You didn't mention one other thing about the last Shine:
- most players would expect that Pipe at the end of the course to bring you back to the start of the challenge. When in reality, it takes you back to Delfino Plaza.
I played that level for the first time yesterday and that's exactly what I did! And that was after it took me forever to get there with Yoshi. :(
What you can do is get as many coins as you can in one go. Then carefully walk back. If your really brave you can just jump and float from side to side to get the coins. I hate that level!

Well an easier way is to actually get the coin that’s high in the air only! Then the one on the platform. Then jump behind the gate jet to just about under the water. This gets you under the water and you can walk and won’t die. Get all the coins and one ups by diving and then jump right away. Y followed by A. Make your way back to the start. Then give yourself space for a triple jump at the start of the level. You have to jump 2 times very low but for the triple jump right out. That’s the only way I saw getting out and not dying. You can do it on the other coins but risk falling. Doing it back on the start is safer.
Ikr that was so annoying I ended up giving up and 100% galaxy
it’s even harder when your joy-con drifts literally the entire time
Am I the only one that doesn't have joycon drift? It happened to me once, when I got the controllers repaired, I didn't have the issue ever again

The absolute best advice I can give for Corona Mountain is this: where you stand in the boat DOES matter, so STOP standing in the BACK of the boat when trying to make subtle turns. It's much more intuitive to push the bow of the boat to either side and then spray water directly forwards or backwards in order to move.
Exactly what is so interesting about the boat is Nintendo designed it to work exactly like a kayak and canoe the back makes the boat turn fast the front less so and at the back it turns the same way you shoot the water just how the canoe turns to the same side you paddle on.
This also shows you how few people know how to canoe / kayak 😂
Definitely. When I got to the boat the first thing I did was run all over it to try and get the best angles for each and every subtle turn. It's the only way to effectively pilot the boat, and if you do that and take your time, it's quite easy. It also helps that I spent hours on the lilypad shine before doing it.
I found shooting small amounts one side at a time worked very well for me. Almost too easy. The side you spray is the way you go. Stand at the back side parts. With very little at the centre back to push forward.
The first star you show I got by long jumping from a higher place I didn’t even know there was a cannon there lol
Yo same when I first played mario 64 I learnt to do that and I've always done it since I found the canon eventually but I found long jumping to the star way easier
Also, acceding to the cannon ain't hard at all if you figured out that there's a teleporter on one of the shrooms over a pit where you collect two red coins that leads you at it
A way way easier way is to turn around at the start. Ride the gust up. Pass the one up you just literally jump off the edge and it puts you up. Once there jump on the shy guy who is next to the monkey and fly to that star. Easy!
The easiest way is bouncing off the fly guy.
That's the better way to do it
Fun fact: on stomp on the thwomp, you can beat it with time stopped. When you go to the area below the thwomp, with a triple jump and wall kick on the side wall you can reach the top

Yeah i did the same thing. I was scared at first that I couldn’t get there at first, but i did it anyway
As someone who casually speedruns SM64 I find all the stars to be a lot easier with the time stopped. It’s just one less thing you have to take into account when playing when you don’t have to worry about what you’re standing on moving and making you fall off the stage.

Watermelon festival isn't that hard, just time-consuming. If you use the dune buds to kill all the cataquacks first, the only real challenge is getting the watermelon across the bridge, and that's just a matter of taking it slow.
Kill all of the Plungelos on the beach before trying to roll the Watermelon and it’s easy.

When I was a kid, the only star I couldn't get in SM64 was the 100 coin in Rainbow Ride, glad it was on this list to bring back so, SO much childhood trauma.
This brings back memories! i remember i was over at a friend, he was frustrated about that exact star. So he let me have a few trys. I finally succeeded, and he was just like "OMG, you got me the hardest star in the game!!!" :D However, he returned the favor and got me the 100 coins star at tick tock clock, a star that i could never get myself.

To be completely honest I dont think that the manta ray boss isn't that difficult it's just more annoying then anything

It's just draining. It honestly took me about 10-15 minutes to get every last ray. There's so many of them lol
once you learn the r+B/A splash its really easy
I got that one on my first try. Once they turn red they'll come to you so all you have to do is sit still and spray them when they come to you.
Phantamanta is annoying yes, but he's honestly not that difficult of a boss, similar to King Boo where you just need to hope the roulette wheel lands on the fruits and not anything else
after playing Sunshine a billion times, my first All Stars play through was the first time i decided to ever go for the blue coins in Corona Mountain. i’d always thought it was way too hard as a kid. but with patience, and only moving the boat a little bit at a time, it’s easy quite easy! patience is key ✨ the poison river is also very frustrating, but a tip is to not try to get every red coin on the first run down the river and instead walk back along the edges to collect them or go back for a new lily pad (don’t go into the pipe!!) again: just take it slow :)
The way I got the lily pad one was making small movements to correct the course and let the river take me there.

