I am in Canada now, because my 3 times great grandparents, Donald McGillivray and his wife, Annie MacDonald arrived in Canada in 1849/50 after his parents and siblings were part of the highland clearances by the Duke of Argyll from the Isle of Iona, and her parents and family were evicted from Mull. They had been married for 13 years before coming to Canada. My great great grandmother Mary McGillivray was born on Iona in 1840. Sadly only one of Donald's siblings, his brother Malcolm got out. Malcolm ended up in Australia...the rest of the 8 siblings died as paupers. His parents both died within 6 months of being evicted ... they were crofters. On a happy note, Donald was given 200 acres of wilderness area here on the shore of the great lakes with a promise to clear and settle the land.... and instead of clearing it for farming, he was approved to open the areas first sawmill and used the trees as income, and his lumber was used in most of the homesteads, some still standing today. He ended up doing very well for himself.
We go to Mull for Christmas every year and that always includes a trip to Iona… so beautiful and remote even today… can’t imagine living there in the mid 19th century! Thx for sharing
I love your philosophy that it’s not a treasure hunt. It’s reuniting articles with the families that left them behind. Such a sad time in our history. Well done Willy.
I love watching Jack living his best outdoor dog life and I'm like showing my dog and he's like, nah, I'm going to be a tiny furry potato instead, thanks though. Also it's really lovely to see young Scottish people moving to Skye to live full time instead of just rich folk buying a holiday home that they live in a week a year 💚.
Absolutely stunning video! Willie, I am a historian, and I wholeheartedly support your metal detecting and giving back or to a museum. It is so important for people to know their history. Thank you for sharing and as always love Jack Spaniels. See you next week!!
Time to become a student of geology, Wullie! You can enlighten us to the formation of Skye, which is a geology treasure hunt! My own family left Skye during the clearances and headed inland. They were Blacksmiths and had a forge in Uig before moving to Daviot near Inverness, eventually ending up founding the Stobswell forge in Dundee.
Wonderful as always! Love those drone shots. Skye is just gorgeous and I'm so happy that you share it with all of us. Willie, I love your music. You are so talented. I find myself humming your songs as I go about my day. It's just so soothing and happy. Cheers from across the pond!
I am not surprised that your channel is becoming popular and on the rise. Willie your music is lovely and you tell your stories so well and I love the strum of the guitar to announce the next chapter. You are a true story teller the both of you. Sarah and your adventures are a highlight for me and Jack Spaniels is an added bonus, he is so adorable. Loved your metal detecting finds and look forward to your next adventures.
Is there any place on Skye that isn't stunning? No? That's what I thought. The color of the sea at Talisker Bay is glorious and that waterfall is a sight to behold. As always, Jack Spaniels is living his best water loving, Willie & Sarah loving, stick & ball crazy life with y'all. He's such a character, it's impossible to be in a bad mood watching him and his antics.
I love the variety of activities you present on this channel. It’s amazing how interesting we viewers find the observance of your lives on Skye! The scenery is mesmerizing and you both are fun and genuine. And Jack is icing on the cake! Thanks for sharing and congrats on the up and coming accolades!
This is such a natural, interesting, stunning, professionally put together vlog, it is a joy to watch. It is no wonder you are a "Creator on the Rise". I look forward to watching each week. 🥰👏
Again I would like to say congratulations, you both deserve it, I am so glad I found your channel. Awww...Jack prancing around so proud of that big stick on the beach, so cute.
You two (and Jack, of course) are a pleasure to watch. My husband & I have done major traveling back in the early 2000’s & relating to you is so easy and joyful. Thank you…life is made great by your wishes, dreams and happiness. Barb
Thanks to you for risking frostbite to provide us with such beautiful scenes! It's amazing where you live, but I don't have to tell you that. Bless you for sharing this place with us! Love your acoustic music Willie!
Congratulations 🎉 on the recognition. Love your honesty, challenges, goals and humour and of course how you capture those amazing views. Jack Spaniels never disappoints. Amazing to see the thistle detail on the found button. Enjoy your week and take care of each other. ❤️❤️
Thank you for that walk to a very beautiful waterfall. The rock and chain gate closing was a fun idea. How amazing was that you had that whole area to yourselves. How luck are you! Willie you took one for the team. Your both such good sports. That water had to be absolutely freezing. Sara glad you convinced him to go. Great music Willie for your videos. Now to be able to walk around ruins where the vikings lived. Crazy lucky and to find cool things in the dirt. Love your videos. I'm smiling the whole time.
