  • OMG... This is so well made, it is ridiculous. How did they do this? A lot of LOVE obviously. Thank you for recommending this video. It was really fun to see them. So much youth, courage and hardship. Hope you guys enjoy it. I surely did.

What you said about them being good and the dreadful things said against them that quote come's to mind 'The nail that stick out gets hammered the most' They were different and I think a lot of it was jealousy because deep down they knew Bangtan Sonyeondan were not only different but good therefore they were a threat. So the only thing they could do was hit them in any way they could to try to discredit and belittle them. The taking down the opposition before it could gain ground, root and take off attack.

Yea! This is such a great series! And your perspective adds so much. I really appreciate that they weave BTS' story into a bit of Korean history & k-pop context throughout the series. As someone unfamiliar with any of that, it helped me so much to learn & understand more. BTS was my introduction to Korean music in general, so I knew nothing of the K-pop industry, K-dramas, or anything, total ignorance on my part & I'm ashamed to admit that. I'm so grateful for BTS' contribution to opening my eyes & also Korean reactors like yourself, DKDKTV, & others, who are so willing to share their knowledge & experience with the rest of us. I would love to watch your project as it unfolds.
    Thank you. 💜

They are mostly funny clips from the era the episode covered, but I feel like they are just as important in understanding BTS's story as people gravitate towards them because of their personality and relatability

i would love to watch a video detailing the history of kpop and kmedia in general! it amazes me how much sk has changed in such a short amount of time.
and youre right, bang pd really had so much faith and trust in them. its beautiful to see how much he believed in them and encouraged them to blossom into such beautiful artists. the way he put bts together was amazing and fateful, with the amount of foresight he had. he was imbuing these kids with the spirit to dominate the music industry from very, very early years, even when they had nothing to speak of. theres one letter he wrote to them that they read during their first(?) bon voyage if i remember correctly? that was incredibly touching. they had just begun to gain some amount of global popularity at that time. the letter is included in this rise of bangtan series during a later episode. the first time i watched them read his letter i really got goosebumps. they all shared a collective goal and a united vision, knowingly or unknowingly they ran towards being the #1 group in the world.

Just so you know there is deleted scenes and bonus content for every episode (although the first two episode I think only have deleted content).
Anessa did so well making this series. With what she had for videos and stuff to make to give understanding about Korea, Kpop and BTS, it was so well made.
I agree BangPD was amazing and put a lot of trust into the boys. I don't think he was looking for just how talented they were, but character was also very important.
I agree that with how "uneven" I guess you could say with some being on different level in different categories like singing and dancing and were amazing performers. They all have grown so much over the years that now I would argue they that they all are pretty much at the same level in most of the areas. Yes, there are some categories some will be more polished in, but they all have been and are still working hard to improve themselves.
It amazes me that Suga danced so well even back then, especially with his shoulder injury (which he didn't tell anyone at the time. Idk when he told them, but it was a while, I believe).
RM did get so much hate for his look (and Jhope) it was ridiculous. I lot of people were saying he was culture appropriating (especially hair styles) but for RM he was an underground rapper and very influenced by western hip pop. He wasn't appropriating, he was inspired and influenced by it. Unless it is a special hair due for a culture ceremony, I don't really think you can appropriate hair dues (if people will be honest most hair dues in the west didn't start in the west. Most came from other countries because the west was made from immigrants). Just my opinion.
Anyways this was long lol. Thanks for reacting and can't wait for the other series (and if you want the extra content for each episode).

The criticism about hairstyles is not a Western critique. I'm African and I think so too. With RM, and BTS, I always viewed it as a misguided way of following in the steps of the people you look up to. Hiphop was never about the hairtyles and the jewellery but a form of self expression and as they've grown, i think they've realised that. BUT what we're not gonna do is pretend like the k-industry doesn't continue to look down on black people, be racist, perpetuate stereotypes and participate in blackface and profit out of using our image as an aesthetic while disrespecting that culture . The long standing history of black hairstyles being considered unprofessional but cool and acceptable on people like Kim Kardashian. That is the history that informs the criticism. Also, braids and across do have historical meaning. Please take the time to educate yourself on these issues and try to see where people come from instead of dismissing them as sensitive. It's not fun to dunk on people. And all the criticism RM received at the time was from other Koreans.

