What The Hell Happened To Splinter Cell

  • It kind of feels like Ubisoft is just making fun of us at this point, right? Sam Fisher is now in Ghost Recon, Elite Squad, Rainbow Six, and an upcoming VR game, but he still hasn't been in his own standalone Splinter Cell game since 2013. It's almost like Ubisoft knows that fans like the character but forget that they like him because they enjoy Splinter Cell.
In the video above, Jake Dekker expresses his exasperation at the lack of Splinter Cell games in recent years, especially in the face of Ubisoft continuing to support its other major tentpole franchises like Ghost Recon, Rainbow Six, Far Cry, The Division, and Assassin's Creed. From a financial standpoint, sure, it makes sense. Splinter Cell doesn't sell as well. That doesn't change the fact that Ubisoft has left Splinter Cell fans thirsty for a drop of content for nearly a decade.
Jake posits a few theories as to why Ubisoft hasn't returned to Splinter Cell for quite some time--namely that, until quite recently, all of Ubisoft games were being developed with an almost singular gameplay philosophy that goes against the Splinter Cell style. Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot has also said that Ubisoft felt a bit of fan pressure while constructing 2013's Splinter Cell: Blacklist, which may be another possible influence on the developer's decision to steer clear of the franchise ever since.
As of right now, Ubisoft plans to conclude 2020 with three open world action games releasing back to back. In October, you'll be able to take part in a hacker revolution in Watch Dogs Legion. Then in November, Assassin's Creed Valhalla transports the franchise to the time of Vikings. Finally, December's Immortals Fenyx Rising is a Greek mythology-inspired game that plays awfully similar to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. But no Splinter Cell. Not this year, anyway.

Thank you for stopping by! There's one thing I feel the need to mention here. I wrote this script before the Splinter Cell VR game got announced. I did add a few lines that address it, but I think my argument still stands. Even if the VR game is excellent, it certainly won't be what me and fans are looking for.
With that said, what do you hope to see in a new Splinter Cell?

A Chaos Theory like game mixed in with Blacklist and MGSV, maybe make it exclusive to PS5 so that you can have even more precision in your shots or be better at stealth (be able to sense when feet hit the ground).

If they really want some kind of progression system. They could drop Ssm in a open world with no gear and he'd have to adopt a "on site procurement" that thd mgs games used to have. How about also a tight linear story driven game that turns into a open world after the endgame events of said linear story. Now there's all these factions and shit that are created after Sam dealt with their leaders oe something..

Ubisoft said “make something different than what you’ve done before”. Yet every Ubisoft game is an open world RPG looter game. Don’t forget the towers to uncover the map. This is why we need a new splinter cell for some variety. I’d even like a new hawx game for something different from the usual

    • @ZX235w3

Notice how every Ubisoft game is an open world / RPG now? The problem isn't just the sales...it's the ability to recoup costs as AAA games become more and more costly to make. Ubisoft now hedges on safer bets like Far Cry and AC because these are games so wide in genre. Why play stealth in Splinter Cell when you can also play stealth in AC and Far Cry? Why make a solely stealth-focused game when it can only cater to a niche market that way?
You can see Hitman as another example of the stealth genre dying. They had Absolution which almost disregarded the stealth elements, and similiar we had Splinter Cell Conviction. And both of these games actually SOLD better compared to their sequels that tried to return back to the stealth roots (Blacklist, Hitman 2).
TDLR; as games get more costly to make, devs are less willing to make a game focused solely on a niche genre. That's also why you may notice most games all trying to be open world RPG levelling up ...whatever everything these days

Hanging of ledges and climbing pipes will be weird and disorienting in VR. Alyx did well because half life was already an FPS before VR. At the same time, it is 2020 and for publishers, Single Player games (that too something niche as stealth) with offline modes just don't help them meet their fiscal targets. Shareholders > gamers; Every publishers is forced to build either looter shooters or battle royals or games with core based on microtransactions.

Great video. Agree completely, and I think you nailed it-- Splinter Cell doesn't easily lend itself to the open world, overly-monetized, RPG grind-a-thons Ubisoft favors these days. Simply put, they don't know what do do with this franchise. It doesn't fit their preferred games model and they haven't figured out a way to modernize it as a profit center, so it languishes in a purgatory of sorts. Not dead, but not active either. Dormant. I used to think it would return eventually, but that hope grows dimmer with each passing month and year.
The VR game feels especially cruel given Ubisoft surely knows by now that's not what the fanbase really wants. Hint: not a VR game. And I hate seeing Sam Fisher crudely pasted into other Tom Clancy games in a rather transparent attempt to generate more interest in a flagging title (see Ghost Recon Breakpoint). Is that really all Splinter Cell is now? Some shiny DLC?
Honestly, at this point, as much as I miss this franchise and want it to return, if this is the way Ubisoft is going to treat such a cherished IP, I'd rather they just announce the franchise is dead and be done with it. That would at least allow us to no longer waste any more time waiting for a miracle.
    Cheers.