Congratulations on the TH-cam Creator on the Rise accolade. Well deserved. Another entertaining show with history included. The Scottish people were and are very strong and determined people. Sometimes I wonder how I ever got born. My ancestors came to Prince Edward Island Canada around 1807-09. They were fortunate enough to not be part of the clearance(s) according to what I have been able to find on both sides, Dewar and Bell. I am astonished on how many names of places here come from Scotland. Beautiful places and you are both so talented. Thank you.
Congratulations on the well-deserved TH-cam acknowledgement and thanks for another wonderful Sunday episode. I continue to really enjoy the vibe of your channel. The music has in particular been a favorite, and I love when you feature the history of an area. IF you would ever consider taking Skye requests, I'd love to see a visit to the Dunscaith Castle ruins - it was a highlight of my visit. Keep up the great work and thank you. :)
18min in and I'm crying the highlands clearing story and how important history is I didn't think I could like you both anymore than I already am. You both are wonderful people, thank you for sharing your life!
oh my! I'm SOO happy to see your videos including something of Sarah's walk/paint and something of Willie's bottles/metal detection...and of course Jack! I wish I had a spaniel, so much personality. What I love about your videos is the variety - that's rare in vlogs, and most refreshing. Something for everyone...
Love your music ,Willie . Absolutely love your channel to bits. You are both the best. Willie,Sarah and Jack. Please give Jack a hug. (I know you will) 😉 You are both so brave in that water. Love all your finds
As always we loved this visit. That is what i think of them as. Takes us away from our worries and makes us smile. Thank you for all your hard work. You two, and of course Jack Spaniels, have become one of our very very fave You Tube channels. Hugs to that adorable bundle of furry energy, AKA Jack. 😁🐶
My eighth great-grandparents emigrated from Scotland to America in the mid-1600s. I'm excited to be learning a bit of Scottish history and will be delving more in to the history of the Highland Clearances, which I've never heard of. You two and Jack Spaniels are a treasure. Am looking forward to seeing your new life on Skye evolve. Many good wishes from New Mexico USA.
I am always stunned by your video's. The quality of your drone shots, along with the content. Wow! Just knocks my socks off, but, I would have to think twice about walking in that icy cold water. I am truly loving the history lessons and seeing where my ancestors came from in the Highlands.
What a stunning stunning place! The views are breathtaking seriously I really lovey rocky beaches! Of course u film them so beautifully! Willie, I think ur music has improved a lot since the move! Living in that beautiful place will do that to a good artist and musician! 💕💜❤️
"The weather conditions here are pretty crazy", says Willie. Yep.....in Scotland waterfalls go up!! 15:40 🤣 Loving your incidental music which fits well with each scene. All the photography is superb with each episode well edited and presented.....very professional.
I’m so happy for both of you for following your hearts! The videos and scenery are just breathtaking. I hope the summertime will come to your bit of the world very soon. These last few months have looked so cold and damp. Nice to see the sunshine beginning to emerge in your videos!
What an awesome video! You showed us so much and the promise of a few more adventures. Not only that… Jack Spaniels got a ball he really treasures! My great great grandfather came from there to Cape Breton in Nova Scotia during the Highland Clearances. He was a John Beaton who’s son married a Mary Cameron. Their son John Beaton was my grandfather. His wife passed in childbirth leaving at least five children who survived childhood. My mother was the oldest and raised her youngest brother with the help of her grandmother. My great grandmother lived to 93 and wrote to me just before her passing with her blessings for my future. What I’m getting to is, were there any Beatons with a son John among the families who lived there in Skye? You did say many families from there went to Nova Scotia. I watched Nicola White’s video today about her digging with you both and it included the cut down cod bottle. So, I’ve had a lovely evening watching these two videos. Next I’ll check SWFbeachlife where we pick up shells on the west coast of Florida. That’s my escape from being snowed in in Ontario. Did I express how much I enjoy your videos and arts? Well, I do.
