Thank you for a well produced and informative video. After this experience do you think you would ever exchange the dream of living in a house for the freedom of boat life?
Really clean and nice looking boat. Ruth said it built recently, but was that when it was retrofit? I saw the bow thruster on the panel That would certainly help with docking and pushing off if there is not a lot of room along the canal wall.
Hi Ruth! As I live on a narrowboat I’d like to clarify a few points from your excellent vlog: Narrowboats are 6 feet 10 inches wide, any canal boat wider than this is a widebeam (which you stayed on). They sail under their own propulsion (a Diesel engine or more recently an electric motor). A houseboat is static and has no propulsion. The bow-thruster you mentioned is an electric powered propeller in the bow of the boat to help with steering (nice to have as canal boats have a mind of their own in strong winds!) On the English waterways widebeams are restricted predominantly to the Grand Union and the Kennet & Avon canals where the waterways are wide enough to allow widebeam boats to pass each other and for one to fit in the locks (or two narrowboats side by side). They are not cold in winter as someone mentioned. Just like a normal house, they’re cold if you don’t heat it but if you do they’re toasty warm. Grey water is indeed pumped into the canal but there’s a lot worse in our waterways courtesy of the water companies…. Black water (toilet) either goes into a holding tank and is pumped out periodically or you have a chemical toilet which you empty at an ‘elsan’ point every few days. Anyone who would like to know more about the canal boats and network in the UK, there are many TH-cam channels but I’d recommend ‘Cruising the Cut’. Hope that helps clears up a few things.
@@peterjonesz Won't be the last. Seems I've run across at least a thousand narrow boat owners the last couple years over here in the States. Must be millions in Britain.

Bourbon (we pronounce it like burr-bin), is a whiskey made from corn and aged a minimum of 2 yrs, unlike its cousin scotch made from barley and aged a minimum of 3 years Something interesting we learned during our speyside distillery tours is that a lot of scotch distilleries us Ex-bourbon barrels (which are whisky casks which have been previously used to mature American Bourbon.)
Just a quick clarification on bourbon. It has to be at least 51% corn, but doesn't have to be corn exclusively. Most bourbons have a secondary component of rye or wheat, and typically a small percentage of barley as well. Some bourbons include all four grains. It actually doesn't have to be aged for two years unless it's to be called "straight" bourbon. It can only be made in the USA, and it must be aged in new charred American oak barrels. As someone pointed out, most of those barrels get a second life in Scotland and elsewhere. Many of my favorite scotches are matured in ex-bourbon barrels. All that said, I love the canal boat and could see myself living in one.
This video was about canal boat life, which I was interested in. It's amazing that you can rent a place to stay. The beautiful scenery and Ruth's lifestyle were a perfect match. Hi Ruth, your accent is nice to hear. It's different from UK and American English. In fact, nobody understands Scottish English, but we understand your accented English. 😁 A like 👍✨ 🇧🇷
Well Ruth that’s a change from a campervan!! We have been on a holiday in England travelling to Wales and back, it was a narrow boat. Yours is so spacious by comparison, very nicely fitted out, all the mod cons!! I notice the previous comment from a narrow boat dweller tells you all the interesting things about different kinds of craft, so I won’t duplicate. Well done with the video all good content as always. Cheers Mike🍷🍷👍
My oldest sister lived on a houseboat for a while, but they encountered maintenance issues you don't have with regular housing. Then they travelled in their RV to sell Native American jewelery at powwows. They're living conventionally now. I guess you couldn't get to the highlands in a canal boat? I think you have floor space in your living area for a full set to dance with. The challenge is to keep your formations tight or you rock the boat! :)
I spent a wonderful Aug & Sept of 2000 at the National Piping Centre just across the motorway at the top of Hope St. Speirs Wharf at that time was derelict, disreputable, and more than a bit creepy. Even so, I had a lovely afternoon walk along the towpath as far as the Partick Thistle stadium, then down through the University and back via the subway. Not only was the Glaswegian accent unpenetratable to my American ears, but I found quite a number of folk speaking Scots, which for me was even worse! It's so nice to see how the area has been cleaned up and rejunvenated. Since then I see they've also completely rebuilt the Stockingfield Junction, where the Monkland Canal - of which Speirs Wharf is the current terminus - meets the Forth & Clyde, with new foot bridges in all directions. Thanks for the beautiful and informative video. I love your cozy canal boat.
Thanks for watching Eric, it sounds like you had a lovely trip to Glasgow back in 2000. There are some areas of Glasgow which do still feel a bit run down, but it's nice to see how nice Speirs Wharf is now.
