I revisited this tutorial after view three years ago. Your presentation was the clincher for me buying the Brother Scan n cut. I have not regretted it. Thanks for your motivation to me and I hope it motivates others. For me, the Brother Scan n Cut is the best cutting machine. I use it for paper crafts, vinyl and fabric. I could not live without it.
OMG!!!! You are the first person that explained the scan & cut in a simple way that I understand. I bought this last year and it has been sitting and catching dust with regret that I bought it. But LOOK OUT!!! I am on the ROAD. Thank you so MUCH!!!!😀😀😀
I have the 225DXf. I place the fabric on the mat, heat n bond down first, leaving the paper backing on, then do half cut. Works like a dream also. Love your video.
I found this video and OMG learned stuff I had NO idea I could do. My scan and cut has been sitting for over a year. Bought it from a dealer and two weeks after i bought it the instructor quit and I never got one class and the Dealer never got someone else. Then six months later the Dealer went out of business. GRRR So here I am with a brand new Scan and Cut and can't do a lot as the few videos out there are not helpful and some are confusing. GRRR. Thanks Becky for this video. You are awesome.
I love my scan and cut dx. A word of advise for those who still have it in the box is take it out and use it before the warranty is expired. I didn't use mine right away but when I did it wouldn't cut completely. I took it to a class and my instructor said to have it serviced. I ended up getting a new machine from Brother because there was an issue with the calibration. The new one works great and my grandson thinks I'm an awesome grandma because we can do so many crafty things with it. 😁
I wish I did this. I had some family issues right after I got mine and did not use it for over a year. When I did use it I found it was not cutting It has sat in the box for years now. Maybe I will get it out this year

Ive not done anything yet but watching all of the videos, I cannot believe everything this machine can do. Blows my mine.
Woo hoo! I know I’m a couple of years behind you guys, but I just got a Scan N Cut DX230. I’m so happy I’ll be cutting out appliqués on this machine, and little pattern pieces like collars and facings, too! Thanks for this fabulous video, Becky! 💗
@@PowerToolsWithThread I just watched that video again. I’m pretty confused now, so I’m headed to bed; will try tomorrow with a clear head! Thanks, Becky!
I do turned hand appliqué and found using their fabric support sheets caused a lot of distortion to the cut fabric on removal from the mat. I now use a freezer paper sandwich on my fabric to stabilize prior to cutting on the low tack mat. Luv your channel!
theresa gregg , just place your fabric between 2 layers of freezer paper, wax side to each side of the fabric, it stabilizes the fabric. You will have to adjust your blade to cut.
Yesterday I happened upon your video for the machine embroidered composition book cover, and was fascinated -- because I have a new Bernina 770 with the embroidery module. And machine embroidery is totally new to me. I really learned a lot from just that one video. Plus I was drooling over your studio and all your "power tools." So... today, after I opened my newly purchased ScanNCut SDX135 Pro, I started looking at some "newbie" videos. Lo and behold, on the "up next" list, I see that YOU had a video for the ScanNCut! And the reason I got mine is the same reason you like yours - for cutting applique pieces. In my case, I designed a pillow, with applique and quilting, that features a specific camper van. After I made one for myself, everyone in my camper Facebook group wanted me to make one for them. Hmmm... I thought, how could I make this easier, rather than tracing and cutting out 12 different pieces for each pillow, over and over?? Accuquilt? Ugh, custom dies. Cricut? Not sure. And then I found the ScanNCut, which sounded like exactly what I needed. I can scan my own shapes in. Now, my machine has the autoblade that detects the material being cut. And supposedly it will cut up to 3mm of thickness. What I HOPE is that I can cut several pillows' worth of pieces at a time. I was thinking also of using Hotfix Adhesive so that I might not even have to stitch along the edges of the raw-edge applique. By any chance have you tried Hotfix? The steps you showed here are ideal for helping me see how I can proceed with my applique pillow project! Thanks. And any advice or suggestions are welcome!
I'm sold! Now I know why I should spend more and get this machine. Thanks so much for showing that process. I'll get that McKenna Ryan quilt done that's been sitting in my closet for 10 years!!