I so look forward to your videos every week. It’s so amazing beautiful there. I did lol when Willie went into that deep part of the sea/stream. I’ve never seen another dog like Jack Spaniel’s enjoying his life so much, he’s living the dream. Take care with the snow over the next few days, looks like your getting a far bit. 🙂
I had to hold in my laughter (at least until I knew he was ok anyway…😅). Yes we’ve been loving the sunshine and calm days this week…it’s due to change tomorrow! We will see what happens…
Hi Willie and Sarah, I just want to thank you both for sharing your brilliant video's! They are so informative showing a wide variety of your everyday lives. Keep up your great work! Lot's of love, Jackie from Sunderland.
This was beautiful. First I must say that being Hispanic and have year round brown skin, I broke out laughing at Willie's bright white legs 😂. The scenery was spectacular! I especially loved the ones of the calm ocean waves on the shore with the silhouettes of the mountain cliffs glimmered in this beautiful color of grey and black hues. Absolutely magical. Isn't nature just the best gift we have on earth 🥰🐕🇺🇸
Seeing the beauty of Talisker Bay and the waterfall was lovely, of course Jack living his best dog life is always wonderful too! It is neat to learn a bit of history as well, thanks for sharing Willie. Look forward to seeing the shed building adventures
What a sad story about the Highland Clearances, you are a good man Willie to want to return things to family. I know that would mean the world to me. I thought for a second that we had lost you to the Talisker River! Thank goodness we didn’t.😂 I love all the music you create for the videos.
Commenting for the algorithm. I am never as profound as the comments already made. Your jolly band of subscribers appreciates your talents and hard work. And I am a proud member of that group!
Thank you for sharing your adventures and love of your land and Country it is very beautiful. My Ancestors are from there but unfortunately I don't have any extensive knowledge of my lineage. I love your content and I continue to pray for you both and Jack Spaniels! May your step be light and your money sack heavy. special woof woof to Jack Spaniels!
@@livingtheskyelife Please send some of that lovely, clean Skye air down to London! I'm so glad that life on Skye is coming together for both of you as moving from a city to such a rural area was a huge adjustment in many ways. Jack is having the life of his life and is such a star!
The archival detecting was very interesting. My husband who is 83 grew up digging Native American artifacts, which were donated to local museum. And he ans his Dad spent a lot of time metal detecting churches, fair grounds, schools etc.
I so enjoy the videos. I’ve learned so much about the landscape and history from these and Sarah’s. My Gran left Scotland when she was 8 for Canada in 1907, and she still had the Scottish brogue when I was a child. Today, when Jack Spaniels asked what everyone was “greetin “ about it took me way back to my childhood and made me smile. It went like this..wheesht now, and quit your greetin…….. before you get a bat in the lug. Lol. You didn’t mess with granny lol. I too also enjoy the music and look forward to Sundays.
I enjoyed this post. My husband is a MacDonald. His ancestors came over to Pictou, Nova Scotia,( New Scotland},Canada on the Ship Hector in 1773. We still live in the Pictou area. The town has a historic museum about the Ship Hector and has a replica ship which is presently under repair. We are hoping to come your way this fall. Something my husband has always wanted to do. Loving all the scenery of the Isle of Sky . Thank you! ps…love your accents👌
Hi, just loved this episode, 'epic', the scenery is beyond words of appreciation. Your both such talented people, I can see a future Doggy Story Book, titled Jack Spaniels Skye Adventures. With beautiful illustrations, and CD narration, accompanied by original music. Oh the stories Jack could tell, especially about his humans too. Go for it.
Your videos are just wonderful. They make me wish that I could be there. You seem to have a lovely home and beautiful countryside to roam. And Jack is a joy to have. Can't wait for your next video and congratulations on your up and coming you both deserve it. ( Jack also ). Anyway love from the U.S.A.🌈
Love the channel! As an expat from Glasgow now living in the USA, I am in awe of the beauty of my homeland and the areas that I never visited while living there. 🏴
Loved this .The clearances is such a sad episode in our history .That just have been a very substantial settlement .There are a number of other places that were cleared in Skye including Glendale .I once had a tour of Talisker house .Keep up the good work.