Use another pot for a lid if it is similar diameter, or bunch everything into a smaller pile in frying pan and cover. Also, when showering in mobile home or canal boat, have a military shower, wet yourself and cloth or sponge, water off, soap up and scrub, rinse off. A major difference in water usage! You probably already do, as you seem the type of adventurous person who would already know this. Many thanks for the review, never thought it would be so confortable inside a canal boat. Was goping to buy one here in London years ago, I am re-thinking now. Cheers!
Hi Ruth, that was a great insight into living on a houseboat. I had an Uncle who lived on the canal for many years just a bit further along in his houseboat and he loved it. Thanks for also doing the cooking of Asian cuisine, I actually had some edamame soy beans with my spicy Korean chicken & tempura rice for my dinner tonight. Have a great week. 😊x
I enjoyed your video, but this Air B&B is not very typical of narrow boats I know. The clue is in the name: Narrow Boat. You were enjoying a moored wide beam boat which although it offers more living space would be a real challenge to navigate the canal system and would not fit into many locks, so your travel scope would be limited. Maintaining a narrow boat requires daily application to various tasks and the winter months can see canal closures. Narrow boats are great, but lets keep it real! Thanks.
This is a widebeam boat, it is designed for living on and has its own mooring with electricity. There are hundreds of variations boats to live on, modern ones like this might cost £180K, and more, my twenty year old narrowboat would be about £60k,
I've watched several TV series of people maneuvering their boats through the narrow British canals for weeks and weeks, very entertaining, and it took me a while to realize, Ruth isn't going anywhere! That's a fantastic boat compared to the ones I saw on TV.
You would hear a lot of banging if they didn’t have the blue ball in between the boat and the dock. They use those to prevent you from having that loud banging sound so you hear the creaking instead. The canal from what I have seen is usually very still unless you have a storm. I follow someone who travels with her boat and she lives in it too but it’s a bit more eco friendly. That boat looks real nice. I would live there full time if I could lol
Lovely video again - you are so right that canal boats and many of their fittings are just like campervans - we love them both. Note that this was a wide beam boat (~14 feet wide) - if you really want to feel like you're in a floating campervan you need to try a narrowboat (~7 feet wide, so really like living in a long thin van)
I love canals and barges, we used to holiday on the canals sometimes when i was growing up, that and the norfolk broads (and camping), my cousin now lives on a boat and last we spoke he was watching moor hen chicks and hoping they survived the big fish lurking below (think he said they were pike) This boat is rather lovely, and it's so spacious.
the Bow (pronounced baw) thruster named after the front of the boat ,the bow, is a propeller that runs across the bottom of the boat to let you dock more easily as it pushes the front of the boat sideways , best wishes Darren x
You are very courageous. My late friend Chuck was head librarian at Coca Cola headquarters in Atlanta, Georgia for many years back years ago now. It is a good paying job. All batteries are DC. Hello from the rocky mid-coast of Maine, US. Monday, May 6th, 2024..
Fantastic video Ruth and something really different. When you see how the designers have utilised a limited space it makes you realise how poorly space is used in the average bricks and mortar house.
Such a beautiful boat! Love how cozy it is, feels like home and there is nothing better than a log burner 🤩 Would definitely have a wee Laphroaig in the evening 🙂thanks for sharing Ruth 🥰
We stayed in a log cabin near Algonquin Provincial Park in Ontario in the spring of 2023, and next to hiking in the Park, the woodstove was the highlight.
Hi Ruth ! I became a fan of your TH-cam channel. Loved this episode a lot. Mmm, about that marshmellow chocolate cake: it is commercially named "mellow cakes" here, but perhaps you wouldn't want to know what the popular name is in Flanders, hahaha !
You have been spoiled by it being a wide berth and not a narrow boat as more commonly found on the English Canals. You will have to try one of those now to compare the two. Great video. Thank you for sharing. 👏👏👍😎
What a tremendously good and informative video. The bathrooms looked better than in a decent hotel and in fact the facilities on the boat in general looked excellent. And having a washing machine - how fortunate! No wonder you enjoyed your stay there.
What a lovely wide beam narrowboat as we say in the midlands. I'm a narrowboat enthusiast. Seems very well equipped. Would you have been allowed to cruise in it, or is it just stationary for visitors. 💚
16:00 Thats what I sometimes doubt if this lady is scottish with that clear accent. The boat is a nice opportunity for the ones who'd like to stay in cool places. Thank u so so much for this video Ruth.
She talks exactly like my former neighbour, we were born in Lanarkshire, very near Glasgow East End but with a more refined accent. In our formative years it was important to cultivate a pleasant accent, some parts of NE Scotland it is almost an English twang.