Purple Coins in the Bone Pen always gave me trouble, you basically have to always stay in motion from Pull Star to Pull Star to ensure that you're getting Purple Coins fast enough to beat that 1 minute timer.
I personally felt the Dreadnought purple coins mission was a lot harder than the Toy Time one.

For anyone trying to do the lily pad shine, I highly recommend learning how to clip out of bounds and under Delphino Plaza with Yoshi. Just look up a tutorial and practice it for a bit, and it will save you so much time over riding the boats with Yoshi like the devs intended.

The Manta Storm is my favorite shine in the whole game! It's soooo much fun and it's got such a weird change in tone from the rest of the game. I don't see why it gets so much hate. The hardest shine in the game is the Sand Bird level. I HATE that one so much.

Scrubbing Sirena Beach always did it for me for some reason. The Manta Storm is good too. If you don’t know, Sirena Beach is my favourite stage.
sandbird is tough, and it's key to know that it turns on end once, and you need to turn the camera to the left right after, to know when he's turning toward the 8th coin/shine tower.
but i feel like the goopy inferno is impossible to get through, because the game just wants to murder you if you take a wrong step, and none of the paths work for me.
The elevator ride in the volcano in Mario 64's Lethal Lava Land can go fudge itself. Just wow.

Somehow I blasted through all those lava stars. I though I would rage. But yeah the camera would fuck me up in those elevators
Lmao i never even used the elevators just straight jumps, i got 120 3 times in my life, and just last weekend i beat 120 in less then 36 hours

What’s mean about the lily pad level: The water kills you AND the pipe at the end of the course takes you back to Delfino Plaza, forcing you to start all over (seriously, if you take the pipe and go back into the level all the red coins reappear and you have to start over)
Honorable mention for the Chuckster Pianta Red Coins. Talking to them at the right time was hard enough, but you could take your time; now doing that with a timer on top while collecting eight coins that are somewhat far from each other, you can get flung too far, not far enough or to the wrong place if you are slightly off when you talk to the Piantas. Also, I lost count on how many times I missed the rope when getting coins 5 and 6, as it is somewhat hard to tell if you've already passed it or you still need to advance a little more.
Pachinko took me like 5 tries, the Manta and Balloons 2 tries each, Lilly Pad about 10, but this one took me 20 tries!
I didn't even bother talking to the pianta to get to the rope...I just spin jumped and used the hover nozzle to reach the platform it's attached to. Made that shine pretty easy, imo.

The lily pad one wasn’t difficult, just poorly designed. The lack of 1ups in the game make game overs more likely. Having to wait like 5 minutes on a boat to try again just pads out the time it takes to beat (no pun intended).
They could of at least took out the goop on the pipe of you have already been able to get yoshi there
You can jump at the halfway pillar with the bananas from the manhole

This definitely doesn't excuse the poor design, but if you want to make your 100% playthrough easier on yourself, here's some recommendations:
Wait to do the level until after you have easy access to Pianta Village, and farm lives on the mushroom platforms below the level (outside the entrance to the Secret Level).
Alternatively, some of the secret levels, with practice, are easy enough to farm two lives per run and thus have a net positive of 1 each time.
You can also farm coins for lives (and the 100-coin shines) in Pinna Park Episode 2 (Spray the bullet bills = 2 coins a pop plus 8 for the gold ones) or in the plaza (as long as you don't die, each time you collect one of the shines in the plaza it will reset the coins to collect in the level but not your count; you can also go back and forth between the plaza and the airstrip for the same result in the postgame).
Finally, for the brave out there, there are several glitches that can be utilized to reach the island without using the boats; I'd recommend this method: th-cam.com/video/-tDclXyn6hA/w-d-xo.html

Honorable mention goes to getting that damn star on the roof of Big Boos Haunt in Mario 64
Oh my god I had to watch a video 12 times to get it and every time I slid off the roof. Took me an hour.

