Been an amazing car, I’ve been driving a manual since 16, so about 14 years now. 2008 model is a good one too!
Eonon ( eee-on-on) is one of the few brands I would trust in Android Head Units. The reason there are so many makes and models is the electronics are the same on all of the devices, just the facia is different for specific cars. At the tiem Android 10 was a good option, but one thing to note is these units never get updated. Also note that you should never use your main Google account on them as there is no lock screens, so anyone who gets into the car can access your account. I would not bother with these if all you are using is Carplay or Android Auto. There are a lot cheaper retrofit options to add Carplay to an existing stock head units.

Great video--helped tremendously during my purchase decision and install. I bought the dual USB as you suggested and installed it in the center console. However, I realized the dash cam takes up the other USB connection (non-CarPlay). As an electrician, do you know if I would be able to split the USB input in order to use both the dash cam and the second USB input? Thanks and cheers.
Yes I’ve came to realize the dash cam takes up a USB port too! A few options you can do, I wouldn’t recommend getting a usb splitter as that will likely cause data and charging issues, the real fix would be to install a powered USB port, you would have to get power from a 12 volt source. @@D_Spear Thank you for the quick reply! I went ahead and tried the USB splitter and it seems to be working so far. It may not provide as much power--I'm still trying to figure out if it needs more juice to power the wireless car charger--but it reads the memory card on the dash cam and the USB stick when I did the software/firmware upgrade (that's another issue). I went with the option of the center console replacement with the 2 USB extender you recommended. I then plugged in the 2021 Wireless CarPlay Carlinkit 2.0 adapter and the ZeeHoo 15W Fast Wireless Car Charger. It's not elegant with the coin tray, but everything is tucked away. The bootup and operations is still somewhat glitchy, but worth it to me to drop the phone onto the charger in the console without plugging it in. Cheers
Also... I contacted Eonon about two problems and did not seem to be resolved. The radio has next to zero reception. There are over 40 radio channels in my metro area and it will only pick up one or two. Eonon suggested updating via USB (which I did) but didn't help. Also, the GPS puck is on the dash in the corner, but the dash cam shows my coordinates as somewhere in China (I'm in the US) and the time will not update on the dash cam app or on the head unit. It's a nuisance but not a showstopper since I primarily use it for CarPlay as well.
@@gino3dots Can you please link the splitter you bought? Also two questions, I assume you connected the splitter to the non carplay usb cable, did you connect the dashcam to the charge port or the data port of the splitter? And if you connected it to the charging port, can you still charge your phone if you connect it on the port that replaced the cigarette lighter since that is connected to the data port on the splitter?
Does this help with the delay in the stereo. Mine has a second or two delay.

How do I remove the cigarette lighter to install the USB extension? I ordered this exact setup for my Mazda!
Any reasons why you didn't put the USB passthrough into the center console? Ordered mine today and like what you did with replacing the cig lighter with the Carplay USB, just wondering if you had thought about going through the center console.
Yes two reasons, I always hated opening up the center console for connecting my phone to the aux and also the cig lighter in the center console is a constant 12v, even when the car is off. I did not want to remove that one, the one I did remove was switched with the key and I rarely ever used it. The center console option would look cleaner.
@Sparky Spear First of all thank you for these great videos. I followed every bit of these videos to install Eonon R63 in my Mazda 3 2012. Similar to what @Jace Mott mentioned I ended up installing my USB in the center console and not by the shift stick. My reasoning was that in a very case if I ever need to hook up an external GPS then I wanted to keep the outer 12V port available for it. The more frequently used CarPlay cords and USB drives can be tucked away in the center console to keep rest of the area clean.
This definitely was the hardest part of the entire project as the cigarette lighter never wanted to come out and there is almost no space for you to put your hands in. After more than 2 hours struggle it all worked.
Probably a stupid question but I wanted to ask Do I have to order a special usb plug for the apple CarPlay or does it do it through the stick one?
You do not need to order any plugs for Apple CarPlay to work, it comes with a usb pig tail that dangles out of the unit. I simply purchased a usb extender to clean up the look and make it look factory and more user friendly.
Do you need your iphone plugged in to use apple car play or is it Bluetooth connected?
I noticed your dash LEDs are blue, I have a 2010 mazda 3i my dash and everything looks the same but mine is all red. Did you change that or is that just what color your dash came
So from 2010-2011 Mazda used Red LEDs for the dash. 2012-2013 they used blue, they also changed some of the silver pieces on the center console to flat black. The blue is forsure easier on the eyes.

