  • Today we’re going to be looking at the M5 Paper, an ESP32 based tablet-style development board with a 4.7” e-ink touch display. The combination of a WiFi-enabled tablet with accessible IO as well as an ultra-low power consumption touch display really opens up a world of possibilities for home automation, dashboards, monitoring and data logging.

    Tablet people want: Ipad Pro Max😯
    Tablet that I want: M5 paper😂

      iPad Pro max is not a real thing and dawg you aren’t special for wanting an e ink tablet, they’re dope and I know plenty of regular dudes and tech buffs that want them

      @@christianmccauley7340 obviously I also want an iPad pro max. But when you use an iPad you do not know anything about what is happening in the background. But you can program and you can know what's happening inside, how the technology works in this kind of eink tablet. iPad Pro Max will fulfill our day to day life uses where m5 paper will fulfill our curiosity.

    This is ideal for a home console. a couple of these around the house would be ideal. I'm going to look into Bluetoothing my heating controls for use with this.

      Yeah they’re great, it’s just a pity they’re still quite expensive!

      @@MichaelKlements Yeah 70 quid is a bit expensive for what it is I suppose. I'm thinking of using one or two as main hub's and using the m5 core's as access nodes for other spots. Considering alternatives tend to come with no casing or power and the need for RPis or Arduino separately. I can swallow the 70 quid price tag.

      I definitely agree with you on this. These are at least standalone devices, ready to be used. If you use a Pi or Arduino then you’ve still got to worry about cases, batteries, displays, buttons/inputs, charging circuits etc.. They’ll likely land up being comparable in the end

    By the way I have a question. It's based on esp32. So the touchscreen display should be functioning much more faster the video shows. Can you explain what is the problem of it?

    • @zaiso23
      @zaiso23 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      E-Ink displays are always slow with screen updates. Same for E-Books (Kindle, Tolino, etc.)

    • @MichaelKlements
      @MichaelKlements  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's not the esp32 that is slow, it's the updating of the e-ink display, as Heinzable has said. This display is actually pretty fast for an e-ink, I've got some other displays which take 15-20 seconds to do a full refresh. Have a look at my TH-cam subscriber counter video, that display takes significantly longer to update.

    • @MichaelKlements
      @MichaelKlements  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The ESP32 doesn't have enough power or memory to load full web pages. You would be able to load basic texted based html pages though.