Ubisoft is stupid for not capitalizing on something that makes a lot of sense. Why not make the next entry be about Sam trying to stop the “dollar flu” from the division before it spreads. Clearly he fails but introduces the tech in the division to Sam disposal as well as being him into the universe as well since it’s more grounded. That would have put him on a global scale and allowed for multi player like previous interactions like blacklist and conviction. They could even use him in later interaction of the division with better purpose than an of the other cameo’s he has done, because at that point it’s all about fixing his failed mission for him.

I think the things which people would list as "negatives" about Splinter Cell today we're its biggest strengths back in the day, and still could be. They just have to be tackled right.
People don't want to customise Sam Fisher, they want to be as close to the original as possible.
If Ubisoft base their future direction for splinter cell purely on the games, then they're missing out on a whole other side of the coin.
If anybody has read the Splinter Cell novels, they will know exactly what I'm talking about. They obviously do a lot of character building and show the bigger picture when it comes to his personal life and missions.
An open world style gameplay based in several locations around the world could be perfectly workable. This would include elements of more traditional detective work and hiding in plain sight.
Specific missions and "side quests" (for lack of a better word) could be approached from the stealth angle.
The biggest fault with Blacklist was they made a complete U-turn in the way of character building by changing Sam's voice actor (obviously unavoidable at the time for Michael Ironside).
    Also, bring back Lambert.
If Fast and Furious can raise characters from the dead, so too can Splinter Cell.

This is a really great video but i think theres a lot more to why Splinter Cell won't be rebooted or continued. I loved SC and Id love to see another, but the truth is it wouldnt stand up to today's level of games. When you go back and play the original 3 SC they feel janky, the controls are awkward and the gameplay lacks the imagination we're used to in modern games, like in mgs5 where there's 100 ways to take out one enemy. And whilst the long time fans will say 'we want the new game exactly like the original', ubisoft cant rely on the original fans to make profits. The sad reality is that the era that played SC and liked that style of game isnt the majority or the main market right now. The last game came out 7 years ago. Im 23 and i love SC but barely any of my friends know what it is outside of seige and breakpoint. Ubisoft is, in reality, selling to younger generations that only know the 'big open world' game, the loot mechanics and the big multiplayer arena type games. Sadly there arent enough regular gamers from the time of SC to make a new game profitable. I reckon the VR game coming out is smarter move since VR games don't sell super well but they know that making a VR game that has an established fan base can do well, just like half life alyx. AAA developers otherwise don't want to make stealth driven linear games. The only exception i can think of it is The Last of Us, which is probably the only formula i could see working. That was a game that had linear levels but with mini open areas that allow a degree of freedom, and had an emphasis on stealth that was very simplistic in that you can either melee or headshot enemies. You could add in an upgrade system similar to metro exodus where theres upgrades you can find if you explore the map. I dont think hitman is a good comparison because the point of sam is that hes a ghost who hides in the shadows and is never seen So social stealth wouldn't really work in my opinion. TLDR im not holding my breath for a new SC game

There are possibly 2 options I think of if they want to continue the splinter cell game and add new stuff like skills trees.
Option A: they create a prequel game that would show how he became such a great operative in the game which would allow A skill tree being in the game since it would be his first couple missions as an operative.
Option B: Sam Fischer would be training a new operative to take over his role so that would mean you could customize the character to however you would like them to look this would also add a reason behind having a skill tree.

Michael Ironside was dealing with severe health issues during the production of blacklist. He was unable to do the Voice for it. • @1GWX
    @1GWX 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

I already said it. I might of even said it in a comment on one of Ubisoft's official youtubes. But ...I want them to make a Splintercell game. A game wherein Sam is now much older, retired and telling his story of all the missions in past games/timeline.
This would be a difficult thing I guess, for UBI to pick the BEST levels of ALL the prior Splintercell games, from Splintercell one to Splintercell Blacklist.
But that is what I want them to do. I think it would be the best thing to do right now for all us rabid Splinter cell fans.
Now even if they go with this idea of story that Sam is retired and all. This doesn't prevent them from going forward in time with new games in the series. You could have Sam retired and talking about previous levels/previous experiences/previous time in the Splintercell Universe, but you leave some out. So this does not remove or rule out the possibility of having MORE ADVENTURES in other sequels, telling more stories, in a future timeframe. ;)
If that is too complicated, (not to me it isn't) you could just have him not be retired. But instead, as before he is definitely much older now and for some reason he is stuck somewhere telling someone his stories of past missions. Then at the end you come back to present day, where he is telling the person these stories, that he is having a chat with for some reason. Then BAM, something emergent happens and he needs step into action. Then, the game ends there . Which perfectly sets up for the sequel!
This is my idea. I love this series. I played the first games -trilogy- on gamecube. I played Splintercell 3D ON 3DS(which is Chaos Theory in 3D). I loved the Gameboy Advance games.
Yeah, Sam Fisher is awesome! Michael Ironside (& i think most fans agree) was the best voice actor for the character, IMHO.
Oh before I go I must say. What's the situation Lambert?
Edit: I mentioned this before in another comment either at UBI official TH-cam or some other channel. But the title that came to me for such a game was: Splinter cell : Memoirs.... and now that I say that..."Splintercell: The Sam Fisher Memoirs" . ;)
    Peace.
    Om.

