Just note, the most controversial part of this figure are the materials. The figure uses a combination of ABS and Nylon plastic. The latter is actually stronger than ABS, but doesn't paint as well. The lack of diecast weight makes it feel cheap. Whether you like the feel of the plastic is entirely subjective, and I won't begrudge anyone for not liking the way it feels (it just feels like normal plastic fyi). Just make sure you keep this in mind when you buy the figure.
I honestly don't get why people are so attracted to die casting. Modern plastic are strong enough that you don't really need die casting unless it's for weight balance or very thin transformation joints. Also, metal isn't really that expensive. You get 4 kg of metal if you buy a dumbbell from amazon for 50 bucks.
It's definitely lighter than what people are used to when they pick up an MP scale figure. This figure just feels "normal" in your hands. The light weight also benefits the joints in posing. I own Planet X Cacus and that is a hefty figure. The ratchets are so tight that it's no fun to pose and transform.

I really love Magic Square's Optimus Primes because they're the only ones that demonstrate that Optimus doesn't need a faux grille to look good in both modes
@@graefx Speaking as someone who has the OP Leader, I’m certain the MS is going to be much better. Especially in terms of transformation and posability. I like the MS so much that I’m planning on waiting for the inevitable metallic version of the figure. MS has always given us metallic versions of their Optimus Primes, and a metallic version of this new Optimus would make it even better.
masterpiece style optimus prime transformations are just getting simpler and simpler while sacrificing less and less from both modes and I am absolutely loving watching this evolution
@@sw1000xg actually you’re wrong the back is really good especially compared to mp-44, also you can barely even see the back and even then you would still mistake it for a non-transformable figure.
At around 15:32, when transforming the legs, you missed a second tab which is located about an inch below the first tab. Having those 2 tabs in place will provide the needed clearance to roll the wheels in truck mode. Be careful with the second tab, though. It has an angular shape which can break if forced in.
it was such a genius transformation, would never in a million years think of inverting the matrix chamber and using that to form the bumper???! truly a beautiful mix of real and faux parts and tons of creativity and imagination!!!
That's an incredibly clean and gratifying transformation. If I could find it for $100 it'd be an instant grab. I don't mind the lack of paint either, I like handling my figures. I will say in Takara's defense the truck bed feels more realistic if kibbly where as the Magic Square went with a more cartoon idea that feels a little plane and weirdly blank to me, but small nitpick. The whole transformation is just a way better execution.
my biggest problem with these figures is how complicated the transformations can be. even as a veteran, i don’t want to spend 20-30 minutes going from mode to mode. this looks so good, they’ve really done a good job demonstrating you don’t need to make a miserable transformation for such a high quality figure
Since you can't display it in both forms at the same time I don't know WHY someone hasn't offered a Transformers collection line with a perfect looking and articulating action figure in cartoon scale to the rest of the line and also a perfect recreation of the character's vehicle form with rubber tires and opening doors as well as a bunch of human characters that fit into the vehicles..maybe 2 versions of the humans too each in scale with the robot and vehicle forms. They'd display great, look FAR better than transformation examples EVER WILL, FAR better display as They'd look perfect and you can display both forms at the same time...ANNND they could be less expensive even though you'd be getting both forms and humans and accessories because they'd be MUCH simpler and cheaper to design and make.

Why can't people except that 95% of the time, if you have to get a figure to look fantastic, sleak, and accurate, the transformation is just gonna be quite complex.

Noticing a lot of similar engineering to their original Prime, which pleases me. I don't actually collect Transformers, I just watch videos to keep up with them, and I loved Light of Freedom - no faux parts, easy transformation, bold colors, good look, just fantastic. This takes what was already near-perfection and tunes it even tighter.
Near no faux pieces, the only thing is thos gas tanks, but for that, that to deal with, like, mass shifting, and they end up in the same place anyway, great engineering
@@Raven-ph1rp Yeah, the gas tanks I get, they change size between modes and it's simpler this way. The sticking point for me with Primes is faux grills. I hate faux parts in general, but Prime especially, it seems like some figures are overengineered to accommodate faux grills just for the sake of one of them being a slightly different shape.
Love the review. Without question Magic Square will come out with a premium version for the paint junkies. It was a smart move to get this figure out first as it's honestly beautiful and fun to *handle* . Paint chipping is an issue I'd rather avoid and with this iteration you don't have to worry about it. Be patient the premium "soon come"
And isn't that what they did with their first version "Light of Freedom"? Start with the straight plastic, then the repaints (including a premium painted version)...

