Did We Make A Terrible Mistake..?! Buying a Boat on the Isle of Skye, Scottish Highlands - Ep28

- Willie, Sarah and their dog, Jack Spaniels, continue their biggest adventure yet - leaving their suburban life and moving over the sea to 'Live The Skye Life'!
In this episode, the Skyelifers cope with a major boat disaster - not even a week after buying it, the engine completely fails and we need to embark on a rescue mission to get the boat out of the water!!
We were seriously on the verge of giving the whole thing up - could we find someone to fix the engine, or would it turn out too expensive for us?
Thankfully, we did some foraging and had the fire pit with a couple of drams of whisky to calm our nerves, while this was all going on.
Thanks & see you in the next video!

I was repairing and rebuilding engines from age 19 and I still find it strange that not everyone gets a thrill out of doing this. My suggestion is that you take a little time out to watch YT videos of engine maintenance so that you can do it yourself in an emergency. Then make sure that you have the necessary tools and spare parts. But the main thing is to learn what maintenance work must be done and how often. Thanks for another entertaining video, lad & lassie (or hinnie).
Love your sense of humour Sarah, pity grumpy Willie didn't appreciate it though 😂. Richard really is a fantastic friend, well done and look forward to adventures on the lakes. 😊❤
My father owned and built various sail boats and yachts over the last 50 years and always described owning a boat as being like standing in a shower whilst tearing up £10 notes.
As a boat owner, all I can say is that boats need constant maintenance. Engine needs regular services and thoroughly checking before and after each use. Welcome to money pit ownership 😊
So pleased you got the engine sorted.
Love our boat, but as hubby always says, "the best boat is somebody else's "!
Money pit 😢
You really do live in a beautiful place…
@@karitrailbutz9273 my best advice to people who think they want a boat is to make friends with someone who already has one - at minimum you’ll learn a lot including whether you actually want a boat or want the idea of a boat!
I’ve been around boats all my life, mostly sailing and I can confirm that the second happiest day of your life is buying a boat. The happiest being when you come to sell it!
as a former small boat owner myself i know your pain.
I think one piece of valuable safety advice i would give you would be to buy a small 3-4hp auxiliary engine for when there's a problem with the main engine - they're also far more economical to run but obviously much slower - you wont get onto the plane for sure !
.. and a spare spark plug or two...
I completely agree with this. Accidents happen, for example if the prop hits a rock you can sheer the pin and you're left with a working engine that has no drive. Get a couple of oars too.
When I went to Scotland for my holidays on the West Coast of Argyle. I was amazed at how many boats in the harbours had two or even three engines. When I look at films or documentaries of WWII MTB boats or RAF launches in the engine room is two diesel engines kicking out tons of Horse Power to get the boats home! 🚢
A boat is a hole in the water in which you pour money 😂.
Sarah eats a Crunchie, Willie flaps and Jack Spaniels collects lots of kindling for the fire…..that’s the Skye Life, love it 💜💜💜
mmmhmmm a Crunchie nom nom
@@fredlasiter4456Do you want just any old pirate or does it have to be Depp?
Richard really is a jack of all trades, although after watching him doing your shed roof I should say he's a master. I'm glad your engine is fixed and look forward to some boat related content.
Normal for island life!!!
The opening calm before the storm is such a beautiful sight. A common comment I hear from boat owners is the two best days of your life are the day you buy your first boat, and the day you sell it.
I felt exactly like that when I brought a 40 foot narrowboat - the bits in between were pure hell!
Every boat owner I know feels your pain. When you can't afford a new boat, all manner of exciting little mishaps are common. I've been there! It's all a part of the "joy" of boat ownership.
Hi guys, its definitely worth picking up a wee vintage Seagull outboard as an auxiliary, you can get perfectly good working ones for around £100 or so,a wee bit noisy and a wee bit smokey, and you'll not be breaking any speed records, but it will get you out there and back again if the main outboard ever acts up on you.
Yay for fixed boats, wild raspberries, good friends, beautiful skies on Skye, fire pits, and pups!!!
First time I seen Willie stressed, and a little short with Sarah 😮 but got there in the end lol😊
I liked seeing that because it is keeping it real! Human emotions come and go in waves! ❤
Great video as always, loved watching the robin parent and baby. Jack was living his best life as usual.
It's lovely that your vocabulary is getting Scotified while up here , it's so nice to hear...
Dog poo bags would off worked for collecting your berries. With Jack, you always have them 👍😁
That’s where they ended up when I went to get a coffee!
