If splinter cell ever comes back they need to reinvent the wheel that was Chaos Theory. That game was so ahead of its time, technically speaking, it felt like such a deep spy simulator

@Никита Исаев the level design was no where near as good as chaos theory it was far more linear and didn’t come close to the open mission design of chaos theory.

@Никита Исаев I played the Wii and Gamecube versions which I believe were the same as the PS2/Xbox versions, and besides some graphical issues and some bugs, it was almost as good as Chaos Theory. I never did find the original Xbox version, and can't find any gameplay of it anywhere, because whenever I try to search for it I get the 360 version instead. I heard it was easily the best version, and actually utilised no loading screens during levels much like the Xbox/PX versions of Chaos Theory, and had slightly different level maps than the PS2/GC/Wii versions. Is that true?

Same here. I miss this franchise so much. I am not a fan at all of huge open world games, especially competitive online shooters. I mean it's all just been done to death. I think they should come back with a solid linear S.C. game. Maybe they could mimic the style of say some of the Batman games where the main is obviously a linear story, with some optional side missions throughout.. But even if they just went linear, with a compelling story, and a good mix of stealth and decent gun-play, I think people crave these kinds of games.

  • @RedShadowOfSaturn
    @RedShadowOfSaturn 3 ปีที่แล้ว +41

Yeah, that's one theory, that we haven't gotten a new Splinter Cell due to it not translating well to an open world setting. Even the Sam Fisher missions in Wildlands felt a little shoehorned in. Also, it likely has to do with UbiSoft not knowing how to overmonetize a narrative focused, linear, mostly single-player game. It could definitely ship with multiplayer (coop, PvP or both), so...maybe that's how they do it. Even though I've been away from the franchise a long time, I'm with you on the fear that if Splinter Cell comes back, it might be ruined pretty badly.
Then again, much like how Star Wars: Squadrons and Jedi: Fallen Order were EA published games that proved, without a doubt, that non-live service games with no microtransactions can do pretty well in the market. If UbiSoft was design a new Splinter Cell, even if it didn't have multiplayer, and they just focused on curating the very best stealth action in the business...it'd be a similarly well-received move, I think. UbiSoft could use the better optics, for sure.

It's unfortunate how many producers of games (and franchises) often pursue what is trendy in the market in the hopes of rapidly expanding subscriptions at the expense of risking the franchise looking like every other game. If producers just take their time to develop the franchise by sticking to what fans loved the franchise for in the first place, that's how you build a franchise - it matures into a classic that lives on in the hearts of fans for a long time. At least in the movie world, just look at the Toy Story and Fast and Furious franchises to name a couple.
Perhaps it's a good thing that they haven't rushed to make another Splinter Cell for that reason. Although the manner in which they're starting to introduce Sam Fisher into its other games is disconcerting. Might be that the popularity of these sort of games is starting to lose steam and they need an old classic to prop them up momentarily. But then again, who knows

Splinter Cell open world can work if they make a mission HQ spot where you set up your mission and loadout, and then the game takes you to a pre-set starting point on the map for each mission. Either you would have to travel there or the game loads you to that spot but the mission wouldn't start until you are in the starting position. They could hide a small loading screen with a little cut-scene of Sam moving into position. Hell, maybe there's multiple starting positions to choose from to suit different play styles or different co-op dynamics.

It was my personal favorite in the series, and was the last game to follow the core stealth formula that made the series so great. I liked that it had the classic black stealth suit stuff mixed in with the plainclothes levels at the terrorist base. The stuff with the terrorists actually reminded me a little of the Hitman series since you're doing a mix of blending in and sneaking around. It really made you feel like a spy. My hypothesis is that DA failed mostly due to a lack of marketing, because it just seems like so few people have actually played it or were even aware of its existence at the time. But Ubisoft interpreted the poor sales as being the result of players not liking the game itself, so they changed up the formula with Conviction, which was the beginning of the end.