You didn't mention how paper thin he feels. Like a sneeze could blow him across the room. Also, for truck mode each wheel assembly actually pegs into two slots on the side of the leg, the rectangular peg you showed and a trapezoidal peg hidden behind the wheels. He'll roll cleanly.
Around 1:40 I mention the lightness - but I don’t personally see that as a bad thing. & I have tried many times but sadly on mine they just won’t click in all the way :( maybe I’m doing something wrong
This is the most impressive MP style optimus I've ever seen. I would never consider any other brand now. Both modes look phenomenal. And its a great transformation. And finally, one with circular headlights like the og.
They should do a kit with a trailer and all the accessories that MP-44 got. They would make a ton of money selling it separately and most of the collectors would be happy that they can just get Optimus if they want
This guy was almost perfect, finally the grill is the real thing from the truck and not some hidden prop inside. Too bad the roof lights are fake now. So for me, Transform Element TE-01 Leader is still the best MP-ish Optimus
Hope you are getting the MS-02EX 2023 version and sell this one. Because the new one's much more improved. The whole fig got a great shiny darker paint. The doors in cab mode is no longer floppy. The smokestack is less floppy. The ankles are NOT LOOSE anymore. There's diecast in the legs that makes the figure feel heavier and premium. The wheels are also metal now. I think you'll enjoy it much more!
Great detailed review which includes comparing it with MP-44. I couldn’t agree with you more that this figure has a much cleaner and finished look and represents the cartoon perfectly. It’s weird how other reviewers feel just the opposite way, but like they also said in their review, it’s just their opinion.
Looks like they used parts of the te-01 mold which is another representation of the g1 optimus prime aswell as the original magic square mold but i think te-01 is better but he can barely pose but its an amazing piece and has amazing transformations (Edit update) now that I’ve seen more photos im leaning towards magic square i might sell my te-01 prime
@@thomasthetrain2 It isn't, it's from the MS-01 mold with some MP-44 looks/aesthetics thrown in. TE-01 is by a different company, they don't have anything to do with Magic Square and just look similar cause they're both G1 cartoon Optimus Primes.
They’ve mainly only done upscales of their Optimus Prime figures. But, given the positivity this upscaled Optimus has gotten them, maybe MS will start upscaling some of their other figures in response. I know I’d be more than willing to try out an upscale of their Megatron.

I genuinely don’t know whether this or OP leader is better. They both look amazing in robot mode but this figure has more articulation. However in Truck mode, OP leader looks better.

FYI with the legs there are two tabs that are a bit tricky to push into their respective slots but if you manage to do it correctly the back tires have a lot more clearance and the truck rolls just fine!!!

I really hope magic square does a masterpiece megatron based on their small megatron but with a more flat chest bit. That would be amazing. I have mp-36 and I love it but if MS makes theirs, I can actually play with it and transform it more often.

It's not but the shipping cost adds to the price. I think I paid like $120 for him and that included shipping cost. He looks great but is very cheap feeling considering the plastic and no paint application. I still love my MP-01 and MP-10 Optimus Prime though. Couldn't justify the price for MP-44 as that was just way too expensive. I could see why it's expensive, paint, trailer, accessories and the electronics in him but, I just couldn't do it. Here's hoping Toyhax will put it some decals for him as he's very plain looking.
I have the MP-44 but bought it two years after it was first released and got hit with the commensurate late tax, lol. With what you're getting for $100 USD, the Magic Square is a very, very attractive option.
This guy looks like he actually rivals Optus Pexus in terms of poseability. That in combination with the (relatively) low price point just might push me towards a purchase. My main qualm is how he has faux roof lights in robot mode while the real ones are visible on his back panels, but hey, on the other hand, his ab grill is the actual truck grill! Also I like how his feet don't stick out in truck mode.

Nice video. one thing, you have miss transformed the legs, that is why its not enough clarence, this is also very fiddely to get right. there is a mushroom peg behind the back wheel
I once had the Transform Element. He was nice, not too complicated to transform, but it had serious clearance issues when transforming. I do have the official MP Nemesis Prime 3.0. He's very complicated to transform, but I could do it with just the instructions with ease. So, how this MS will turn out? ... ... So, looks not harder than MP-10 to transform! Plus the fact that for both the bot and truck mode, *the same grill is used* is a miracle in itself.

I will be selling my MP44 and getting this, but only if it’s re-released with paint. I love that it isn’t a nightmare but that’s no excuse for the finish looking budget.
I'd say one possible engineering solution for the trailer hitch would be to attach it to an inner panel on the left side for one kind and the right for the other and flip out the one you want. Though I think that it would also be fine if they had extra slots so it could store somewhere either inside his guts or inside or on the leg just so you don't loose it. I don't tend to use the trailers - they just go in a draw heck I really should slip a piece of paper inside them to say what they are as I have so many of the (not that useful) things now.