SM64 the wing cap level where you stare into the sun glare in the castle almost made me break my switch.
The boats in sunshine are inverted to where you aim fluud, it's really not that difficult to maneuver. Plus you are supposed to learn how to control the boats in noki bay
But the boats are never required for any of the mandatory Shines in Noki Bay so you have practically no reason to use them. And even if they were used, they don't ask you to do anything precise with them.
I never even learned how to use them in noki, you just need to fiddle around with it and take it slow tbh

I got most of the sunshine shines first try. The one that kinda gave me trouble was the lily pad one
I haven't delved into Galaxy as much on the collection, so goddamn did this video bring back a lot of memories from like, 12 years ago.
Personally I think nothing in galaxy even deserves to be on this list. The older games are on another level in terms of difficulty
You don't seem to have ever played Dreadnaughts Garbagedump, because throwing those bobomb precisly might sound easy at first, but the controls combined with the fact that, i believe, you couldn't miss a single throw, make this an utter sh*tshow. This f*cking Star still gives me PTSD from my childhood. On the rest of the featured Stars I would agree
@@nichtsoeren4384 I agree with both of these comments. I think the only level from galaxy that deserves to be on here is dreadnought garbage dump. That was fairly difficult but once you find out that you're supposed to be aiming for the coin spots, it takes many less attempts to beat (at least for me)

@@JezzaWest First of, it is "The Galaxy's Greatest Wave", not biggest. Second, at least for me personally, it never took more than one or two tries to do. So I never found it all that difficult
#1 was a nightmare back when I was a kid. It was literally impossible. Yet in All Stars 3d I managed go get to the level first try. And then got the shine only after 3 attempts. Yet I was mentally prepared to lose all the 30 something lives I had in the moment 😂
I thought catching the bunnies in the snow was the hardest star to get in Galaxy..
It's hard if you don't know what you're doing. I got it in about 5 attempts by memorizing where the bunnies hid, then trapping them in the holes at the end of the planet. I have no idea how you're supposed to catch them without trapping them tbh
0:50 i actually just long jumped from a really high spot to get that star just yesterday. It was much harder to get access to the cannon and once i did i realized its only use was to get that specific star.....

You don't need the clock moving in tick tock clock to get the thwomp star. You can do some fancy wall jumps to get up without the clock hand. Personally I find it much easier to do that star with time stopped.
Sunshine was one of my iconic childhood Mario games, and I'm playing it again through all stars. So glad you put the pachinko level in there, it kicked my butt until today. I don't think I'll ever complete the leaf secret tho. As you said, it's just so much of a hassle to get there
The red coin lily pad level in sunshine literally took and a half hours to complete, thank you for putting this one at the top.
My toughest level in Galaxy when I was younger was the timed Purple Coins comet in Gusty Garden Galaxy

THE hardest is the star in grand finale star. You will get dstracted so easy and for another problem it is a purple coin star
Personally lava spire galaxy was a fun and pretty straightforward galaxy. I had more difficulty with the daredevil runs of bouldergeist and queen kamek in deep dark galaxy. The part that made it more difficult is the sensitivity of the control stick versus the shake for spin. As I am more used to playing on the wii, spinning with Y doesn’t feel fluid
#5 was such a nightmare to me when I was young :O I remember try harding this level so haaaard before finally getting this frikin star
I found the purple coin challenges on the two on the rails courses to be harder than doing it in the lava level, especially when doing them as Luigi. The lava level requires some patience, but a level where the platform moves you away from the coins are worse since you can easily miss one if either Mario or Luigi starts doing that eternal running in circles thing.
Honestly i found that the pachinko machine isnt as hard as i remember. The hardest coin for me to get was the top left where the odd physics push you to the right... until i found out all you have to do is hold left and you'll go right in the slot.
I kept trying to ground pound into that slot until I just wall jumped up and made it in lol
Now I feel even happier beating the "Fast Foes on the Cyclone Stone" star.
Blast to the Lonely Mushroom could also be done by climbing half way up the mountain and long jumping.

Never could beat that one until now on 3D all stars and it took me sooo many tries !!! I finally got to the 7th coin and my heart was racing so fast thinking I was going to mess it up and then I couldn't get off that squid after getting the last coin!!

Good List, I agree with most of these placements. The only ones on here i never found very hard are Luigi’s Purple Coins, Red Hot Purple Coins, Pachinko Machine, Wing Mario Over The Rainbow, and Blast To The Lonely Mushroon (kinda), but thats just my opinion.