The thing is, devs are always trying to overcome the predecessors. In reality we only need a good story, a challenging gameplay, immersion, simple things. That's why SC 1-2-3 worked so well. They were sticking to the basics. Darkness, deception, being sneaky and smart. When you become unstoppable with slow-mo gunfights, the immersion is gone. Sam Fisher is not unstoppable, he's just man, who got the upper hand.

I feel like Breakpoint's immersive mode is a good starting point.. Open world is not so bad imo, and I think it was avoided in the first entries in the series just for technical limitations. But stealth ops are really all about preparation, planning, recon, choosing when and how to tackle objectives. Honestly I feel like Breakpoint is the best Splinter Cell since Chaos Theory.. However it's lacking a lot in stealth mechanics, platforming and interiors, other than of course urban environments!
And also I wouldn't feel betrayed if Sam finally left the stage to new agents, I quite like the character customization in Breakpoint. The next Splinter Cell game could be a great opportunity to tackle this theme, it could easily fit into the narrative - Sam Fisher who is too old to keep doing this and is conflicted cause he can't let it go, just as we are, but maybe he can find a new role in the agency, and be a reference for future agents? Who knows! It sounds engaging to me.

They could make a game focusing on ShadowNet, who disabled the Smallpox "bombs" in Pandora Tomorrow. You'd have an open world asset, you'd have other Spies besides Sam Fisher (ergo no need for Michael Ironside, and they aren't trying to replace him) and you'd get co-op/multi-player simply because you're a team of spies, not just a splinter agent. If you wanted to play offline, then it would feel more like a single player splinter cell (with emphasis on a MGS5 approach) Different levels/modes/tactics (new ways to get past obstacles in a stealthy manner) could be unlocked or purchased with microtransactions. This all sounds super good on paper right? Thoughts?

The thing I hated about Blacklist was that Sam's character felt dramatically different to what he really was. Conviction story-wise at least makes sense and had a pretty emotional one. Blacklist feels like a TV drama where a team is assembled to take down an evil terrorist. But why does Sam have to do that? Sam already expressed in Conviction that he didn't want to do anything resembling government work anymore. Conviction felt like a good send-off for Sam because he finally got his daughter back, and he was ready to move on with his life as a civilian. Sam felt betrayed and anger towards Lambert and 3rd Echelon. So why would he ever come back and form his own agency? Wouldn't Grim want to move on as well considering all of the trauma that transpired in Conviction and Double Agent. Also where is Redding? Last we see of him is in Double Agent. Vic's part seems kind of like a written excuse. What was his purpose really?
The writing after Double Agent seemed a bit out of touch with what the series was originally. I would've been happy if Sam's story ended after Conviction.
If they create a new Splinter Cell game, they should either make a fresh new agent and reference some of the older games(subtle not in your face ones), keep it linear but have it to where like Splinter Cell you could explore an area in multiple ways, and for the love of god emphasize that you need to play like a ghost. I might be controversial when I say this but I want the game to punish you for playing Assault. Make it much harder. In Chaos Theory, you could totally go in with grenades, a sniper rifle and shotgun attachment, but you best believe that the AI would be ruthless if they heard you. They would sometimes just spray bullets into the dark because they acted scared. And it worked, because that meant you had to rely on darkness and sound.
Also, they need to go back to making the levels ambitious. Can you remember a single level from Blacklist? I honestly only remember the desert map but nothing special about it.
But from Chaos Theory, I loved the Displace facility with the dissipating windows. I will always remember the torture scene in the beginning of the game. Pandora Tomorrow, the train mission stands out in my mind as one of the most unique missions I have ever played in a videogame.
All in all Blacklist took some baby steps in the right direction but for a new splinter Cell to be good, it needs to take some inspiration from it's past titles.

Why not have Sam retire from the field and act as the Lambert-style "man in the chair" to Briggs/Kestrel? So much could be done with that setup and it would take the pressure off of Michael Ironside having to give a physically strenuous performance... but it feels like no-one at Ubisoft cares...

Create shadows, or maybe with RTX based technology, Implement Lighting bounce system. The core stealth mechanics in splinter cell are hiding in the shadow after all. Why don't just play with those mechanics. The active skills shouldn't be the progression.

I do think that open world infiltration games have a lot of potential, but I don’t think Splinter Cell is the right series for it. What’s super cool with the SC series is the idea of a man drop alone in a very closed small area with objectives and gadget; in the end, the goal is to remain unseen. Larger scale would not allow super dynamic mouvements and hacking and all that good SC classic stuff in a good SC style. In fact, they should look up at the Hitman franchise and get inspire by what they do! I really think they succeed at modernizing the Hitman franchise!

Holy shit! YES! Make a Splinter Cell reboot that plays like MGSV!!