To be honest, I think the ab-crunch is actually better on this compared to the og Light of Freedom, with that the hinge was metal, so it was a little more noticeable compared to this which I think looks overall better.

The fully chromed matrix is reminiscent of how the matrix looked in Beast wars before it was broken. Alternate universe where Beast wars never happened perhaps? 🤔 obviously not the reason why it’s fully chrome I just thought it was a neat connection lol
I think you may need to fiddle with the cab panels a bit to get it perfect, as well as the wheel clearance at the back. The feet may just need to be fiddled with a bit. I am planning to grab this guy as I already have the legends scale figure and I love it, so as one of my last masterpiece scale will be amazing
it's pretty similar to the TE Optimus . We really need a 3p. To make the trailer so we can properly complete these 3p Optimus figures. Not paying 900 bux for the Mp44
its really good prime, but i think the mp-44 looks better porportionally, i just bought a 4th party mp-44 which is pretty good but this is probably better option since i doubt most people would agree with me, i think the chest is too rectangular imo
Ah fair enough - I mean Mp44 is still a good figure but I just think in retrospective falls a little short compared to what other 3p companies are producing for a fraction of the cost.

I personally like Mp44 (4th party backpack less ver.) prime more for “accuracy” LoP looks more like the IDW comic prime with the more thick thighs and big chest and ankles while IMO MP44 looks more film accurate however I think Transform Element looks the most cartoon accurate with its blocks brick legs
To be fair, back when MP44 was released, almost every masterpiece style of figure was awful, TT and 3P were all overengineering the figures. Thank God they have chill out and now we can get beautiful pieces without the nightmareish transformations.
TE-01 was the best prime in my book without factoring in price and I've seen it as low as $75. It depends if you appreciate heft. It has diecast parts and just feels solid. I thought I had purchased my last prime and this one shows up. Don't think you can go wrong with either of them.

Hope you are getting the MS-02EX 2023 version and sell this one. Because the new one's much more improved. The whole fig got a great shiny darker paint. The doors in cab mode is no longer floppy. The smokestack is less floppy. The ankles are NOT LOOSE anymore. There's diecast in the legs that makes the figure feel heavier and premium. The wheels are also metal now. I think you'll enjoy it much more!
Great detailed review which includes comparing it with MP-44. I couldn’t agree with you more that this figure has a much cleaner and finished look and represents the cartoon perfectly. It’s weird how other reviewers feel just the opposite way, but like they also said in their review, it’s just their opinion.

Looks like they used parts of the te-01 mold which is another representation of the g1 optimus prime aswell as the original magic square mold but i think te-01 is better but he can barely pose but its an amazing piece and has amazing transformations

@@thomasthetrain2 It isn't, it's from the MS-01 mold with some MP-44 looks/aesthetics thrown in.
TE-01 is by a different company, they don't have anything to do with Magic Square and just look similar cause they're both G1 cartoon Optimus Primes.
Magic Square did a Megatron and It is one of my favourite figures. I can't imagine why they haven't released an MP scale version of him.
They’ve mainly only done upscales of their Optimus Prime figures.
But, given the positivity this upscaled Optimus has gotten them, maybe MS will start upscaling some of their other figures in response.
I know I’d be more than willing to try out an upscale of their Megatron.
@@jaydonmagan4694 "Doomsday" as it's called would benefit from slight retooling for the upscale but check out a review. Clean robot mode, great articulation and pretty good engineering. Maybe they became "gun-shy" lol

I feel like you should have included some comparisons with the Transform Element one as I feel a lot of people got that over MP-44 when the two were coming out
I genuinely don’t know whether this or OP leader is better. They both look amazing in robot mode but this figure has more articulation. However in Truck mode, OP leader looks better.

Amazing figure though, time to replace Optimus AGAIN.
FYI with the legs there are two tabs that are a bit tricky to push into their respective slots but if you manage to do it correctly the back tires have a lot more clearance and the truck rolls just fine!!!

I really hope magic square does a masterpiece megatron based on their small megatron but with a more flat chest bit. That would be amazing. I have mp-36 and I love it but if MS makes theirs, I can actually play with it and transform it more often.