@livingtheskyelife good old poo bags... well, not old ones, of course 🤪
Spare engine for the emergency bracket. Follow Dangar Stu. Service the engjne, the carb the lower unit and all the rigging. It’s all doable and no need for professionals which is expensive normally.
Service is Job#1
Spare motor is job #2
For reversing, put your hand on the *bottom* of the steering wheel, then just move your hand in the direction you want the trailer to go. You can practice without the boat on your lane. Then you’ll be pros in no time.
The person you bought the boat from may still have the manual that came with the engine when it was new, it would be worth asking. Preventative maintenance is much better than hoping for the best. I expect that an online search will help you find the maint. procedures you need. The more you get to know your engine by looking after it and making adjustments when required the less you will have to worry about.
@@davidwelch6796 100% this! They really are pretty simple and it does sound like the rigging needs refreshing.
Boats - grrrrrrrr don’t ask. But hey if you can handle the constant repairs it is a whole heap of fun. The cottage looks absolutely lovely.
Oh Willie! Didn’t have you down as a panicker!🤣 Be positive man! And don’t give up on the boat what ever happens over the next few weeks! You’ll. be like an old pro soon enough!😂😂😂😂 Loved the video. Richard is truly a legend xxx
Very glad the engine was fixed and the smile was back on Willie's face..Once again the Skye legend Richard came to the rescue..Best wishes
Whaaaaat would we do without Richard?!
We don’t want to think about that..!!
Sarah-you're so calm and lovely- we appreciate your dodgy puns even if Willie doesn't :) xx
He was laughing too - I was intentionally winding him up though 🫢
Around 6pm Sunday we suddenly remember we have a Skye Life video to watch and that makes our evening even better. Thank you! Willie- could you perhaps do a video about your music making? Interested to see what that involves.
Great video as usual. Next time you fit and riveted items to your boat (or car) consider putting some sealant under the fitting before riveting. For a car this prevents rust, on your boat it should seal it better.
Look forward to your adventures each week🤙🏻
Was that robin Dave from your old channel, Willie? Maybe he misses you and came to visit!🤣
And it’s great you have found such a wonderful friend in Richard!
Aww maybe! Dave felt left out with the new channel 😅
Richard is worth his weight in gold! Please take care on the water people I am enjoying these videos so much and don’t want anything to happen to you and Jack Spaniels! Loved the robins Sarah!
Richard just hangs back and watches Willie's antics. It is a great partnership.
he’s learning the way i was taught 😂told what to do and get on with and if he doesn’t get it right just do it again 🤣🤣🤣🤙🤙🤙
It’s sure great to have a “Richard” in your life!
Sure is - though I keep thinking he's Dave off The Hairy Bikers lol
King Richard of Skye .... glad boat sorted.
My ancestors are from Skye. I myself am a Maritimer from Prince Edward Island. Watching the water go in and out along with the grasses and kelp brings back such an olfactory memory. I can still smell home. FYI, Crunchie is my favorite candy bar from home. That honeycomb toffee wrapped in delicious chocolate. Yum! Tell Richard we call him a blister in my area, "shows up after the work is done.".
It's a good idea to pop your picked raspberries into the freezer, flat on a tray, for three minutes. You'll find a few worms crawl out, better than being the unplanned meat course...
Hi guys, once again another great episode, as smooth as marshmallow, 😁. I used to live in whitby and helped my friend fix his cruiser £££££... Glad you got yours working again, wee pups is looking well as do you both, stunning scenery as usual, and a wee dram, lovely. Richard as usual great help👍👍.. Rope rescue great job Willie, can't wait to see some lobsters!!!... Till next time.
Cheers, Rob fea Dunfermline!!
You definitely live in heaven, it’s so breathtaking beautiful, hope the boat works now…. 🙂
Excellent job cleaning your bit of Skye foreshore of abandoned rope, Willie.
Too bad about the difficulties with the boat. So happy that you and Sarah were able to get the boat fixed. Thank goodness for Richard’s help, as well as, the boat man’s.
Glad you got some fire pit time. Cheers to all. Have a good week.
So glad you got your boat sorted. Thanks to Richard and Wayne. So glad you got some fishing done. Great video
I found the pun hilarious. Love watching you both. It is so lovely there.
Richard is a legend: what a renaissance man!! And Willie: awesome beard action @ 12:40
He’s been working on it!
