Excited, as a graduate from the Narrative Medicine program at Columbia, to see this interview. I've spent close to 30 years in healthcare in a variety of capacities, as a clinical provider, funder, and educator --- Narrative Medicine has breathed new life in the practice of care! A very exciting time!

I love how Beth says that if the patient thinks the doctor doesn't care about her, she is less likely to take prescribed medications. I saw this play out on several occasions while working as an EMT. My take is that patients don't want you to be sad with them or even for them, but they do respond well to treatment when you do more listening than talking. You can see Beth in the interview that Beth is a wonderful listener. Listening...not only a necessary skill for the practice of effective medicine but also greatly needed in all aspects of our lives.

Yes Beth is helping to train many future doctors how to be the best doctors they can be and that starts with listening to the patient.

This was a fantastic interview! I love this approach. Common sense, but not common practice. I will definitely share with others.

Thank you so much. Yes unfortunately common sense is not common practice in many respects.

This should be required in all medical programs. I just shared this on my company's Slack channel. We work with professors of physical therapy and physician assistant grad programs and this discipline is so necessary. As someone who used to volunteer as a Pet Therapist in a geriatric wing of a hospital, what Dr. H says here is so true. Connecting with patients makes everything that comes after a lot easier to digest. Thank you for sharing this interview. Such important work.

Thanks for watching and sharing. Yes, hopefully we can bring more awareness of the importance of communication when treating patients and it's not all about just 'what may be physically wrong.'

Im so interested to know if either of you feel that there may be a role for someone who focuses on narrative-medicine (educating and working innovatively with clinicians at the hospitals) who does not have a clinical background ? Thank you