I spent most of my adult life living outside of Scotland. When I first moved overseas I worked with 45 different nationalities and it was necessary to speak slower and more simply as most people were not native speakers. I think because of that, I lost of Scottish accent a little.
OhMiGosh. Watched my first of your videos about the Bothy about an hour ago and thought you would probably enjoy narrow boating. And now, this video pops up. You did two days. I’d like to do two seasons. I have Narrow Boat Envy. (I hope you are happy with yourself.)
Lovely wide beam. I sold my narrowboat last year after living on her for 16 years. 16 happy years, but it was time for a change. It’s a great lifestyle. People say “Is it not cold and damp in Winter?” I always say, you can tell a liveaboarder. The are walking round in Winter with a T shirt on and all the windows open.
That's a very nice boat. I use to have a canal boat many years ago. They are nice if the weather is warm, but in the winter you can never stay warm. Also with the pump out, some places there are special pump out boats that will come to your boat and pump it out for you. If you live full time you will need to have this done often. Every winter our pipes would freeze and burst and we would need repairs. With the cost of maintaining one and the fees you have to pay, I don't think it's worth it.
Oh Ruth, I just loved the boat. What a great idea. Thanks for showing us. I live in the US and don't see them here. Tell the owner to look up the Cinderella toilet in Sweden. It burns #2 to ashes, really cool.
Hi Ruth.Thank you for another wonderful programme. As always done very well, & a very interesting watch.Looks very cosy indeed on a house boat in Scotland.Well done.Tom 😁
Whoa! This houseboat is like a very well appointed two bedroom apartment. It would easily cost $1,000,000 to buy in New York or Boston where I live. So nice. With the title about canal boat life I thought maybe you'd be traveling along the canal. So nice that you stayed near the city center. I visited Glasgow for a few days way back in 1983. Don't think I saw the canal though. This video makes me think I should consider a return visit.
It was funny hearing you speak of the wood stove. We order our wood by the logging truck so about 55 ton, buck and split the trees, season the wood then heat the house with it next year, all winter. That load lasts four to five years. There is no novelty anymore. 😃
Awesome, thanks. Worked in Spiers Wharf for two years and always wondered what they looked like inside. Much bigger and nicer than I thought. It's such a cool area.
I've rented a boat and spent a week cruising up the Caledonian canal a couple of times - awesome, and the first time we left the canal at Fort Augustus into Loch Ness it felt like heading out to sea. Fabulous experience. Something special about being on the water
Truly that is fantastic, we have spent many a holiday on a canal boat in Amsterdam, Paris( right below the Eiffel and in Bruges! Then we dared to go barging on the canal midi. That was magical!
I've seen the topic of life on a ship in France on a Japanese program, but this is my first time seeing it in Scotland. It's fun to see the various ideas for life in a car. Unfortunately, this used to be the case in Japan, but regulations are no longer strict in modern times.

@@ruthaisling Yes, I did. And thanks for the lovely almost opening shot of Sauchiehall St. at the corner of Hope St. - my old neighborhood!
How interesting that your uncle lived near there. Your dinner sounds amazing!
Nice to meet you, Ruth. Thank you for sharing that adventure. Absolutely lovely

One of the best videos on you tube I've seen. Nice work!
Wow, thanks!
Glad you enjoyed my boat.
Thanks.
The canals of UK are either wide or narrow, the Forth and Clyde is wide, very comfy to live on these.
This is a widebeam boat, it is designed for living on and has its own mooring with electricity. There are hundreds of variations boats to live on, modern ones like this might cost £180K, and more, my twenty year old narrowboat would be about £60k,
Nice video once again.
Just to give you the correct terminology: the 'buoy' between the boat and the jetty is called a 'fender' . 😀
Thanks for the info!
It was really nice!
I bet I could sleep good..I always did when I had a water bed..... Very cozy inside...❤

I'll need to try a narrowboat sometime!
Sounds like you had a fab time. The canal boat looked superb and what a spot to be moored in. I enjoyed you enjoying a less hectic lifestyle ❤
It was nice to chill out and not worry about driving anywhere for a few days
I love canals and barges, we used to holiday on the canals sometimes when i was growing up, that and the norfolk broads (and camping), my cousin now lives on a boat and last we spoke he was watching moor hen chicks and hoping they survived the big fish lurking below (think he said they were pike)
This boat is rather lovely, and it's so spacious.