Does your phone connect through Bluetooth or with the charger?
It can connect through both but the Apple CarPlay doesn’t work through Bluetooth, only through the Apple charger via usb

Trying to see how easy it is to replace the cig with the dual usb you got. Is that an easy task? Can't seem to find much info on how to replace it and how hard it may be. I'm upgrading from an older Eonon, looking to add CarPlay. But yea, no way I put my phone in the glove box. That's lunacy.
It’s not hard to all if you are upgrading to this unit, it is all plug and play if you buy the dual usb kit that I did. One down side is if you use the dash camera it will use up one of your USB ports, so then you will only have one open port for Apple CarPlay.
@@D_Spear First off, holy hell that was the quickest reply of all-time! Secondly, yea, I'm assuming the install will be easy. Is it easy to get to the cig port? Or do you need to remove shifter etc. I'm just concerned if I'm going to need to take it to Best Buy to get the USB dongle in there. That part isn't plug and play right? You need to actually replace the cig port with the USB you got from Amazon. Subbed for that quick response!
@@_Refurbished_ thanks Seth I really appreciate that! To get to the cig port you have to remove the cup holder and the shifter, it’s two separate plastic pieces that clip on the center console. I can’t speak of removing the shifter knob for an auto as mine is a manual 5 speed but it’s not hard at all. The hardest part is honestly just getting the cig port out, it is clipped into the hole it’s in and the clip is pretty tight. After that it’s easy, the cig port is plugged in so you can just unplug it and after you remove it there is a circular hole where it use to be, the dual USB port fits in there just right and you tighten it up with an included plastic nut. The dual usb dongle is legit plug and play. The eonon unit has two usb pig tails that just dangle and the dual USB port that I have just plugs directly into those two usb dongles.
@@D_Spear Great, I've been looking up videos to remove the center console as I kind of figured out what I would need to do after replying hah. Yea, the shift nob is the same. It just unscrews and you lift the shifter piece up. I'm pretty confident I can get it handled, if not I'll take it to a car audio place real quick to finish the job. You should buy a unit that’s made for Bose. Eonon usually makes a Bose and non Bose model.
I have a question! Is the homescreen customizable? The buttons Navi, Radio, Bluetooth etc. Can you drag them? I would like to add a Spotify button to the homescreen, is that possible? Please answer as soon as possible thanks
You can not directly change the Home Screen. With this running android there are a few hacks you can do to change it up, I wanna say it’s called an app loader but I have not tried it. Do you plan on using Apple CarPlay? If so then you can customize the Apple CarPlay hole screen.
@@D_Spear I wish to use CarPlay but only with I can connect it wirelessly with an adapter, I hate the usb connection. Also I’m trying to hook this unit up with a 4G modem so I can install a sim card
@@w8t2009 pretty sure there’s a way to do wireless Apple CarPlay with aftermarket adaptors. Yes the 4g modem is really a WiFi hotspot from the research I’ve done.

It’s holding up good, a few minor issues here and there but it’s working 100%. I plan on doing an update video to explain these issues and annoyances this weekend if you’d like to wait for that.

Does your Hey Siri and reading messages play at full volume? I can’t figure out how to lower it everything else works perfect.
Yes, when it is talking and you have Apple car play open on the radio, change the volume at the same time with your steering wheel control or Volume buttons on radio. It should show a volume slider at the bottom of the screen that is highlighted orange which will show how loud Siri and gps is.
@@D_Spear thank you I tried that but it didn’t help also the CarPlay kept acting up sometimes it wouldn’t work so I reset it see if that helps.
@@HumbertoCristobal hopefully it helps. Apple car play is usually a little glitchy in any unit or car. I’ve had two previous GM vehicles with factory Apple car play and I’ve actually had more issues with those units than this Eonon unit. I occasionally get issues with mine as well but nothing that is a constant issue and is so annoying that I regret this purchase.
@@D_Spear I appreciate it I contacted Eonon and I needed a software update. I got that installed and it now works perfectly except for a little static but 🤷🏻♂️