How exciting! Willie, I do miss your bottle digging adventures, but I am chuffed with your Skye Life. Your shared hikes & exploration are very pleasing. Having walked with Sara it was nice to see the three of you together. I am especially chuffed with your TH-cam recognition. Congratulations! Big Love from Ventura, CA! 💜
When I was a child we visited Aunt Sarah, we had to use stepping stones to get across the creek to her old house. There was no way to drive to that house. She also used the same tick with the gate (only it was an old rusty bucket filled with rocks). I wonder where she learned to do that? Jack always has a wonderful time. It is so beautiful there. Some places over there remind me of places here in Kentucky. It is no wonder to me why so many Scotch/Irish people settled here.
I agree about being an up and coming Channel. Such diverse and interesting content presented by 3 interesting, charming and talented people. Jack is a person, isn't he 😂
Possibly one of my favorite videos so far, the scenery was incredible, and your filming/drone work was amazing. Adore Sarah's elfish smile, it is like she knows grand secrets that the rest of us do not. I think our dog Zelda has a crush on Jack, she watches the screen and whines when she sees him.
O I so look forward to Sunday nights to see what you three have been up to. Loved the waterfall and Willie's white legs. I thought for the moment on the way back you were going to end up on your butt in that icy water. Glad you did'nt. Love you all and the music you make for the videos. Nice too to have a present from Savannah. Stay safe and look after each other big X for Jack Spaniels.
Another really great episode. Thanks! I'm so pleased the channel's getting the accolades it so thoroughly deserves. I thought the content combination and creation was very clever and the way you weaved some fascinating history around your metal detecting was really engaging. The freezing cold paddle had me cringeing and I wasn't surprised that the star of the show carried on without complaint (BTW I love those 'Wags'). Thanks so much! 😊
Thank you for braving a paddle in February to get us those stunning shots of the amazing bay! Loved every minute of this video! Looking forward to seeing the Byrne transformation too! Your videos are amazing!
The walk to the falls was a real treat, wonderful drone work Willie, highlighting the stunning beauty of your and Sarah’s new world. Jack spaniels definitely in his element! Good luck with the Reno.
Every time i watch these videos i think clean fresh air..i just love watching. Great to see you doing a bit of detecting , must say i am missing Dirty Secrets of Scotland it used to make my Sunday nights, so hoping it will return soon. Lovely to see Jack so happy . I think you should write him his own special song . Looking forward to the next espisode and the progress with the byre
Thanks so much!! The byre conversion will keep a very busy over the next couple of months as we are doing as much as we can ourselves, but after that we should have some more time for our hobbies 😊
Stuff 2 plastic bags (one to fit each foot) and a spare pair of socks in your backpacks. Put the bags on your feet before getting socks and boots wet and change into dry socks if the bags don't work well enough. Thanks for sharing the beauty of Skye. Hunting social history - a noble quest.
What incredible scenery?AND…. The aerial shots were spectacular! Looked like a professional movie. Thank you so much for getting your feet wet for us. It looked mighty cold! Glad neither one of you fell. Jack spaniel certainly had a good time. I am so excited to see the new project get started. Not half as excited as you guys I’m sure. I sure wish I could contribute to it. The only thing I can do is watch the commercials. Which is hard to do because I want to get back and see what’s going on with the next scene! Lol I guess I will learn to be patient. Thanks guys beautiful Vlog love from California.💜🤗🤟🏻😎🇺🇸
Love, Love, Love you guys! I'm a Canadian with deep Scottish roots. Paternal GG Grandfather was from Kelso. Came to Canada as a British soldier to fight the war of 1812. Maternal GG grandfather came to Canada as a newborn to Nova Scotia. I went to Scotland in 2012 to find out more. didn't learn any more about my roots, but fell involve with Scotland.
And by the way, I'm in love with Jack Spaniels. My husband and have a Brittany Spaniel named Sadie. She is so much a member of our family. I wish Canada had cafe's and pubs that would allow us to bring our furry family members to.
Well deserved award ,you 3.I look forward to my weekly dose of peace, tranquility, good music and stunning scenery.Really interesting channel.Keep them coming.