Thank you so much for this video. Over 10 years ago I was in a quilt shop and saw a beautiful Noah's Ark quilt on the wall. My friends and the owner of the shop convinced me that I could make the quilt. No problems! So I bought the kit. After looking at the instructions I put the kit in a drawer! I have a scan n cut now and after watching your video I feel more confident about cutting out all of the applique pieces to make it. Thanks again!
How fun! The SNC is a perfect tool to cut all those pieces out. Really want to up your game? Stitch them down with Simply Applique. :-) I have videos on my channel about it.
Oh you are so lovely 😊 My husband just got me one today and I’m feeling the same giddy happiness working with it as you do 😆 It really does an amazing job! Great video
Great video and explanation. I have an older Scan n Cut. I am personally tired of applique. Also don't want to be at a computer, I want to sew. I also don't care for the need to prepare fabric before cutting. But I understand the love of this method. Thank you

I love my older ScanNcut 350. I do vinyl and applique. It is a little more noisey than the new DX but that is really not a problem for me and I've used various materials to cut and now I know the setting I need for each, but I always do a little test. Becky, you are doing such good informative videos. Thank you.
Becky - Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU!! This is exactly why I purchased a Scan’n’Cut DX. I adore McKenna Ryan’s Pine Needle appliqué designs, but with my aging hands, I just couldn’t cut everything anymore. I knew the DX could do this, but knowing and doing are not synonymous. I have been haunting uTube looking for a good explanation, and yours made perfect sense.
Try florianni appliqué wonder instead of heat and bond. It’s totally amazing. I think it’s better in a lot of ways, no ironing, it is a bit expensive but I think it’s totally worth the money. Thanks dor the video😉😇
Becky, I've had my machine for about 4 days and this video is invaluable! I can finally work on my applique BOM quilt with ease. Thanks so much for your talent and knowledge.
Just get in there are start poking around. :) There are a lot of free projects on the Brother Canvas too or even inside the machine. Just start making a few simple shapes with paper on the teal low tack mat and you'd be surprised how easy it is.
I'm not a quilter but these instructions are fantastic. Your visuals are great too. I just got my machine and I'm educating myself before I pull it out of the box. Thank you!
Thank you. I have just purchased a new Innov-is XJ1 and it came with this scan and cut. I was wondering what I would use it for. Now I know. I do a lot of applique and this will be perfect for cutting out all my pieces.
Congrats on your new machine! You'll love it. I have an entire playlist on ScanNCut. You definitely need to check out how to turn that .fcm file from the SNC into an embroidery appliqué design! Check this out! GAME CHANGER!
Great Video. I have a scan and cut purchased a few years ago but found it somewhat confusing to use. You have given me the push I needed to start. Your instructions are great.
Your comment is one of the reasons I make these types of videos. When I got my first cutting machine I was intimidated by it too...and I work in computers! If I was scared of it, I can only imagine how I would feel if I didn't have a clue what button to push. It took me months to figure it out and I actually signed up for classes. Now I'm sharing a bit of that knowledge with you. If necessary, just follow the video bit-by-bit and stop it all along the way as needed. You'll get this!
I really appreciate this video! I just bought the Scan n Cut DX on sale at my local fabric store (they had a demo a year ago), but I've been reluctant to try it without some instruction! You show it how it is and to just "go forth"! I do so appreciate it! Thank-you!
Thank you so much for this Becky; so many helpful tips for when I start using my ScanNcut to cut fabric. It was really good to see how you got rid of the excess lines.
Thank you for such an easy to follow informative video. I was always scared as it looked so complicated and I am not tech savy. I quilt (beginner) and also a card maker. This looks like a great machine to have. In Australia they are so expensive so I wanted to be sure that I spent wisely. Thanks from Maleny Queensland Australia.