I just ordered this unit for my 2013 Mazda 3 and wondered what solution you used for the microphone for phone calls? Does the OEM mic still work the same or do they supply a mic for this headunit?
They supply an external mic and I can’t speak of how well it is as I didn’t install it. I really hate talking on the phone while driving.
Did you end up using this and using the OEM mic or did you use a mic included?
@@Uno943 - I fitted this unit to my 2011 Speed3 and used the supplied microphone. I attached mine to the top of the A pillar. It's out of the way but it isn't that effective especially when driving quick - I don't normally use my phone when driving anyway.
How did your install go I have a 2013 3 also
@@carpcarpenter2069 it was really straightforward and easy to do, but the only thing that worked poorly is the microphone, no matter where I placed it.
What are your thoughts after having it for a while now.
I think it’s worth it for the price point. The Apple car play is where it functions the best, very little issues with it. The android system has some occasional issues but nothing that makes me regret buying it. An important note also is I’ve had two different Chevy vehicles with Apple CarPlay, and those gave me far more issues than this unit. Pretty crazy.
Hi, did you have problems with your reverse camera, mine just says NO SIGNAL , I’ve triple checked, all connections are good, only wire that is not connected is red trigger wire which has 12v once reverse is selected but the manual doesn’t say where it connects too. Any help would be greatful,
I did not have any issues, what year is your Mazda and did you make sure to connect to the exact wires I used? I wanna say there was two black wires in the factory harness, so you gotta make sure you connect to the correct one.
And you are correct, you do not need to connect that red trigger wire.
How do you pass inspection with your tint
In Missouri you can have any level of tint in the back windows and max of 35% in the front. In my case I have 35% in front and 5% in back so I’m fully legal. Our safety inspections do not check tint, so I could have darker if I wanted, just would risk getting a $50 tint ticket.
If you get a text does it show the text message through the screen? Or like phone calls?
When your using apple CarPlay, it will show on the screen that you received a text message from “joe” . You can then click on that text and Siri will read it out to you. You can not read the text message yourself on the radio.
Can I install one of these in a automatic Mazda 3

I bought the usb cords that exchange the cig lighter and my apple carplay isn’t working. Do I have to download an app or something? Or do I have to plug my phone right into the “carplay” cord that plugs into the unit?
Make sure you have plugging into your phone into the CarPlay usb instead of the regular usb. I believe i had the same issue at first with the usb cord you bought, unplug it and plug it back in to see if that fixes the issue. If you do not have the usb cord you bought, will CarPlay work without it?
@@D_Spear I was hoping to have been able to use the 2 USB ports that I swapped for the cig lighter, but no matter what they won't work. I have resorted to completely getting rid of the apple CarPlay dongle and just plugging my phone into the CarPlay USB that comes with the system.

@@D_Spear Yes both charge my phone when I have the CarPlay dongle connected. Without it only the one works obviously. I have a feeling its the CarPlay dongle but I'm not too sure. Probably just going to go without it.
Does it dim with the headlights on?
Yes it does. You can change the settings too to how bright you want it to dim. Thanks for watching
Did the steering wheel controls work without any additional plugs/wires?
For my trim level, I only have volume, mute, mode and track change buttons and they all work without any wiring. For the track button it’s reversed for some reason but you can get into the menu of the stereo and change the settings.

I haven’t tested the Bluetooth features just yet but I know you can connect it via blue tooth and listen to music and do phone calls using Bluetooth. Can’t speak of the call quality via bluetooth. Let me know if you have any more questions!

Bluetooth works fine (mostly for music), especially *when* the CarPlay acts up. Of course you have to control from the phone, but it's a good backup option. The external mic doesn't seem to work very well even thought I connected it to the top of the A-pillar. I resorted to using my AirPods (in one ear) and avoid talking on the phone as well.

Does the display still show the ac. Mode etc?
My stock unit was just the plain Jane radio with no display so it never showed any ac controls on the display. But I can tell you that it doesn’t and won’t. You will still have the lcd display above the radio that shows ac mode in some models, not mine as it’s an isport base.
The screen is not slow for you?
It can be laggy at times. It’s an android, so it runs like an android. The Apple car play works a little better. For $250 you have to expect something that isn’t the best but I’d say for the money it’s MUCH better than the stock unit!

Thinking about getting this. For the Apple CarPlay do I have to change out the cigarette port and install the dual usb that they provided or does that just go into the cigarette port?
You do not have to buy the dual USB ports, the unit will come with two usb wires that just dangle, you can have the wires dangle out of the dash somewhere or by the glove box. The instructions state to drill a small hole into the glove box and push the wires in the glove box and connect your phone there. Seems rather inconvenient, that’s buy I bough the dual usb, which would require removing the factory cig port.

Additionally, they're two different software platforms. You can't compare specs on different platforms, as each platform requires completely different specs to perform similarly.