I did it first try lmao. I remember struggling when I was younger but I played it again on 3D all stars and it was easy as hell lol
I had to take a few tries to beat it in 3d all stars, but only because the bombs take like 20 seconds to blow up. Using a bomb to detonate other bombs is definitely essential

Y'all might be thinking of Battlerock, since it has a similar but much easier mission.
Do you know that the shiny points in the floor marks the place where you have to throw the bomb, right? It makes it a lot easier

I would personally like to add Bouldergeist Daredevil Run as an honorable mention that one kicked my butt so HARD
The secret to that fight is to run circles around him very close. About the same spot that his boulder throwing attack spawns from the ground. He will never punch forward when you are that close, and his hand slam won't ever hit you either. The boulders can only hurt you after they're thrown, which they should never hit you as long as you run donuts around him. I haven't lost a single life to his daredevil star in over a dozen runs of it.
The Secret of the Dirty Lake (i think to get the 2nd star) is so hard ! This is my first time playing Sunshine
I HATE the secret levels
So like, when I was replaying sunshine a few months ago i was dreading the olde lillypad and I decided I was going to go for it. I take 2 or 3 tries to get Yoshi into the level but then after like 20 minutes I got the shine. I was amazed at how easy it was. Like I just suddenly understood the level
The Manta Storm is significantly easier if you spray off the square area in the back (where the hotel spawns afterward) first. You can just take down mantas as they enter the square and there’s water all around it when you need to reload.

Tbh any star in shifting sand land can be made super difficult just due to 64’s awful camera especially the pyramid stars
And the secrets in the pyramid I always miss the platform and need to climb up all over again

Yes that was hardest for me and one in the dreadnaught. I never had much problem with luigi’s purple coins except when i played game for the first time.
No joke when using a touchscreen instead of a wii remote, I actually had a tougher time on the pull star race than the boneyard coins. I had to restart the race ten times because I couldn't see, but with the coins where you can randomly go, I had like 15 seconds left, a new personal record.

Mr. Sniffly dreadnought purple was one of the easiest imo
I agree with a lot of this list. Unlike most people, I honestly found Purple Coins in the Bone Pen from Ghostly Galaxy to be pretty easy once I got the hang of it. The trick is to just keep up your momentum by going from pull star to pull star and not aiming for any particular coins. You’re able to miss 50 coins so there’s lots of leeway even though the timer is a bit strict when you’re playing for the first time.
With that said, I would’ve put a few of the missions from Pianta Village here. Namely the secret chuckster course, the underground maze, and 8 red coins (mainly because of how precise you have to be with the dandelions to get to the damn shine itself and how punishing it is if you mess up having to start all over again). Maybe the 100 coin mission too.
Fun fact: Purple coins in the Bone Pen does not have 150 purple coins, like the game tells you. It only has 149 purple coins.
Wdym precise? The cloud that Shine is on is huge and the camera easily lets you get a good look at where to land, the real hard part is just finding all the red coins, and I mean finding, if you know where they are it's one of the easiest red coin missions in the game
@@KyleKiske There's one behind the starting planet, so technically 150 in total but obviously that one isn't worth going for because it takes 10 seconds just to get that and come back lol

Stomp on the Thwomp is possible with no clock movement. It requires wall jumps to get up to the platform near below the thwomp, a long jump to under the thwomp's platform, a triple jump + wall jump to under the thwomp itself, likely getting squished for 2 damage then jumping on top of the thwomp as normal.
For me the toughest was sirena beach ep 6, being timed to scrub that beach took me weeks no joke

Copy cat pachinko is easy. Here’s advice. To get the hardest one just don’t use the jet pack on the jump. When your at your highest point move left and if anything then use the water. You should land right on it. After that jump or ground pound. You will land on a nail in the center. From that point you can get the lowers ones. Then the upper right just use the jet pack. And the star is easy too because it you land on the nail just drop into it. Hope that helps you and others.
Number 14 that is a very helpful tip I never thought of that
I 100%ed Mario Sunshine last week. For me the hardest and most unlikeable Shine to get, was the Red Coin Challenge in Pianta Village with the chucksters. I almost gave up, because there is not much room for making mistakes. Even if you make one or two mistakes, the time limit is very tight. By the way: Finally somebody who also thinks that the camera in the pachinko machine stage doesn't work proberly. Nice video and keep up the good work ;)
I think the Luigi version of “Luigi’s Purple Coin Challenge” is actually even worse due to the way he controls.
He does have a higher jump which could help(?).

Finally collected that lily pad shine yesterday after much trial & error.
If you're unable to get all 8 on your first go, you have to hop onto the very slim walls of the river & run back to the beginning. Time consuming, but makes the challenge a bit more forgiving.
As for getting Yoshi to the island, skip the first couple boats by spin jumping to the wooden platform in front of the Pianta statue. It'll save you loads of time (trust me).
I just barely beat the Roller Coaster Balloon shine on my second try. I popped the last balloon a fraction of a second before the third lap completed. I'm glad I did because I definitely could've seen myself attempting that shine for ages.
You can do wall kicks with a way easier than both the normal and the speedrun way : jump on a flower guy on the top of the mountain and hover up to there.

