    Beijinos e abraços,
    Carissa, Iwan, Frankie & Albi
Carissa, Iwan & Frankie decided one night over a bottle of wine that moving from North Wales to Portugal would be a good idea. Within a month they were on the road to Portugal to find the perfect piece of land to call their new home. We picked up Albi the cat along the way. Subscribe to follow our journey as we turn an old stone barn into our home, and learn the ropes of looking after a piece of land to make an abundant garden and one day, our very own winery.

i watch lots of channels about buying land in portugal, self sufficiency, off grid etc. I love all of them, they are all so different and offer something personal and unique and I have learned so so much helpful stuff both practical and creative as well as all being inspiring and so encouraging (despite the heat) -all of them. But theres something about yours which always ignites the yearning-perhaps because its so grass roots and honest and fully appreciative of every little bit of nature. I just find your gentle, open, naturally sharing way so real and riveting. Such a gorgeous offering-sometimes almost poetic -or like a french film 😊🌿

Your garden is doing so well. A lot of work for sure. Fresh produce is the best and taste so darn good. I have noticed you have a lot of ants. I sprinkle Epsom salts or baking soda mixed with a little bit of sugar in my garden and it does a great job of keeping them away and reduces how many there are. Even setting a low dish in the garden in different places filled with Epsom Salts/ and a little bit of sugar works to. If you can find the ant hill and sprinkle the Epson Salt mixture on top of it, they will vanish. The great thing it is dog and cat friendly and it is a natural remedy. We love to cook outside to and I think the food is better and you have a heartier appetite. Your kitchen looks wonderful and so bright and cheerful. I have never seen or heard of walking onions before. They are a very interesting plant. Your gardens look so well manicured and are producing quite well. You do have a green thumb. Grapes are so sensitive to grow here in Canada and Concord grapes seem to do the best but they are not the sweetest grape. I must say the flowers have such a vibrant rich color. Must be that hot sun you have. You both are making great progress on your homestead. Enjoy your beautiful paradise.

Wonderful start of the video. Love your nature shots. Two particular shots intrigued me - when you were filming the wall and both dogs ran across, and then one again later. Did you plan it or was it just a "happy accident"? In any case, for me both shots were perfectly edited in the right place, as a kind of break of pace, let's say. Wonderful.

I was sure you wont give Diogo to a new home. 💝
You're lucky. Our river dryed up to early this year. Our well is empty every day but it fills back with ground water. It's a very bad situation. We save as much water as we can but I have to water the garden. It's scary. We'll buy a big tank to store much more water for the worse case. It's 6 weeks more until the days are shorter and the ground water starts to come back. Have to plant the fall garden.
    🙏🙏🙏

They are so lucky with the water situation. The days are getting shorter already in North Wales, has been since the 21st June. So much rain in Snowdonia, although we had a look at the reservoir that feeds our village and it is a little low. Couple of hose pipe bans in South Wales.

I grew up with this kind of oppressive summer heat and I'm loving these videos during our heatwave. This really is how you do it. This year I bought a little desktop cooler/fan that I can fill with ice and it's been life changing. It won't cool off a room but if I point it at me I can fall asleep! I'm also dragging hoses around to keep plants alive and planting and cooking in the dark, but I'm renting in California. That being said. A swamp cooler will really make things comfortable if the humidity is low. I've never lived in a house without one.

The farm is looking good. The heat is such a killer. The animals are adorable. It's funny that Frankie likes to bury socks in the garden. One of my cats, as a kitten had a thing for playing with bras. He would run through the house like the caped avenger. I often found them in the kitty box. Anyway, in N.S. the heat is hot. Temperature + humidity 39-41 C. Summers are hotter than they used to be. 🙂👍🐈‍⬛🐕

If you feel like you need to do something take up knitting and quilting and things like that. You can sit in the shade and move at your own pace.
Also you might want to look into drip irrigation and passive water retention systems to help with your grape harvests. You're in a seasonal monsoon climate driven ecology so as much water as you can store during the winter months will help you out during the dry months.

I would wait until the Jerusalem artichokes top growth dies back and the energy goes back into the tubers before harvesting.
They should start to flower soon, then will start to die back after the first frosts.
It's easier to only dig up what you need at the time, as they go soft if not used.

Black eyed peas are one of the few beans you don't have to soak overnight. Texans, and Southerners in general, love Black eyed peas. I ate them in salads, soup or stew, and just as cooked beans. They are delicious. I like cooking mine with sausage, which I render, then add onion, celery, bell pepper and Old Bay, Thyme, Bay Leaf and Chilis. Once those are sweated, you add water or stock. In the winter, I also would add Potatoes, and at the very end, Swiss Chard or Spinach. Collard greens if you grow them there can be added much earlier in the cooking process. They take a long time to cook down because they're so fibrous.

Your garden is so beautiful and I love hearing about it - you’re doing an amazing job ☺️👍
Yes be smart in the heat, even though you’re young, those cultural norms about keeping busy or you’re lazy are a pain and they aren’t good for anxiety levels, but physical and mental health are far more important ☺️

I have never seen wondering onions before. I love all the videos and have learned a lot along your journey. I know about the heat, living in Arizona. I honestly would not know how to survive in that heat without air con., sometimes the sound it hard to hear, when your voice goes up and down. Love, love the kitchen. Thank you for sharing. I cannot wait to visit the area next year. Stay cool.

Loving the look of the garden with the extra watering.. you should get a good harvest.
It’s a bit late to start watering the grapes now but next year, especially if it’s really hot, put some water on them too. You will have a far better yield.
    Cheers from Australia ❤️🇦🇺🌸

@@FrankieOffGrid as a cautionary tale, in the early 60’s my dad was institute director at the mathematics research center in Oberwolfach in the Black Forest. The department chairman at the nearby University of Freiburg had a brother who made wine that they served at Oberwolfach (the price was right: free). In a bad year the wine was so sour it would shrivel up your stomach. In a good, sunny, dry year, when the unique taste of the wine would come out, it was undrinkable. 🤮

Jerusalem artichokes are best consumed lacto fermented to convert the gas causing insoluble fibre. They taste great as they are but are very gassy.
