentality that ends up framing so much of a fandom's discourse. Thanks for everything you do for us, Bobby. TFs have become a secondary focus of my collecting nowadays but I always watch your stuff because I'm happy to make time to hear the opinion of the grownup in the room 👍

    The first one of these that I had ,the paint was light ,like the figure in the review. The second one , looked like they added more paint and was candy apple red, just like the advertisement. I am pleased with the figure and with the easy transformation, I would say this is the best Optimus Prime out right now until Fanstoys brings theirs. I am loving the hyper toon look and the simplicity. I know that is not your thing. I am looking at this old video because I want to know your thoughts on the upcoming Magic Square Bruticus. I have a zeta Bruticus on the way and I already have Ocular Max. I am keeping the Ocular max but I was thinking that I may get rid of the Zeta since Magic Square Bruticus is coming out sooner than I expected. Know this isn't your cup of tea, I am guessing you will keep your Zeta. But I figured I would ask your thoughts anyway.

    While I respect the preference of others towards the stylized look of MP figures, I don't share it. I grew up with the G1 transformers, and I want my MPs to be so toon accurate that they look like they jumped out of the screen... call it nostalgia, call it childishness... I honestly don't care LOL. In fact the older "stylized" MPs were meh to me so I never paid much attention to them and instead used my budget to get the high end Bandai products which were faithful renditions of old anime mecha like the OG Gundam and Voltes V to name a few. It was the emergence of the toon-accurate MPs that pulled me towards TF collecting... I don't know how long this trend will last so I'll get as many of these toon accurate G1 MPs as I can 😎

    Pretty good looking figure but I was hoping for more. I really like how it is cleaner looking especially in the legs. Also, the fact that the MP-44 grill doesn't go all the way to the waist always bothered me but this one fixes that is a plus. But things like the crooked face mask with the light shining through the gap, hollow arms, cheap feeling plastic, and most of all that square backpack "cape" sticking out all the time sorta ruin it for me. Gonna stick with the MP-44 KO as the best cartoon accurate one for me.

  • @the-aspiring-creator4249
    @the-aspiring-creator4249 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    It's kind of Magic Square just looked at all the MP Primes and went "How can we put all the aesthetics into him?" and came out with this. I think he looks good and the mold definitely has potential but something about this screams "late to the party". I still think overall TE is probably the best bet if you want a cartoon accurate Prime but don't want to sink so much money into MP-44.

    • @EKOddLink
      @EKOddLink 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I mean it is a bit late to the party but that doesn't really effect the figures quality/how much people would wanna buy it.
      What does is that cheap plastic quality that also effects some of the tolerance issues. And that really sucks because if that Quality was fixed and the figure felt more solid, it really would be the best MP Prime without a doubt.
      Because at least in my Opinion it looks miles better than TE01, while being cheaper (for better or for worse in this case), having a better, easier/more intuitive transformation, and having much better proportions, both in Robot and Truck mode.

    • @the-aspiring-creator4249
      @the-aspiring-creator4249 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@EKOddLink There's also the plastic quality aspect... though really it's not so much that's the big issue as its the sledgehammer to the nads that follows up the sledgehammer to the kneecaps. It does look great and I agree in some aspects it's better than the others but also I feel like G1 Prime is becoming one of those designs that at this point has just been perfected and the only criticisms you can make are nitpicks and if not that? Well people have made their investments already. I feel like if this came out at the same time as TE's and MP-44 and had a more solid construction it would be more notable but as it is? I do not see much of a life for this in its future or much of a point unless absolutely none of the prior Primes have worked for you.

    • @EKOddLink
      @EKOddLink 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Always thought TE 01s legs looked kind of pathetic and lame compared to the competition, namely the upper legs which looked thinner and weaker, meanwhile the Magic Square legs look beefier, while also having things like the angles top of the thighs that look much kore aesthetically pleasing, and even having a slight curve to them that make them feel slightly more organic, and animation accurate. And that was probably even morr accentuated by TE01s chest feeling slightly too broad proportionally.
      And just a whole bunch of other things that start off small but really add up for me, like the Bumperbutt, Sideview mirrors being visible in Robot mode, the weird slider things on the Ankles, the back being ever so slightly too flat for Prime, and even thr hesdsculpt, I felt was slightly too blocky where the face plate didn't have much depth to it, and the eyes poking out ever so slightly from the sockets made it feel little more lifeless than something like MP44s which I still think had the best headsculpt, though the curved antenna are still kinda weird to me, when sometimes it feels right and animation accurate but sometimes I wish they were just straight. MS02s headsculpt is the perfect blend between the 2 where it has the straight antenna and slighly more blocky look while havung nice eyes and more depth on the face mask.
      I also just always hated the colors of TE01. The blue always felt too deep/dark compared to both MP44 and now MS02, and that mixed with the flat finish of the plastic made it look really cheap to me. Meanwhile the soft plastic look on MS02 mixed with the better colors while it still make look cheap to some I actually really like and it makes it feel even more like the animation model to me, and just looks pleasing to me.
      I know these are all small things, and we all got different tastes and preferences but these things really did add up for me and why I kept my MP44 over TE01 and why I really feel like I'm gonna love this figure... depsite the plastic quality.
      Goddammit magic square, one problem, you had to make one problem and it had to be a pretty big one