I realize that I think the galaxy ones he chose were easy because I’ve spent over 500 hours playing this game
honestly i just 100% the game for the first time a week ago and the only difficult ones to me are daredevil lava spire and bouldergheist and luigis purple coins
I have 115 stars in sunshine and I swear all the levels he named aren't even that difficult so I feel that.
The wall kick star isn't for me the most frustrating star in cool cool mountain. By the last wall you can wall jump the sidewall and that's definitely easier. For me the snowball star is more difficult because you must start behind the snowball and it's difficult to get in front of. When you fall down or aren't fast enough, you can try again. I don't like this mission anyways.
I found the red coin mission to be the most difficult mission for me.
Might just need to quit playing video games if those were hard

I just got the second star you mentioned. It took me like 25 tries 😭 EVEN AFTER I FOUNF OUT THAT THE LITTLE COIN DOTS IN THE GROUND ARE MARKINGS TELLING YOU WHERE TO PUT THE BOMB IT IS STILL SO HARD TO DO

I was surprised about how many of the courses you mentioned were some of my favorites, I guess it shows how difficult level design doesn’t have to be unfair.

Getting to the cannon isn’t hard for the 1st star since there is a warp in that stage. Also, the lily pad & corona mountain sections are not hard at all, it’s all about using fludd properly & not rushing which is what it looks like people seem to do

spin jump fludd spray helps so much believe me
Spam spray is the best way to beat it. If you hard spray and jump at the same time you’ll do a splash with fludd that covers a wide area
I don't even remember this boss battle, except that I mainly just used the hover flood and took my time. Don't remember it being especially hard.
GrapeNation easier said than done, it is easy now on the switch because of the new controls and the internet, as a kid I didn’t even know spam spray existed let alone know how to do it

Im seriously not trying to brag but I have seriously replayed the games so many times that nothing is difficult in the games to me anymore
Where’s bouldergeist daredevil comit. That’s by far my hardest star in galaxy for sure.

I find it easy personally. Bouldergeist has a lot of predictable attacks that's easy to avoid
For me, at least in my opinion, the attacks may be very easy, but I don’t know what I’m doing wrong with it. Like it should be easy. It looks easy. Predictable. But for some reason it completely wipes me out every time.
I did it first try just today? Galaxy is mind numbingly easy...
I would've had Yoshi's Fruit Adventure in place of Manta Storm, I can't stand that one. 🤣

Been playing through Super Mario Sunshine for the first time in recent days. That boss battle seemed easy enough to me and didn't require a 2nd attempt. I barely squeaked through with the balloon bursting , but did so also on my first try. Corona Mountain took a couple of lives before I picked up on the physics and realized the boat wasn't going to decay on me, with it an easy pass with all blue coins on my 3rd try. And the lily pad level took 5 or so tries before it dawned on me that I could carefully return to the start of the level by walking on the sides. That Pachinko machine though sure took some learning...
After about 20 deaths, I started to realize that you're not supposed to be relying on FLUDD (The hover physics are nerfed as everyone knows, since it would've been ridiculously easy otherwise). It's more about your stick positioning after launch. It becomes a lot kinder as you start to pick up on that and the various stick positions to make Mario go to different spots on the board, instead of constantly fighting the Pachinko physics with FLUDD's neutered hover ability.
Save FLUDD for when Mario's momentum is almost done and you want to fine tune exactly where you're going to land, or if you get lucky and land on something like a peg that you can jump off of.
This doesn't change anything each game is just an emulator the hardest stars/shines will no doubt stay the same
But, this is still for content. TH-camrs love milking content.
So what I want to see what other stars people struggle with compared to me
I see where your coming from but you don't need a port of a game to see where other people struggle you could see an older list of hardest stars or shines or just look online i'm sure that someone made a list of their struggles but what i'm trying to say is that this collection are just emulators with minor text and texture changes and that there's not that much different about this collection so there were no gameplay changes so that would mean that the difficulty of the stars change. but I see what your saying

well the point that I am trying to make is that this isn't a full remake of a game and that this is an emulator with no gameplay changes and that therefore the difficulty of the stars/shines shouldn't change

Honestly, I never found a problem with the Pachinko shine. If I ever miss the top ones, I use my hover and try to get into the bottom ones so then I don’t save them for last.