Use dinner plate for lid for fry pan if steaming
the Bow (pronounced baw) thruster named after the front of the boat ,the bow, is a propeller that runs across the bottom of the boat to let you dock more easily as it pushes the front of the boat sideways , best wishes Darren x
Thank you 🙏
A kitchen on a boat is called a galley bedrooms are called state rooms and bathrooms are called a head.
Thanks for posting! I walk past this canal boat every weekend and have often wondered what its interior was like.
Irn bru was invented as a hangover cure when you’ve drunk too much whiskey. What a gorgeous home that is!
😂
All my friends drink it when they are hungover so that makes sense haha
You are very courageous.
My late friend Chuck was head librarian at Coca Cola headquarters in Atlanta, Georgia for many years back years ago now. It is a good paying job.

Hello from the rocky mid-coast of Maine, US. Monday, May 6th, 2024..
As a yank, I love listening too you talk.
Great video Ruth
Thanks 🙏
Fantastic video Ruth and something really different. When you see how the designers have utilised a limited space it makes you realise how poorly space is used in the average bricks and mortar house.
Thanks for watching, glad you enjoyed the video!
Such a beautiful boat! Love how cozy it is, feels like home and there is nothing better than a log burner 🤩 Would definitely have a wee Laphroaig in the evening 🙂thanks for sharing Ruth 🥰
also, loved all the old photos of the canal!
You guys are the log burner kings haha! 🔥
@@ardview-vanlife So interesting to see what it used to look like and how important it was for business and trade!
We stayed in a log cabin near Algonquin Provincial Park in Ontario in the spring of 2023, and next to hiking in the Park, the woodstove was the highlight.

Stunning boat
Great commentary
What a beautiful place to stay
It really was!
I'd love to see inside one of the more narrow ones. Thanks for watching!
@@ruthaisling You will be shocked how much smaller it will feel, in all dimensions 🥴
I didn’t know what edomine (that could be misspelled.) till about nine years ago and I’m 73 years old. 😂😂 I do love them. 👍
On a vessel the kitchen is called the galley.
Love your vids!
Thanks for telling me, I'm new to boats and all the terminology!
What a tremendously good and informative video. The bathrooms looked better than in a decent hotel and in fact the facilities on the boat in general looked excellent. And having a washing machine - how fortunate! No wonder you enjoyed your stay there.
Thanks Raymond! It was a great experience!
The technical term for those curtains is a porthole bung
Thanks for the info!
Thank you, Ruth. An excellent and fascinating report/review!
What a lovely wide beam narrowboat as we say in the midlands. I'm a narrowboat enthusiast. Seems very well equipped.
Would you have been allowed to cruise in it, or is it just stationary for visitors. 💚
It's just stationary for visitors I believe!
Terrific video. What a great accommodation.
Thanks for another great video. Very informative, as usual, and so well edited. Great to see you enjoying yourself as always.
Glad you enjoyed it!
I can't believe how big it is and every comfort you could wish for, I am amazed !
I was surprised too!
That sounds a great experience, did you move into a house?
That's definitely a house boat not a canal boat - it's huge! What a lush place to stay, thanks for the tour.
Thanks for watching!
That sounds interesting, thanks for sharing about the toilet!
You should!!
It was funny hearing you speak of the wood stove. We order our wood by the logging truck so about 55 ton, buck and split the trees, season the wood then heat the house with it next year, all winter. That load lasts four to five years. There is no novelty anymore. 😃
Amazing!
Awesome, thanks. Worked in Spiers Wharf for two years and always wondered what they looked like inside. Much bigger and nicer than I thought. It's such a cool area.
Thanks for watching, nice place to work!
I've rented a boat and spent a week cruising up the Caledonian canal a couple of times - awesome, and the first time we left the canal at Fort Augustus into Loch Ness it felt like heading out to sea. Fabulous experience. Something special about being on the water
That sounds like a great trip!
Truly that is fantastic, we have spent many a holiday on a canal boat in Amsterdam, Paris( right below the Eiffel and in Bruges! Then we dared to go barging on the canal midi. That was magical!
Sounds like great holidays you’ve had!
Thank you for sharing your stay on the long boat, Ruth. It was a cozy boat house. ❤️
It was so lovely!! 😊
I've seen the topic of life on a ship in France on a Japanese program, but this is my first time seeing it in Scotland. It's fun to see the various ideas for life in a car. Unfortunately, this used to be the case in Japan, but regulations are no longer strict in modern times.
That sounds interesting!
What a brilliant houseboat, thank you!
Glad you like it!
Karl like. Him like boats. This is three times bigger than a standard hotel room, with much better amenities and and ambience.
Loved your small cabin on the island for a week!
So did I! 😍