Hi Becky I am from the UK love your videos I have the ScanNcut I love it and a embroidery machine I quilt all so , I wish we had the quilt shop here you have I would not be a home , keep up with the videos you are a good teacher and they are great Happy New year from the U.k best wishes Carol
Thank you thank you! I was trying to figure out how to fix my patterns after scanning them in when they had all those bits around them!! This will make my life much easier 😁
Thank you for mentioning the Scan to phone for Silhouette! I had totally forgotten about that function. I have 2 Silhouette machines but have gotten into embroidery in the last year. I am just starting looking in to making things with cut fabric and came looking for information but now I will dive further into my Silhouette functions (AND the Scanner/multifunction printer) that I forgot about BEFORE I go further into possibly getting a whole new machine. Especially since I have so many programs that also do these functions.. just a few steps and spending less money:)
Can you point me to a tutorial that teaches from the basics. I would love to use canvas but don't know where to start. Thank you in advance. I love the way you described the icons in plain language. It opened up new roads for me to travel Technology!!! Us oldies will get their eventually with the help of people like you!
Nice to see a tutorial for the DX. Even though I use mine for cutting card stock I learnt a lot from this video. I never thought about saving to my computer to clean up the mat. Awesome tip! This will save me so much time from now on. TFS :)
love this thanks Becky i have just ordered the rotarty cutting blade for mine cant wait for it to cut as i have not cut any fabric so far and thats what i bought my cm900 to use for back in 2017 yeah i know lol xx thanks for this xx
Becky, You have got me saving for the Brother Disney Scanncut DX and simply applique. I have never enjoyed hand applique, just started machine applique, and I can't see doing it any other way than the way you are doing it!. I hope Brother sees what you are doing to boost thier sales and they reach out to you.
Hi,I just bought the Disney scan and cut it’s a little pricy but it comes with a Lot of goodies Just finish cutting the Disney red box so cute, go for it.
WoW! What an amazing lesson. I've owned the SNC since 2014 have one of the original models which I still use. I do not own the DX but I am going to give this method a try on my machine (saving to USB as it has no wireless on the original) I had not thought about scanning for canvas from paper patterns that's a pretty amazing deal because when you scan from your printer to pdf or image then bring it into other softwares you normally end up with a double line around each shape and have to remove them. I am definitely going to see if that double line is avoided with my older SNC and Canvas. Next, your point on using the fatter areas to lift your fabric is right on, one might have also pointed out that if they try with thinner areas it is easier to "break" that line and the shape ends up in two or more pieces :/ but it's easier to pull it up when you start in the fatter part of the shape. You've definitely gained a new subscriber in me and I'm going to recommend this video when I'm asked in the future about cutting fabric on the SNC. Thank you so much!!
I am new to this. I scanned some words I had typed in Word and this is exactly what happened - double line around everything!! How do you get rid of the double line??
I am a sewing. I always wanting to do appliqué but find it stressful cutting around small pieces. You have finally show me how easy the scan and cut can do, even with heating bond on it. Thank you so much.
i had a225 scan and cut and i couldnt get it to cut anything,,,cleaned and reglued the boards,,,it was horrible for me so i had to get rid of it,,,,and i only got the scan n cut just for applique,,,,as i have alot of the anita good designs,,,and love your vids
Thank you so much for this video. You have made me want to purchase a Scan N Cut DX. LOL I want mine to use for cutting vinyl so I can embellish my own t-shirts, like you did for the t-shirt you wore in your video.
@@PowerToolsWithThread I finally broke down and purchased my Scan N Cut DX yesterday. (I bought the Disney model.) What brand/type of heat transfer vinyl do you use to make the designs for your t-shirts? I need to purchase some vinyl so I can start making projects. I heard that different brands are harder to weed than others. Any suggestions you can make would be appreciated. If you have an affiliate link, please provide it. Thanks again for your Scan N Cut video Becky!
@@kristi8220 Congrats on your new SNC DX!! So fun! Here's a link to Cricut HTV that works very well. I stay away from the Sport Flex because that can only go onto nylon tshirts and isn't designed for cotton. Enjoy! Lots of color choices in this link. amzn.to/2SaIVFO

Question...I have arcylic template for epp how do I cut the inside areas so I have correct size and shape for me to cut out papers without seam allowance
Thank you Becky! Love your videos and helpful information, tips, and tricks! Bravo! Keep doing what you do for us and I wish you a blessed and Happy New Year!
Question, I just got a scan and cut for my birthday today. The directions only show the small tray on the back pulling out, but it looks like the larger tray on the back pulls out also, but mine is sticking on one side and the directions don’t show the second larger tray pull out.