So happy that you're checking this docu-series out. It's long and such a commitment that I didn't even think to request it. I'm glad someone did though. It's one of my fave documentary-style/guide video about BTS. I think I binge watched all of it in two or three days as a baby ARMY. It was all so fascinating and it was the first guide that gave some context about some Korean and k-pop history and culture. Like any documentary, I had to go do some research on my own to find out more but it was a good jump off point so I knew what sort of things to look up. It's really well done and fun to watch. It's good that you enjoyed it too. Your perspectives are always fun to hear about. I'm so new to BTS still so it's cool to hear about someone's first impressions who was around when they debuted.
Also, don't worry I always giggle when I see that one awkward clip of RM talking about "dancing is cool but rap is cooler". He's so endearing and precious that I have to laugh no matter how often I see it lol. It nice to see the dorky, youthful side of him when he lets go of the responsible leader image for a moment. Both sides of him are wonderful but it's nice seeing that he isnt too bogged down by his role and he could be an oddball teen too.
By the way, that sounds like an interesting passion project idea. I'd be curious to know more about the industry, culture, history, etc.

The South Korean education problem is huge they have the highest rate of child sudice we thought it was bad with Japan but South Korea over took Japan. Is that really something one should be supporting? It also shows the way the children are taught is not working if they have to go to all these extra class just to get into a good university. Quality over Quantity should be the benchmark. Critical Thinking over rote learning as rote as rote learning doesn't teach you how to work something out and why something works or doesn't work.
BTS even spoke about the South Korean education system in one of their songs and also in the pressure that South Korean society puts on young people.

    • @komerican-og
      @komerican-og  ปีที่แล้ว +8

We know it is a problem and it is terrible, but you can not stop desire. They tried everything. They made it illegal for kids to attend extra classes. At different levels. At one point it was altogether illegal. Then what happened was that only the rich kids who can afford private tutors got the advantage. These tutors were paid huge sums of money since it was illegal. And normal people could not afford to take chances. After years of trying, people were mad that the so-called SKY universities entrance was dominated by kids from rich families. This led to legislative changes so that the test questions were based on subjects that were available on Educational Channel Broadcast Classes only. This made the test easier. However, this made tutors more important. They taught kids 'techniques' of taking tests. Even extra smart kid could not be identified because the test became too easy. So this didn't really work either. I mean they tried everything. However, the competitive nature could not be subdued. So, it is where it is today and they are still trying. Please do not make an easy judgment. It is a complicated matter. As I have said, I am very sad that Koreans are this competitive. Education was the only way out of poverty and a method of survival for many. Things are getting better but if everyone wants the same thing and is willing to sacrifice themselves to get it, it is almost impossible to control. Just few generation ago, people were eating Pine tree bark to survive. It is a sad history and the sadness still goes on. However, some respect for what Koreans have accomplished in such a short time might be nice. They are conscious of these problems and have been trying to remedy it, for very long time. No culture is perfect. I am just glad that these things are getting better.

Start young does help but it's the extremeness of the system that's unhealthy and causing huge issues. I don't know what 'Football Accademies that reporter was talking about but here in the UK there are very strict rules to protect children. I wouldn't allow my 13year old girl to move in with complete strangers where I was unable to see what she was doing and how she was being treated. Were are the child Protection law? The safe guarding of children? Girls as young as 13 debuting sorry but they are still children and dressed like they are going to be working on the streets no thank you. Young boys and girls forced into unhealthy eating patterns in order to please someone else. Sorry this is not right it's dangerous to the child physical and mental well being. Parents what are you doing? Being told you can't go home unless you reduce a certain amount of weight that's Blackmail and kidnapping.
Remember someone asked Jin on a vlive that she was told she was too old by a kpop company because she was 18 Jin said she was not too old as he was 20year old, when he became a trainee.'

I also do not think it is healthy either. I hated what my children had to go through to go to college. Hell... literally. I also have stated in my video in the past about how I hated Girl's Generation when I first saw them because they were too young. I felt they were mimicking the Japanese Lolita thing. So I get where you are coming from. However, it does not change the fact that there are ballet dancers, pianists, gymnasts, and myriads of other fields that require you to start as a child. For some, their career ends during their teens. Otherwise, you just do not have a chance. Koreans are hardwired to go full steam if they really want to do something. I stop being judgmental because I live here. It is a norm here. For example, I am sad that my children did not have much of a childhood, comparatively. However, they found their place and do not feel that they have lost much. Because so did everyone else. I know it is difficult to understand. I still struggle with it myself. One thing is clear, there are cultural differences and I often feel so sad as a Korean that we had to and is still this way.