Great video. Loving the metal detecting , it's sad about the Highland/ Skye clearance. Life may have been very different on Skye if the people had continued to live there. It was nice to see the Coffee shop , if possible it would be good to have a tour of your nearest town/ shops just to get an idea of how you manage shopping etc. Thank you.
The scenery never ceases to AMAZE me, Willie I love your drone shots! Thanks, just watched Nicola's video. Enjoyed that again. I am excited to see the work on the out building. Thanks Sarah, Willie and Jack!!!

Hardly surprising that you’re an up and coming channel. I love watching your adventures. Keep up the good work! ❤

Same here, (I get excited when I see a new video posted).
Sunday is Sarah Willie and Jack day. Put it in your diary!
Hi Willie and Sarah, I just want to thank you both for sharing your brilliant video's! They are so informative showing a wide variety of your everyday lives. Keep up your great work! Lot's of love, Jackie from Sunderland.
So lucky to live in such a beautiful place 💛
We count ourselves very lucky to be here! 😊
Thank you for braving the cold water to show us the views! It’s beautiful. It was nice to see some of your metal detecting also. ❤️
Well done you guys! Good laugh, great music, beautiful scenery, and most importantly, Jacks Wags. Always a joy. Thankyou
This is the cosiest channel to watch on a Sunday evening - a nice way to end the weekend!
Really cool seeing the glass being transformed
Creators on the rise - woohoo! Love watching your videos. Love your energy and creativity (and of course I love Jack too)
Thank you for sharing your adventures and love of your land and Country it is very beautiful. My Ancestors are from there but unfortunately I don't have any extensive knowledge of my lineage. I love your content and I continue to pray for you both and Jack Spaniels! May your step be light and your money sack heavy. special woof woof to Jack Spaniels!
Well-deserved congratulations on this accolade. Keep up the good work from this beautiful place!
Thank you Sue!! 😊
It’s amazing what fragments of history you can discover 😊
I so enjoy the videos. I’ve learned so much about the landscape and history from these and Sarah’s. My Gran left Scotland when she was 8 for Canada in 1907, and she still had the Scottish brogue when I was a child. Today, when Jack Spaniels asked what everyone was “greetin “ about it took me way back to my childhood and made me smile. It went like this..wheesht now, and quit your greetin…….. before you get a bat in the lug. Lol. You didn’t mess with granny lol. I too also enjoy the music and look forward to Sundays.
Just such a well-rounded amazing couple. Really enjoying your vlogs.
Thank you so much! 😊
That bottle is so neat
How exciting! Willie, I do miss your bottle digging adventures, but I am chuffed with your Skye Life. Your shared hikes & exploration are very pleasing. Having walked with Sara it was nice to see the three of you together. I am especially chuffed with your TH-cam recognition. Congratulations! Big Love from Ventura, CA! 💜
Thanks Beth! We are really enjoying our move so far and having so much to explore on our doorstep 😊
Thanks!Love watching your blogs ,I live in Lancashire England and would love to visit Skye one day, keep making your entertaining content
Seeing those empty homesteads breaks my heart. The area is just stunning and am not surprised that there was a village there.
Skye is absolutely stunning! Wherever you've taken us has been breathtakingly beautiful, also steeped in history. Thanks for sharing. ,😊🌼
I agree about being an up and coming Channel. Such diverse and interesting content presented by 3 interesting, charming and talented people. Jack is a person, isn't he 😂
He certainly thinks he is!!
Accolades well deserved!! Thanks Willie and Sarah. Amazing video. Love the Jack wags!
You’re almost persuading me against moving to Norway- almost! Love to you all x
The music is truly magnificent. Jack and his continuous stick!!
Congratulations on being "up & coming"!!! 🎉 Good to know that hard work pays off. 🥰
Jack is having a wonderful time. Lol
Fingers crossed you find ten golden coins Willie 🤞
Thanks both, content of vlogs keeps getting better every week❤
Ah, Willie, your intro to the search was quite moving. Thanks for the reminder of that dark period and the widespread impact.
Well deserved accolades to you both! You live in such a beautiful place!
Thanks Debbie!! It was great looking back on that day with Nicola - we had such a great time 😀
Congratulations on your award. Highly deserved! You have created a wonderful channel. Such enjoyment. Thank you for sharing your lives!
