  • The Deps Cover Scat is a newer lure that is reminds me a lot of a Yamamoto Senko. They are both do nothing lures that catch a lot of bass!

Soft plastic lures are some of the most consistent lures to go out and catch bass. I have heard a lot of hype over the last year about this lure and today I decided to test it out myself.
BassFishingHQ is dedicated to teaching people how to catch more and bigger bass. I will go over different bass fishing tips & techniques that will put more fish in the boat or on the shore. Whether you are just starting out or a seasoned tournament angler, my goal is to help you catch more bass.

I was fishing a large pond that has several big rocks under water that tend to snag my line. So I casted a weightless senko a little too close to those rocks (just past them). Then retrieved the senko rapidly so it would be on top water and not get snagged as it returned to me past the rocks. A big old bass attacked it like I was fishing a frog!

Man, glad I'm not the only one wrapping lines from one rod around another rod. Had a total scat show on my kayak yesterday morning. Recently found your channel. Now is my favorite. Thanks for keeping it real there man. Especially love you conceptual vids. I now know the difference between coontail and milfoil. Which means alot to me for some reason. I lost a $35 swimbait once when I got the braid from one rod wrapped around the mono leader on the swimbait. Apparently, the braid just sawed right through 20# Big Game. I watched helplessly as $35 sunk slowly into 20' of water.

I was a sceptic at first but after finally putting one on for the first time after I could not get bit on other plastics that should have worked, it was like flipping a switch and the bite turned on like nearly every cast in the area I was trial testing it. Since then it has landed so many bass both LM and SM in the States as well as Mexico Bass lakes. We now stock every size and color available and for good reason, they flat out work!

Cool review, Tyler! I actually caught a 5.8 pound largemouth from shore on the 3.5 cover scat. She was on a bed and full of eggs, which surprised me because it was mid May and I thought all the fish in the pond were done spawning. I’m in Eastern North Carolina and the spawn was pretty much over by the end of March in the small ponds I fish.

For those of you wondering about ideal hook size:
I use a 3/0 Owner Haymaker EWG for the 3.5" Cover Scat. Great hookup ratio, less rigidity in the bulbous section of the bait which results in more action, and the bait's plastic doesn't tear as much. There is no need to run anything bigger, and running the smallest hook possible reduces the chances of gut hooking the fish - believe me when I say they swallow this thing. The Deps Japan website recommends 1/0-2/0 for the smallest one, 3/0 for the medium one, and 6/0/-7/0 for the big one.
The Fish Arrow Heavy Poop is a similar JDM lure but their plastic is significantly more dense and not in a salty way, so even though the 3.6" poop is roughly the same size as the 3.5" Deps, a 5/0-6/0 hook works best.
I find that if you're going for a slower fall/more subtle presentation/top water versatility, go with the Deps.
If you want a more streamlined fall/more aggressive fleeing crawfish action on the bottom, go with the heavy poop.
He's right about the hard hookset. I use a 7'3" MH Fast rod with braid to a fluoro leader. Reel up all my slack and wack em.

Different is always the key! I actually use YT a lot to find older trends. For example if I see that coming into the 23 season some particular bait or a handful are being hard promoted and everyone is like "this is the one!" I cross those off (mostly) and start jumping back in time to see what was hot in 2018-2020 and I throw that. Show them something different! If YT loves x, then a ton of people will be buying and throwing X and I want to show the fish C. Tight lines!

It has replaced the senko for me. I'm to impatient these day for a slow sink line watching thing, and the way I fish, and I have found these as a compromise for me, when the senko bite is on. They sink faster and are like you said more versatile. It's still a "situation" bait like the senko but a lot more versatile. And they bite it. We like the 4 in best on clearlake but have found the medium size works better on the deeper Clearwater nor cal lakes. Cheers good review