So many kids here don't love studying. They would choose University and department according to their score, rather than their love or aptitude. It is so sad. I truly wish for these kids success.. because they are good hard working kids who love what they do. My kids went to good school but I always worry what if they hate what they do. I really hope not.

Oh, by the way, it is awesome that you played for your country. What a great thing to do. That must have taken a lot of hard work. You should be very proud to have represented your country.

While I am happy K-pop is now on the map, Prior to BTS K-pop was niche in the us/European sites, at best. You were in America, tell me, prior to 2014 how popular do YOU remember K-pop being? I resent this film letting on and riding BTSs coat tails. Yes they all live together during training, but I bet the ones in the “big 3” had better accommodations, yet they flash to all 7BTS sleeping in one room. Media play. No, BTS does NOT represent “kpop” BTS is better. “K-pop” ie the big three tried to KILL BTS/silence them. When they couldn’t Lee Soo man tried to say “if it weren’t for him there would be no BTS” THAT didnt go down so easy either. Do you know why they made vlogs and YT? Because SM had the media by the balls. BTS rarely got media play, SM threatened to boycott their artists from the media, they put plants in the fan bases to cause controversies, BigHit was broken into to search, company journalists were sent to put BTS on the spot, Artists were encouraged to call BTS out and disrespect them. All this is WELL documented. If you can’t beat them, join them, so now BTS “represents K-pop” the hell it does. The best female group btw is MAMAMOO, yet bp is shoved down everyones throat, (can’t hold a candle comparatively) listen for yourself and compare, the best female rapper is Jesse and the ladies in the Bukubuku song, not to mention those male rappers are fire as well. Sexy Nukem(sp?) is unique and has an advent guard sound. There, you have it. These mentioned I can see on the US charts. Why US you ask? Well , it’s western music like it or not. When the world is rocking out to pansori we will look to the Korean charts for validation….ok. I said my piece, and thank you so much for giving BTS a chance💜

I was watching all of it since 90's and evn before. There were many companies who had it even worse than BTS. Even the big 3 had their share of oppression from status quo of that time. I am not taking anything away from BTS and I do know of what they have faced. If you watch my reaction to fifty fifty, I briefly go into why Kpop is a story of underdogs. All big three or now big four started as underdogs and pioneered a new path. I really do respect all of them, though I often dislike many aspect of them. You should read some comments I got from Baby Monster's reaction, where I showed my distaste of YG' latest doings. One sad thing, though, once they get the power, they always seem to wield it. And not always in a nice way. Hope Bang becomes an exception. However, power always seem to corrupt in most cases.

A very ignorant take. You def sound like you’ve never even tried getting to know a handful of kpop grps but are here to make all these bold statements about the industry.
-kpop wasn’t big cuz back in those days the internet was simply not as advanced or big today. Basic common sense.
-the Big3 made kpop; all their grps still struggled with accommodation food evtg, you’d know if you heard atleast one grp talk about their trainee years before saying all this. The industry was just down right horrid then and it’s so much better now. Every grp under bighit/Hybe after bts has also availed of the privilege and it’s a good thing, I’m not sure why you’re against big companies
-music is subjective lol more ppl prefer Blackpink over Mamamoo it’s not about talent or anything. Very diff styles. The main audience is young women/teens and ofc they love girl crush/bad girl concepts

No. I can not do a better job. As I have said and written, she did a great job. However, I do not believe I was making a hole in this wonderful work. Just commenting. I also believe that being an Army does not make anyone or any of their work 'Perfect' There is no such thing. I am just reacting to what I see and what I felt based on what I know. Obviously, I am not perfect either. If you do not enjoy my content, please do not watch them. Thank you.

@@pennyyoung3997 Penny, please reconsider this criticism. I for one do not think John is “using BTS for views.” He seems genuinely interested and brings his own thoughts and perspective to his reactions. Isn’t that what reactors do? And the reason we watch them?

Wow you here his views from. Korean lens and that’s all you pick up. Some people don’t have critical thinking skills. And you are one. As some who live in Korea as a black woman. The color lens some kpop fans has of Korean is weird.