      @@the-aspiring-creator4249 I get that. The G1 Prime comparison really is getting so minute and small that the perfect G1 ptime between people is gonna be somewhere in between 2 of the MP Primes and it's gonna just be small differences too. But besides the quality issue I really do belueve this is the perfect G1 Prime, and that if it didn't have those quality issues I honestly feel like a LOT of people would easily seel their other G1 Primes and replace it with this one.
      Again just that perfect G1 Robot mode and Truck mode, all while having a simple transformation that makes it actually fun to transform it unlike the other 2 that feel like chores or just straight up horrifying to transform, like I feel like that'd be a big deal for a lot of people to actually wanna go out and get this figure. But now with the quality issues I do worry for it's shelf life now. It really is such a shame it had to be that bad

      As a MS fan over New Age, and proud owner of MS-01 and a bunch of their Legends, I've never seen any hate form Bobby towards MS. Hate would be not having or giving reasoned points for not liking them (materials and lack of paint, usually). In fact, he seems to want to like their figures all the time, but can't get past those things because to him they're too important. So no hate at all, just tastes.

    This is almost the perfect Prime for me other than one key problem. MP-44’s proportions weren’t quite right for me (the abdomen was too short and the crotch area was too big), TE-01 was a bit too boxy around the waist and MS-01 was a bit too chunky. This version pretty much nails the G1 cartoon look.
    My only criticism, which is kind of a deal breaker, is once I saw it next to MP-44 it was clear how plain the plastic looks. It really needs to be painted to give it that shiny look. Hopefully they’ll do another version with paint applied as that would make it an insta-buy for me.

      I love this figure and Magic Square as a whole puts out good stuff, but even though a lot of this is great, I think it's a notable example of their "amateurishness".
      The head sculpt may beat out MP-44 for me, but the eyes being flat rather sculpted is off putting, and the visible assembly connections from the helmet to the mouth-watering are just not up to snuff.
      The hands are very posable, but the palm hange does not look great, with a large chunk of the plan being isolated from the hand as a whole. The fingers are all the same length, which has never looked great on any figure I've come across. The scuplt as a whole is very blocky, something companies such as Fans Toys have most past, rounding the sculpt and making it flow. They're also too large, though smaller than Light of Freedom's.
      MP Hound set the gold standard for hip joints, making poses seemless. The MP-44 style of hips create a gap from posing it, that and you must manually flip the hip skirts outward for side movement. Light of Peace may have simplified the mechanism, resulting in fewer panel lines, but it came at the cost of having no real mechanism to speak of, meaning it must be manually returned to normal.
      The ankle balljoint was fine for the legends version, but an MP needs something more robust if it's going to survive any real manipulation over time.
      The arms forearms have a visible gap, something I figure could've been been rectified while they modified the transformation from the legends version. The outer edges of the roof panel (the one that serves as the only real piece of kibble on this figure) could've been attached to the forearm, folding into the arm for robot mode, eliminating the gap and the back kibble.
      (The axe sucks; Newage David has the best axe, MP-44's axe lags behind due to the weird attachment joint.)
      I very much believe an unpainted figure can still look good, and that paint is not always necessary. The problem most unpainted figures face it the plastic used is almost never given a proper finish, resulting in a dull look. Plastic could be given a high gloss finish, something many MP paints have. Many plastics are also translucent, resulting in weak, cheap coloring.
      The window plastic sucks, resulting in a very "dead" truck look. A lighter shade would've been better, with a foggy finish to hide the internals.
      The matric chamber looks off. They could've/should've had detailed parts lining the chamber, making the whole assembly firmer. The green is also inaccurate and just looks plain ugly.

      @passionnotparked9099 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I Agree with all your points here, adding the visible forearm tabs and the extra longish thighs and if MS was going Toon why not matte windshields, its a NO go for me.

  • @TrypticOwen
    @TrypticOwen 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I like the original - so much so it is the only figure for which I was ever willing to swallow the "X-repaint" thing. I'm eagerly awaiting this version 2. I'm not normally an uber 'toon guy and would prefer more nods to the original toy - especially in vehicle mode - but I do think they have done what they always do and perfect what came before. Their first attempt was basically MP-10 but having learned from all the lessons of all the other Primes and this feels like they've watched Takara's missteps with their v3, learned again and brought out their own.
    Ultimately, this is the only MP figure I've bought in the last four years (as best as I can recall).
    I think there are some negatives - I think people are getting a bit jaded with the main characters getting version after version without ever finishing the lineup. Takara, for example, have done 3 Primes and 2 Bumblebees before ever touching Mirage, Jazz, Cliffjumper, etc...; MS have taken this to extremes - doing Prime, doing no MP figures for years and then skipping straight back to Prime. There's a decent ground-swell of opinion that people would like their Megatron design to get the same treatment and I think they should follow-through with that, this time, and see how they fare with a non-Prime.

  • @fanwilliam7725
    @fanwilliam7725 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    The upscale makes no sense at all. I have been a fan of Magic Square when they are making legend figures mostly due to their ability to design small scale transformers with great look and articulation. But when they decide to upscale their legend bot to become a leader class, that creates tons of problems. Material, lack of paints, tolerance issue, etc. All these trivial problems of a legend bot got amplified to a leader class scale. The only upside of getting this size is probably the articulated hands.