Question about ScanN&cut( can you take an appliqué design such as MAMA and cut the letters out on this machine off of then machine embroidery design so it cuts it out prior to the embroidery? I have the hardest time cutting around the letters after I embroidery them.
Watched again, do you have a TH-cam that shows me how to make my embroidery file appliqué into a file on the scan n cut. You would be so proud of me I used my scan n cut for the first time this week. Don’t ask how long it has sat in the box. It is old
Thanks for the first video I found that actually taught me something. I have a ScanNCut CM650W. It's out of the box on a table in my sewing room, but never used. It's been there for two or three years. I'm not sure when I bought it. I love to appliqué quilts and this will make it so much more fun and faster.
ok, so I just found you...and I LOVE YOU! lol Your down to earth being is like a breath of fresh air. Very clear instructions. I have a scan N cut, but I call mine, scratchNSniff! lol I have used it maybe, maybe! 3 times, after watching you I might use it a lot more often...THANKS for a great tutorial. I am originally from Texas but have grown roots in Florida. I just subbed you! Big hugs, Elsa
Love my SNC650WX. It really struts it’s stuff when cutting a detailed Henna image from HTV. Intricate and always perfect. I also make decals for my son’s airplanes from Oracal651. Perfect. Great for appliqué too but so much more. Congrats on your new DX. Happy 2😊2🙂, Becky.
Hi Becky, I just got the scan and cut machine and I was reviewing this video on how to cut the fabric pieces and I noticed that this is different than what you are currently doing, meaning fabric down and heat & bond up, now you are doing fabric up and heat & bond down no paper, so I was wondering which one is better? Could you please do an update video and give us the better way 🙏 Thanks 😊
I'm using a teal Low Tack mat when I cut fabric side up. When I use a stickier mat (purple or gold), I put fabric side down. The rule is not to put paper or substrate like HNB on mats that have a new-sticky feel.
Gday from australia, thank you for this, i appliqué and also make makeup/toiletry bags, i have a template for these, but would make life easier if i could use a cut and scan, my question is, my pattern says cut the piece on the fold, is this possible to do on the brother cut and scan.hope this makes sense..LOL, have an awesome day xx
I would trace the pattern to a separate sheet of paper two times (once mirrored) and join the sides in the center for a completed pattern piece. Then scan it. The SNC doesn't like open-ended lines so you need to have the full pattern piece to scan. But it will do what you need easy peasy.
Do you have any down loadable material listing the steps or directions? I’ve lost sone of my vision and it would help me greatly. I ordered a book on line but it wasn’t very clear yo me. Thank you.
I convert the file from the scan and cut into an embroidery design and let my embroidery machine stitch it down. See any of my videos on snapplique to see how it is done.
Hey Becky, I got a Hawaian applique piece off Etsy. It is a pdf. I understand the different directions for each type fusible and basically how to use the Scan N Cut. However, my Etsy-purchased document is a pdf. I cannot bring that into Canvas Workspace. Will I need to get my design prepared in another program, print it out, and have the ScanNCut scan the design rather than sending it over through Canvas Workspace? Or, how would you suggest going about getting my Hawaian applique cut out on fabric. FYI: It is about 11-1/2" square to fit onto a 12" block. I have the Disney 225 DX, not the blue one, but the red one - which is a total other story because I think I was really wanting the blue one. oh well.
Print out the PDF pattern pieces and then scan them into the scanning cut.. If the pieces overlap then Trace them out individually on printer paper and then scan them in. You can cut from those scans. You will love that red machine it's a very good one.
Absolutely! Depending on the size of course since the limits of the standard mat are 12"x12". This machine will cut cork and any material up to 3mm in thickness.
Becky -- Loved your presentation and although I have a Silhouette Cameo, I want to invest in a ScanNCut. Most of my project will be smaller than a bed quilt and so I love the ability to put multiple fabrics with the shapes to cut on the same mat. Since new models are coming out, can you recommend the best model for this type of ScanNCut? Thanks!
