‘Does Russia belong in Europe?’ asks Singapore’s foreign minister

  • Singapore’s foreign minister, Vivian Balakrishnan, explains why Singapore condemned Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. And given history’s global conflicts in Europe, and now the war in Ukraine, Balakrishnan says that the strategic question now facing the continent is where Europe starts and ends.

      The fact is Singapore spoke the truth and not say no comment or take a side has many others wd which goes against the takes sides as the wind blows.
      Singapore has spoken against CCP china in the south China seas in following the UNCLOS irking CCP china a few times.
      Singapore has also stood for international rules based adherence which once again goes against what is being insinuated but rather shows its size did not matter and many country seek its way of attaining peace even during crisis around the world.
      Not sure why one cannot just admit that the FM of SG did speak well to purport the fact well and that is the crux the matter or forum (whichever it may be). We need to take wat is rightly said the substance shared barring political affiliation or orientation or its geographical size or strength.

      @deathsentence-bk9gn u got it wrong not work with the most beneficial but the most rightful one.
      Singapore is not a dog that chases bones.
      Singapores strength is its integrity and will to stand up for following the international accepted rules based norms.
      It is the major investor in major projects around the world - 85% in BRI projects and other countries development projects big and small. A known contributor in world social development, humanitarian, relief and social supporter not forgetting UN roles and participation.
      Now it has embarked on futuristic research in most sectors even biomedical, AI tech and Green projects.
      So Singapore is thinking, working and heading to face the tumulus world. So it doesn't need to kow tow to any abd do the wrongs just to be successful.
      How many times CCP China has threatened Singapore for speaking its mind and took a stand and supporting the internal rules based norms. It takes guts for a small country to tell off a big country even the US in the Michael case and death penalty condemnation for drug smugglers - this is Bcos if it's strength in knowledge based country.
      Working with partners doesn't mean u work for the wrong reason which many countries are doing now and get caught later.
      Cheers 🥂

Communists from Russia, China, Korea & Vietnam ... started Revolutions to seize control of their nations forcing the People to obey or die. The Soviet Unions used the defeat of Nazi Germany ... to seize control of the "liberated" Eastern nations and force the People to obey or die.
      If you are a Ukrainian ... you are one of those Russia loving traitors ... who in 1994 gave up all of Ukraines nukes, destroyed all their advanced weapons, agreed to never become a nuclear power ... and kept the Russian black Sea fleet in Ukraine meaning Ukraine will never be allowed to join Nato.

And from the recent Israel and Palestine conflict, even Israel with its top notch defense can't detect the invaders with one of the nest intelligence agency in the world amd its iron dome cannot counter all the missles. SG is way smaller than Israel, just a few missles into our land, and we have severe damage due to how densly populated we are. Rather dont antagonist our neighbours and font overestimate ourselves and underestimate anyone. Most of our paper generals and NSFs have never seen war or fought in war b4. No matter jow good a simulation is, it cant vompare to a real war where you know that your life and those you love are being threatened. And people usually breakdown during such moments. Given a choice, most would pack up and flee rather than fight.
      As the saying goes, hard times create strong men, strong men creates good times, and good times create weak men. And weak men creates hard times. The generation is too pampered and safe due to SG economic growth. And as someone from that generation, i can see it considering after serving NS, i can see so many people just want to rso rsi and excuse sunlight, excuse rmj excuse this, excuse that and considered the two years as a waste of time.. • @williamhuang2976
      @williamhuang2976 ปีที่แล้ว

      @ahxiong-qn5jr it's a no brainer! Russia historically hasn't been fully blended in the western civilization despite some genuine effort by Peter the great & Catherine the great. Before Bolsheviks revolution, Czar's Russia was basically a farmer dominant society, far from the western industrialized nations. And we all know the history since then. Today Putin has no interest to lead Russia to a democratic system politically and economically. The simple answer would be: Russia has never been a full member of Europe, under Putin, Russia walks further away including in ideology. I was shocked to watch that stupid question coming from the mouth of a foreign minister.
      I'd give you an opposite example: Japan. After Meiji Restoration, from noble class to bureaucrats, the whole nation went through a complex and fundamental change to westernize which separated Japan from the rest of Asian countries, especially China. Today, Japan is a core member of G7, the 3rd largest economy, a westernized power with beautiful Asian palette.
      Simply put, Japan geologically never moved, but has been an important part of western power. Russia hasn't moved either, but it has slipped further away from the West.

    • @williamhuang2976
      @williamhuang2976 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @ahxiong-qn5jr if LKY were alive today, he would never ask that stupid question but seize the opportunity as to maximize the benefits for Singapore by riding the wave of global structural transformation. This is what a shrewd state man & politician should do.

    • @williamhuang2976
      @williamhuang2976 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @ahxiong-qn5jr frankly I don't know what you are talking about.
      It's irrelevant when or in what situation that guy asked the question. Because the answer can't be more clear: Russia has never been a full member of Europe, under Putin, it slipped further away.
      2nd, LKY, the shrewd state man and the founding father of Singapore, had created the perfect strategy for the country in the geopolitical game (both regional & international) . The future generations of leaders just follow it.
      3rd, LKY's game plan may be fine-tuned to a certain extent because the world has been changing rapidly, especially after Putin's invasion.
      I can lay out some history for you to think about:
      Singapore has been a huge beneficiary after Chinese HK policy change. Chinese economy will slide to an abyss, the risk of military confrontation between China & Taiwan increases. What is the best strategy for Singapore to deal between China & Taiwan?
      Russia will lose its aggression in Ukraine, in the process, the western power led by America is organizing several regional alliances around the world to counter the threat from China & Russia. The new alliance will yield a tremendous & long term impact in world order, economy, military & diplomacy. What should Singapore position itself in this ever more intensified shift?
      Whatever your answers may be, it'd be far better than that stupid question.

So who are you going to represent asked Tengku to LKY. He replied he wants to represent the Malaysian so that means he wants to run the country. "For us, when a big neighbour cites historical errors and crazy decisions as a pretext to launch an invasion, redraw boundaries, all alarm bells go off."
    I didn't hear any alarm bells from Singapore when China cited the 9-Dash Line since 1990s and recently updated it to 10-dash line. What was Singapore government doing? Too busy counting Chinese Yuen???

      What invasion did they launch? What boundary did they redraw? The 9-dash line is not a boundary.

      @@ChristineMechtler - The similarities between Muslims and Chinese (including their lackeys like you) is that they are chronic gamblers AND pathological LIARS.
      The problem here is - they think the rest of the World are as just as ignorant as they are.

      the 10-dash line is from Taiwan though... they have claims which is far larger than what China claims.

    For all those who don't know, in Singapore you can't run for public office if you dont have a college degree. Lee Kwan yeu has always taken the best and the brightest under his party's wings and that's why Singapore is where it is now