During my last days playing SvM I remember that playing as merc was almost impossible due to spies gunning down mercs left and right.
Some TH-camrs back then even made up strats and spy placement layouts that literally made it impossible for mercs to win.
Like, Imagine 3-4 mercs getting completely massacred before they're even able to set their foot inside the room were the terminal is hacked.
SvM was a rough experience at the end, at least for me.

Conviction is massively underrated. People don’t put in context the narrative arc and evolution of the Sam Fisher character. I think it was a great bookend. They should have followed on the story by not having Sam on the frontline anymore, it makes no sense that such an high-ranking officer is risking his life. Plus would have allowed to keep Ironside (given the “live acting” performance excuse given at the time - despite that could be circumnavigated easily).
I’m kinda expecting a reboot after all this time. They might take long cos they might be remastering the old games as well.
I think the game could work in open-world fashion, but not with the Ubisoft mandate of stuffing it to keep players engaged.

Totally agree with all you said. Splinter Cell is not meant to be open world just because situations and missions need to be scripted at least a bit to be challenging. A good path they could take, in my opinion, is the Hitman reboot way of making levels. I’d still prefer linear levels (all selectable from a specific menu, as it’s always been) but big open levels could fit the Splinter Cell narrative and be a good compromise between the old and new Ubisoft’s style of games.

SC has to stay the way it is...Blacklist had amazing mechanics. But it would be cool if the old voice returns and maybe if it is a little slower and more realistic to the climbing and crouching. The old games made me really focus, because of the realistic and slower movement to be stealthy.

    • @robrick9361
      @robrick9361 3 ปีที่แล้ว

How did Blacklist have amazing mechanics?
The stealth is so dumbed down it's condescending.
They replaced spectrums of noise and light with a meter which fills up to determine when enemies see you.
But if you pay attention the enemy literally doesn't notice anything while the meter is filling up until suddenly it's filled and now he's completely aware of Sam.
Almost like a lightswitch was turned on. Terrible stealth.
If the next Splinter Cell isn't like Chaos Theory, then who cares.

I think the things which people would list as "negatives" about Splinter Cell today we're its biggest strengths back in the day, and still could be. They just have to be tackled right.
People don't want to customise Sam Fisher, they want to be as close to the original as possible.
If Ubisoft base their future direction for splinter cell purely on the games, then they're missing out on a whole other side of the coin.
If anybody has read the Splinter Cell novels, they will know exactly what I'm talking about. They obviously do a lot of character building and show the bigger picture when it comes to his personal life and missions.
An open world style gameplay based in several locations around the world could be perfectly workable. This would include elements of more traditional detective work and hiding in plain sight.
Specific missions and "side quests" (for lack of a better word) could be approached from the stealth angle.
The biggest fault with Blacklist was they made a complete U-turn in the way of character building by changing Sam's voice actor (obviously unavoidable at the time for Michael Ironside).
    Also, bring back Lambert.
If Fast and Furious can raise characters from the dead, so too can Splinter Cell.

I... don’t know. You can certainly see in late Ubisoft titles that they weren’t too keen on making their games non open-world (a point you’ve mentioned). But I also think this is related to the death of Tom Clancy.
Blacklist was the last Ubisoft title bearing the title “Tom Clancy’s” that was made while Tom is still alive. Sadly, he died while Rainbow Six Patriots was under development. And what was Ubi’s response? They cancelled the final legacy of Tom Clancy, and went on to make Siege, the 5v5 Multiplayer Game with much less focus on storytelling (they even removed Terrorist Hunt, the closest resemblance to a Siege single player campaign in 2019). Not only that, they also made a lot of... questionable titles under the name of “Tom Clancy” (let’s not talk about Elite Squad).

I think the reason why you do not get more clicks is that your 5min video can be summarized in two sentences: The video game industry (incl. Ubisoft) strongly transists from a liniar game approach to an Open world setting, which is in absolute contrast to previous SC Games. It seems Ubisoft did not have a good idea how to combine the loved SC experience with this trend.

Across the board video games have dipped in quality and focus on reselling and reskinning old content.
