    The smart thing to do with this is to take the same photo and make subtle and terrifying changes to it over the course of the entire two years to make the person feel like they're going insane or the thing is haunted.

      @@Melian_Dialogue Dude, you and all the people saying "don't make your mom think she's got memory/congnitive issues, that's a mean thing to do" can really shut up. Don't you realise this kind of "joke" can be played on almost anybody? It's not made extra funny just because you do it to an older person. Literally most normal people aren't thinking that, I've only seen it mentioned in comments criticising the joke!
      There are some "stars" that need to line up for this to work, namely you need someone who would appreciate such a gift in the first place, and actually still puts up pictures around the house, but someone that's not gonna fuss over matching styles and reframing the photo, etc etc. A mom makes perfect sense for this kind of thing... and sure you get some wholesome points for it too, but the joke works just as well if it were some 22 y/o doing it to their 49 y/o mom, no need to have connotations of "going senile". You and others are just fabricating that, because it seems you can't fathom such a joke being ok?

    • @wiiu7640
      @wiiu7640 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@kurtlamprecht93 No you haven't. The reason why you couldn't store all your memories in your house is because you were unable to frame every picture. technically you can have a photo album or box of photos, but what I'm saying is very different. You don't really have all of your memories when it's in a box or the hard drive of a computer. Having an e-inc display for photos gives you some of those memories back because otherwise they would be collecting dust or taking up storage on your phone or something like that. You are right, but if you're going to go that far you could easily say that the only place where all of your memories are stored is your brain.

    I like your attempt at trying to do a kind of profiling of the displayed colors through photographing it at around 04:55 - Color calibration and color management is a deep rabbit hole and I appreciate you including this in the video. I think the flaw was that what you did would be only useful at providing the palette for a soft proofing profile on your LC or Oled display of your computer. To extract the display-able colors you would have to measure them under a known light source and also correct for the reflectance of the display (this is why your black levels where off and looked washed out). Nonetheless a very exciting project 😍👍

    • @CNLohr
      @CNLohr  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think the biggest issue was that I cannot accurately display the colors because they are not as vivid. So, doing it the way I landed on provides the "most" vividness that can be done without supersaturation.

    • @shompy12
      @shompy12 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes exactly. This is because the gamut volume of the display is far smaller because it is based on subtractive color science and not additive. Meaning it can only reflect light and not produce it like say an Oled panel. This is also why printing color spaces are narrower than display color spaces. So soft proofing is used on the display to simulate the narrower space of a printing medium. Additionally, you are basically working with a kind of 3bit display 😂 so only 1 bit for brightness info and 2bits for the shades and then using dithering to trick the eye into seeing colors that are not there. But actually using the palette you derived from the picture you took in the conversion algorithm would basically be a way to soft proof or simulate, what the final picture would look under the specific lighting conditions you took the photo under. So you could technically use it in extreme cases to then adjust the original picture (say you observed severe banding on the eInk display and wanted to adjust the picture before converting it again), then simulate the output on your pc monitor without the need to send it to your mum to put it on the display, maybe tweak it again and then use the 'optimal' palette on the picture for the final conversion. Anyways this is a great example of color spaces and working with limited color volume 👍

    If it was me I'd take a photo of a group of 20 people and photoshop multiple iterations until eventually no one was left. Each night it would update and someone would vanish from the frame, like a Soviet-era purge.

    You should’ve photoshopped different details in a single picture and got it to changes a few small details every night and see how long it would take her to notice.
    Like a find the differences game.

    OMG, the prank/gaslighting possibilities for this are hilarious/terrifying. e.g. Replace family picture with photoshopped version with a specter in the background at Halloween. Switch to embarrassing child photo for your brother when his girlfriend's phone's bluetooth ID is detected.

    Nice one. I have been waiting patiently for full colour epaper to hit the market, for the explicit purpose of having a digital picture frame that isn't a bright lcd affaIr. looks like there are finally some reasonably sized 4096 color displays coming onto the market now. I'd've added a charging port for after the jig was up. Two years is great, of course, but if it's chargeable I'd see it easily getting more use. Then I'd also have used a wireless enabled chip (probably with a magnetic reed switch to turn the wireless on) so that I could secretly update the pictures when I visit.

    LOL that's barely a prank at all, just a surprising gift! I thought for sure at first that this is a prime scenario for photo-shopping a ghost into the background of a normal picture, and it only appears on some nights of the week. Otherwise it could look like just a static photo. or maybe the facial expressions get changed sometimes. Something subtle like that would be a really funny but long term prank.

    Imagine if the frame had a small solar panel tucked away on an edge or such, like the type on the old simple calculators, and could charge itself.
    Work to make it a bit thinner, add an SD card slot or USB-C port (which could do the once every two years charge if necessary) for the end user to access easily, and then sell it on Amazon.
    I'd totally buy one! The current type of digital frame with a cord doesn't work well for wall mounting, at least not cleanly, but this seems like a very viable solution.

    Two years later, this guy commented;
    If you chose had for example, a person, was in the scene. The person could move into a different position, outfit, you could even tell a story. Every day, the person could maybe have a change in clothing, but only one piece at a time, until several days later they have changed clothes. Then if the scene slowly changed into another scene. Maybe the person is at a museum looking at a painting, eventually it turns into that person at work, standing a few steps away maybe looking in a different direction, looking at the copies in their hands. Things would need to be stable in the scenes. Like the picture would probably not move or change size, but the scene inside of the frame could change. What if the painting that was inside the phone, was of them, looking at a painting of them in the museum, and it would change as the picture changed? I imagine that the copy machine could have been something that was barred off with one of those ropes that clip onto those poles, and eventually the piece in the museum would disappear little by little and a table top copier placed there and the front rope would disappear first and the side ropes eventually change into something, or maybe the ropes could be close enough to the table. One day the copier on the table would change into a large copier that has multiple trays and all that. Not to mention about the rest of the scene slowly transforming. If a second person would be added, how noticeable would it be, or what if there was someone else looking at a different painting, off in the distance, at the museum, and they slowly came closer over time. With only one small change happening at a time, would the additional complications from the second person make it more difficult to see the differences.