You Two + Jack Spaniels are excellent, a total tonic for a Sunday! Felt so worried for W about the boat. He looked so upset. Hope it's all ok now. Thanks for another video :)
Jack Spaniels is the best little helper I’ve seen in a long time! What a good🐾boy🐾!❤TN Nana
I was so frightened you were going to conk out on the water Willie. I am so pleased you got the boat back on the trailer and had it fixed. Can't wait to see a video of you fishing from it and see what you catch. Thanks for another lovely Sunday evening of your adventures as I so look forward to them. Love to you all including Richard cos we can't leave him out can we?❤
Cheers from your newest subscriber from California 😊
The only experiences I have had with boats were in Alaska. We had a 21 foot aluminum river boat that "flew" swiftly along the rivers to our favorite fishing spots. It was interesting to learn to "read" the river (which shifted all the time) so as to stay in the channels and avoid the gravel bars. We took it out into deeper waters, as well. I am so glad that Wayne was able to help you with your engine woes. Richard, too! He can now firmly add shoreline boat towing to his long list of skills. He is a GOOD friend! Much good luck in your boating adventures, Willie and Sarah... That glass of whisky by the fire looked very relaxing. May you continue to share such evenings always! Hugs to Jack!
You scored aces wh when you got Richard as a neighbor! They make it a better place to live. He reminds me of my uncle's jack of all trades!
So relieved that the engine could be repaired. How satisfying to get the boat cover done. Look forward to seeing you out on the water soon.
The segment around the fire was wonderfully relaxing. Sorry about the boat!
2 good days with boats - the day you buy 'em and the day you sell 'em 🤣 Good luck
Position the trailer on the slipway by hand then reverse the car back to it and hitch it up.
They say that the happiest days with a boat, are the day you bought it, and they day you sell it. We have lived the boat drama....it is heartbreaking. When you get one that runs, it is so much fun! We have had the same boat for 6 years now. Good luck!
Hi Willie and Sarah. That looked stressful. Glad Richard was able to help you out. Take care. Nick
great relief the boat engine is fixed! looking forward to the fishing expedition video (assuming there will be one!). the birds in the beginning stole this show, though--quite fearless in the search for treats! cheers!
Thank you for a another great vlog. Delighted the boat problems weren’t to complicated or expensive. Richard is a treasure of a friend. 😃
Whew! Thank you Wayne and Richard, you are both amazing men!!!
Yet another thoroughly engaging peep into your idyllic life. The addition of having a boat will undoubtedly bring you countless days ahead of extra fun and memories. Enjoying a few wee drams at dusk whilst gazing into the flames of the fire pit is priceless too. I wish you continued good fortune. 🤘
Great work Wayne and, as always, Richard. So pleased you have a working engine and a great new cover to keep unwanted items out!
Argh! What a palaver with the boat.
It's so fab how the community mucks in to help out. Well done Richard and Wayne!
B.O.A.T. Bring out another thousand.
xx
It's always nice to have good friends that can help out in times of need. And in turn, i'm sure that you will be able to help them out when in need. Always, Thanks for your content it's always nice to see people's different ways of life. You live in such a beautiful part of the country, I'm sure a lot of us could say, We envy you. Thanks for taking the time to bring us along.
Well done Wayne and Richard! BTW Willie, any sign of the finished "These Old Walls"?
Love it both of you and Richard and the man that mended your boat xx
Excellent news on the boat. Well done Wayne and top man, Richard. The fire pit looked great. Sitting outside in the summer months is food for the soul 🥰
Ah, boat life. It's a lot like the weather in places like Skye and Alaska (my home). You really have to remember how good the good days are for it to make sense on the bad days. Dinna fash Willie, you'll be a right outboard motor diy-er in no time, and you guys will be having glorious days on the water before summer is done 🩷
More challenging to deal with boat but you’ve got Guru Richard to help and fingers crossed for not getting too much issues ! Lovely blue sky with spectacular view indeed.
Awww! Poor Captain Willie 🤣I've a feeling all will be well! just don't go out too far til your're sure! it was probably not used for a while and really needed a good run & service, fear not! and Richard to the rescue again! man that guy is a complete legend! your new world is teaching you about true friends and patience! those wee birds were so cute Sarah & so close! & great weather, it's been bucketing down here (Stirling😆) since forever! Good Luck this week! 😉
Great morning there. That robin was cute. Nice wild raspberries. Not good to hear the boat giving problems. 😞 But glad it is fixed now and all is good. Lovely day out there in Skye.
Loved the fire pit! Sorry for the boat troubles, you guys have a great friend in Richard!
Just seen this. Sorry to hear about your boat woes! Knowing your tenacity, you two will prevail. Glad you had some good times by the fire pit x
My first thought was get Richard! He is a very good friend.😊
Again Richard is a G-D send.
Very good news Wayne to the boat help.
Richard to the rescue! Kudos to Wayne as well. Thank you. I look forward to more boating videos in the future!