G1 toon accurate delicious!!!! I already have MP10 which is good enough for me…. 44 is aight but not worth the price. THIS is different. I’m getting it if it’s not too pricy
It's not but the shipping cost adds to the price. I think I paid like $120 for him and that included shipping cost. He looks great but is very cheap feeling considering the plastic and no paint application. I still love my MP-01 and MP-10 Optimus Prime though. Couldn't justify the price for MP-44 as that was just way too expensive. I could see why it's expensive, paint, trailer, accessories and the electronics in him but, I just couldn't do it. Here's hoping Toyhax will put it some decals for him as he's very plain looking.

I have the MP-44 but bought it two years after it was first released and got hit with the commensurate late tax, lol. With what you're getting for $100 USD, the Magic Square is a very, very attractive option.
This guy looks like he actually rivals Optus Pexus in terms of poseability. That in combination with the (relatively) low price point just might push me towards a purchase.
My main qualm is how he has faux roof lights in robot mode while the real ones are visible on his back panels, but hey, on the other hand, his ab grill is the actual truck grill! Also I like how his feet don't stick out in truck mode.

Nice video. one thing, you have miss transformed the legs, that is why its not enough clarence, this is also very fiddely to get right. there is a mushroom peg behind the back wheel
I once had the Transform Element. He was nice, not too complicated to transform, but it had serious clearance issues when transforming. I do have the official MP Nemesis Prime 3.0. He's very complicated to transform, but I could do it with just the instructions with ease. So, how this MS will turn out? ...
... So, looks not harder than MP-10 to transform! Plus the fact that for both the bot and truck mode, *the same grill is used* is a miracle in itself.
What I am hoping is Magic Square makes a Voyager version of this that would scale with the current SS line. That would be a heavenly dream come true.

I will be selling my MP44 and getting this, but only if it’s re-released with paint. I love that it isn’t a nightmare but that’s no excuse for the finish looking budget.
It's because it's nylon plastic, doesn't hold paint well.
I'd say one possible engineering solution for the trailer hitch would be to attach it to an inner panel on the left side for one kind and the right for the other and flip out the one you want.
Though I think that it would also be fine if they had extra slots so it could store somewhere either inside his guts or inside or on the leg just so you don't loose it. I don't tend to use the trailers - they just go in a draw heck I really should slip a piece of paper inside them to say what they are as I have so many of the (not that useful) things now.
this prime looks sick, but still i think that's kind of a bummer that the matrix ain't painted, rlly hope they come up with a new version with some ''improvements''

To be honest, I think the ab-crunch is actually better on this compared to the og Light of Freedom, with that the hinge was metal, so it was a little more noticeable compared to this which I think looks overall better.
They did do a megatron, but it wasn’t pretty, to my knowledge it hasent been up scaled yet, but that might actualy help the figure a bit

The fully chromed matrix is reminiscent of how the matrix looked in Beast wars before it was broken. Alternate universe where Beast wars never happened perhaps? 🤔 obviously not the reason why it’s fully chrome I just thought it was a neat connection lol
I think you may need to fiddle with the cab panels a bit to get it perfect, as well as the wheel clearance at the back. The feet may just need to be fiddled with a bit. I am planning to grab this guy as I already have the legends scale figure and I love it, so as one of my last masterpiece scale will be amazing

its really good prime, but i think the mp-44 looks better porportionally, i just bought a 4th party mp-44 which is pretty good but this is probably better option since i doubt most people would agree with me, i think the chest is too rectangular imo

The figure is good but I already have the transform element version and I actually prefer that actually
TE-01 weighs 3x this and has much better build quality too. I wished this wasn't all cheap plastic.
I personally like Mp44 (4th party backpack less ver.) prime more for “accuracy” LoP looks more like the IDW comic prime with the more thick thighs and big chest and ankles while IMO MP44 looks more film accurate however I think Transform Element looks the most cartoon accurate with its blocks brick legs
I would love to see it come with Carley and the other figurines that was with MP44.

To be fair, back when MP44 was released, almost every masterpiece style of figure was awful, TT and 3P were all overengineering the figures. Thank God they have chill out and now we can get beautiful pieces without the nightmareish transformations.
I agree back when MP44 came out it was really good but in comparison to other competition nowadays I think it falls short :(

TE-01 was the best prime in my book without factoring in price and I've seen it as low as $75. It depends if you appreciate heft. It has diecast parts and just feels solid. I thought I had purchased my last prime and this one shows up. Don't think you can go wrong with either of them.

if you don't have enough money then go for TE-01, if you like posing your figures or like G1 accuracy then go for MS-02
I find those tabs sticking out of the inner arms extremely distracting. Probably a side effect of upscaling a formerly legends scale figure.
