    Carissa, Iwan & Frankie decided one night over a bottle of wine that moving from North Wales to Portugal would be a good idea. Within a month they were on the road to Portugal to find the perfect piece of land to call their new home. We picked up Albi the cat along the way. Subscribe to follow our journey as we turn an old stone barn into our home, and learn the ropes of looking after a piece of land to make an abundant garden and one day, our very own winery.

    I have been watching the both of you from the beginning because of The Indie Projects. Better audio and film than the start, so just like watching your veg patch grow, it's been nice to see your viewership grow. Well done.

    A suggestion? Could you build out your kitchen walls to be flush with the stone walls? Therefore you could insulate behind and then have the ability to hang some cupboards for more storage. Added bonus, you aren’t reaching so far back?

    Hazel ☘️ …
    Just as a matter of interest … do you intend to kinda hand plaster finish those kitchen walls ?
    I’m thinking of it as rustic, undulating walls painted over, in keeping with the barn look ?
    With Portuguese tiled (perhaps slightly widened) shelf ?
    You’ve probably mentioned what your doing, but my memory being what it isn’t ! … I know you have discussed the shelf in the past.
    Have a good week end … 🙏☘️😘

    Thanks for another lovely vlog with some great jazz music infill. I watch a channel called Fy Nyth about a lady called Ariel who lives in a tiny house on wheels in the Tetons, Wyoming. She has hens and her nesting boxes are just buckets laid on their sides - nothing too fancy unlike the hen house.
    I love how everything is springing forth like the wildflowers etc - it looks idyllic. I remember you saw a snake when you first viewed the land - do you still see them because there has to be more than one or have they moved on somewhere else?
    I am glad you have taken the pressure off yourselves by trying to get everything done at once. Its rough news about the car too.
    I hope you have a great week and can you please send some warmth up to Britain because it has been very cold here this past week.

      They would do better if they had nesting boxes and a perch. Chickens will roost in tree branches in the wild and not on the ground.

    • @FrankieOffGrid
      @FrankieOffGrid  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They have one nesting box, I’m not sure they know what it’s for yet. And they all sleep on a perch at night time. Do you think we should add one to the outside run area?

    • @justoneacre7873
      @justoneacre7873 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@FrankieOffGrid no, chooks are quite happy to scratch around during the day outside. Inside the chook house it is always a good idea to give them a choice of nesting boxes (at least 2). Older experienced chooks will know when they are going to lay an egg and will hang around the nesting boxes until they lay. Your chookies must be new at this if they are laying in random places!

    Hello from Mid Wales - enjoying your videos. It was a scarce swallow tail that you saw - nice. Some good ID books that I have found for the Algarve are the Dorling Kindesley 'Flowers of the Mediterranean' as well as 'Wild flowers of southern Europe' (Davies and Gibbon) which would help with the ones I see on your land. I love the 'Algarve Wildlife, the natural year' which has a wide range of species in it and is readable - really helps with ID of a range of species you see and has good photos - I guess it would still be useful for central Portugal. I also have the New Holland European Amphibian and reptile guide which is great for thumbing through (better than the Collins). Loved hearing the cuckoo in the last video - looking forward to hearing them back in mid wales!

    Next time, instead of concrete, you may emploied lime or plaster, lime can be mixed with sand as well. They are better for thermic reasons, ask to the natives, we use it even in the northwest from where im, even if that regions is much more humide, they are also cheaper, mainly the lime option. lime is called cal, and plaster gesso.

    • @FrankieOffGrid
      @FrankieOffGrid  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      We wanted to avoid lime due to the possible movement of moisture from the bank that the house is built into. The local builder we know around here who is 75 and made a living off restoring stone barns also said to stay away from Lime.

    • @titodecastro
      @titodecastro 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@FrankieOffGrid
      Often, it is the opposite, lime absorves humidity, concrete does not, even if has lots of sand. Plaster to do this kind of work is called gesso estuque in Portugal, but it will be more expensive than concrete, cimento. You can also add lime to concrete in some parts. It is cute.. There is a product to avoid humidity, it is a little bit expensive, and it can be added to concrete or lime, to plaster im not sure. A person with 75 years old in pt is from the concrete Era already, and from the green revolution. Your channel is good, bon courage for both of you. Oh, thanks for the answer.

    Hi.. i'm following you guys for sometime now... i love your energy... keep up your awesome work and approach to life.
    PS - i'm fascinated by your little Tea Infuser (i think it's called that) and how it filters the herbs ... can you by any chance help me find one similar?

      Thanks for watching! A tea infuser is what it is, this one is a Japanese type called a Kyusu. It had the handle at 90° to the spout rather than the western version.

      @@FrankieOffGrid , thanks for the reply... so it can't handle 100º, boiling point, it needs to be a little lower, like 90º?

      Yes that’s the idea, they’re made for Japanese tea’s but they’re quite versatile really!

      A white tea, from Japan. We met the farmer when we visited Japan a few years ago and we now take almost his entire stock of white tea every year. It’s beautiful!

      Do the chooks get to enjoy the spent tea leaves?

    You guys really should be using lime instead of cement. I find it much nicer to work with and you wouldn't be creating damp problems in the future.

      We’re using a waterproofing agent in the cement so we won’t be creating any more damp problems, with the back wall being built into the terraces if we used a lime based mortar we would definitely be having damp problems. I agree it’s nicer to work with though 😅

      Temos uma amiga com uma cabra, talvez podemos pegá-la emprestada, pois não sentimos prontos para mantê-la.