Hi Jenny my advice to you is go with what your budget can afford i have cm900 and sdx900 the smaller one and love them both and both are good for fabric keep in mind the dx ranges have just had a new blade come out the rotary cutting blade that looks fab cant wait for it to arrive happy crafting hun jk
I don't have a scan n cut yet but I would like to buy everything I will need for fabric appliques at the same time. (this is going to be my Christmas present) I've heard I need a thin fabric cutter blade, a fabric mat, a cutter holder, a rotary cutter blade. What do I really need to get started?
Normally the standard black blade or the gold fabric blade will work for cutting quilting cottons on the SNC. The rotary blade isn't needed unless you'll be cutting cork, felt, wool, or other odd fabric. You really don't need a rotary blade (I have one and have never used it). You also don't need the Gold fabric mat. Again, I use that mat for the odd thicker fabrics like cork or felt. The gold mat is really too sticky for quilting cottons. I've learned over time to use the Auqa Low Tack mat or the Purple Standard Tack Mat.
Hi Becky. Happy New Year from Indiana. Thanks so much for the videos that you make. I've been quilting for a couple years and have done some applique but have wanted to do more. Cutting by hand is a bore and takes too much time. My brain won't stay interested...it starts planning and designing all the future things it wants to make. lol ;) Was trying to decide between the big 3 and stumbled across your channel....LOVE IT!!! You're such a hoot!! Well, thanks to your information, I have decided that SNC DX225 is perfect for my needs, wishes and future dreams. I want to start with applique but know I will probably get into vinyl for some wall decor and as the grand-babies arrive I'm sure we will get into all kinds of fun crafts. Now...to save the money and go visit local dealer in town that I never knew was here. Currently using a Babylock Solaris & Palette 11 and hope it will work with my what I have. I hate to buy more software if it isn't needed. Learning one piece of software is enough. LOL

Glad it was helpful!
You have the best instructional videos ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️. Thank you
I'm not a quilter but these instructions are fantastic.
Thank-you!
Yay! Mission accomplished! Please share any successes in our FB group!
Very informative video. I need to get my Scan N Cut back out.
Thank you so much for this Becky; so many helpful tips for when I start using my ScanNcut to cut fabric. It was really good to see how you got rid of the excess lines.
Thank you, thank you, thank you! I haven’t gotten mine out of the box yet, but this will help me. Your videos are GREAT!!
I'm so glad you found it helpful. Once you get the hang of the SNC, you'll begin to look at applique quilts in an entire new light. Happy New Year!
This is the best video I have found on scan and cut thank you 👍
Thank you for such an easy to follow informative video. I was always scared as it looked so complicated and I am not tech savy. I quilt (beginner) and also a card maker. This looks like a great machine to have. In Australia they are so expensive so I wanted to be sure that I spent wisely. Thanks from Maleny Queensland Australia.
Hi Becky I am from the UK love your videos I have the ScanNcut I love it and a
embroidery machine I quilt all so , I wish we had the quilt shop here you have
I would not be a home , keep up with the videos you are a good teacher and they are great
Happy New year from the U.k best wishes
Carol
Thank you! Such a nice comment. :)
Thank you thank you! I was trying to figure out how to fix my patterns after scanning them in when they had all those bits around them!! This will make my life much easier 😁
I love all of your video's .... you explain everything perfectly!
If you check my video series on the Howl-le-lujah quilt or Warmest Wishes, I show step by step how to use the Canvas and the SNC. Good luck!
You should be able to cut quilting cottons with the regular blade. I don't have a rotary blade it and works great!
Hi,I just bought the Disney scan and cut it’s a little pricy but it comes with a
Lot of goodies Just finish cutting the Disney red box so cute, go for it.
Please keep scan n cut videos coming
i had a225 scan and cut and i couldnt get it to cut anything,,,cleaned and reglued the boards,,,it was horrible for me so i had to get rid of it,,,,and i only got the scan n cut just for applique,,,,as i have alot of the anita good designs,,,and love your vids
I use my scan n cut for applique also love it don't really use it for paper or anything else mostly for sewing love it so much
Thank you so much for this video. You have made me want to purchase a Scan N Cut DX. LOL I want mine to use for cutting vinyl so I can embellish my own t-shirts, like you did for the t-shirt you wore in your video.