Great episode. All the elements: drama, comedy, an adorable dog, wildlife and berries, plus the timely intervention of a good friend.
Hate to state the obvious- if it hasn’t been stated before……you should always have an auxiliary engine!
If that is the only repair you will be very lucky. Beautiful scenery
Oh I forgot to say how much I love you including your Bloopers! Thank you!
Aww thanks haha! We love doing them too 😅
So stressful! But I loved Sarah's pun, even if you were too bothered to appreciate it! 😂 Hope you enjoyed the fish. Thanks for the video...I wait with huge anticipation every week. You never disappoint. Keep enjoying the Skye life! ❤
I felt sorry for Sarah, she was just trying to lighten the mood. Loved her joke, at least we thought it was funny 😂
Ah he was also laughing about it, but he knew I was intentionally winding him up, which was a bit naughty 🫢😜
😅😅😅 Love your storytelling Willie.
Boats sound so romantic but the reality is a whole other thing!Have fun with your boat!
sarah when picking soft berries use a bottle with water in stops bruising and the bugs float off.! the 3ltr with handle work best
The joys of owning a boat 😂😂 I remember those days
When backing up the boat trailer, put your hand(s) on the bottom of the steering wheel. You will find it much easier. Cheers!
Those views you have from your cottage are stunning, it must be magical living there
Richard to the rescue!
The calm before the storm. Part of what we love about your channel is you share the best bits (and, really, mostly it is "best") but the not-so-best, too. Sorry, Willie, about the boat issues. Nothing more disappointing than a dream achieved, and then (even temporarily) dashed. At least the engine was fixable and it's full steam ahead. Bring on the fishing and lobster pots. Oh, and totally impressed by the unravelling the ropes. I struggle to untangle a string of Christmas lights! LOL
Richard is a legend 😊
eeeek I am so happy it all got fixed I could feel the angst for sure .. that view from the firepit what a dream :)
I just love your positivity, even when things are not going according to plan! The robin and baby were beautiful !!❤️
Hello from Montana, USA! You all are so fun to watch! Don't worry about the motor! From here on out very regular maintenance will eliminate much of you engine troubles! I wish I could join you fishing in you magnificent Yacht!
I’m sorry you guys have had such a difficult time with your new boat! I know how you must’ve been looking forward to just going out and doing some recreational relaxation. Thank you Wayne and Richard! I’m looking forward to more boating escapades. ❤😊
Well done everyone who helped you,now you can go out on the water and get back safe x
Enjoying Sarah taking the subtle mickey out of the new male toy )))))))))))
Dude, you guys scored with Richard being your neighbor. That guy's awesome. Hope your SeaHog is good to go. Also the fire pit/whisky scenario looked brilliant. Cheers!
Wayne, well done lad, thank you !
Aww so sorry for the stress with the boat glad it’s sorted now what a friend you have in Richard always ready to help out that’s worth a king’s ransom how cute to see the robin feeding it’s baby and how good of Jackto gather kindlings all tc till next time the oldies 🤗🤗🤗
Thank God for good friends 🙏 Always beautiful on Skye. Great shots of your lovely fire pit. Jack, always ready to inspect everything that is being done. 🌻🐕🥰🇺🇸
I am so happy that the boat was saved for you, Willie! That was a nice video. Sarah, I absolutely adore the little robins.
Glad boat all sorted was getting worried for you guys love watching you journey. Richard is a good friend to have around ❤❤😊
Hello willie and Sarah, I think willie was brave to help you with your hair coloring. He did a great job, I think the color of orange is the artist in you Sarah. I think the color of orange kind of grows on me, as I watch more of your videos. I wonder what the hair color of golden brown color would look like with your dark color hair? But I'm sure you've tried all different kinds of hair colors. And they are all unique in choice. Glad Willie was able to get the boat repaired without having to replace the engine. Thanks for sharing this video.
Poor Willie! I really felt your anxiety. But your move to Skye is all about the adventure, and the boat has become part of that. If over time it gets too costly (mainly through maintenance problems) it may be time to part company with it, but enjoy it as much as you can while you have it!
Sarah: I wasn't sure I would like the hair colors.... but honestly I LOVE it! Almost as much as Willie's courage to apply it 🙂
Thank you for sharing your adventures.
So pleased to meet you and Willy and Jack spaniel. I think you’re my kind of people. ❤
Wow...what a nail biter glad you got the boat fixed! Hi to Richard. Have a good week.
Always remember to put the plug in the boat! That's my advice from experience! 😉
Dont let small things like this affect you, kids. This is absolutely and perfectly normal everyday life. Be ready for anything and youll do well‼
