How to Adjust the Trigger Pulls | British Side-by-Side Shotguns | MidwayUSA

  • Trigger pulls on shotguns are a whole lot more important than most people think. You see the brain calculates the lead based on what it thinks the trigger pulls are and it sends a message to the muscles to pull. Now if the trigger pulls are lighter or heavier than what the brain expects then the gun is going to go off earlier or later than planned. If it goes off earlier we shoot in front of the target. If it goes off later we shoot behind the target. So having good trigger pulls on shotguns is really really important. Watch along as Jack Rowe and Larry Potterfield, Founder and CEO of MidwayUSA, demonstrate how to adjust the trigger pulls on a side by side shotgun.

    It's a good Idea for a series, He won't live forever, and at least this way some of the knowledge he has gathered over the many years will live on. Important to document as much of the "old ways" as we can, we have already lost too much.

    I really enjoy watching someone who moves so deliberately and makes no excess movements.

    Most all of the old master smiths are gone now. Jack is as old school as they get. I have a double Ithaca I am going to try his method on. Thanks jack...

    I just love to see the skills of these gunsmiths. I am very fortunate that the guy I go to for repairs and servicing served his apprentice at Dickson of Edinburgh.

    It is absolutely essential that you pay attention to the shape of the notch on the hammer. It must be flat and not undercut at its base , otherwise the sear will lock and be unaffected by its machined angle. The sear must slide across a flat surface.

    I hare to question the master here but,
    If the trigger pull is say 4lbs. Then at 4lbs on the trigger, the gun goes bang. It shouldnt matter if the leverage is one inch or one foot, the gun fires at 4lbs on the trigger..

      It’s so you get even pressure across the whole length of the groove. Carpenters screw divers tend to only load up on each end and can deform the screw head. Mostly to keep the cosmetics of the screw nice on high dollars firearms.

      +W.F. Bentley Larry has a wide variety of skills, sort of a jack of all trades master of non although he is very good at what he does. Jack's skills are specific to British shotguns and British shotguns alone

    • @hometownmedic7355
      @hometownmedic7355 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      MrcabooseVG Close, but not quite. His skills were specific to box lock and side lock shotguns, regardless of where they were manufactured(because it doesn’t matter). A Spanish side lock and an English side lock of the same period aren’t different enough to notice, much less slow a master gunsmith down even a step. Your overall point is valid though. Larry could build a gun basically from scratch, see nearly perfect safari rifle series, whereas Jack might have to do some reading and tinkering to be half as good with anything else besides a double.

    The Brit is a good smith, but he doesn't really make an entertaining video.