That's great! You'll love it!
Great tips
love my scan n cut I have a cricut and never used since I got my scan n cut and now I have the scan n cut dx i used my scan n cut dx for all my applique patterns I mostly use my scan n cut for fabric and sew
You are fantastic at explaining things! Thank you!
I want one now
u do well on your video info. very thorough thanku
Thank you! Great tip for clearing the mat!
You are so welcome!
applique quilts are my favorite too, just ordered a scan & cut
Question...I have arcylic template for epp how do I cut the inside areas so I have correct size and shape for me to cut out papers without seam allowance
I'm sorry Sharon, but I've never done that so I can't be of any help. Recommend scanning in each piece and then adding seam allowance on the SNC.
Thank you Becky! Love your videos and helpful information, tips, and tricks! Bravo! Keep doing what you do for us and I wish you a blessed and Happy New Year!
Great tutorial . Good ways to use scan n cut canvas
Question, I just got a scan and cut for my birthday today. The directions only show the small tray on the back pulling out, but it looks like the larger tray on the back pulls out also, but mine is sticking on one side and the directions don’t show the second larger tray pull out.
I'm not sure. Maybe that depends on the model? Mine has the smaller tray that pulls out on the back of the machine. I never use it. Happy Birthday!
Question about ScanN&cut( can you take an appliqué design such as MAMA and cut the letters out on this machine off of then machine embroidery design so it cuts it out prior to the embroidery? I have the hardest time cutting around the letters after I embroidery them.
Yes. You can scan in the paper drawing and it will cut it out perfectly. 😊
Now I want one!! Thanks
Great tutorial.
Great teaching as always! I have on the fence scout buying a cutting machine. You helped a lot!😊
Awesome 👏🏾
Well Hi! Welcome to the fray! Glad you're here. :)
excellet presentation. Thanks!
Wow! You're a SNC Super Star! As I said in the video, I know the SNC can do so much more that what I use it for so I'm so happy you shared. Thank you!
Great video thanks
That was awesome I have hardly use my Scan n Cut
Hi Becky, I just got the scan and cut machine and I was reviewing this video on how to cut the fabric pieces and I noticed that this is different than what you are currently doing, meaning fabric down and heat & bond up, now you are doing fabric up and heat & bond down no paper, so I was wondering which one is better? Could you please do an update video and give us the better way 🙏
Thanks 😊
I'm using a teal Low Tack mat when I cut fabric side up. When I use a stickier mat (purple or gold), I put fabric side down. The rule is not to put paper or substrate like HNB on mats that have a new-sticky feel.
@@PowerToolsWithThread
Ok, are you using the fabric blade or the regular blade to cut the fabric with the heat and bond?
Thank you
I love your intro music
@@PowerToolsWithThread thank you
Do you have any down loadable material listing the steps or directions? I’ve lost sone of my vision and it would help me greatly. I ordered a book on line but it wasn’t very clear yo me. Thank you.
I'm sorry I don't. But I usually talk through everything so you might type the instructions as you watch a video.
Do you have to sew around each letter after you iron it on the quilt?
I convert the file from the scan and cut into an embroidery design and let my embroidery machine stitch it down. See any of my videos on snapplique to see how it is done.
Enjoyed watching. Happy New Year!
You will love that red machine it's a very good one.
can I scan a purse pattern piece and cut it out? that is the only reason I would buy one.
Absolutely! Depending on the size of course since the limits of the standard mat are 12"x12". This machine will cut cork and any material up to 3mm in thickness.
Thank you! I made my own purse pattern! Yea!
I smiled because that's what I'm using mine for right now. Luna pouches from Kandou Patterns. Huge time saver!!!
@@PowerToolsWithThread Would you put HNB on the back of the cork and cut HNB side down?
@@PowerToolsWithThread Thank you!!!
LOL
Great video.
Isn’t there a fabric mat? I’m lost where you put done the sticky paper with the green backing? Is this sold by brother?
Yay! Who knew I would EVER need this. Nice to have an Expert SNC friend! (-: Great tut!
Glad it was helpful! You got this Joy!
