    Absolute legend for this comparison. I have only just got a silicon mac and this is so encouraging to know that Rosetta is so efficient.. Nice one bro

      thank you! yeah, it definitely gets the job done. The Ableton team has a lot more optimizing to do though. Hopefully we'll see it up to Logic's level of optimization soon!

    I was looking at someone’s video with the new 14” m1 pro chip using ableton and playing the included demo song the cpu meter was still floating around 35% the same as my 13” m1. Made me glad I stopped waiting for the new laptops coming out and just bought my one a few months ago.

      that's good to know that the normal M1 is holding up vs the Pro! and tbh it's still the best value

    are you using vsts that are not yet optimized for silicon? silicon support works really well over here when only using AU and ableton native plugins. it’s super snappy.

    • @freshlysunlit
      @freshlysunlit  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I was using one plugin that is optimized, but I don't think I've installed the latest version that added optimization-I always forget about updating plugins 😅 the rest were Ableton's internal plugins. It's definitely snappy and runs amazing! Just a little higher CPU usage than I was expecting. But maybes that's ok, maybe it's just utilizing more of CPU ya know?

    • @freshlysunlit
      @freshlysunlit  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Music Media Production I don't have Fabfilter (although I'd like to haha), but on their website they say they are all updated to be M1 compatible!

    • @freshlysunlit
      @freshlysunlit  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Music Media Production yeah, I really wanted to push it and see what it could handle! Running a baseline Mac Mini M1 with 8GB ram.

    I'd die for an intel mac comparison. Native m1 vs Intel Live 11 - I was about to move on soon and buy new gear but I'm hesitating if music production world is there yet... I was wondering if maybe it still would be better to buy top end intel mac instead of m1(x)

    • @freshlysunlit
      @freshlysunlit  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you run a lot of 3rd party plugins I'd maybe consider going intel. Although the rosetta version of Live 11 works great on the M1, so you can just run that while the plugin companies catch up. tbh the M1 Macs are the first time Apple has made computers that are actually a good deal for the price. $699 M1 Mac minis are beating top of the line $10,000 Mac Pro towers in benchmarks. Until intel and other microprocessors companies embrace ARM M1 will be king.

  • @TheOfficalAndI
    @TheOfficalAndI 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Can you run x86 vsts in a rosetta layer while ableton runs natively?
    I'd like to see a quantifiable comparison, like how many operators can you use that play a constant legato note, just playing a sinewave.
    Just to give one example. It'd be interesting to see if the M1 version can handle more before crashing or audio dropouts.

    • @freshlysunlit
      @freshlysunlit  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It looks like the only VST plugins that have been updated to be compatible show up. All x86 AU plugins work, but it opens a process called "AUHostingCompatiblityService" that drains the CPU.
      I like your idea of doing a quantifiable comparison with operator-I feel like a test like that would be very educational. Gonna incorporate that into on a new video for the 11.1b4 beta update they released today!

    • @TheOfficalAndI
      @TheOfficalAndI 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@freshlysunlit Thanks for the info!
      I am guessing that the AU compatibility process has a bigger performance overhead compared to just having everything running in rosetta.
      That would be a pretty interesting comparison too, since a smaller amount of plugins have an au version.
      I use a bunch of older stuff, like camelcrusher, so that would be really nice to know :)
      Neat, testing until it breaks would really show the limits of both architectures on m1. I was positively surprised that you mentioned your buffer size in the video. Since that (and soundcards) have an effect on performance too.

  • @iushhmusic

    If I have a copy of ableton live 10, will that also get a m1 support?

    • @freshlysunlit
      @freshlysunlit  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It will run on M1 through Rosetta, but not natively.

  • @Busiless
    @Busiless 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Hi. Great vid. I've just installed the b5 version and most of my VST's have disappeared. I see them in audio units but I haven't been using it for my previous projects. Any ideas what could be the reason and is there anything I can do to see all VST's? Thanks!

    • @freshlysunlit
      @freshlysunlit  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey thanks for watching mate! As of right now with the 11.1 beta only VSTs that have been updated by their developers to be Apple silicon compatible show up. However, you should be able to run all plugins through Audio Units (AU).

  • @fyrstgomez

    1:45 CPU at 111 %... what the heck does that even mean?:P

    • @freshlysunlit
      @freshlysunlit  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's because the M1 has 8 cores, so each core is 100%, equalling 800% total. Doesn't really make sense seeing how "percent" means out of one hundred lol

    • @fyrstgomez
      @fyrstgomez 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@freshlysunlit Haha, riiiight:D
      But, actually, with that information I find the numbers even more confusing.
      I know that the CPU meter til Ableton isn't the same as the system monitor but I can't help but wonder that the 75% later in the video only translates to about 220 % - i.e. when you doubled all the tracks and effects.
      Even so it seems like the M1 is truly a performance monster and I'm very curious to see how the new M1X / M2 / Mwhatever will perform with the M1 support (that is if Apple ever decides to publish and release the new chip rofl)

    • @freshlysunlit
      @freshlysunlit  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@fyrstgomez True, the number are confusing XD especially comparing the Ableton CPU meter and Activity Monitor.
      My guess is that Apple will keep M1 around for a while. They'll probably release the M1X/M2 for the Mac Pros and iMac Pros but keep the M1 for everything else. Seeing how long they took to develop it plus the hiccups the entire chip industry has been having it might be longer between new chip releases.

  • @barrycole5930

    Interesting, have a project that runs fine on my pc but has cpu crashes on my m1, glitches out half way through as the effects kick in, might have to try this beta see what happens because at the moment m1 is a disappointment with m1 and i bought it specifically to resolve pc audio glitches.

    • @freshlysunlit
      @freshlysunlit  3 ปีที่แล้ว

    • @freshlysunlit
      @freshlysunlit  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Baseline Mac Mini 8GB! It's possible the Air doesn't perform as well because it's passively cooled (there's no fans) so the processor can limit itself.

      @@freshlysunlit you're welcome! Also, since you said you had a non-M1 plugin in your session, Live "m1" was most certainly switched to Rosetta, hence the identical results. A nice test would be to load the built-in demo set (found in the Help menu's "Lessons") and duplicate tracks until Live can't handle it, and do this with both versions indeed.

    • @freshlysunlit
      @freshlysunlit  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@valiumdupeuple I wanted to use the demo session for the test but it didn’t work in the 1.1 beta :(
      I downloaded an installer that is specifically for M1 and ARM, so there’s not even an x86 option, so it can’t use Rosetta. Nonetheless, using non M1 plugins probably does affect the performance. I’ll have to try it without the non M1 plugins and see the results!

    Late to the game compared to what? Cubase doesn't have it, Pro Tools doesn't have it, Studio One and Reason literally just came out with this, so it's just Logic which had a headstart as it's Apple-made, FL, and BitWig (which is a new easier to port codebase compared to the others). Heck, most plugin makers, like Native Instruments, Arturia, and many others still don't have Apple Silicon native plugins out...

    • @freshlysunlit
      @freshlysunlit  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I guess I was kinda comparing it to apps in general, like Adobe, DaVinci Resolve, Cinema 4d, Rekordbox, Blender, etc. But Reaper and FL are also compatible now. You're right though, they aren't super late, especially considering how slow the plugin makers have been.
