    Carissa, Iwan & Frankie decided one night over a bottle of wine that moving from North Wales to Portugal would be a good idea. Within a month they were on the road to Portugal to find the perfect piece of land to call their new home. We picked up Albi the cat along the way. Subscribe to follow our journey as we turn an old stone barn into our home, and learn the ropes of looking after a piece of land to make an abundant garden and one day, our very own winery.

    I HAVE A SMALL 10X18 OFFGRID SPACE FOR GUESTS AND I HAVE FOUND THE MORE COUNTER SPACE IN THE KITCHEN , THE BETTER. I JUST WENT FROM 4 FEET TO 6 FEET COUNTER UPGRADE A FEW DAYS AGO, AND THE 2 BURNER STOVE, RICE COOKER, CROCKPOT, AND COFFEEMAKER TOOK ALMOST OF THAT ROOM. ADD 6 MORE FEET AT LEAST. FOR BAKE SHEETS, PREP AREAS, A SINK. I AM DOING LIKE YOU ARE, BECAUSE I DONT HAVE MY HOUSE BUILT YET. SO THIS IS A GOOD TIME TO PREPARE. THE CEMENT WORK LOOKS GREAT, YES THE STONES ARE EPIC, BUT THE ROOM NEXT DOOR WILL HAVE THAT CHARACTER. THE LAND IS CLEAN AND TIDY TOO. KUDOS, JOB WELL DONE.

    The dust storm, which we also felt here in austria, is a yearly recurring event, which looks spooky, but leave tons of so precious micro nutrients for the nature all over europe. But you are right, after two or three days, this is getting depressing. I am dreaming a long time about what you have done - emigrating to portugal. I absolutely hate the winter, and growing my own food (at least for 8-9 months per year) here in austria for over 30 years now. So, maybe, some day...

      Hens are great critters - easily trained, too! Of course they will come running when called, if you feed them something nice/different. But you can also teach them not to go to some places - into the house, on to the road. They are no respecters of veg patches though! They WILL trash them looking for worms and bugs unless you keep them out. Khaki Campbell Ducks on the other hand make great veg grower companions - very helpful and non destructive

    I hope the car will be fixed without costing too much of a bundle. More rain is good after being dry for some months. I think the breeze block design would be artsy and eclectic. Which is good. When you get more constructed, Karissa's graphic art should be prominently displayed.🙂👍👍👍

    I love watching all angles of stonework . And I appreciate your post!! It seems it is not an easy job producing films for us to watch. And just like any celebrity that chooses a career in the public eye there is a responsibility. I would be terribly disappointed if I turned my tv on to watch a favorite show and it wouldn't be there... So thanks. But it is important to try and maintain a "normal" life..with rest and fun. It's nice to have chickens in the house especially to play with dad. Thanks again for sharing !!💕

    I think you need to bring the breeze blocks lower down as the cooker/worktop will be too wide for you to reach most of them, only the section in the middle that is going to be narrower it could work.
    IKEA make narrow base units too 37cm deep I think.... We put them and they have been a game changer especially the cutlery drawer and was so inexpensive.

    I love the cubby holes, the kitchen is going to look great😍 Chinese artichokes can be invasive, we had a real problem with them on the allotment site where I used to grow. The horticultural society advise using plastic or something as a barrier to stop them spreading. This may not be a problem in Portugal as it’s so much dryer than Wales. Pleased you have had lots of rain 🌦

    What do you think of building a wooden shelf instead a block shelf? Seems block shelf can't store much? Just a thought 😅

    • @FrankieOffGrid
      @FrankieOffGrid  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think we’ll use a combination of both. That part of the kitchen will be above the oven and a work top. So we’re thinking a good place to store random kitchen equipment that doesn’t get used too often.

  • @francescatappi3235

    How come you chose cement versus lime? I’m just curious. I love your place and your videos. I can’t wait to move to Portugal as well. 😊

    • @FrankieOffGrid
      @FrankieOffGrid  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Hi Francesca, we actually asked as many builders/tradesmen as we could for advice, some from the UK and some from this area in Portugal. All of them advised against using lime. It’s interesting as almost all of the information online suggests using lime over cement. The biggest reason for us not using lime is that the back of the house is partly underground and would be difficult to seal, a cement mortar with waterproofing additive should give us that seal 🤞
